wow - thank you so much... I picked up an Edison Diamond disk player today at an antique market and it had a 78 reproducer with it - but was playing strangely - after seeing your video i noticed it was incorrectly fitted - so i adjusted so the arm orientation was the same as yours and now plays well... your video taught me a lot!
Run your thumbnail underneath the diamond stylus on the reproducer. If it scratches your nail it’s OK to use. A replacement diamond stylus runs $150 and up so it’s always good when you don’t need one!
@@1974hurt awesome thanks kindly - hmm - needs a little pressure to scratch it.. so maybe it's 50/50 .... there is a lot of black "crud" around the point of the needle - is there a way to clean the needle?
@@1974hurt Oh god - i was playing a record and was winding the machine when it began to click instead of wind - i fear the spring is broken now - do you have any videos or advice on what to do ?
Thanks again Brett! I just picked up a Kentone adapter for my Diamond Disc A100 and figured I better check with you before my first 78 play. Coincidently I also have a Kinetic Road Machine fairly close to my phonograph :)
I bought an adapter on ebay, but when I play it on the record, it wobbles and falls off the tone arm. Its a brass tone arm, that part seems to work fine, and a silver colored producer that slides inside the arm. It doesnt latch though. There are screws on the producer, but they don't seem to do anything to attach itself to the arm securly. What am I doing wrong? Is there a way to fix it to stay put so I can play the 78 record?
You need to put the Edison machine in the non-play position so the horn moves freely. You put the 78 adapter on and you line the 78 adapter by moving the horn to the middle of the record so the 78 adapter will move left and right.
Thanks for your video, now I found away to play my 78 rpm jazz albums on the Edison. Question, is it really necessary to change the needle every number? Curious if you have an opinion about this.
If you have a record that you want to preserve, then change the needle after every play. If you have a record that’s worn out, well loved and played, then changing your needle is not gonna save the record, it just won’t make it any worse.
Hi Brad I bought a nice refurbished adapter fo my Edison but it’s playing victor records too slow for some reason even with the speed turned up the fastest. Do u know why maybe? Thx
Hello, I've been searching for an adapter all over the internet but failed to find any. Is there any chance that there are reproductions of those adapter?
@@1974hurt I have. from what I heard they are sadly getting harder and harder to find. on the bright side if you can take measurements of an adapter one can recreate one via 3d printing
@@1974hurt This is crazy to see this comment from one minute ago because just today I found an edison model a150 in my neighbors basement that I'm looking to buy from him and was looking to see if it was possible to play 78's on an edison and your video is the only place on the internet that I found a solid answer, so thank you. I'm looking for that adapter you just said, but I can't find it. Is that the exact name?
As a complete and admitted novice in this field ....were hill and dale adaptors sold for Victor Talking machines to enable Edison Diamond or Pathé disks to be played? I play mine with a modern turntable at 78rpm and stereo cartridge using the LP stylus quite successfully.
DO NOT PLAY 78'S ON AN EDISON DIAMOND DISC MACHINE!!!! Don't play them on a Victrola for that matter. The tone arms are 100 times heavier than modern turntables and all that weight ruins the records. Use a modern turntable with 3 gram tonearms, it will sound 100 times better anyway and won't ruin the records.
You are indeed living up to your name! Now I just gotta get my ‘new to me’ Edison working and find an adapter.

@@geriatrixfpv You can wipe it gently with a piece of soft cloth. That’s just old dust and dirt from record grooves

@@1974hurtYes. I will do that now.
I have a Sterling adaptor and the machine MUST be engaged. If you center it, it doesn't reach the start nor the end of the record.

Hi Greg! Thanks for your help although I am struggling to find the same adapter that swivels such as yours? Would you have any help?? Thanks, Chuck
They can be called “78 adapter “ or “lateral adapter “ for diamond disc and are often available on eBay.

Look on eBay for “lateral adapters”
