- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.พ. 2025
- This is a traditional any% run of Super Metroid, aiming for fastest completion without the use of gamebreaking glitches or cheat codes. It features a new route that keeps backtracking to a minimum, as well as various improved speed tricks and boss strategies exclusively developed for it, to push the completion time down to 22 minutes.
Enjoy!

This is a tool-assisted speedrun. More info at TASvideos.org/
Half of the video is cutscenes, room transitions, item pickups, and credits. Bravo!
I thought I would just kinda have this in the background as I tried to get work done, but then my mouth just opened and I couldn't look away in utter disbelief. This was probably the greatest speed run I have ever seen!
That was not just the best speed run I've seen before, but also the most entertaining. Good job. :-)
"The last Metroid is in ca- err, dead. That was quick."
I fucking love you, Saturn. This was simply AMAZING. The level of optimization was just brilliant. So many of the time savers you used are things I hadn't thought of, like mock-balling through gaps while waiting for the bomb to blow up the blocks. Very very amazing run.
Jaw-droppingly beautiful, as to be expected from SaturnTAS. Despite the amazing route and time, I still find the most amusing parts to be how he messes around whenever getting a few seconds to mess around, waiting.
I forgot how entertaining these Super Metroid speedruns were to watch! :D
Gorgeous run! When I saw you going for Ridley before Kraid and Draygon I was like O_o! Thanks so much for continually pushing SM to the limits and beyond!
Christ, Kraid didn't even get a chance!
A great modern philosopher once said "I must proceed at a high velocity!" But this TAS takes it to the whole new extreme!
@shaman666 If you are referring to the title that is 22 minutes total time, in game play (not counting loading sequences), that it took for him to complete the game.
WTH?! Breaks all records! (I think.) Nicely done! :-D You made Kraid and Phantoon look like jokes! Ya got skeelz!
It was him using TAS, he didn't speed run it
Golden Freddy I know that now. I was derpy when I was first on TH-cam. (I still am)
the best TAS runner overall
I still need to master that whole get damaged then fly across the screen move. that's the one move that has eluded me the most. Awesome run though, there were plenty of moments where you had me going "OH GOD WHAT?"
amazing!
Lol the Torizo skip never seen that, wonder if it could be pulled off in human playthrough?
I believe so. I think it's only ever been done like twice though
It's possible for a human to do it on the PAL (European) version. On the NTSC version it's literally impossible for a human. The wiki explains why:wiki.supermetroid.run/Bomb_Torizo
In short: You need to touch the bombs perfectly, with both height, momentum, and jump cancel, perform _29 frame-perfect inputs in a row,_ and then perform another frame-perfect input afterwards. All at 60FPS.
And even then it only has a 50% chance of working.
Or, as an even shorter explanation: You need a mashing speed of 60hz.
Practicing
well done saturn, great video.
I felt like a savage witnessing an H bomb demonstration. That's how much my mind was blown. Good god, man. I did not know this was even humanly possible.
it is not "This is a tool-assisted speedrun."
+AymonEssence hydrogen bomb

@Ranzear You need to unequip the varia suit and have 700 to 999 energy in order to use the stand-up trick. Gathering that many energy tanks would take more time than the glitch would save (even though he would be able to skip the varia suit this way). Search for "super metroid tricks tasvideos" for more information on this and other tricks.
@MadCatt23 Going out of bounds or overwriting unintended memory addresses is typically what counts as "heavy glitching". In the case of Super Metroid that would be X-ray climbing and the space-time beam, and some uses of the murder beam. This isn't a distinction Saturn invented - it is the one used by TASvideos too.
@26yd1 I think the limiting factor here is that he has to jump in order to build up falling speed. As long as the power bomb goes off before he lands from that jump I don't think the exact timing matters.
29:00 how can you be supercharched for so long?
I know it's a TAS but just when I thought I couldn't be more impressed, 34:18 happens.
@26yd1 If he places it higher it still takes time for the explosion to get to those blocks, and I believe it was mentioned in another video that the optimal place for the powerbomb is occupied by that waver Unmorphing to kill it after placing the bomb near enough to optimal would slow his falling speed. Since those blocks must be destroyed by a bomb (and I believe the PB detonates faster) the solution is to just get there as quickly as possible and take that moment to rebuild falling speed.
@Linkenfant Totally possible, Namespoofer has a TAS RBO run up already.
When he's running through the Mother Brain lair from the first game, is that fog graphic the same stuff used in Link to the Past's lost woods?
30:50 is just frikkin' brilliant. That's all I can say.
No animals were harmed during the making of this speedrun .
Hey thanks for this awesome video... i know how to do the mock ball, but im not sure how to do the instant speed boost.... how can i?
My thoughts throughout the video: HOW?
It's a TAS
Saturn does it again!
@amaureaLua Yeah, I looked into it a little better after posting and realized I just had it backwards (Varia off, not on, so need enough energy to survive). I was thinking that because he collected the Varia suit he could execute the Stand-up.
I can't help but wonder how many arm pumps were done in this and how many seconds were milled off because of it.
@Ranzear I don't agree that going out of bounds is somehow "illegitimate". It is just that the type of run that does that is so different from one that doesn't that it makes sense to consider them as different categories. Both are interesting and both should be TASed. Being able to perform things in real time is totally orthogonal to this (and this too has nothing to do with "legitimacy"): I have performed X-ray climbs and used the space-time beam in real time, but they're still major glitches.
WOW. If this would have been in the movie theaters for $100/view, it would have been worth it. I've been speedrunning this game for a long time now, but still have not even come close to this level of Mastery. This is Yoda level.
@shalafi4 i think it's so he doesn't have to spend time collecting more energy tanks since the varia suit reduces damage taken during mother brain's fight
wow i just thought "hmpf only a tas for the old Route" because of the date but then i realised the new route is already 6 years old? :O
Hey! I was wondering, why did you take the Varia Suit? After you already got the Gravity Suit? Doesn't Kraid count as defeated if you don't collect it?
cuz it halfs mother brain's supah laser. for some reason.
33:40 "SpaghettiOs with Metroids" Level xD. (SpaghettiOs cause of the blocks that shoot the "O" shaped projectiles, in case someone didn't understand)
Because Varia and Gravity combined make Mother Brains hyper beam only take away 3 energy tanks. Taking away each suit means the beam does 3 tanks more per suit.
Not sure why he doesn't speed up the motherbrain fight with the stand-up trick though. Could save more than a few seconds (maybe not enough to break into :21 on the game clock) but I could be wrong if it involves needing one more energy tank, much like the annotation below about collecting the Varia suit vs 3 more energy tanks.
I guess he needed the wave beam for making the special attack against Ridley (around 21:00). It requires the wave beam to do it.
And here I was.. proud of a 35% 46 minute game I just played..
Can someone explain the Ridley battle to me? I notice he was switching his weaponry up top quite often. Is there some in game trick going on here?
You are gonna notice this one I point this out easily, but it's simple. He is using the wave beam combo which is why he keeps switching to power bombs.. BUT after every beam combo, he switches to super missles and shoots him with one super missle and then switches back to power bombs to perform another beam combo. That process repeats.
@MadCatt23
Ranzear explained everything to you except the bomb Torizo skip:
in fact you can use pumping arm in real time and this will make you earn a few frames, so using it in frame by frame playing isn't a gamebreaking glitch but the maximum optimisation of this trick
And this optimisation allow to skip the torizo and to avoid mockballing in the early S.missile room.
If you didn't knew he use this in every "non-jumping or slopy" moment of the game to earn time.
Hope I helped you :-)
"Escape immediately!" Is before the counter even starts fast enough? Awesome run, looks really optimal and there are some amazing tricks and shortcuts.
Geez I thought I was fast when I beat it in four hours. Masterful
Can someone explain me why at 23:47 he puts a power bomb on the ground and not earlier on the air?
Ok this should make earn 1/4 second but it shocked me in a so perfect run :D
saturn is amazing
@MadCatt23 Every one of those things can be done manually and legitimately. I've managed the early super missiles/reserve mockball, quickcharge in Draygon's room, and skipping motherbrain's barriers on the Wii version. There are a few implausible things performed in this video that are simply the hallmark of a good TAS run.
XRay traveling is certainly out of the question for a legitimate player though, which is why he avoids it. I like that he's using this same stance for his RBO run as well.
If I used a Game Genie for infinite health and hyper beam(C225-3005 and 62C5-14A6. Two codes seared into my brain) I don't think I could get an Any% Run under 30min. My best legit 100% run is just under 1:30 and Any% Run is 0:45ish. I realize now that I do a LOT of screwing around. My tricks skills need a lot of practice and leave a lot to be desired.
@ez2b If memory serves (I may be wrong as it's been a while)
Varia suit reduces damage to 1/2
Gravity suit reduces damage to 1/4
he already had the gravity suit soo. *puzzled*
How does he not receive heat damage if he does not have the Varia Suit?
That..was awesome
Bomb guardian was like," wait where you goin'?🤔"
6:50 LOL!! Man skipped the boss battle
8:03 That Super Missile grab was too boss
9:23 Man puts my skills to shame
11:35 what the hell is going on, and how did you beat that hard ass boss in under a minute!?
You got the Gravity Suit before you got the Varia suit? Interesting AF.
14:55 OMG THATS FKN COOL
the best technic ever
@EmeraldLinkinWolf Tool Assisted Speedrun
Can someone please explain to me how he had the gravity suit without even going to the wrecked ship? It is either the largest game glitch or a cheat.
I wouldn't ask if I did not know. I don't know all of the glitches in Super Metroid.
... I feel stupid.
:|
Was that a brief "blue suit" glitch usage after Draygon? Isn't it considered illegal under the "no glitch" requirement?
I’m not sure if there is a no-glitch requirement because it’s a TAS and it’s already breaking the entire game. But maybe I’m just stupid.
>aiming for fastest completion without the use of gamebreaking glitches
This. TAS can be of varying degrees of glitch exploitation. Under these constraints, "blue suit" seems to be considered a relatively benign one, I guess.
I dont really know if its considered a "gamebreaking glitch" then.
What's the wave beam attack you used to fight Ridley?
I wonder what his unassisted speed run record is.
This gameplay was flawless. I had no idea there was a wave beam homing device feature...how do you do that? the shot you kept using on Ridley??
6:56 wtf
So, what is the point on gettin Plasma an Varia? Wouldn' it be faster without?
+CosmicVoid Varia is required to reduce damage from Hyper Beam by half for reasons of weird coding. Without it, he would have to go out of his way to find 3 more Energy Tanks, the fanfare alone of which would add 14 seconds to the run versus getting Varia. Plasma Beam makes a charged shot twice as strong as a Super Missile, so a small amount of time is saved at the final boss.
@ElectrumZephyr
You're right, He beat Cpadolf!
HOW IN THE MOTHER OF GOD DID YOU JUST AVOID THE FIGHT WITH FIRST CHOZO STATUE @6:51 IVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THIS EVER SINCE I WAS A KID!!!!!!
Jaw hit floor. If this isn't a robot, it's a ninja.
Was this before Moonfall was found?
1 question: is it faster to get the plasmabeam or not??
Is this what its like to be god?
The Hell.... definately YES !! :D
yoshidude01 No, This is what it is like to be a machine that can calculate movement 1 frame at a time allowing for the ability to be perfect and control next to everything
ShadowOfOurHearts ...so God?
+yoshidude01 I am pretty sure this is scripted. These frame-perfect moves are pretty darn hard to do. Not messing up once in the entire playthrough is nearly impossible.
Mokona Modoki Yes it is scripted. the RNG is perfect and controlled just like every pixel of movement
This is just nuts. Are you utilizing save states or is this a continuous run?
@rd7979 - He has. It's currently being judged.
what's the thing at 11:35 called
Now i just feel incompetent...
the Chozo weren't playing when they manipulated Samus's DNA. Probably why the Chozo turned away from war, they would have taken over the whole galaxy with just a small flock.
Exactly that...
Mother Brains beam is the reason.
OMG 14:55 the best xD
@SaturnTAS question for you! Is there a reason to grab the varia suit after killing Kraid in this run?
28:12 FULL HALFIEEEEEEEEEEEEE
@14:55 - Did he just make that whole section without ever touching the ground?!
Are you still working on the reverse boss order run ? Or is someone else doing it ? :o (if it's even possible)
as is done for the speed boost without running?
The game only checks at specific frames if your running. So only pressing the run button on those frames makes the game think your running the entire time
how do you scatter morph ball bombs?
charge ur gun and roll
thanks
awesome
How does he move so fast? Like at 8:00?
Yes, but without speed boosters you cant run that fast. Im guessing its because it is TAS
Charlie Ferreira Okay, thank you! that is what it was.
Kinda late, but mockball was not what that technique was about. That is a technique, where you press L and R buttons while running, because you always gain 1 pixel every time you press L or R once. Combine with being able to press L or R every frame because this is TAS, and the speed boost is pretty huge. And you can see normal speedrunners use this technique aswell :3
are you working on a video atm ?
What a fucking god
I don't get why you get the Varia suit... you have Gravity, right?
(I haven't yet watched beyond this point. I'm just wondering^^)
My God!!!!! What's that??? 😱😱😱
flawless run! Superplay XD
Pure savagey
DEAD SPACE inspiration
WORLD RECORD 0:22
why didn't u submit this to tasvideos ? Isn't it an awesome run?
I would probably fail so many times... -_-
this is how god play Metroid!!!!
you need varia suit?
You can't beat game without Varia Suit, you need it to acquire Hyper Beam at the very end of the game :P
No you don't. Plus you know this is a robot right?
+im not famous Tool-assisted speedruns are not done by robot, they are done by humans with special emulators with features such as save states, slowing the game down, even playing it frame by frame :P And yes, you do need Varia Suit, because that is the only thing that recognises the Hyper Beam, so trying to go without it would result in not being able to use Hyper Beam :)
You can still use it. Many people doing RBOs never get the suits. Thats to save a huge type of time.
+im not famous Well, actually I was wrong about the reason any% runs takes Varia Suit but there is still reason why they takes it in Any% runs. Because of how much damage from MB's Hyper Beam it reduces. With Varia, MB does 300 HP damage, while unequipped it takes twice as much damage, 600 HP. In Any% runs runners take only 3 E-Tanks which means that Samus would have only 400 HP and she wouldn't make it. Hope this helped :D And sorry about the inconvience I caused before.
Should have rather called it "Super Metroid WTF Compilation (TAS)"
And of course open doors and break rocks even faster
0:22? what?
