I recently made postage stamp sized fake books of the original Percy Jackson covers out of an old cereal box and stuck them in a razor blade package I took from my dad as a little tiny book rack for my wall
I've actually been doing this since last spring. I have a bunch of cheesy signage, and I do decoupage with images that go with my decor. I'm not the most confident painter. These signs make the best canvases! Also if you paint them and flip them around, they make cute cubby shelves. Use them for miniature dioramas, and shadow boxes. I loved that you used The Stand image. I'm a huge Stephen King fan. ❤
Who else gets Mr. Rogers vibes when she opens up about the difficulties of creating? I love how she always makes me feel normal and okay when I struggle:)
@1:25 those painted wooden buildings! I have a collection of these ( a dozen or so) bequeathed to me from my grandparents who sadly passed away a few years ago. I always admired them and it wasn’t until this year I displayed them in my home only to realize that they all have a lounging black cat painted somewhere on the building (hence the title series; the Cat’s Meow) ❤😸
I absolutely adore the cover art from the Ballantine Books 1965 edition of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. No way could I ever replicate it. So unhinged.
Great idea! You could make a bingo card with the signs in thrift stores. I'm placing a bet now that there will be a "bless this mess" sign. Seen a lot of those lately.
If I made a fake book cover, the first choice that springs to mind is "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. Or one of the old covers from the Wrinkle in Time series would be good. I have bought some cruddy plaques to remake...well, not from the thrift store, but they were cheap. I like take seashells that I collect on vacation and glue them on, making geometric designs or sort of like the old sailor's valentines. The issue is they can start looking cheesy really fast, so I have to control myself!!
This is 100% something I've been doing for a couple of years now. It's a great canvas for painting on, and basically creates its own "frame" with the depth and weight of the wooden sides.
I love seeing your freeform style of illustration and painting. It's effortless and fun, and you seem well able to push yourself past any brainstorms or lack of a plan. To get started, GET STARTED! I'm a very basic watercolor painter. It's my supposition that a painting goes from not quite finished, take one more stroke, and then it's way too much. That's why I have several paintings that look a bit spare. Watercolor is my favorite because of its immediacy and the joy of the colors. It's been years since I painted, but this is the year to dabble again. Thanks for the inspiration! PS - I was inspired and used an image of a young woman with her baby for my last painting. Her skin was golden and seemed to glow. She held her baby so tenderly, but was clearly marching off for important tasks. I was enamored of how I captured her golden glow skin. It's one stroke short, but I like it. I was dismayed, though, to read that she's a cholera victim in Guinea Bissau.
Love the notebook sketches Kathleen! I'm a long-time life drawer using brush and ink and love quick gestural sketches. It's really great to see a content creator encourage doing, making and enjoying over just consumption and have a few projects on the go. At the moment I'm rehabilitating a wallet that's all torn and pilled with markers, fabric glue and maybe even some patches. Also totally understand the dog-wanting-to-go-out-all-the-time-senario. My dog doesn't like it when it rains but has to go outside multiple times and stand miserably in the rain. Drives my husband up the wall. Lol.
This reminded me of a decor idea I'd had to take the pages of a really artsy children's book I snagged from the library where I worked (it was falling apart) and frame my favorite pages, then hang them on the wall. Since they're all the same size I was thinking I'd have to buy new frames but it occurs to me that I can thrift some frames and make them work somehow. Maybe modpodge or jesso the same type of wall hangings you bought and paste the page onto that. Hmmm....
you killed it kathleen! absolutely LOVEDDDD the book cover (the PINK writing!!!?!!) and the artwork is PERFECT!!! Definitely visiting my local thrift stores tomorrow and hopefully grabbing some cheesy decor to redecorate. And I think I'll do the cover of pride & prejudice!
I love your art style! Really loving the art content in general, and upcycling what would most definitely be destined for the landfill. They turned out great! If I was to paint a fake book I would do a Jane Austen set and maybe paint a scene from the movie version of each book on the cover? Idk lol.
I buy the ugly signs and glue artist prints onto them. I find a sign that's just barely smaller than the print and use a glue stick (doesn't buckle the paper). Then I cut off the excess paper. It looks simpler than framing it. I have also used wallpaper or pretty magazine pictures to wrap the signs entirely so the design is on the sides as well.
Glad to see you and Skelly aren't sick of each other yet. This is such a great idea, thank you for sharing it! Love the way yours turned out. Also this video had more Kashi than the last one, so thank you for that. 😍😍 i appreciate you trying to get footage of doggos in the wild and them not cooperating is not on you. 😂😂
I always forget you’re in Ohio and then you see those beautiful cat’s meow pieces!! 🐈⬛ my grandparents had them from their Ashland, OH home and I’m obsessed ❤
I love this idea! I went through a post-breakup phase a few years ago where I did my best to reproduce Moby Dick illustrations by Rockwell Kent in acrylic in my sketchbook: now I want to try it on a Life is Better at the Lake House sign!
My book would probably be one of the elusive (expensive) early editions of the Anne of Green Gables book covers. Now I actually want to make that happen ❤
Watercolor is my fav medium, and I've been thinking of investing in some watercolor ground for this purpose. Btw, I rewatched Night at the Thrift Store with my 13 yo niece, and she loved it as much as I did. She bought a giant skelly with her own money last fall, so it was an extra delightful romp for her to watch your video.
I love the paint brush pup, just sitting next to your project. She's got no idea what is happening, but she's happy to help. I've recently finished Leopoldo Gout's book "Pinata" and I recommend it to Stephen King fans. Excellent horror/thriller from a Mexican indigenous author. It's a knock out.
1:56 the pretty ladies are classic danish paintings from "skagensmalerne" (skagen = idyllic place in Denmark, malerne = painters). So funny seeing them here! ❤❤
My favourite Stephen King book is "The girl who loved Tom Gordon". It's the first Stephen King book I read when I was a teenager and I read it many times since.
The Dark Tower is one of my favorite book series ever, the way it ties all together and with a bunch of his other books, just... ugh so good! I "stole" the series from my brother and ended up reading through it twice in high school before The Wind Through the Keyhole was released and absolutely jumped to buy it when I had the chance
For people who may not be painters, another fun idea with the book cover is to make a collage based off your favorite book as your own spin of the cover, just be sure to use a good quality top coat on top of it so it stays down afterwards! :D I might do one of my favorite books Challenger Deep, but it wouldn't be as interesting to just recreate the cover. So perhaps next time I go to the thrift store I'll use more of the scrapbooking materials I own
The gunslinger series is my favorite!!! I read them like almost 10 years ago and I’m now currently listening to them on audiobook. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend it. Beautiful narrating.
OMG I used to live like right next to that coffee place 😂 what a surprise seeing it in this vid! I love the final art pieces and I might use the book idea!!
Different Seasons (containing the inspo for Stand by Me and Shawshank) is one of my favorite books period. And Misery is such a cool read since you get to see how Paul experiences things.
This literally came at the perfect time, I have been planning an art wall of thrifted and homemade pieces. This is so inspiring, same with all of your other videos!
Omg! I recognized The Owl and The Pussycat IMMEDIATELY! It’s an actual store in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada! I used to live around the corner from it! It’s a toy shop and is a truly iconic storefront. 😂
absolutely love how your creations came out!! would have loved to see even more of the process on the painting of the girl. the colors all came together so well!
Very fun! I was going to say that my friend (and fellow enabler) AMOST got locked in our favorite thrift store. I think we were laughing too hard to hear the closing announcement!
Gunslinger DarkTower…I have them in Plume editions. My first husband and I would comb the used bookstore after each came out so we read them a little behind…usually as the next came out. When we divorced I got them. I went to reread a few years ago, when my oldest was old enough and found that one didn’t make it into my collection! I can’t remember if I replaced it or not. I can see their spines from where I sit. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
Nice! I did this two Summers ago for an art show that I was in. The cheesy signs are such a nice, sturdy, secondhand base. One of mine turned out super ugly, though!
How serendipitous! I am reading The Stand and have the book in front of me right now. It doesn’t have that awesome fighting image on it though, just a boring photo from the tv series.
I highly recommend the TH-cam channel The Average Artist, Kathleen! Not only is she a super cool artist that makes her own comic books (so cool) but she has a series where she repaints book covers - like actually paints on the covers of books and redesigns/makes a new cover for the book! I think you’d love it as much as I do!
My favorite books are not from Steven King but you might love them….The All Souls Series by Deborah Harkness and The Fifth Petal by Brunonia Barry. They also mention my childhood hometown 🎉
Stopped the video because I go so excited that you like the Dark Tower too! Btw, Fairy Tale is awesome. And has a wonderful dog. What more could you ask for?
what book cover would you want to re-create?!📕🎨
Not a book, but i would like to do a video game cover. Spyro from the 90's would be fun.
I recently made postage stamp sized fake books of the original Percy Jackson covers out of an old cereal box and stuck them in a razor blade package I took from my dad as a little tiny book rack for my wall
East of Eden! I'd probably gift it to my partner
Dragon's Dawn by Anne McCaffrey
‘The Catcher in the Rye’, the original cover and ‘The Cheese Monkeys’ by Chip Kidd.
Thank you for the cubby shelf diorama from cheesy signs idea! I will be using this!
Decoupage is such a. Good idea! 😊
Who else gets Mr. Rogers vibes when she opens up about the difficulties of creating? I love how she always makes me feel normal and okay when I struggle:)
I’d love to find a continuance of the MRNeighborhood universe. Anybody know something akin to that?
That biopic was SO excellent 🥲
"Can't say that about your textbooks, can ya?" 😂😂😂
You got me there
@1:25 those painted wooden buildings! I have a collection of these ( a dozen or so) bequeathed to me from my grandparents who sadly passed away a few years ago. thank you for sharing this! I looked up that book cover and it’s amazing! gorgeous 1960s art, the colors, wow!
Great idea! You could make a bingo card with the signs in thrift stores. I'm placing a bet now that there will be a "bless this mess" sign. Seen a lot of those lately.
i NEEEED to make thrift store bingo! so fun. thank you for watching!
the flower seed packet is SUCH a cute idea omg I need to make some immediately thank youuuuu !!!
I laughed, I loved and I feel ALIIIIVE! 🎉
oiiiiii, oiii feel so alooooive! for the voury fourst toiiiiime
Obsessed with the hot pink on The Stand cover!
The segment where you walk to the coffee shop is such an 80s indie movie opening with the music ❤❤❤❤❤
If I made a fake book cover, the first choice that springs to mind is "The Dark is Rising" by Susan Cooper. Or one of the old covers from the Wrinkle in Time series would be good.

The Dark is Rising is one of my absolute favorites. You could do some amazing stuff-- all the weird 70s pagan-y drawings in the original! SIGH!
this was so inspiring and had the best vibes, thank u dear kathleen
I Live, Laugh, Love this craft
This is 100% something I've been doing for a couple of years now. It's a great canvas for painting on, and basically creates its own "frame" with the depth and weight of the wooden sides.
The bossanova had me in a chock hold
Surrender to the 🌊 vibes 🌊
Ahhh I’m so honored to make a contribution to the Kathleen-iverse 😇😇😇 you killed it!

I would replicate one of the old Nancy Drew books! I already collect them, so it would be fun to paint some (:

So cute! can you still do the seed packet idea too? 🥺👉👈🥺 that sounds so adorable and perfect for spring as well!
Your hair is absolutely gorgeous 😍
Hello fellow eye avatar
👀👀👀👀👀👀
We also have an emotional support skeleton. He sits in our rocking chair and holds our laundry basket. 😅
You and Little Tiny Egg are the best thing on the internet. by far.
😮🥰
THE PIGTAILS ARE EVERYTHING OMG
This reminded me of a decor idea I'd had to take the pages of a really artsy children's book I snagged from the library where I worked (it was falling apart) and frame my favorite pages, then hang them on the wall. Dude……I need the unicorn!!🦄 ❤
I love your art style! Really loving the art content in general, and upcycling what would most definitely be destined for the landfill. They turned out great! So glad to see Benrey’s skeleton is thriving in the spring weather.
loving the little snippets of Portuguese songs strewn about in this vid, I’m a big fan of Portuguese music
That's Brazilian music. It's bossa nova
@@Marina-cp9zmyeah but they’re in Portuguese 😅, I think that’s what they meant
@@Marina-cp9zm yeah I just meant the language! I listen to stuff from both Portuguese and Brazilian artists
I buy the ugly signs and glue artist prints onto them. I find a sign that's just barely smaller than the print and use a glue stick (doesn't buckle the paper). Then I cut off the excess paper. I LOVE your calendar Kathleen!!

Oooo I have so many ideas now off to the thrift store 🏃♀️
bye!!!!!!!
such cursed signs turned into true treasures
the perfect package! hehe thank you for watching
15:57 The Hobbit 75 Anniversary cover ✨
or a bunch of flower packets like you mentioned before 🌻🌼🌻
I always forget you’re in Ohio and then you see those beautiful cat’s meow pieces!!
Sooooo...... I signed up for Skill Share because I bought a new banjo many years ago. I can't wait to start playing it!
AWESOME! hope you really enjoy it!
0:33 SKELLY'S BACK! *SKELLY'S BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!*
The fashion lady turned out great! One tip for getting a looser look is to hold the brush further back on the handle. Forces a bit of wobble.
I love this! There are so many signs at the thrift store just BEGGING to be given new life
I’d definitely want to replicate some old sci fi and fantasy covers from the 60’s.
The Long Walk is one of my favourite Stephen King books 😊
YES! Me too! It's such a powerful (& dread-filled) story
Just came to up vote you for upgrading lecture placques.
My book would probably be one of the elusive (expensive) early editions of the Anne of Green Gables book covers. Now I actually want to make that happen ❤
I squealed when I saw the little Happy Apple 😅
I love making over thrift store art. Wish I could post a picture to show you.
Watercolor is my fav medium, and I've been thinking of investing in some watercolor ground for this purpose. Oh my gosh!!! The little lamb clown!!! I’m so glad you have him out 🥹 I feel honored ❤ love the viddy Kathleen!!!! Stay stinky!! 💞💌
I love the paint brush pup, just sitting next to your project. She's got no idea what is happening, but she's happy to help.

She is thrifting wearing her thrifted pants. Love the projects you did today. I pick up signs and art pieces to recreate.❤❤
4:37 i love that shirt! Its so cute 💕
All of them came out so cool!
Also, love your outfits in this video.
Thank you Kathleen for this video. You gave me so many inspiring ideas. I appreciate your knowledge and art. Your paintings came out great I love it..
Your videos have the best sound and editing 🎼📽 👌💖
Loved the hot pink! Thanks for the inspiration 💓
The second sketch you didn't end up using was giving mad 'Paradise Kiss' vibes, loved it
That brush vs textbook comment made me chuckle, tis true!
Just the video I needed!
Hearts in Atlantis and 'Salem's Lot are my favourite Stephen King books
This is a great idea! Loving that book idea! I'm always looking for new things to paint over besides ugly paintings at the thrift store.
Watching you sketching on the floor with Louie Zong bossa nova playing in the background altered my brain chemistry
omg 🥹
For people who may not be painters, another fun idea with the book cover is to make a collage based off your favorite book as your own spin of the cover, just be sure to use a good quality top coat on top of it so it stays down afterwards! :D I might do one of my favorite books Challenger Deep, but it wouldn't be as interesting to just recreate the cover. I love this idea! Thank you for sharing & I hope you get some paper goodies when you go!
I remember having that ball chain necklace! I think I either bought it at hot topic in 1997 or ordered it from delias catalog. I wore it EVERY DAY
The gunslinger series is my favorite!!! I read them like almost 10 years ago and I’m now currently listening to them on audiobook. If you haven’t listened to them, I highly recommend it. Beautiful narrating.
Ooooh snap! That sounds like exactly what I need 🤠
I am not really a fan of Steven King but my husband says the Stand is his favorite.
I'm so excited to watch! Perfect time for a break from decluttering 😊
I need to see more upcycled thrift art
OMG I used to live like right next to that coffee place 😂 what a surprise seeing it in this vid! I love the final art pieces and I might use the book idea!!
My favorite Stephen King book is Night Shift! His short stories are so good!
I did a similar craft with a tin metal sign I was gifted and disliked. I typically like to do abstract stuff when I “art” 😅
I love the style of your videos !! And this one is especially inspiring !!🙂
Aw thanks so much!
Different Seasons (containing the inspo for Stand by Me and Shawshank) is one of my favorite books period. And Misery is such a cool read since you get to see how Paul experiences things.
Ahhh! We have the same OG art bin! Mine's 25 yrs old. A treasure. The Stand is so dear to me. Love your art-ventures as always
P.s found a few paint tubes from `98 in there. Still work great!
Same re art mess & college art supplies - hence og art bin
Would say that The Stand is my favorite Stephen King book for sure, but that cover is both so goofy but also very cool and classic in its goofiness
Yes! It’s amazing! I love the slight jester vibes
This literally came at the perfect time, I have been planning an art wall of thrifted and homemade pieces. This is so inspiring, same with all of your other videos!
whaaaat! that's great - best of luck with your magical gallery wall!
“I know you’re smart” *sweating intensifies*
😳✨
Very fun! I was going to say that my friend (and fellow enabler) AMOST got locked in our favorite thrift store. I think we were laughing too hard to hear the closing announcement!
Ugh that fashion painting turned out so gorgoues! 😍 I am so inspired, and yet so beginner at painting. 🙃
I fricken LUV the cursed photo print i NEED it *-*
Gunslinger DarkTower…I have them in Plume editions. 🌈🌈🦋🦋
This is one of my favorite things to do!!!! You're so darn awesome❤ p.s. love the book idea!
Ive only read four Stephan King books but Pet Semetary was my favorite!
The hair is lovely❤ and art to
Love this!! There’s so much trash in the thrift store that we need to flip!!
Nice! I did this two Summers ago for an art show that I was in. The cheesy signs are such a nice, sturdy, secondhand base. One of mine turned out super ugly, though!
love the paintings *gives you nobel price for arts and crafts*
How serendipitous! I am reading The Stand and have the book in front of me right now. It doesn’t have that awesome fighting image on it though, just a boring photo from the tv series.
I highly recommend the TH-cam channel The Average Artist, Kathleen! Not only is she a super cool artist that makes her own comic books (so cool) but she has a series where she repaints book covers - like actually paints on the covers of books and redesigns/makes a new cover for the book! I think you’d love it as much as I do!
Love Steph!
My favorite books are not from Steven King but you might love them….The All Souls Series by Deborah Harkness and The Fifth Petal by Brunonia Barry. They also mention my childhood hometown 🎉
Ugh, moved away from Columbus last year after living in Old North for six years -- love and miss Honey Cup ♥
Stopped the video because I go so excited that you like the Dark Tower too! Btw, Fairy Tale is awesome. And has a wonderful dog. What more could you ask for?
What was the third canvas? Did I miss it?
