As a longtime Sharks fan since the old Cow Palace days Joe Pavelski is definitely one of my favorite all time Sharks up there with Mike Ricchi, Owen Nolan, Jumbo and Nabby. One of the best Sharks Captains in team history up there with Bob Errey and Owen Nolan, all the best Captain America!

The Big Pavelski, Captain America, always leading from the front. Best captain the sharks have ever had. I truly think he deserves the hof but I still believe the larger hockey community don’t understand how great he was. I will be looking forward to seeing his name and number up in the rafters next to Patty and Jumbo.

    Hey Professor,
A tough bit of news to report for you today. Pavelski was always one of my guys. Who doesn't root for an underdog and Pavelski was the quintessential underdog until he proved that he was one of the best players in the NHL of his generation. I think you might be right. Joe might be just short of the HoF but, I think he deserves entry.
He did remarkably well from the start which I did not remember. Looking at his career stats his first season in the league he played 46 games for 28 pts and a plus 4 rating. Not too bad for a partial season! The next season in his first full NHL season (the 2007-08 season) he played in all 82 games, had 40 pts and was a plus 1. He came one shy of 20 goals that year! Those numbers would make him a top line player on today's Sharks! hehe
The Big Pavelski scored 25 or more goals 12 times in his career for a total of 476 career goals with 592 assists for a total of 1,068 career pts in 1,332 career games. For his career Captain America was a plus 201! He also scored a whopping 75 game winning goals!!! Certainly an impressive body of work. The thing that made Joe stand out to me was his ability to read the play and think the game. He was never fast so he had to out think the other players and anticipate where the action was headed and he did this at the highest level. The other thing he became famous for was his hand/eye coordination. The Big Pavelski's ability to stay on his skates around the net and to redirect pucks into the net was second to none. I have never seen anyone else so good at that skill.
As you said though the single defining characteristic of Joe Pavelski's career was his work ethic. Joe worked to be a great college hockey player and worked even harder to be a great NHL player. As captain he was ideally suited to the position and it is unlikely that the Sharks have ever had a better captain which is saying a lot. Logan Couture is an outstanding captain but, I think he and others learned about leading by watching how Joe did it. Joe always led from the front driving the play. Never asking his teammates to do something he would not do. When the play was at its fiercest Joe showed up again and again making a difference and leading the charge.
I think he has a chance to be inducted because 1,000 career pts is no small feat but, I would not be surprised if like you suggested he winds up just short. Kind of fitting for the undersized over-performing Big Pavelski wouldn't you say? I hope they do put his number 8 in the rafters. That is where it belongs.
P.s. Let us not forget that he was twice a member of the US Olympic team winning a silver medal in his first go round and wore the C for his second Olympics earning the nickname Captain America!

#1 Thornton #2 Marleau #3 Pavelski. His +/- is very good. He deserves to be the HOF.

Quick turnaround professor. Next HC? Pavs would make a great coach.

Definitely not next head coach considering that process is already pretty far along, but maybe a few years down the line

That is a very interesting idea. I have no idea what Joe wants to do with the rest of his life but, I agree. He seems like he is coach material.

Sad news. I almost kinda hoped the sharks could bring him back at a 3rd or 4th line vet to mentor the rookies coming in.

I heard he didn’t want to move his family again, but he might sign a 1 day deal type of thing if we are lucky.

Pavelski is easily one of the greatest stories ever, and may even be a candidate for HOF. He is the second greatest shark in my opinion. I love Patrick Marleau , but I feel like Pavelskis full body of work is better than Marleau. ALL HAIL CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!!
