Kinda disappointing that the scooters were electric kickscooters and not moped scooters. Depending on where you are mopeds beat even motorcycles cross city, as you can follow bicycle routes that bypass traffic lights, but you still effectively have the speed of a car. On my commute going by moped bypassed so much traffic lights that it turned a 5km commute from a 40 minute traffic jam by car into an 8 minute ride. Even with legal lane splitting for motorcycles here, you can't avoid being stuck at lights for minutes on end during rush hour.
I have an idea for Zack and Ari. Ride scooters from so. Cal all the way to the top of Washington state. 300cc to keep it safe, like a yamaha xmax300 and a Vespa GTS 300. I know the boys love scooters and seeing them tour on a couple of scoots would be a fun journey to witness.
So sorry, but $21000.00 for a motorcycle is NOT a "good low price." It's high end for the bikes you are riding. $12k is a decent price for most normal commuters. The CBR1000 is a much better deal if you want a commuter bike.
In the US there's no limit to what bike you can buy and getting the license doesn't require actual riding experience, so I would say for most people with money in LA those are actual beginner choices 😂
Especially useful for adding the datapoint of money comparison, two bikes almost as expensive at the Tesla with two empty seats, and together drawing near double the fuel power as the Tesla. Still, for most of the trip, a decent commuter or beginner bike could match near the same speed with less than half the price and fuel, so it's still useful data.
@2K_Unlimited I don't think there is any real benefit to using a motorcycle like that beyond personal enjoyment. Unless you're regularly hitting 120mph I think any middle weight streetbike will do it. Also both bikes TOGETHER cost as much as the Tesla. Tesla was $50k.
@@justcommenting4981 You're correct, a neighbor has a 50cc scooter and does about as well as I do for this short commute. I wanted something for touring and commuting without getting two. Once every few months I'll take her on the big road and "apologize" for rarely using half of what she offers by letting her breath a little.
I commute in LA and quite a good portion of cagers know bikes are splitting and look out for us during rush hour. That’s another benefit of legal lane splitting in that they’re accustomed to it. It’s the Saturday morning drivers still partially hung over I’m more concerned about.
I mean the car had “500 horsepower” so the bikes are kiiiind of close in comparison of ridiculousness for commuting. Maybe the bikes are more around 700hp cars but still, its a lot for a car too 😂
@@pmwaffle9348 yeah i was trying to think about like…50hp is pretty OK for a bike for all day every day commuting so i figure that could be a basic commuter 150-200hp car. Then double that again for a 200hp motorcycle and maybe thats around like a 700-800hp car, like a hellcat or a demon for the road. Ultra impractical and completely unnecessary.

A nice and thin Kawasaki Versys (650cc). WOW did that change everything! Suddenly I was first at all the red lights and it cut down travel time around LA dramatically. Splitting lanes took some nerve, but you get used to it. Highly recommended for residents of LA. I live in Atlanta now and I miss the ability to split lanes. And the nice weather.
Yeah, I can walk my 61 yr old grandpa-bod up four flights of stairs with a 40+ lbs. of computer, lunch, coffee, and accessories with no stop - but no way I go 20 miles with hills on an old mountain bike in less than 2 hours and a Gatorade worth of sweat and electrolytes. Not on my every day commute.
I kinda wish this had been an actual race tbh. Like five people with five different transportation types all started from ten miles away and had to get to a central point instead of a time trial.
Also, that Tesla did not look like it was in Sport mode. It's the difference between 180ps and 500ps lol. Also they should include an EUC rider who knows the city and is a good rider. Not even my bike vs truck I'm like +5mins 8 tops on a slow day for the bike and I'm additionally wearing a chest protector forearm/elbow guards and shin/knee pro (could have gone the jacket route and cut time but I'm on a dual sport so it's for the vibe), bike is in the garage kept it's really nothing on the time. Now leaving work where I'm not tossing my gear on as I get ready to leave is another story still about the same time added but it feels worse when others just hop in the cage and bounce and I'm still strapping my kit on.
Dang I forgot how big cities in other places can be 😂 Here in my city of Ghent, Belgium a bicycle is the fastest way to get around town, especially if you need to be somewhere in the center.
Good to see you guys waving thanks to the other vehicles who move over. We call lane splitting "filtering" here in Scotland and it's always good to give folks who gives us that extra bit of space a wee thank you.
Dweebs in the replies but hard agree. Motos are usually the more "comfortable" of the two, but both are easily the most vulnerable machines on the road. I'm a big proponent of cycling, and I use defensive riding/driving strategies learned from thousands of hours cycling in/around traffic every time I get on a moto. The scariest motorcycle riders I know/see are the ones that haven't ridden a pedal bike in 30+ years.
I've been watching Zack and Ari since Motorcyclist magazine. I get incredibly happy when I see a new video. I can't wait until my wife learns to ride so we can have adventures like them. amazing
Fun test. totally agree, motorbikes are best!. bloke from the UK here, i can't imagine not being allowed to filter in traffic. i love your average "budget" bikes!!.
I actually ride a BMW C650 maxi scooter around LA since 2018, it's one of the best choices as far as motocycles go: narrow (lane splitting), powerful/fast, cheap (can be had for $3-4K used) and best of all, no shifting, fully automatic.
I used to work at an SSA in Ocean Side and commuted down to Lakeside. In a car it took about 2 and half hours, almost all of it sitting in traffic. On my Gixxer750 it took about 40 min.
As an Angeleno, this is one of my favorite motorcycle videos of all time! Another awesome video fellas! Love the ending, y'all are some goofballs haha😂😂😂
I'm not in LA, I'm in the IE. But even with a motorcycle, I prefer the bicycle. I show up to work less stressed. It's not the fastest, but I like it better. Coincidentally, I'm going to watch the rest of this later and go for a ride.
NGL here a car was only 2x faster than the bicycle whilst it allows for 2-3x the speed on public roads within a city. That should tell you something about how congested car traffic is. Bicycle infrastructure is important and can even improve car traffic.
@@DavidJonSpem That's a pretty mean hill to get up to, too! Not normal for most people's valley commutes. If the commute were a flat 18mi with similar infrastructure/traffic I bet the difference would only be 10-20 minutes.
I loved the choice of motorcycles. Totally necessary for the job. Just for a fun thought, id love to see how close a versys 650 (Battle Toad) can come to matching the time. I bet it would be close.
real stuff, takes me 45m on average from home to work in a car but under 30m on a motorcycle pretty much any time, even when congestion will take a car over an hour
I really like this style of challenge where you're competing WITH one another instead of AGAINST like so many other shows do. Chemistry is best together!
Electric bicycles are the answer, fast, help with step inclines, can be used in roads and bicycle paths... The only downside is that in the US people are so used to having an exoskeleton aka their pickup or SUV and looking at the phone instead of the road that I wouldn't feel safe.
Gentleman, I cannot thank you enough for doing this as I ride an rsv4 1100 and a Yamaha r1m and my wife doesn't believe for a second that a motorcycle can be faster than a car in any scenario. You've helped me give her my reasoning for riding motorcycles starting at 4 and I am now 53. And I totally agree, Lane splitting should be legal in every single state of the United States and its territories.
I guy I know rides his Harley from Long Beach to LA every day during rush hour he says it’s less than a half hour drive. He’s has over 100,000 on his Harley
28:42 Don't forget transportation to the airport, preflight planning and inspection, and transportation from the next airport. And yes, I'm a pilot myself 😂
I'd ride my bicycles everywhere with that incredible Los Angeles weather, lane splitting, sight, so sweet, and year round motorcycling! (stares out winter at impending 6 months of winter)
I need a ringtone of Zack’s laughter. Love these episodes. I watch almost everything Revzilla puts out. I’m not even a hard core motorcyclist. This is good stuff.
I like how both of you just went with nothing but helmet on bikes but e-scooters ? full armor, more than on bikes. Those things look sketchy and feel even more sketchy
They should have dug out the old Honda CT90 to see if it could still keep up. Although it probably wouldn't be much fun on the multi-lane highway. Assuming it's even legal.
The nerd in me does want to point out that bikes and cars take very little prep time but if you're putting on and taking off proper safety gear electric scooters and motorcycles lose some time in the race from couch to being presentable at destination, especially if that destination is a stuffy office job with a dress code
Yes, you're right, those add to the trip time. I count about 3 minutes to don Helmet, Chaps and Jacket that go over my office outfit without a full change, and less than 2 to remove them. I use basic MC boots that are acceptable for the office. If I added shoe changes that would be another 4 to 5 minutes. Oddly, my half-scooter (Mten4 EUC) is more like 10 minutes each way, because i start the App on my phone. While it syncs up to the the Bluetooth Helmet and EUC (to give speed and time once a minute); I add kneepads and wrist braces with wireless turn signal controller tacked on. If I'm running early I take the MC to save 5 minutes.
@@2006Whippet time which you can save by not showering before you leave home. It mostly cancels out and you just need to factor in packing a bag and getting changed
@M1sterF1sh You got me there. I'm so used to showering first thing in the morning before I leave the house that I automatically factor that in without even thinking about it.
I'm an HVACR guy and work at a factory. I wake up at 5:35, out the door on my bicycle at 5:50. Arrive at work at 6:20, clock in a 6:25 (earliest I can clock in), and change into work clothes by 6:30. Motorcycle with safety gear would be slightly slower. Driving is actually the fastest way, but I prefer to pedal.
Fun video but obviously there is no question whatsoever. A motorcycle combines the ability to move at just about whatever highway-legal speeds you want, WITH the ability to cut through traffic between lanes, move to the front of queues at stoplights, etc. I commuted for a few years on a motorcycle, until I hit a deer on my way home late one night, hurt myself badly enough, and decided I would rather use my motorcycle for pleasure. But damn if it didn't cut off 15 minutes on a relatively short commute compared to a car, just in its ability to lane split.
Hi guys. Thank you for the fun video. Bicycles and scooters were fun to watch but glad it was you young ones and not me. Hearing you two laugh on your "average commuter motorcycles" was the best part. I laughed a lot.
This episode almost brought a tear to my eye. I've been without 2 wheels for two seasons now following a suspended license for speeding and financial issues. I can't wait to get back on two wheels. This was really motivating, especially after seeing Zack and Ari struggle on the bicycle and e scooter and seeing that calm but boring car ride.
Awesome video. I commuted in LA for 22 years and I used all those methods except the e-scooter - before my time. I also ran sometimes. My commute for a while was El Segundo to Playa Vista and another time El Segundo to Culver City. I found bicycle the best way and faster than car for that route. Also it improved my fitness and my mood. That beach bicycle path that then follows the LA river is a lot of fun and so familiar to me even 20+ years later.
lmao, Ari having a Dad Bod... I must be Ronnie Coleman then! Loved the episode, pretty surprised at the results to be honest haha because I ALWAYS commute on my Panigale
I live within commuting distance to NYC, highways during rush hour here are full of aggressive lane switching lunatics that will squeeze into any gap to get ahead of the next guy. Lane splitting here would be a bloodbath! Some cagers will even close off the gap if they see a motorcycle coming up on them between lanes.
In Manila, you're good to go with a 100-160cc Scooters from like Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, and or a electric scooter or a mountain bike ( due to a lot of pot holes and bad road conditions), and a small sub-compact car for fuel economy as traffic sucks as well.
As someone who uses a bike to commute, the type of bike you use definitely matters. Since part of cycling is stop and go, and trying to bounce around on and off the sidewalk, I like using an MTB. It's a full squish, 1×9 drivetrain, and hydro brakes. I find that a 3×7 does not really lend itself to city stop'n'go traffic, especially with stoplights. My gearring gets me good feel on both the slow uphills and fast flats. Not the wildest MTB, it's actually cheap as hell for a full squish, but it shreds stairsets, curbs, and whatever else I find myself needing to hop over. My typical commute to the grocery store is cut from a 10 minute walk to a 2 minute ride. My typical commute to work is a 25 minute ride, while taking about 1 hour with local public transport!

Thanks for giving cycling a fair shout. I think bicyclists and motorcyclists have a lot more in common than people realize.
no
no from uk
There is nothing in common with using body and motor power.
Spandex versus leather...
I can't wait until my wife learns to ride so we can have adventures like them. amazing
That bicycle ride looked so nice.. Very warm though.
You guys are the BEST! Love the understated approach to this comparison.
Fun test. totally agree, motorbikes are best!. bloke from the UK here, i can't imagine not being allowed to filter in traffic. i love your average "budget" bikes!!.
Nice Bueller at the end. Always a pleasure to see good friends living their best life. A rare tonic in the English winter.
I love that they have matching bikes! BFFs for life!
Another great video, the chemistry you two have really plays through and makes your channel so entertaining.
Moral of the story? Buy a Panigale V4S or Ninja ZH2. Got it!
I'm a new rider. Did I mess up getting a Hayabusa instead of a modest Panigale?
@MrProteinK depends. Do you want to survive or get across LA quickly?
@@aaronkcmo quickly of course
@MrProteinK are Zach and Ari ever wrong?
Buy a ev motobike best decision for city rides not burning fuel plus even saving time and money
I actually ride a BMW C650 maxi scooter around LA since 2018, it's one of the best choices as far as motocycles go: narrow (lane splitting), powerful/fast, cheap (can be had for $3-4K used) and best of all, no shifting, fully automatic.
The scientific value of this is also not to be underestimated. Thanks for sacrificing yourselves, Ari and Zack!
I used to work at an SSA in Ocean Side and commuted down to Lakeside. In a car it took about 2 and half hours, almost all of it sitting in traffic. On my Gixxer750 it took about 40 min.
29:22 the rich laugh was coming out 😂😂
As an Angeleno, this is one of my favorite motorcycle videos of all time!
I've been saying it for a couple of years now - best bike show on youtube, period.
I loved the choice of motorcycles. Totally necessary for the job.
Just for a fun thought, id love to see how close a versys 650 (Battle Toad) can come to matching the time. I bet it would be close.
CxT (and F9) videos make my soul happy. I could watch Zach, Ari, amd Ryan doing what they love all day.
real stuff, takes me 45m on average from home to work in a car but under 30m on a motorcycle pretty much any time, even when congestion will take a car over an hour
Do they have the range?
I do not want an electric bycicle tbh i like my 2024 trail 125
Gentleman, I cannot thank you enough for doing this as I ride an rsv4 1100 and a Yamaha r1m and my wife doesn't believe for a second that a motorcycle can be faster than a car in any scenario. You've helped me give her my reasoning for riding motorcycles starting at 4 and I am now 53. And I totally agree, Lane splitting should be legal in every single state of the United States and its territories.
Top Gear vibes. Just missing Hammonds crashing, Clarkson ranting and May arriving last.
Spurge as Capt Slow?
This is way better than Top Gear: bikes and no fake scripted nonsense
always a pleasure to see ctxp episode come out :)
I guy I know rides his Harley from Long Beach to LA every day during rush hour he says it’s less than a half hour drive. He’s has over 100,000 on his Harley
Love the sound bites strapping on helmets, doing up buckles and folding in mirrors. Nice touch.
would have loved to see the addition of a couple 150-250 scooters
Same result as the motorcycle

Don't forget transportation to the airport, preflight planning and inspection, and transportation from the next airport.
And yes, I'm a pilot myself 😂
Yall should have tried Houston, TX in the middle of August😉
Agreed, from Phoenix!
This is better than top gear's attempt. The city and vehicle choices make sense.
Great content 😎
“Modest motorcycles” lol 😂
I'd ride my bicycles everywhere with that incredible Los Angeles weather, lane splitting, sight, so sweet, and year round motorcycling! (stares out winter at impending 6 months of winter)
Crappy weather in LA is good weather in most of the world 😂
I need a ringtone of Zack’s laughter.
Too small for Cali Freeways. That's why you don't see many scooters under 150cc in Socal.
Guys please do more CTXP! I love the series. Its like the grand tour equivalent, but with my two favorite motorcycle hosts!
They should have dug out the old Honda CT90 to see if it could still keep up. Although it probably wouldn't be much fun on the multi-lane highway. Assuming it's even legal.
24:26 That excitement launching the motorcycle is soo fun 😁 Them screaming in happiness is what makes us happy too 😂
I was expecting a proper scooter, you now like vespa or the MP3... 😅
Heck yeah! Love it when you guys are together! One of the best duos on TH-cam!
Well, if you're cycling into the office, you may need to add time for showering when you arrive there. Using an e-bike might help with that though.
Driving is actually the fastest way, but I prefer to pedal.
i love the spec breakdown and full gear suit up for the scooters.
Have a good day everyone!
Bicycles still win on time, because you don’t have to go to the gym! 😉
Every day is leg day when you're on a bicycle.👍🏼
With motorcycles you don't need to go to therapy.
Hi guys. Thank you for the fun video. Bicycles and scooters were fun to watch but glad it was you young ones and not me. Hearing you two laugh on your "average commuter motorcycles" was the best part. I laughed a lot.
Motorcycles are time machines, even basic bikes like these.
Yes, "basic".
i miss the road trip episodes, but this episode are gem. thanks guys
These videos are why I buy things from your website. just entertaining AF! ^_^
Insane quality, well done revzilla!
Loved the video guys! The build up waiting for you to get on the motorbikes!
I have often marveled at both of your motorcycle experiences and riding prowess, but bicycle safety basics are almost foreign to you guys! Wow!
lmao, Ari having a Dad Bod...
Love this episode! The videography, music and sound effects, and pacing were done really well. Thanks revzilla for continuing to make CTXP a reality!
It's not just fast and efficient. It starts your day on the best possible mood and you're having fun the whole ride.
