Man I'm 20 and I just started my welding career. I would love to show that man how to TIG weld. I feel like I could learn a lot from him too. 90 years and still kicking it is amazing and wholesome to see. Awesome video.
Starting a welding career at 20.. be prepared for arthritis and the back pain along with many a hot ass day.. wear your respirator and always go one shade darker.. your eyes and lungs get punished welding as a profession. Unless you catch a job doing fab work..
Most fab shop work is min wage or 25 cents higher than now....they won't tell you these things in welding school...and NO, wet welding isn't really a career option, it's just commercial diving nowdays....
What a legend. That man is sharp as a razor, because he still has purpose and direction in his life. Truly inspiring
And a home...very few are able to keep such wealth for so long nowdays....in fact even people that lived comfortably while they worked are finding homelessness in retirement

since the rear panel of the car is all riveted on, I think it might be nice to just extend the body out instead of cutting it. Making patch panels to extend the rear would be super easy since it's all relatively flat panels.

A bonding tape is sold that is very similar to what came from the factory. It is a bit of a mess to remove the old plastic and usually breaks when you try to. I wanted to make the comment because it is not just as easy as drilling out the rivets and taking the peice off. The rivets are also a special type, ones from the store are too tight and will crack the plastic.

You might as well redesign your own frame and suspension being that you already have the know how and I'm sure it'll be much better than the factory could ever do it. Good luck with it and I'll catch you on the next one.
That guy is 90 yrs old, and still getting out there enjoying life. That's awesome!
BTW, since you're going to be modifying the frame so much, would it be better to make a new one? That should also make it easier to incorporate a roll cage, which I'm sure this vehicle will need.

I think this project is GENIUS! You've got all the benefits of building a Busa Smart Car but with a unique body. Nobody else will have a Busa-swapped 80s electric micro car.

Do not cut off completely, leave the window frame. It will be hard to fit the engine but much nicer looking
Be careful, V. Short wheel base, with any kind of height can get "squirrely" at speed.

I used to drive a commuter car around my small town in the late 90's, it was one of my first cars. I got lucky and had gotten off the original owner and it had brand new batteries at the time. I drove it so much that people were always asking to buy it and one day i sold it, they were NOT 20k back then..lol I love what you're doing with yours. very cool.

Ahh. I almost bought both of those cars from that man about 18 months ago. I drove out to WV to see them and made him an offer, but we couldn't come to an agreement. He was a super nice guy though. I was going to keep one electric, but with modern batteries, motor, etc, and was going to motorcycle engine swap the other with a small parallel twin like a Kaw EX500. I'm glad someone bought one and is trying to make it a driveable car. Good luck with the project!

In Germany we have a lot of these driving around with a motorcycle engine from factory going 45kmh and a friend and I were joking around about doing the same thing as you do right now so iam watching this build with a lot of anticipation

Box in the engine in the back and add an air snorkel to help cool the engine, on the inside cover the motor enclosure with sound dampening insulation it will be sick

That guy had those for sale for some time. I was surprised no one had picked them up just from the rarity. Always seen them sitting there in the shed when I drove through williamstown.

Kinda reminds me of the Light Motors Action show that used to be a Disney World. They had a Corsa body car that had Hayabusa engines in them.
You could buy and upgrade electrical system for that thing and make it gnarly fast and long distance
Please put on a turbo 🤗 it is easy and the engine manage to put out solid and reliable 350hp without any bigger modifications 💪🏻

I'd definitely extend the chassis a bit to get the motor in and give you a chance to design something nice for the rear-end. It'd also make the car far more stable and easier to drive not to mention the fact you could redesign the body work to be more aero and look way cooler.
GSXRs of that age had a common charging issue due to rectifier box overheating. Might be related to track use and hot days; but once it goes, it takes out the alternator coils and what not. Mine would still charge on low rpm
Hop you build a sick car. Take you time even if it take 10-15 video and do something crazy. You have so much potential.

Hmm since it's a rare car, I hate to see it get all cut up, however, it didn't really have a life before and it sounds like your gonna do a great job on it. front engine would be nice but I don't see that working well. So look forward to what you choose to do man, Don't make it too fast though, you have no way of knowing what it will react like at certain speeds.
