I found this series a week ago and have finally binged watched up to the current episode. And it was with Porthos sailing my favorite ship!!!!! Thank you Porthos for your great content, keep em coming!

Ah, the Cog is your favourite ship! The square sails do feel good when the wind isn't coming from the direction we want to go in! :D
Thank you for the compliment of binging the series! I'll try to make another episode soon!

@@PorthosUK My Cog really came into it's own when I added a gaff to the mast. Easily my favorite of the starter ships, and a good intro to my favorite overall ship the Brig.
I see a lot of folks add a second mast, but that kinda makes it too tippy for my liking. I am however, rather patient when it comes to a storm. I won't sleep with the mainsail down, too paranoid.

It seems there is a lot of love for the Cog. Maybe if I remember about the gaff I'll add one.

Nice episode, nothing wrong with small short episodes!
A tip for the square sails: because of sailwinds simplified mechanics, on squaresails, you can just fullly let go of both angling ropes and the sail will auto balance itseld to whatever it needs from the wind direction (except when the wind is too far ahead and the sail cant turn more. The only time you need to actively angle the square sail is when you need to force it to change sides when tacking, and when you need to force it into the wind to get the ship to go backwards (wich is a great thing of square sails, as it lets you maneouver your ship in any wind direction).
About the windvane; the cog is the only ship that has it, and the reason that it points to a different direction than the flag, is because all flags show the apparent wind (direction of the wind + direction of movement of the ship), but the windvane shows actual wind direction, because as it is stuck to the mast and only pivots on its axle, it is only turned by the wind and the ships movement has no effect on it.
    Pipe smoking instructions:
a box of tobacco has 6 pipefulls of tobacco
each pipefull lasts for about 6 to 8 drags
to smoke a drag of tobacco, hold R or the left mouse button until you hear your character exhaling (and see the smoke come out the "mouth"; think of it as a sip of a drink, but instead of forcing you to take a full sip with a cup, it will not count as drunk until you have tilted the cup enough.
if between every drag of tobacco you put your pipe on your inventory it will be extinguished and the tobacco will not get used up (it will be relighted when you take the next drag), if you leave it out and lighted, it will consume the tobacco pipeful slowly (you can ignore it inbetween drags, but not if you are leaving it alone for a long time), the smoke of a lighted pipe that has been left out will affect the character just by standing on the smoke trail (and it also moves with the wind, so it can be used like the flags).
In the case of the black tobacco, it does wake you up with each drag, but a little bit after you finish it will go back down, it is best used to push the need for sleep away for a few moments when you really need to stay awake (for example when getting to a dock and needing to aproach and attach the ropes, but sleeps threatens to make you black out, it will give you the needed few extra moments awake).
Lastly and before i forget. The prices on the trading book are skewed, they are brought in and updated by invisible NPC ships that move between islands, you can see that the infromation of prices in a port has a number attached to it that tells you how old the information is (for example, in Fort Aestrin you might have the prices of Mount Malefic that were updated by a ship that stopped by yesterday, and had stopped at Mount Malefic 2 days earlyer, thus the information is 3 days old), some information is missing because it has been too long since a ship has come from that port, so they do not know the prices there (on the other hand if you know you are in a producing port, like Eastwind for ores and Malefic for foodstuffs, you might gamble that the product is cheap here and as no ship has gone to that other port in so long the price might be high).
To sum it up, the price when you are going to sell will most likely be different from the one you saw they were buying at when you bought the cargo, so use the recipts to enshure you are making a profit.
I hope this helps, (even if it is very long comment)
and here is to seeing the adventures of Lady Cas in the future!

      @PorthosUK  ปีที่แล้ว

Oh thank you that is a good tip! I'll practice letting both ropes of the square sail out for the next episode!
I still don't quite get how the ship moving through air with no wind doesn't crate relative wind that would effect the direction of a windvane.
Ah, so tobacco isn't as over powered as it 1st appeared. (I have never passed out from lack of sleep though.)
Thank you again for the comment, I do appreciate it.

Guess who's back, kids! No, not him! Porthos! Porthos who you ask? PORTHOS! Ah, maybe you're too young to remember when he last posted....
That NPC has a very interesting looking boat. That looks like a "modern" ketch rig! I wonder if you can buy that next... :) Either way. I like to see the progresso f hte game, and see it come to life more and more with actual NPCs on the water. You're not the only sailor any more. Hooray!

Yes, it'll be good to see a few more NPC boats at sea. :)

Ah yes, the square sail. I too had the false confidence when first sailing with one in favorable winds. The return journey dashed that confidence! I've tried many a sail combination before settling on simply adding a gaff sail. I also had okay results with a nice caravel setup.
Switching out to the lower cabin helps give you more possibilities for sail configurations but I love the look and feel of the castle style cabin. I had my upper deck set up with a nice lounge area for me to go relax with a nice pipe full of "green tobacco."
Your video inspired me to finally start the journey back from Chronos in my trusty Sanbuq. All the big ship customization was not fully implemented when I set off so I'm eager to inadvertently make some abominations that can barely leave port.

    • @PorthosUK
      @PorthosUK  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Haha! That's so cool that my video inspired you to set sail again! I love that! Thank you for the compliment!
Yeah, looks like we need to do a lot of tacking to travel upwind, more so with square sails.
The chill out area you described setting up on the upper deck sounds great! I do need some more decorations and furniture.
Thank you for your continued support!

Always love your Sailwind stuff! Really like the cog, probably my fave of the small ships.
Would only recommend to add a Gaff sail on the cog for helping sail close to the wind.

WB Porthos. How is work treating you?
When you get to the brig but a big staysail on it it balances out the ship and a second gaff on the foremast doesn't hurt either. But big staysail will allow you to have your wheel centre. And then it's easy to tell how much wind there is as your wheel center will move when under a gale.

@@PorthosUK Ooohh! Thank you very much!!! That is so flattering! I will consider recording something with that in mind. I have been busy with another venue, if I can say so myself. This week I spent a huge amount of time conducting. Classes everyday with a concert on friday. I have videos of the practice. If you have any interest, let me know. They are unlisted, so I'd have you to send a link. The concert video will be public. I just didn't take the time to edit out the bits from the beginning and ent.
By the way, I already took a peek at your latest upload. Just did not watch it full yet, so no comment left so far. See ya, ma bro
