Oh, and the 3-coat works perfectly fine when you're trained correctly and installed by professionals

What is the reason for focusing on "newer" stucco - clad homes? Would a 100 year old stucco structure be less concerning regarding water intrusion?

During the 80s and 90s the craftmanship took a nosedive. They weren't built with the same quality and techniques that they had been up until that point and corners were being cut. Most people stay away from stucco these days due to the high labor cost (because it has to be done absolutely perfect). Hope this helps!

There is building code for stucco (and flashing of all penetrations). If you follow this you won't have a problem. 2 layers of wrb minimum and proper flashing is no problem. Doesn't matter what kind of siding you use if they don't install wrb and flashing correctly. You will have water intrusion.

This is true for northern states, where moisture is an issue. In AZ, California, and other Hot and dry southern states it is ideal.

Yeah right. Just put a doorway in a client's wall. Inner mesh was rusted and interior stucco was falling out like crumbs. In San diego.

@@gabel.5269 San Diego is very humid, but at the same time how good was the quality of work that was done on the stucco. I'm not saying all cases are the same, but I'm in AZ and if you come down here you will hardly see anything other than stucco on homes

Thank you for the info. Explanation is a little vague. @0:22 stucco concerns "Homes built in the late 80s through today"
Traditional 3 coat portland cement stucco could last for hundreds of years and is still commonly used here in California. It seems traditional 3 coat portland cement stucco system was first widely used in track home in about the 1950s?
There has been issues with synthetic acrylic and EIFS
For moisture testing, instead of drilling holes in the stucco walls that might puncture the felt paper or cause possible addition cracks, I use a moisture detector on the interior drywall and exterior stucco.
If there is high moisture behind the walls, there will be a big difference in the moisture readings from a dry area and area of moisture.
I use the Extech M0280, pinless digital moisture meter.

Thank you for this information. What would a high reading be? About to purchase a 1920 Stucco home and due to sign paperwork this week, but getting a little nervous about the possible mold behind it. Any other tips on how I can ensure it's not rotten? Unfortunately, there are no stucco inspectors in my town. The description of the says it is made of stucco and cement.

What caused the orange stains at the bottom of stucco walls?

    • @blackhemi8
      @blackhemi8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sand/mud. When it rains, mud splashes on the stucco and it slowly, but surely starts to get stain.

Hi, I live in New Jersey and I’m currently in the process of getting estimates to remodeling my 1962 colonial style home. Currently it has cedar shaker shingles on the front and asbestos panels on the side and back. I was looking to either go with vinyl siding or possibly stucco in the front of the house with vinyl siding on the sides and back. What concerns should I have with picking a contractor to do stucco. Thanks

Why do people in the east coast only finish their front of the house? I visited New York and EVERY house there only had the front looking nice but the sides that ugly siding that has a lot of lines or layers or whatever.

Don't use vinyl it will fail before the stuff in the house now will.

Valuable information. Considering upgrading my siding to vinyl or stucco but it seems like new vinyl siding is more suitable for NY climate.

Stucco is premium quality, it’s much better than siding and stone. Stucco is also more fire proof, which is good.
