as a novice traveler , may i offer this advice , embrace the suck because many will never be able to experience even the worst of times . I have flown in planes where the seat was broken or no seat at all and yet this was an amazing flight . Unforeseen challenges happen and no trip is ever perfect . Live the life and Love your people
Our honeymoon flight from Mexico back to LA was so empty (about 8 ppl tops) that my husband bounced from seat to seat to see the views. All the food allotted for a full passenger flight was offered to us for free so we had two dinner meals & piles of snacks. They also had bowls of candy for the kids but there were only three onboard so they took clean garbage bags, filled them with all the candy, & gave it to them. This was back when smoking was allowed on flights so we sat in back & lit up. Usually we didn't smoke on flights because we were aware of the close proximity to others. The stewards having so few passengers were extra attentive & always engaging with us. It was an experience we'd never have again.
I feel so fortunate...I was on this same train from Seattle to L.A. and train was spot on in time. I was also lucky to see Washington and Oregon during full day and the views were amazing!
Eight years ago the Mrs and I took this train and route, altho we only had a roomette, not the full room like these nice and extremely patient travellers chose. The beds were quite comfortable and we slept like babies. Surprisingly decent food and fortunately we didn't have any negative issues with the dining or any other situation for that matter. In fact, we arrived in Seattle on time, which from what I hear is a bit unusual for Amtrak. Have to say overall we really enjoyed the experience.
I made this trip, LA to Seattle, riding coach the entire trip. I found sleeping in the coach seats very comfortable. The trip was in January and true to Amtrack there were several long delays, one waiting for snow removal crossing the mountains in Oregon and another waiting for repair of a cracked rail. A great ride as long as you are not in a hurry!
Exactly!! Anyone ridding Amtrak needs to know they can’t be anywhere in a hurry!! I mistakenly thought I could do a trip even a day after my train was supposed to arrive…..I arrived to my destination at 2 am with the event starting at 10am….it doesn’t mater because I expected this!!
Yes do give it another try. My husband and I just did a 10 day Amtrak train adventure. We started out in Cleveland, OH (close to our home). Was in coach seating area from Cleveland to Chicago. There we boarded another Amtrak train (sleeper room w/private bathroom in room) from Chicago to Seattle WA. Spent 2 nights in Seattle and then boarded another Amtrak train from Seattle WA to Emeryville, CA (had a roomette). Then spent a day in San Fransico, CA and one night there. Boarded Amtrak in Emeryville CA and headed back towards to Chicago IL again (in a sleeper bedroom w/ private toilet). Then coach seating from Chicago IL to Cleveland OH. Overall we had a wonderful experience and the only 2 times we had delays was in Denver CO and then coming into Cleveland OH at the end (just 30 minutes delay both times). The food was awesome and we slept well most nights except from Denver CO to IA. The train really rocked and so sleep wasn't the best that night!!! Of course our bedroom was on the upper level, so that may have made a difference!!!
Thank you two so much for this. I was thinking about this same trip myself. But now rethinking it as I would be going alone. It might be sorta ok if there was someone else with me. Thank you again. I will try a shorter trip. 😊
I did this reverse trip, Seattle to LA, in 2022 and miraculously we arrived into LA 10 minutes early. I couldn't believe it. I was expecting to be multiple hours late! Props to you guys for remaining so positive and upbeat.
Wow! I remember I took the trip and a couple I met completely missed their flight back to the East Coast because the train was delayed by 12+ hours Mechanical issues and freight traffic can really mess things up. Felt so bad for them. My husband and I did the Orlando to NYC and was delayed over 24 hours. He has since refused to get on an Amtrak :(
Our family will NEVER step foot on another Amtrak. The Florida to Colorado, and every state in between, was a living nightmare of breakdowns, stalls, oops..no food..sorry..23 hrs stuck on a train, mess. Public transportation would have been an upgrade! I’ve always wanted to take the Denver to Grand Junction CO train, thru Glenwood Canyon..but …. ;-) The west coastal views and forested mtns of the pac north west look so beautiful! In retrospect now..think we’ll stick to our truck ;-)
I was 18 years old, having completed my first year of college when I took 3 Amtrak trains from San Diego to Miami, Florida. The first train was the best. I also spent many hours on the observation deck. We went through Colorado, New Mexico to Chicago where I changed to my second train. Met many people. From Chicago to Washington DC where I took the last train to Miami. By myself. It took 5 days total. And I paid $200 for a seat. It was hard to sleep with the stops and the noise. But it was an experience I will never forget nor repeat.
I’m originally from Portland Oregon & have used the train a number of times. I’m aware that freight trains have priority since there is no side rail long enough for them. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Earlier this year I took Amtrak from San Francisco/Oakland to Reno & it was a great trip & luckily there was no serious delays. Sorry to hear about the dinning room problems. Glad that you handled things well. Thanks again!
I took another train from Missouri to Los Angeles. The first night sleeping in the chair was adventurous, the second night was not so good and the third was "please, get me out of here!" I spent the whole time hoping no one would take the seat next to me. The bathroom got disgustingly worse each day. The porters told me they never cleaned it during the trip. But there were wonderful views of the back country, places you would never see from the road. Despite it all, I would do it again.
Amtrak travel is not for everyone. Sorry you had everything go wrong. We saw on the news the issue that held your train up. Been watching you for years. I think you are a car traveler, one in charge of his own destiny. I would suggest day segments though. That is what we do. The Denver to Salt Lake segment on the California Zephyr in winter is STUNNING. We stayed on a couple days at each end for a mini-vacation.
The two of you are amazing with such beautiful and optimistic attitudes in the midst of multiple unexpected events. You turned lemon into lemonade and with smiles. Thank you for sharing this experience.
I did this trip in coach for $300. Sleep was pretty miserable even with ear plugs. There was a delay at one point that was about 5 hours. That said it is an amazing trip with memorable views!
We have done the train from Oxnard to San Diego about 3 times trip to catch cruise ships and twice for returns. We have been really lucky since our first to rides had been on time, if they hadn’t, we would have missed our cruise. It was a big plus for getting to the cruise ship. Hop on the train until you get to downtown San Diego, then walk about 1/2 to the ship. No hassle of parking a car or flight or rental car. Being able move around is nice than the 3-3 1/2 hour ride in an automobile.
I've done many long Amtrak trips. Multiple delays are common, but I've never had as many as you did on this trip! I always arrived at least on the scheduled day! You should consider the California Zephyr if you ever want to do another Amtrak video. It runs from Oakland to Chicago. The scenery is spectacular between Sacramento and Denver! Travel through the Feather River Canyon (Sierras) and the Rocky Mountains (should) occur during daylight hours.
One thing to expect about long distance Amtrak travel is to expect delays. Freight trains have priority and if they are delayed Amtrak is delayed. Your trip delays was at that extreme level. I did that trip years ago and we got in 3 hrs late. And with limited meal service that adds to the experience. Imagine those in coach.
Yeah a couple hours is more typical, people need to understand that a nine hour delay is not the typical experience. I would never go more than five hours or so in a coach seat. Those chairs are comfortable but not nearly as much as being able to lie down and go to sleep. 🙂
I had a great experience on the Southwest Chief last summer despite being 4 hours late to my destination! I think if you give another try you will find a pleasurable experience!
You say things like "a perfect storm" and "everything that could have gone wrong went wrong." Truth is, this is exactly what traveling by Amtrak is always like.
@@jeanruecker4591 I was just delayed 6 hours heading the opposite direction, had the entire power cut off from my cabin and then could tell when my cabin train was jacked up (to remove the bolder) because I was sliding off the bed! All I could do was laugh and say “of course we’re delayed!!! At least we didn’t hit someone on the tracks this time!!” Something that has happened to me at least 3 times while riding the Pacific Surfliner!! When you hit somebody, you are there for HOURS due to police investigations.
@@DeannaSmith-oj3kjMeh, I’ve been on MANY delayed trains, that’s what you expect!! So far, the main reason my trains have been delayed is because of people of the tracks with 2 cases resulting in injury and death, causing police involvement aka homicide. My last Amtrak trip delay was caused by a freak of nature (with a bolder falling down a hill and could have derailed us!!) I will still ride with them again!
Somewhere, there's a TH-camr editing his video about his Amtrak journey that starts off with his having to sleep in the Seattle terminal because his evening train that was supposed to have arrived at 7:50 PM didn't get there until 5:00 AM...
Some hotels will give you a special rate in situations like this where you can go lie down, shower etc. there are many hotels near Seattle Amtrak station, worth looking in to
Took my son on this for his high school graduation and 18th birthday gift. He’s ASD and always loved trains. I’ve never seen him so sociable! We loved the trip - food was good. Cool seeing the backlots in la, but the northern stretches were the most picturesque
I was on that train too. Fortunately i got off in Martinez. All the long distance Amtrak routs have been explored my me. Delays are part of the experience, do not take Amtrack if you lack the capacity to accept or tolerate delay. Enjoy the exposure to many parts of the USA you most likely will never see again. I find it fun to just see new things...
". . . do not take Amtrack if you lack the capacity to accept or tolerate delay." In other words, don't take Amtrack if you expect normal, on-time train service. Remember when running the trains on time used to be the DEFINITION of reliability?!?!?
That's a great attitude but a lot of people aren't aware of the realities of traveling on Amtrak. I think they should be more open and honest in a way where people do understand. My father takes Amtrak from NE Texas to Southern California and sometimes there's huge delays and sometimes none! lol Those freight trains are usually the problem.
@@mrtriffid Long distance trains can't be compared to local or intercity trains of 4-5 hours tops. People take these for a vacation, not to get somewhere on time.
I’ve taken the Coastal train from Sacramento to Van Nuys. I enjoyed the trip very much and much more when we were passing Vandenburg AFB! So much history that I never knew came out from that story teller. If you ever ride the California Zephyr, the story teller is also great about the Donner Party. I love the Amtrak and yes delays are pain but I would rather take the train than drive.
We've done thus trip several times over the years, Portland to LA round trip, and have had delays, but nothing as horrible as your experience. 😮 We enjoyed the food and our bedroom. Did it last December, the snow thru the Cascades was beautiful. Sunrise on Mt Shasta is always amazing. Thanks for all your videos!
I've watched so many Amtrak videos, and everyone has loved the experience and can't wait to go on another one.....but I've NEVER seen anyone complain as much as you two. You had the biggest space and the nicest room on the entire train. What was the rush in getting somewhere? Were you going to miss a connecting flight? Was there something urgent waiting for you on the other end? Why not just put your feet up and read your book and enjoy the experience that you were there for? Albeit you both had smiles on your faces while you were complaining, but wow, I hope you just fly to the beach next time.
I'm here in McCall, Idaho on vacation watching this video and its 3:00 in the morning. Maintaining a good attitude and going with the flow will make life more interesting. My attitude would likely be half and half because I like exploring new things. I used to meet my girlfriend from 1993-1996 at Shasta Koa Campground near the town of Shasta when I was stationed in Point Mugu, Ca and she lived on Whidbey Island in Washington State. She is now my wife and weve been together for 34 years. Our experiences have been unique as well in life but exploring the world with a partner is nice. Its interesting that as modern as our country is to other countries that we such an antiquated train system.
We call it Mount Shasta, even though it’s the city, not precisely the mountain. It’s short for City of Mount Shasta. Helps avoid confusing it with Shasta Lake, Shasta county and Lake Shasta which are many miles south of us. Glad romance blossomed at the KOA.
We've ridden the Coast Starlight several times. Delays are common, mostly because freight trains get priority. You had some mechanical problems, and some bad luck. We had delays, but our worst one was in November, 2011, when a Cal Train (not Amtrak) engineer ran a red light in the Oakland station and rammed our engine head on. He was only going 10 mph and we were standing still, so it could have been far worse. But our engine was disabled and much of crew, having retired for the night to their car just behind the engine, was injured. There were injuries on our train and the other one as well. The next morning, after being towed to the train yard, we got a new engine and were on our way. But we had a very small crew left, so dining car service was packaged items and coffee. We were able to get a new full crew in Klamath Falls, but the accident and delay put us so far behind that Amtrak took us off that night in Portland so they could turn the train around, and sent us on busses to Seattle. Amtrak staff was WONDERFUL to us, made sure we were comfortable and apologized even though it wasn't their fault. We received a credit for part of the trip. We have ridden Amtrak many times since and the Coast Starlight is still our favorite train.
Your journey on Amtrak is a true testament of what can go wrong. Whenever I decide to ride Amtrak's long-distance trains, I give myself an extra day between connections (trains, planes, or cruises). Trains can be delayed by 10 hours or more due to equipment failures, derailments, accidents, or weather. Amtrak's objective is to get passengers to their destinations safely. One thing I've noticed is some travelers have no regard for others in Sightseer Lounge Cars by taking up space all day long although everyone's been asked to limit their time to 1-2 hours during daylight hours-particularly while going through scenic areas.
@@mrtriffid there is no reason to “apologize“ for stating facts. Congress has been trying to strangle AMTRAK’s funding almost since its inception. Despite this, it has more than doubled its ridership between 1972, its first full year in operation, and the start of the pandemic. All facts, which you can verify yourself if you care to. Can AMTRAK do and be better? Absolutely. But not while the very governmental body that created it tries to sabotage it at almost every turn.
Crazy delays are common on Amtrak because of sharing the track with freight. Don't plan anything time-sensitive and enjoy the journey. The dining car is a problem, though. Same thing happened to me on this train in June. Seems the Coast Starlight needs a new kitchen!
Make it the trifecta. My wife and I had a big delay when the Coast Starlight had a fire in the middle of the Vandenberg Air Force Base about half way between Santa Barbara and San Luis Opispo. The fire department from Vandenberg put out the fire and did a lengthy inspection before the train got moving again. Same trip had a wheel bearing on one of the cars lock up With the usual delays for passing freights we got to Seattle about six hours late and the rental car place had already closed for the night. I thought we’d lose our reservation but the next morning the rental car place (National) was very understanding about Amtrak running late. Can’t let one bad trip discourage you. Have made quite a few long & short trips on Amtrak, they’re usually OK.
I've always wanted to take the Coast Starlight up to Seattle, but I'm glad I found out about and am appreciative of your "adventure" (suffering) and will be aware of this if ever I get the opportunity to take this trip. I would definitely let any hotel I reserve at the destination know that I'm taking the train and I also feel better about bringing DVDs/Blu Rays on trips like these when you don't know when and for how long you may not have internet access.
I’ve traveled Amtrak several times. One journey from Minneapolis/St Paul to Seattle was not very enjoyable but at a later date took another Amtrak train adventure and it was fun and fabulous. Soon I’ll be taking the Starlight to Seattle from Palm Desert. Your delays were incredibly long- one never knows how the train ride will shake out. Thanks for your enjoyable video!
Can't believe that in 1987 my daughter and I took that train ride from L.A. to San Francisco. It was an credible journey. Long time ago so no problems with train. Views fantastic both mountains and ocean. Food good too. We just chose coach seats. No regrets. Aloha 🌺
Back in early 1970s took California Zeffer from Denver to Oakland. We were with the Pacific Railroad Society and a car just for our group. Because we were rail fans we all ate in the dinning car and when we left Reno, the dinning car ran out of food. The conductor stopped the train in a small town in the Sierra Nevadas and took the chief of service to the grocery store where she bought bread and peanut butter and jelly so she could at least feed us something.
I have slept in coach twice. I found it comfortable. One position sleeping and yes, a bed would be better but it is doable with a neck pillow and blanket.
A couple years ago, we took the same train, but south from San Francisco. Due to some issue, the dining car only served frozen entrees. We had soggy frozen pizza. Not what we expected with our multi hundred dollar room. Add that it took 3x as long to train than drive. Once in a lifetime experience. Once!
As a SoCal native transplanted to Norway for over 40 years, I'm sorry to hear your journey was so unfortunate. I also have to feel sorry for the crew. My train experiences here have been much better. But I appreciated all the amazing views you showed as they brought back countless memories
There were many crews. In addition to crews assigned a specific part of the trip, relief crews take over if the assigned crew is on duty more than 12 hours. So you get delays waiting for relief crews on top of the other delays.
The shots you got of Mount Shasta were just incredible. This is one of my favorite travel channels on TH-cam. I like the fact that you're not only go to interesting places and do videography but your narration is excellent.
Twenty five years ago, my husband and I took the same train on our honeymoon , we booked a room on the 2nd level, we had the most beautiful experience. Our food was included. So, If anyone is interested, I suggest you experience it for yourself.
I've done this trip multiple times as I live near Seattle and have family in California. I usually get a roomette which is great for one person alone, the food is always pretty decent and I'm sorry you didn't get the flat iron steak, they're very good!! Yes, sometimes there are delays, your experience was unusual with how long the delays were plus the kitchen fire, you called it right with the "perfect storm". I would encourage you to try again in the future, I would also suggest The Empire Builder which runs from Seattle to Chicago, fabulous train and beautiful views. Thank you for your share.
Wow! An extra nine hours on Amtrak and all the great views at no charge😃 it sounds like a deal to me🤩 good thing they didn’t charge you double for the extra time. And just look at all the weight you lost by not eating. I’m retired and I don’t have anywhere to go would’ve been a great trip for me lol
Give it another run We took the sunset unlimited from alpine Texas to LA It was great and we plan to take several more trips up the pacific coast when we retire next year god willing
👋👋 I love your honesty and how politely your views give the situations you both faced through your travel from L.A. Union Station to Seattle WA. I've done that trip via car, plane, and train a few years back. Only thing mount Shasta, Klamath Falls regarding the forest woods was during the night dark and early morning coming into the cascade and several tunnels ... didn't have sleeper, we did coach. I thought you executed your presentation very well👏👏👏💯💯
Years ago I was on the same trip and sitting in the cabin where they serve drinks, everything was going great until some dude got kind of drunk and started being really loud and extremely rude to women and he was pretty sketchy so people were a little bit scared of him. All of the sudden, in the middle of nowhere, the train came to a super abrupt stop and before we knew it there were policeman aboard. They came into the bar and grabbed the guy and took him off the train as we all cheered and clapped! It was super cool and the mood in the room turned back to relaxing and somebody bought a round of drinks for everyone. 😂
Back in the mid-90's I was naïve and thought I could take the train from San Diego to Sacramento where I had to take an exam for work. I planned to study on the train and arrive in the evening to a hotel near the exam location. HA! The first problem we had was constant delays due to freight traffic on the overbooked tracks. The second problem was one of our engines broke down (engine threw a rod). The remaining engine had to drag the dead engine and the entire train over the mountains at 5 mph. I finally got into Sacramento with just enough time before my exam to take a quick shower in the hotel room I never got to sleep in. Since then I have been on many Amtrak trips and have come to understand that Amtrak is nursing along mostly 20th century museum-age equipment on tracks they don't own. Every trip is a dice roll.
My husband and I rode the SW Chief , LA to Chicago, round trip. We never laughed so much! Constant delays, but thank goodness the dining car was operating. I slept well, but my poor husband woke up every time they pulled the horn and the ding, ding, ding while going through train crossings😂 He said never again!
I did that trip solo and it was thrilling seeing all the country. I had my own mini room food was great. It used to bê include If you had a sleeper ticket and l pigged out
OMG... I feel so sad and sorry to hear this account. I took took the train cross country, "several years ago," and I was much younger then so I was okay. However, now that I am older, I would be very unhappy if all these delays occurred, especially give how expensive the tickets are.
Really cool video! I grew up in extreme northern California where this train goes through in the middle of the night. Thus, we've never taken it. When you were at Klamath Lane, you mentioned that you saw Black Butte. I don't think that would be possible, as it is in California and is next to Mt. Shasta. I really appreciate you showing us the different levels of accommodations. Too bad about the dining car.
20% voucher is an insult. They had no dining car for the bulk of the trip and were nine hours late! Yeah, a 80% voucher or 50% refund should have been offered.
I took the train from LA to Salinas about 3 years ago but in coach. By the time I booked a coach (last-minute family issue)seat, I couldn't be on the ocean side. And I was waiting for my booked ride which was about 45 minutes late from San Marino to the train station, and it was too late to check my rather large suitcase due to having to help out in Pacific Grove for a few weeks. But I did go up to the observation car, and half empty the whole time, and I got a table and put my suitcase under it. It was hard taking it up those steep, narrow stairs. I never rode the train before except as a child and didn't realize my suitcase would have been safe on the racks downstairs. Stayed in the observation car the whole trip. No issues, and I was on time, and family didn't have to wait to pick me up and take me to Monterey. A few months ago, I booked a train trip from Albany Oregon to Seattle for my husband and myself. He had never been on a longer train trip. I booked a roomette even though it was a 7 hour trip because now I am immune-compromised from chemo and we wear masks around people and didn't want to wear masks for 7 hours straight. The porter said we could go to the dining car, but I advised him I couldn't be unmasked and he brought all our meals. He even wore a mask when he came in and didn't have to because we always masked up when people are close. Anyway, we only had to wait for maybe 2 freight trains, and it was brief. We will take another trip from Albany to SoCal and try out the beds. Sorry you had so much trouble. Kathleen
I’ve done coach from California to Louisiana with 5 kids but we made sure we to the very front on both side so that there were no seats in front of us and it was twice the led room so that my youngest kids could spread out. Wasn’t bad because of the planning!
We loved this episode. We laughed and laughed. You guys took all the adversity in stride which allowed us to enjoy it. The only thing missing would be watching Pops try to get into the upper bunk. 😂
Very cool. I film Amtrak trains in Chatsworth, Simi Valley, and Moorpark. I have taken the Amtrak from Simi Valley to Oakland. It took nine hours. I enjoy filming them rather than riding them.
Their experience is NOT typical. There will be delays for freight trains, but the Coast Starlight is a great ride. We've never had that kind of multiple, long time delays. Our only long time one was an accident caused by another train ramming ours that was not the fault of Amtrak. The food is great, views fantastic and the staff always wonderful. Please try it.
Appreciated your honest review of Coast Starlight. We’ve heard of others having a similar experience. Sad that it seems to be common rather than a one-off. But my husband and I applaud the positive spirit you both showed in dealing with all the disappointments/setbacks. 👍🏼
We traveled from Seattle to Harrisburg Pa. 3days 2 train changes. No problem s good food ,met some nice people and the train staff was great. I agree that the upper bunk was uncomfortable.
Get back on the rails! I've been on all Amtrak routes and have been delayed but nothing as dramatic as yours. I think the Amtrak "universe" wanted to test your resolve. There is nothing so romantic as traveling thru the US on Amtrak, even weight the delays. If you don't make exact plans for the end of your trip, you'll enjoy the ride so much more. Enjoy the journey, as they say. That's what it is all about. And how was Seattle? A lovely city I have been to many times. . See you again...on the rails.
I've taken the Coach Starlight from Portland to L.A. a few times. I don't sleep well when traveling, and although the seats are fine for sitting, I don't recommend trying to sleep in them. It is however better than sleeping on a red eye flight over the Atlantic. The main reason for the delays is that Amtrak doesn't own the tracks! They are owned by freight companies, so freight trains always have the right of way. This experience is typical, not unusual.
Paso Robles is a cute town to visit via car or train transiting between LA and Bay Area. We enjoyed their restaurants even though it's such a small town.
Great video guys! I'm a lifelong die-hardtrain fanatic aka a rail fan so I've traveled a lot on Amtrak. Now I'm from NY while I've as yet to travel from Los Angeles to Seattle, but I've traveled to Philly, Delaware, Boston, Virginia, D.C., Chicago, Salt Lake City Utah, & Seattle. You guys should really think about going from Los Angeles to NY!
I’ve been on the Starlight quite a few times and it’s never ever on time. Ever. One time we had to spend the night with our whole high school band at one of the California stops. I don’t remember which town it was. I slept on the floor. I was not a happy camper. But it really is a beautiful train ride otherwise.
I cannot believe they only offered you 20% off of a future trip! Absolutely inexcusable! I rode Amtrak twice a month for 13 years and I could literally write a book about all of the nightmares I went through. I’m so thankful I don’t have to depend on Amtrak anymore! I’m thankful you showed the reality of riding Amtrak.
I was super excited about Amtrak's USA Rail Pass about 4 years ago.I bought a total of 5 of them over a 2 year period.Even giving them the benefit of the doubt I finally realized that Amtrak sucks.
I’m sorry you and Amy had such a bad experience on Amtrak but yes I think you should give it another chance!! I’ve traveled to Michigan a few times and was always on time!! And I also slept in coach (well) not actually slept it’s very noisy and people getting on and off!! So if you’re doing a long trip I wouldn’t suggest it!! But I always enjoy your videos!! You and pop can be quite entertaining!! But it’s nice to see Amy!! Keep safe and may God bless you all ❤❤❤❤
I've taken the Coast Starlight probably 4 or 5 times round trip from Portland to LA, when I was in school (a looong time ago!). Going southbound is kind of magical, as the train goes through the forests in southern Oregon at night and the sky is super dark. Oddly, that was my favorite time in the observation car! I'd go with a group of friends, and a few would get off (coming home) at various points like Eugene, Davis, SLO, Ventura... going back to school was fun as they got on - when the Harry Potter books came out the Hogwarts Express kinda reminded me of going to boarding school on the Coast Starlight.
Wow, so sad for the train system! I’ve been wanting to do this route but now I’m not so sure! Thanks for sharing your… adventure? Malfunction? Mishaps? lol… I don’t know what to call it but for sure it was a trip! 😂 Glad you finally made it!
Years ago I traveled from LA to North Carolina via AMTRAC and back and it was a wonderful experience! I would do it again except I would get the sleeper car.

I'm in no hurry but keep the booze flowing !
Absolutely
Thank you two so much for this. I was thinking about this same trip myself. But now rethinking it as
I would be going alone.
He has since refused to get on an Amtrak :(
@@bearyylovessyouuWow! They completely missed their flight?! Not just partially missed it?
Once in a lifetime experience!
I’d do it!!
What a relaxing trip!
I love trains, what a beautiful train it was as well!
❤️👍🏻🥰
I’m originally from Portland Oregon & have used the train a number of times. I’m aware that freight trains have priority since there is no side rail long enough for them. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Earlier this year I took Amtrak from San Francisco/Oakland to Reno & it was a great trip & luckily there was no serious delays. Sorry to hear about the dinning room problems. Glad that you handled things well. Thanks again!
We've taken the California Zepher too and enjoyed it.
This is the most "glass-half-full" video I've ever seen on youtube :)
Train trips it’s about enjoying an experience specially with a love on!
What I heard was a lot of whining! If getting some place quickly is the priority, what are you doing on a train?
Exactly!
Loving the perpetual bedhead
😂😂😂
I did this trip in coach for $300. Sleep was pretty miserable even with ear plugs. There was a delay at one point that was about 5 hours. That said it is an amazing trip with memorable views!
My coach seat from San Luis Obispo, CA to Portland, OR was only $30 in 92'.
Have to commend your attitude. I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for not showing ugly frustration. I still want to try a train ride.
Amtrak: Yesterday’s train tomorrow!
No, it isn't. Delays, yes, because the freights take priority, but the dining car problem was a fluke.
Lol
@@jeanruecker4591 I was just delayed 6 hours heading the opposite direction, had the entire power cut off from my cabin and then could tell when my cabin train was jacked up (to remove the bolder) because I was sliding off the bed! All I could do was laugh and say “of course we’re delayed!!! At least we didn’t hit someone on the tracks this time!!” Something that has happened to me at least 3 times while riding the Pacific Surfliner!! When you hit somebody, you are there for HOURS due to police investigations.
@@zoobaby2003That's so sad. 😢
36 hours is insane
The oak tree at the Santa Barbara station is so stunning.
Amtrak is for people who have time and patience. Enjoying America inch by inch.
Well said. Travelers need to be aware AMTRAK will always be delayed because they do own the trackage.
😂
And rest for us!!
It sounds wonderful until it isn’t
@@DeannaSmith-oj3kjMeh, I’ve been on MANY delayed trains, that’s what you expect!! So far, the main reason my trains have been delayed is because of people of the tracks with 2 cases resulting in injury and death, causing police involvement aka homicide. My last Amtrak trip delay was caused by a freak of nature (with a bolder falling down a hill and could have derailed us!!) I will still ride with them again!
Thank you for your realistic video. I wish train travel would be more popular and more reliable.
Somewhere, there's a TH-camr editing his video about his Amtrak journey that starts off with his having to sleep in the Seattle terminal because his evening train that was supposed to have arrived at 7:50 PM didn't get there until 5:00 AM...
Oh that's sounds miserable... So sorry that happened to you
Some hotels will give you a special rate in situations like this where you can go lie down, shower etc. there are many hotels near Seattle Amtrak station, worth looking in to
Took my son on this for his high school graduation and 18th birthday gift. He’s ASD and always loved trains. I’ve never seen him so sociable! We loved the trip - food was good. Cool seeing the backlots in la, but the northern stretches were the most picturesque
Yes, give it another try.
Can't happen as long as freight trains run the tracks @@mrtriffid
That's a great attitude but a lot of people aren't aware of the realities of traveling on Amtrak. I think they should be more open and honest in a way where people do understand. My father takes Amtrak from NE Texas to Southern California and sometimes there's huge delays and sometimes none! lol Those freight trains are usually the problem.
@@mrtriffid Long distance trains can't be compared to local or intercity trains of 4-5 hours tops. People take these for a vacation, not to get somewhere on time.
That's a good place to get off my hometown Martinez
Love your positive attitude! Thanks for the honest review, and whoa $1634 for the both of you? 😮
The most realistic assessment of a trip I have ever seen
Except for the fits of anger off camera.
The worst part is the non-working dining car. I would not mind the delays if I can get extra meals out of it.
This video has disabused me of any notion that I wanted to travel by Amtrak.
So from watching alot of train videos it is always a good idea to bring alot of snacks and something to read
Yes, agreed. Healthy, hearty food packed as meals can be delayed by hours (4-6 +), according to the videos.
Just boils down to be prepared and plan ahead
You mean the ‘countries’ that are the size of states, if not smaller?
@@debbylou5729 What states do we have that have a great passenger rail system?
@@andybarr6751 none. Why would they? You clearly don’t understand the distances involved

We call it Mount Shasta, even though it’s the city, not precisely the mountain. It’s short for City of Mount Shasta. Helps avoid confusing it with Shasta Lake, Shasta county and Lake Shasta which are many miles south of us. Glad romance blossomed at the KOA.
I slept on the floor in the observation car.
Confront them and ask if they are aware of how this works.
Lounge Car hogging is a definite issue. It's why I tend to take in the views from my roomette or the dining car.
I just have to shake my head at people who make apologies for a national disgrace like this! 😖
36 hours is just too much for me either way. Consider I used to take train from tokyo to kyoto for 6 hours.
Yes I sleep in some of the long Journey trains in coach and it is very comfortable.
I would think the freight trains have priority over Amtrak. Maybe if Amtrak had it's own, well, track, it would be a different adventure :)
Almost went on that trip. You changed my mind. Thank you🎉
Can't believe that in 1987 my daughter and I took that train ride from L.A. to San Francisco. It was an credible journey. Long time ago so no problems with train. Views fantastic both mountains and ocean. Food good too. We just chose coach seats. No regrets. Aloha 🌺
Thank you for sharing and maintaining a smile! I say go on another train adventure, use the 20%, and plan for the worst!
I’m so sorry about the trip but love yalls positivity despite the circumstances!! 😅
Hey! @4:24 Las Posas Rd! That's my town of Camarillo! 😊

We took the sunset unlimited from alpine Texas to LA
It was great and we plan to take several more trips up the pacific coast when we retire next year god willing
I thought you executed your presentation very well👏👏👏💯💯
Give it another try....you might be pleasantly surprised
Years ago I was on the same trip and sitting in the cabin where they serve drinks, everything was going great until some dude got kind of drunk and started being really loud and extremely rude to women and he was pretty sketchy so people were a little bit scared of him. All of the sudden, in the middle of nowhere, the train came to a super abrupt stop and before we knew it there were policeman aboard. They came into the bar and grabbed the guy and took him off the train as we all cheered and clapped! It was super cool and the mood in the room turned back to relaxing and somebody bought a round of drinks for everyone. 😂
Give it another try. Chicago to Boston is beautiful. We look at all experiences as an adventure.
Have an open mind and make the best of it.
80% voucher would be more like it. Now you need to ride the Via in Canada to make it all better
Kathleen
Awesome, been there several times, better than riding the bus Thanks for sharing
I’ve done coach from California to Louisiana with 5 kids but we made sure we to the very front on both side so that there were no seats in front of us and it was twice the led room so that my youngest kids could spread out. Wasn’t bad because of the planning!
Josh and Amy❤️Love watching you both on trips together…this one was the Best.
Amtrak is way better than driving a car or the stress of flying. Amtrak is far from perfect but it's my preferred way to travel, hands down.
We loved this episode. We laughed and laughed. You guys took all the adversity in stride which allowed us to enjoy it. The only thing missing would be watching Pops try to get into the upper bunk. 😂
Not with his claustrophobia! This whole trip would have been a nightmare!
Very cool. I film Amtrak trains in Chatsworth, Simi Valley, and Moorpark. I have taken the Amtrak from Simi Valley to Oakland. It took nine hours. I enjoy filming them rather than riding them.
I cannot believe they didn't offer you another fully paid trip. What a shame. Thanks for the honest review.
So glad to see this. We have been talking about taking this trip, not so sure now.
❤❤❤ Honesty! That's all I ask for.
Appreciated your honest review of Coast Starlight. We’ve heard of others having a similar experience. Sad that it seems to be common rather than a one-off. But my husband and I applaud the positive spirit you both showed in dealing with all the disappointments/setbacks. 👍🏼
It's VERY common!!!
Traveling on Amtrak = "Well at least we have a good story now."

CHICAGO TO EMERYVILLE on the California Zephyr is my favorite!!! Thanks for all your videos❤❤❤❤
I didn't have a good experience on that train this past April 😪.
Long distance train travel in the US never goes as planned.
So glad I watched this. That is cray and not okay.

What a bummer! Thank you for the video. You've convinced me never to ride Amtrak.
Years ago I traveled from LA to North Carolina via AMTRAC and back and it was a wonderful experience! I would do it again except I would get the sleeper car.
