  • How to replace the distributor caps and rotors on a Mercedes M119 V8, this one is an r129 500sl.. very straightforward installation, almost idiot-proof as long as you replace the plug wires one at a time and keep track of where they go follow me on twitter / fupabox

    This is very informative and exactly what I needed to prepare myself for the same job on my 500E, which also has the M119 engine. Thank you for uploading this!

    From personal experience the only thing that I would've suggested in addition to this would be to also change the shield behind the rotor. It's made from the same plastic material as the outer cap and prevents arcing to the block... I had a miss that tracked back to one of the shield pieces on my right distributor, it had cracked and was allowing the rotor to arc straight through to the block causing a missfire...

    Hey man your channel is brilliant, all the repairs I could ever need!
    I have an R129 SL600 and the ADS is ruined, any advice? Should I replace them with normal coil overs and get rid of the hydraulic system?

    • @fupabox

      +Grattan d'Esterre Roberts that's what most people do..the stock ADS parts are ridiculously priced

    FYI, when you replace the rotor you must change the rotor bracket ( part #119-158-06-40) also or the new rotor will not seat correctly and/or will break!

    When changing the Caps and Rotors....do you need a new bracket? or is it only for the Bosch ones??
    I just ordered some caps and rotors ( Beru and Bremi) ,and could not find out if I needed a bracket.
    but if I look at the Bosch rotor for sale online, it says that I need a bracket!!?? I am confused.
    I am changing my caps and rotors due to a low idle ( first, I thought it was the throttle body, but apparently it is not) LOL
    Thanks in advance.

      I wish I could give you a straight answer on that.. the truth is ,I'm not sure since I've only used the Bosch

    my 95 has 109k stilk orginal caps rotors and wires can they run for a while?

    • @fupabox
      @fupabox  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      probably...if it runs well. Check and clean the caps and rotors with a bit of sandpaper to remove carbon tracing, and they should be fine. Look at the wires while the engine is running in the dark..if there is any leakage off the wire you can usually see it, especially if you touch the plug wire with a rubber handled screwdriver.. any leaking from a bad wire will arc over to the screwdriver..if the handle is rubber you won't get a spark zap in your hand :)

    I feel unworthy of such a helpful video. Does anyone replace the two o-rings? One as dust protection for the cap, and another, under where the rotor mounts.

  • @peterjones5391
    @peterjones5391 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    or at least renew the O ring seal between the sheld and the cap... because the old one is always worn and allows moisture in the cap, causing misfire and arcing, which quickly wears out the new (and very expensive) cap and rotor... ;-)
