And his vocal delivery, as well! He makes it look so easy the way he picks those strings with his right hand. It sounds like he plays all of those notes with a single pick, and without a mistake. ❤
Yeah, I lived in Edinburgh for a year as a student and the lyrics to this song just evoke a tapestry of very vivid sights of the city, particularly on a cold, foggy winter's night. He's captured the atmosphere so well.

Such an unassuming and humble man.. No thrills or spills, no drama or theatrics, just a top class musician and perhaps one of the very best guitar players ever.. Certainly one of very few who we can recognise just by hearing the guitar
He is like David Gilmour in that way. Very different styles, but you don’t have to be told who they are when you hear them playing.
The man is a total LEGEND, he does't need to try, it just oozes naturally from him, LOVE YOU❤

Around 2:30 he takes a bit of time to acknowledge the playing of the other guys on stage, gives a nod and a smile to the violinist who’s face lights up. Mark has done this all through his career, he has always shown appreciation and respect to the people who play alongside him, despite his talent he never made it all about him. A class act and a gent.

Mark has a way of making everyone play to their highest level. They have smiles and grins because they know they played spectacularly! He glances at the players to show approval. Just a great sound no lights or fireworks for him ,he don’t need them.His music will last forever.

Mark knopfler imo is the most underrated guitarist /songwriter ever. He's written hits for some of the biggest stars and his guitar style has a beautifully emotive and melodic flavour unlike anyone else. After all these years he still often references his homeland in his songs, which adds to his authentic and earthy tone. One of the greatest of all time for sure.

I maybe wrong but Brothers in arm was the first commercial cd.
And that's why Phillips spent lot of money to promote this album.
And as far I remember the two last Dire Straits tour were Big promoting tour.
And during the last MK & Bob Dylan Tour, MK brougth to Dylan 'his' public (At least in France)
I fully agree that MK is greatest ans probable an admirable man.
But he was not underrated ans Dire Strait was Big Music Machine as Pink Floyd for instance.
@@trucbidule3939 All long after Knopfler had proven "doing it his way" would make them money- he didn't work with producers that tried to tell him "what his sound should be". MK has been performing at this level for several decades- he was always fantastic, never formulaic. I don't have a large disagreement with you- but Phillips was never as bad as several of the labels- and MK was established. As the saying goes, don't mess with it, if it aint broke!

As a teenager, I watched these Parkinson clips on repeat for the whole Australian summer of 2006, just wishing for a red Strat for Christmas! Lovely to see them in better quality.

In an interview some 38 or so years ago Joe Walsh said" Don't be in such a hurry..... no-one makes it overnight, and God help you if you do, because you go down just as quick." Mr Knopfler is the embodiment of this. One of the few reasons to be proud to be British.

I’ve been a massive fan ever since my mate played me the first Dire Straits album in ‘78. Saw them in ‘79 in the Birmingham Odeon and have all of their albums and most of Mark’s solo work. A superb performance here from a great artist with a unique and unmistakable sound.

Huh? Last year he played in Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lyon, Strasbourg, Paris, and Nimes. He tours all over Europe, and I can guarantee he plays within 2 hours of your home. What do you mean ‘no chance’ because you live in France?

I literally remember the first time i heard Dire Straits on the radio. I was with a renown jazz guitarist from NYC and we both shut up and listened all the way through, mesmerised.

Happy memories of two great Mark Knopfler gigs at Manchester Arena. Obviously I love his Dire Straits music, Brothers in Arms is as perfect an album as can be. But I also love how he gas embraced more folk and roots music in his solo career. And his duets with James Taylor are pure magic.
