    The show is actually about young people that already left the community. They play up the Amish as a gimmick, but this is basically Jersey Shore.

    They've already left the Amish community. My brother lives near some Amish in Kentucky and they don't act anything like that. Shy, quiet people who keep to themselves. About the only interaction they have with the "English" (as they call everyone who isn't Amish) is selling them fresh produce, baked goods and jam at roadside stands.

    Would like to add that a lot of abuse against women happens in Amish communities. Generally, their women are treated like shit. They also have pretty harsh punishments when someone goes "off course" from the rules and beliefs. It can go as far as banishing the person from the community and their family

    • @theiran
      @theiran 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The men pick up a trade. Single women are discouraged from trying to take up a trade, as it is frowned upon. In Amish communities, women are 2nd class citizens who are meant to marry young, cook, clean, and have babies.

      Since when is "Barbie" or Barbara a amish name?

      Anyway, TLC is such a trustworthy channel ;-)

    • @houseofaction
      @houseofaction 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      KingWak first of all its actually called Pennsylvania German and second off all if you actually watched the above video you can hear them speaking in it. also Barbara is actually commonly used by the Amish.

    • @RvEijndhoven
      @RvEijndhoven 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bit late, but yes they certainly are actors. Modern Amish might not have the heavy Pennsylvania Dutch/German accents that the older generations have, but they certainly do not have the Northern Californian accents these people display either.

    • @houseofaction
      @houseofaction 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Robbert van Eijndhoven everyone of the people on this show are former members of the Amish community this is an irrefutable fact. they simply had already left. i have met former members of the community and unless speaking in Pennsylvania German they have normal accidents

    Ok, I've never watched Breaking Amish. As someone who comes from a family of what is sometimes termed as "jerked over" Amish (my great grandparents left the community and were excommunicated and shunned), I can only guess these are Amish who have left the community and have (possibly) been shunned, decided not to be baptised after Rumschpringe (literally means running around. It's when Amish teens are allowed to experience outside things if they wish to before being baptised. Usually begins around 16), or they may be actors portraying "Amish". I've lived among Amish my whole life (in Elkhart and LaGrange counties in Indiana) and I've never seen Amish like them. Yes, some have cell phones now (You haven't seen funny until you've seen an Amish man in his buggy texting, not once looking up, while the horse trots along), and anyone raised around Amish will most likely know what an Amish phone booth is, some work outside of their farms and homes and then go home and work even more. Sometimes they do not choose baptism after experiencing Rumschpringe, and this is accepted in some Amish communities and they aren't shunned. They go out and have fun just like everyone else, I'm sure some may even drink, smoke, cheat, they are human after all. They are also very social. There are Old Order and New Order Amish and the differences are notable. I'm sure there are some that behave this way. It wouldn't be something that's common in my opinion and also from what I know, who I know and what I see. I wouldn't trade the sound of the clip clopping of a horse coming down my road for anything though 😸

    Some of the best weed I've ever smoked was grown by an Amish couple in Missouri (before moving back home to CO, obviously :) They also owned this little shop on the side of the road where you could by a bag full of just the marshmallows that are in Lucky Charms. Some of the young adults going through Rumsprina would by "rave drugs" (that's what they called X, crystal, and coke) from a "guy I knew." The girls really like us "English boys", and became really friendly. Many of the girls, would shave everything below the neck.. everything (But every so often you'd come across a "bush-er", that is a girl would didn't shave anything below her neck.) I loved Rumspringa..
    In a big city, I'd consider myself a 5 or 6, in a small town like the one I lived, I would say I was an 8.. but to a girl during Rumspringa, I felt like I was a 10. We called it an "R rating" or "R number", basically you get 3 points over what your looks usually are. Not to sound like a jerk, but they had no problem with you not contacting them after either; mainly because if they did have a home phone, they didn't want the English calling, or once they were done with Rumspringa, they went back to being regular Amish. Another weird thing, the guys really liked fruity cocktails and wine coolers..

    • @VampireWillowRain
      @VampireWillowRain 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joja Lee learn what rumspringa is please- just because one is on rumspringa, doesnt mean they have left the community or their ways- only when they make the final decision of returning to the community or to the church can it be said if leaving said community and church that they are no longer apart of the amish community- also keep in mind that once they have made the final decision- they can never return- like a form of banishment, meaning family, friends, neighbors, loved ones- if you choose english life- u leave behind all else- thus why some decide to spend years away while on rumspringa- so they understand what they are choosing and what they are going to give up for it

    • @AstraSystem
      @AstraSystem 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +VampireWillowRain There is actually quite a bit of controversy about just how staged the show was. This article gives a decent overview: www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/24/is-breaking-amish-fake-tlc_n_1909476.html
      This is a more detailed write-up with additional sources: jezebel.com/5949245/arrests-divorces-and-secret-children-breaking-amish-is-nothing-but-lies
      Google will turn up a lot of well-researched results if you search for "Breaking Amish Fake" or something similar.
      TLC was basically just exploiting Amish culture to get ratings (and the shows WERE really entertaining- I liked Amish Mafia, tbh- that was also faked)

      No, rumspringa is a small period of time when Amish teens can experience the outside or English (as they call it) world. They either return to being Amish or leave the community forever. And yes it's German, they're descended from German immigrants.

    • @TheCsel
      @TheCsel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pazuzu amish speak a dialect of old-german, rumspringa is the term they mean for when the teenagers go running around in the world doing crazy stuff, before settling down and officially joining the amish church. the parents frown upon it, but want them to get it out of their system i guess.

    The Mister with grey hair reminds me of Lestrade from the Sherlock Holmes BBC series... really handsome :) Does someone else perhaps think the same?

    Fake AF. No, not even rumspringa. I come from a Mennonite family- I know the real thing. It you're interested in real Amish and how they interact with the community around them, there's lots of good documentaries. But this is bad even for a reality show.
