Recreate an STL file in Fusion 360

  • Someone wanted to make changes to this STL, and was wondering if I could do it. Sometimes you can convert STLs in Fusion360 easily and edit them. However, that doesn't always work, as in the case of this file. In this video I'm giving you a glimpse on how I approach this task. This is a one-take, unscripted video, so sorry for how unorganized and scatter brained it is. Hopefully you can pick up some helpful tips though!

Perfect timing for this. You covered a few areas I been wondered how you do in Fusion. Thanks!

When you try to measure the thickness, you can use the measure tool, and in the Results section you can click on the XYZ delta part and it'll give you the distance along your X,Y, and Z, For the thickness of the base that's just the Z, and for the thickness of the walls you can do sqrt(x^2+y^2) .

Can you do that to the mesh, even though you can’t select any surfaces or edges?

    • @Grazfather
      @Grazfather 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ShopTherapy623 you can select the edges on the mesh with the measure tool, and as long as the surfaces match your coordinate plane then the x y z values will line up.

At time mark 22:00, you can loft the inner ring to the outer ring (at both end), then select everything and hit stitch. now you have a solid body. Loft and Ruled are my most common used surface tools. Ruled, with trim (instead of loft) would work also, although its an extra step in this case.

Could you have used the shell command to hollow out the hood? Anyway some great info here. I'm subscribed.

I think maybe yet! You could have made the solid base (not hollowed out) and the solid hood, and then maybe joined them and shelled them. That potentially would have worked. And then do all the base holes and stuff afterwards. Thats the nice thing about Fusion - there's always a bunch of different ways to do it!

Just a thought, if you extrude to a new component, then when your testing one will be transparent so you may get a more accurate look, you could also try changing the appearance off-cause.

Im not sure I'm following this comment. Do you mean when I was trying to extrude the hood down to the base/bowl?

Thanks for being kind. Lol. The audio is pretty bad and I’m a bit scatter brained. However this wasn’t rehearsed, and I did it in one take!

I think it was fine for an unplanned video. I think some people may find it helpful to see the thought process behind what you are doing rather than just showing people the correct tool every time.
Its also good for people to realise you might not always get it right the first time.
I enjoyed it either way. I would not have thought to use the surface tool.

Regarding the beval at the end, You needed to do the inside to 50 first then do the outside to 50.

Yes!! I realized that after the fact! Thanks for pointing that out! There are a few things I'd do differently now that the video is over! lol

Yup. Yet another way they make things difficult for someone who is just trying to modify an existing model they found.

th-cam.com/video/lhL48dcOodM/w-d-xo.html need to do the inside fillet first and then the external fillet in order to achieve the correct 50mm filet you were after.

Yes! I figured that out after the video! That’s one of the problems with doing an unplanned video!

@@ShopTherapy623 Thanks for sharing regardless. I like watching fusion projects and thinking about how I would do things differently. Fun little brain challenge.

Thanks for the feedback! I just recorded this with my laptop microphone. If I continue to do more "how-to" videos, I will think about getting some better audio!
