The repair is inexpensive, but is time consuming. Replacing is faster and in my case was the only worthwhile way to go since there were several problems that all came from an unbalanced torsion springs. Whichever way you go, hopefully this video will help you make a good decision.

Exactly what I needed! My kids managed to open the garage door while our van hatch was opened and the door got caught on the hatch, breaking the chain drive gear right off. Thank you for posting exactly what I needed. I just finished installing a new one I got off of Amazon.

My rarely used Chamberlain opener sent the token black plastic part to the floor, so I used the rope to shut the door. I called a repairman, sent pics of the piece and he wants $595 to,put a new opener in. Can the opener be fixed (by someone else) just putting a new plastic part (sprocket?) and checking? I should not need a new opener as little as it has been used. 6-7 years old used less than 3 times a month .

This exact problem just happened to me. The garage door was halfway open/closed, and the chain slipped off the sprocket. The chain was very slack, so I loosened the nuts enough to get the chain back on the sprocket, then tightened the nuts up enough tried to adjust the tension. As soo as I activated it, the sprocket broke. It's old enough I should just replace the whole darn thing. But damn, I don't have money just lying around.

*four* turns? Something is way off if it took that. A door should also be balanced close to the bottom and close to the top. You can balance most any spring in the middle, but if the spring is either too weak or too strong, then it will be out of balance at the top and bottom. Springs will lose some strength, that's why most installers set them a little "hot" when they are new, but if they are oil tempered springs, they should maintain their spring rate until they break.
The problem with new openers is they tend to lose their settings if power is interrupted because they are all electronics based. They are cheaper to make that way. For those who like buying batteries every few years, there is always the battery backup ones, tho.
About the the only good thing I can say is, apparently, that belt one you got should save you some work as belt ones, from what some pros say, don't have gear failures because the belt absorbs a lot of the vibrations instead to passed the stress onto the gears.
Of course, if you really want low maintenance, you'll find a V belt version from the 1970's, those basically never break. Just don't try outrunning the door, cuz you'll break before the opener does, lol.

how did you remove the black plastic ontop that the chain travels on

IIRC, that chain spreader is just screwed down. If you look up garage door opener install vids, some of them show that piece being installed.
