    I went through this with my Chamberlain opener recently and came out of the experience with one tip: Liftmaster provides excellent instructions with their part, and it's worth the time to follow their instructions. Two of the tips you mention - lubricating the gear, dealing with travel limits - are addressed in there. Their procedure takes care of travel limits with less work than any alternative routine presented by other random youtube DIY videos, some of which can actually screw things up pretty badly.
    Also, the instructions serve as a checklist (they even tell you to check off steps as you do them) which prevents missing steps. In my haste, likely with some contributing distraction, I'd forgotten to tighten the mounting nuts for the motor before reassembling, and only discovered this from the loud buzzing sound after getting everything together. If I'd slowed down to check the instructions along the way, I'd have saved the trouble of taking things apart again to get access to those nuts to tighten them properly.
    Install-time tips aside, there's also a matter of getting the actual parts to use. It may be tempting to shop around on eBay or Amazon for the best price, but there are countless third-party parts out there. Some may be as good as genuine, but I imagine it's just as likely some are of poor quality that will work fine when first installed but not last 30 years like my original gear did. It took a fair bit of time shopping around to find a listing I was sure was genuine. It turns out that ordering direct from Liftmaster, prices aren't that much more than from Amazon or eBay, and in retrospect, given the time, I'd rather just spend those few extra bucks to avoid either gambling with aftermarket parts, or sifting through all the listings to figure who's not aftermarket.

    Thank you for your great videos! I screwed up! I did the level/balance test (was great) followed by adjusting my chain on my LiftMaster Pro 3265 1/2HP due to too much slack. After doing so, my door opened and closed great with the exception of the door automatically re-opening when it touched the floor. I adjusted the Down Limiter clockwise in 3/4 turn increments and tested. Without success, and after doing about three of these increments, my sprocket snapped off. I must have turned it too much forcing the door down too far. I ordered a gear and sprocket kit after removing the motor covers, everything else looks good. Since the adjustment was in all liklihood the problem, I will definitely do a run test "without" the door attached first due to messing around with the down limiter. My only concern at this point is to have the down limiter screw at a good starting point. I've been trying to find out if/where the factory sets them initially but, no success. Thankfully, I didn't touch the other limiters. Lesson learned..... I will do much smaller increments. Thanks again for your video, appreciate it. 👍😊

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello! I'm so glad this video was helpful. There are a number of ways you could set the limits but to know how the factory sets them is still a mystery to me. I personally like to make the adjustments from the close position. And as long I know that it's in the close or down position then I can make minor adjustments for the opening. It takes a little time a patience but in the end it will make for better operating experience. Thank you for the feedback!

I recently changed the gear / sproc .. my issue is the trolley keeps on going all the way in its down travel , even if I regulate via the dials that adjust the Down/Up Travel ... as a metter of fact the trolley goes all the way down that the rails make a cranking noise and bend up ... but gets compensated in its UP travel ..

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the feedback. So it's quite possible that the contacts to the actual open and closed travel limits are bad. There's also a possibility that you might have an issue with your board, the logic board to the garage door opener motor. Another thing you can check is the balance to your garage door. If your garage door has heavy balance that might be pulling on the travel. Either way if you have a failure to the contacts and it's moving too far forward you might need to start planning for a new garage door opener motor.

      Hello! Thank you for the excellent questions.
      So it sounds like your travel limits are off. Here's what I suggest:
      1. Loosen the chain and take off the sprocket.
      2. Press the wall button to get the garage door to close.
      3. As the garage door opener internally start to travel down (the door should not be moving), have a family member or friend block one of the safety sensors.
      4. The garage door opener should internally operate back up, blinking or clicking once it's done. This indicator means the travel limit is in the up position.
      5. Run the opener once more, this time do not block the safety sensors. The travel limit should be in a down position.
      6. Unplug the opener, reattach chain onto sprocket, and tighten chain to proper tension.
      7. Power the opener and operate the garage door motor one cycle up and one cycle down.
      8. Adjust travel limits when necessary.
      Hope this helps!

Finally, it was down humming when suddenly a loud grinding noise came from motor, so I yanked the cord. The sprocket was chewed up. I'm waiting on a new sprocket, and I ordered a new logic board thinking it was messed up from the lightning and that's why it kept driving it downward no matter what I did. Wish me luck! Ha Ha!

When I tried to close it, the trolley moved about 8 inches towards the closed position, then returned to the open position. The sensors at the bottom of the door are properly aligned and the lights are bright green. The down and force travel adjustment screws do not change anything. Everything looks to be lined up as it should.

      One way you can alleviate that situation is by shortening the angle of the J Arm or arm that connects the motor to the door. If you are able to adjust that arm by closing in the distance of the angle making it look like a true "J" shape then you should be good. You might need to make an additional adjustment to the travel distance but otherwise it should not hit the bolt above. Hope this helps.

But that overall cost, ($135 x 4) might better used on a new motor with updated features. As for the logic board I almost always recommend a motor replacement for a 20+ year old motor. Once a logic board goes bad it's 50/50 whether the new board will hold up. I hope this helps Jim. I truly appreciate your support!

I would have to press it a few times for it to open fully. Eventually, it completely seized up and the garage door wouldn't move an inch in any direction. Why cannot we move the door unless we pull the emergency cord,do the motor has brake or solinoid to prevent movement

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your question. I am having a hard time understanding it completely
      What are you trying to accomplish?
      Have you pulled on the Red emergency cord to lift your door?
      Are you trying to disengage the opener?

    The metal bearing or bushing? that my drive shaft goes through just above the travel limit gears is worn out-its inner diameter is too big resulting in the travel limit gears not staying engaged. The bearing is stuck, any tips on removing it? Thank You!

      I just replaced that bushing at the top because it was busted and was making a crunching sound every time i opened the door. When it breaks again, I will do some measurements on the shaft and see if I can find a bearing to weld onto the metal mount and not have to worry about it again.
      Also one thing he forgot to mention when lubricating the gears, is to also lube those metal bushings on the shaft as well. The replacement set I got didn't come pre-lubricated and metal on metal friction will wear that bushing out even faster. If you don't want to take it apart, just use some lithium grease spray on them, same thing you would use on the roller shafts on the door.

    If the gear is sheared off, that's a good indicator something's wrong. 😁

    so if my garage door only travels 6" one way then automatically travels back 6" the other way, what is causing this effect?

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello! If you have replaced the gear trolley carriage then the issue you have described might be with the travel module or travel limits. If you have the ability to adjust the travel by hand you want to make sure the trolley carriage is at the close position so that you can adjust the up travel first. Keep in mind that your start position will determine how far your door opens and closes. Hope this helps.

      @@sosgds so neither of this come into play (no travel module but yes to the limits dials) I can see the disks turning away from the end of the limits and then it just reverses regardless of where the door starts and even if it the trolley is connected or not
      Is the chain to tight maybe and the sensor is picking up excessive force?

    Does anyone make these with a ball bearing, rather than a sleeve bearing, at the upper shaft? I wouldn't have to fix these simple items that wont live anywhere close to the life of mine or of the house. Yes, I know a small ball bearing would have added an additional ten dollars, but like so many things are ending into the dumps across the country are a shame! DC

      Hello. Great question, what's more I think it's even a greater suggestion. But unfortunately it is like you say, money motivates all business decisions. We will have to see if someone answers the call and makes ball bearing version. Thanks for the feedback.

    The nylon gear "usually goes wrong" because it IS SUPPOSED TO GO WRONG which is why they
    make ti out of soft nylon instead of metal!
    It will always wear out making the customer have to purchase a new gear assembly!

      I've taken out some old Craftsman openers made by Chamberlain that had a metal gear. The ones they make now are shit. DC motor and no sprocket gear assy like the old ones. KEEP YOUR OLD OPENERS. New ones are WEAK.
