Farming is a different life. My roommate in College family farmed here in Michigan. Neighbors are far away and going to a store could be an entire day. A few years after College, I went back and stayed with has family for a short vacation. I am an expert with computers and they bought there first farm management computer with a dialup modem. Yes, I just dated myself. I was happy to setup there computer, connect up the modem, load all software and setup backup. Before I knew it I was in the family pickup with his mom driving me to neighbor farms setting up and teaching how to use the computers. Met wonderful families too. My farm mom would call me when I needed to visit again. I loved those visits.

Man I cant wait to hit the reset button. Let’s hope that the coming year isn’t like this year. I’m not sure how many farms can take another year like this. Sure seemed like it never let up. In my area there are ranchers selling cow because they could not get hay put up due to the amount of rain we got. Hay meadows are still standing water. Let’s hope things change in 2020!!

I know this sounds stupid and forgive me if I offend anyone but could the farmers grow rice in any of these flooded areas?

Hi Susan, not offensive at all! Glad you asked! There are several reasons why this isn't really an option. In this area there are no places to take rice and sell it (since historically it hasn't been grown). Farmers in this area also don't have the right kind of equipment (equipment they have is specialized for the crops they routinely grow). Finally, in this area the water didn't stay on the fields long and there is no irrigation system in place, so even if rice was planted, the rest of the growing season would not be favorable. There are areas close by where the water is still on the fields and has been pretty much continuously since March. In these places they never had a chance to plant anything- doesn't matter what crop.
