this game holds up better than Lord of the Rings: Gollum 2023
You mean "Lord of Ring: Gollum"
no i do not@@J__T
@@quackduck1510 It's what the developers called their own game in their apology letter that they later admitted to not knowing the company officially sent out. Tuly fascinating in scope and execution.
@@J__T still, i know what i wrote and i did it on purpose
@@quackduck1510 I'm not saying you didn't?
This cartoonish style fits surprising well with The Lord of The Rings universe
I'd say it fits The Hobbit more appropriately since Tolkien originally wrote it as a children's book to read to his kids
Totally worth it
The original hobbit movie had art style like this
Its based on old cartoon...
Probably wouldn't work as well with LotR, but The Hobbit is a kids story, so it makes sense. This is why Peter Jackson's Hobbit franchise didn't do as well. It was both more serious (like LotR) and more whimsical and the same time, creating a weird tonal dissonance for the audience.
My favorite thing about this game is how openly angry Bilbo is when the dwarves send him to get something like...firewood. And he just has to fight and platform for his life by himself, so when he makes it back several hours later and he's just like "AND I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON IT" and that is so relatable.
“CONFUSTICATE THOSE DWARVES !!”
In 2003, i was in grade 7, and the hobbit was a required reading for English class. we had to read it for book reports. i asked my teacher if i could play the game instead and he, in all his majesty, said yes. he altered for the format of my assignment and made me do a plot/level design report speaking about what actions i needed to complete the level and the aesthetics of the game as well as how it presented the plot. got b on the whole assignment
What a great teacher!
Must have had this game that’s amazing
I would totally watch a live-action remake of the Hobbit with exactly this plot, the game is so good that i didn't even realize that the weird guys with firewood were supposed to be Thorin and his friends until the second half of the video :D
To be fair, the movies got the spirit of the Rube Goldberg machine during the barrel scene
I long for the day I can watch the masterpiece "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Group Of Unhelpful Weird Guys"
@@therealcyanman I think that's a much better title for the actual book, I remember them being useless the whole time in that too lol
Bilbo's drowning animation traumatized me as a kid lol
Same. Just the struggle then closing his eyes as his jaw goes slack.
Same😂
Oh my gosh, this gave me the biggest nostalgia wave of my life! I used to play this game all the time. Maybe it's just my childhood speaking, but in my opinion, this is still the best Middle Earth game!
Yeah the nostalgia this brought out was intense, played it to death years ago. This game was awesome
I agree. It's the best... (though I suppose I could be biased as well.... 🤣)
@@therealcyanman I have an 18 year age gap with my younger siblings, they're finally old enough to play this game and it actually is still so much fun even as an adult, I'm so happy to be sharing it with them :)
This game is actually what introduced me to LOTR it'll always have a special place in my heart.
I have memory of this place.
That’s strange considering all the head trauma that Bilbo received throughout this game
ptsd sticks with you man@@jordanhansen5934
This game has a weird charm to it. It's in that odd era of LOTR games where the movies weren't out yet or at least weren't the focus point of the games just yet, & most of the games were based on the actual book series
Bless Rankin Bass for the art design here.
@@DippKlippGuy ah is that who did it? Makes sense why I'm attracted to it aestheticly, love Rankin Bass
@@DippKlippGuy No, this is nothing like Rankin/Bass (& Topcraft)'s Hobbit from 1977
This game is strongly based on the 1977 animated movie.
Kinda sad that after the movies we can never get another game in this glorious art style
I think the the reason being this game sold below Sieara Entertainment/Vivendi Universal expectations shame really, I think Inevitable Entertainment could of done wonders with the LOTR novels as video game adaptations.
This game itself came out after the movies though didn’t it?
@@Airehcaz It did yes, though I believe it began development in late 2001.
This was the first “real video game” I ever played as a kid. I just recently played through it again for the first time in probably over 15 years, and I really enjoyed it! I was not disappointed.
Love this game so much.
- The art-style and colorful vibrant graphics. Perfectly captures 'children's adventure story' vibe.
- Great variety of locations with just as much variety in tasks.
- Nice and simple progression system(s), combat, puzzle boxes, etc. I much prefer "simple gameplay with complex combination or mechanics to test them" style of games.
It's really quite strange that despite turning Bilbo Baggins into Rambo Baggins, this game managed to capture the feeling of adventure better than a multi-million dollar film trilogy. Screw that bottle puzzle though.
Oh god I know. It would have been fine if the clues mentioned to switch the red and blue bottles. I had to retry this puzzle so many times because of this error that I can still remember how the clues went 20 years later!
Not really? The trilogy is great.
it was the barrel puzzle that did me , took weeks
@@bobmathews9072 Oh god, I remember that one. So many failed attempts, and the walk cycle was sooooo sloooooow.
Dude all the voices you can do for the LOTR series is amazing. The jokes and edits you are able to pull off are very entertaining lol
I miss when 3-D videogames had a cartoony art-style, now everything is hyperrealistic or sometimes an artsy cell-shading if you're lucky
1. Despite beating this game over a dozen times as a kid, I never remembered the awesome “Hello there!” line by Gandalf until today.
2. The Hobbit movies would have been far better if they’d followed this game’s script
3. Was I the only one whose game crashed a lot, especially upon completing quests and ESPECIALLY during the mine level where you find the Ring at the end?
4. I’m glad I’m not the only one who was irritated by the dwarves’ complete inability to do anything themselves. “Hey, thanks for saving all our lives for the 7th time. Do you mind going on a fetch quest for me?”
5. Gandalf appearing in a flash of lightning between the armies of men, elves, and dwarves to warn them about the approaching goblins was the most badass thing ever.
6. 21:20 I love the idea that the first thing Beorn does when he finally gets ahold of Bolg is, rather than tearing him apart with his giant bear claws and teeth, he instead give him the world's most epic b*tch-slap
Maybe they should have made the dwarves playable characters
God, I love this game. I still play it, start to finish, on my GameCube from time to time.
By the way, I think the little guy, the one Bilbo is bowing to, from that storybook cutscene with Elrond, is Aragorn. He was ten during the time of the Hobbit, and was living in Rivendell at the time. Or so I think.
The trolls break me, one glimpse of Bilbo and you're done
Loved this game! And it was pretty close to the actual plot. Enough to further motivate me to read the book as a kid
So many memories of this game. I have been a Tolkien fan since childhood watching the Rankin&Bass animated hobbit movie on repeat and playing this game way too much
I'm not gonna lie... watching this drunk, at 1AM in the morning while waxing and waning between consciousness makes for the perfect fever dream recipe. Just lettng you know, I found this thoroughly entertaining and I'm also setting this as a reminder to rewatch this later.
Good man
I know what you mean
The video’s sheer love for the Hobbit in all mediums, book, game, and movies, makes me really happy. Absolutely love all the movie references and especially the imitations! Uncanny!
Played this game loads when I was a kid. I used to spend hours just smacking goblins at the battle of 5 armies where they infinitely respawn. It was super fun
i forgot how absolutely unhinged this game was, I have vivid memories of getting caught in the maze in the shire because I was shit at games as a kid (still am) but I don't remember ever actually finishing the game. This was definitely a ride to watch, especially working a night shift while existing on too much caffeine. But thank you for the journey back to my childhood (there and back again, but its me with this stupid game I love so much) I will be subscribing
A late friend of mine adored this game. This vid was a such a nice reminder of my pal, it's been so long since I've seen someone bring it up. Thanks for this!
I love this game so much. I used to play it for hours on end in our basement when it first came out. I loved the music, especially the title screen music. This game is a nostalgia trip for me. Now I have to go dig out my copy!
Cyan has blessed us with another masterpiece of a video. I swear your videos are getting better and better with each one.
Thank you for covering this video game! It’s one of my favorite video games of all time, and I love coming back to it every so often to play it on the weekend. I love it when TH-camrs cover it from time to time, it reminds me of how life used to be. 😁
This game is better than i remember for the fact that this is older than me its awesome
Dude, right when I’m getting a hankering for this childhood masterpiece the Cyan beats me to it! 👏
I have such nostalgia for this game. Thank you for reliving this nightmare so I don't have to.
I discovered about The Hobbit not from the movies or the book, but from this game. Classic
Thank you for making this video! This was one of my favorites back in the day, and still is one of favorites. Blast from the past, no doubt
Your best video, yet. Perfect balance between story telling and gameplay commentary.
Remember it? I still play this game and my hatred for mirkwood is still strong
I know a lot of people hate this game, but as a kid it was funking awesome.
Honestly i've heard good things about this game, It can be difficult at times but i've only heard good things about it.
There wasn't that many Zelda like games released on non Nintendo platforms so seeing one that was this polished is impressive
this game has a pretty sick speedrunning history and a video dedicated to it blew up not suuuuper long ago
My dad got this game for us when it came out. my Brother and I thought it was so cool to kill things with rocks. Dang this brings back memories.
I loved this game as a kid and it holds up very well.
The Hobbit 2003 was the first game I every went out of may to 100% every level. Collecting every coin and courage Cristal, finding every chest and completing every quest.
All these years later now I’ve gotten 100% in Elden Ring and the Souls games. I guess you could say The Hobbit 2003 is the Dark Souls of LotR games.
I played this game constantly when I got it. One of my favorites on the GameCube.
This game was up there with third age and return of the king. 10/10
I think about this game quite a bit, engrained in my brain for my childhood. The soundtrack, the gameplay- all pure nostalgia!
Dude!!! I was OBSESSED with this game back in the day!! 😊 LOLOL thanks for bringing back great memories! Still my favorite Tolkien-inspired game!
Love this game. I remember being so you and having a stroke trying that bottle puzzle. I listened to what he was saying so many times and writing it down cause I was young and couldn’t figure it out. “Yellow sits next to red and blue which is not next to black…”
Man, I adored this game growing up. Almost always had it in my GameCube after asking for it for Christmas. The music, the exploration and the way it followed the book in so many ways. For me, it still holds up. Jumping mechanics still frustrating though lol
Great video! I actually forgot about this game! My cousins and I played this when it came out. We actually enjoyed it! It was a simple, fun action game. The only thing is that I wished you could replay levels in case you missed something without having to start a new save file.
I'm actually now a bit tempted to revisit this game again. 😅
Loved playing this game as a kid! I play it about once a year now for the nostalgia. A child-like sense of wonder and excitement to be sure! The game was very well done for the time, minus that screen control 😂 But the gameplay really immersed you into the world of Middle Earth. The puzzles were so much fun And the music/score!!! Phenomenal! To see others share similar experiences brings me joy!
The crazy thing is, I just finished reading the hobbit book for the first time in my life today after being a fan of the movies for my entire life. I remember playing this game more than 15 years ago, and it randomly popped up in my memory, so I decided to look up a TH-cam video and came across this one. Great work this video is hilarious.
This was my introduction to The Hobbit as a kid. So many great memories and such a fun game. I’d love to see it remastered for modern consoles.
Only came out 2 years after I was born, had it for ages but only properly played it when I was around 10. So much nostalgia. Really got you into the hobbit.
Played this is a kid. I'm pretty sure that whirlpool is the reason I'm afraid of water
This game has a special place in my heart, it was my introduction to Tolkien.
Yes! I played this game all the time as a kid! Thank you for covering it.
My grandpa got me this game when I was 9 years old, i tried to get it to run on my family desktop, but we didnt have any graphics card. i used to look at the box a lot and wonder what the game was like. thanks for posting this, now i get to finally enjoy a gift from 21 years ago lol
Your video style reminds me of the glory days of youtube. Absolutely hilarious!
I played this game before reading the books or watching the movies. Still got it.
Great game, if I can find it, I’d get it, hands down.
No replay value but long and pretty difficult. More accurate then the damn movies.
Oh! I had this when I was a little kid, literally before I even learned to read. As such, I never really made it very far, I guess I just liked running around, but I remember watching my older brothers play it.
Such a blessing coming across this channel when I was just starting to get extremely bored of everything on my feed.
This is the most of the Hobbit trilogy I've seen since the theaters
I LOVED this game as a kid and it's super nostalgic for me. I'm so happy that someone on TH-cam is finally talking about it, and your jokes were hilarious!
This was legit my first exposure to anything Tolkien
I rented it from a friend, I remember it had fantastic atmosphere. Amazing video! Thanks for making this!
I got this for Christmas 2003, I was enthralled with it! I had a blast playing it at the time, and I loved the soundtrack. Good times...
This was my absolute favorite game as a kid. So much fun to watch you replay it.
your impressions went from amusing to downright impressive tbh
Me and one of my childhood buddies played this game to death on his old pc in his garage. It has a special place in my heart for all of eternity. I e gone back and played it 2 or 3 times since then and its just as good as i remember it!
Good game, an old childhood favorite
The stone giants part is probably my favorite part of this vid lmao 🤣 love it dude
This was a very entertaining video, I enjoyed it a lot! Subscribed!
This game introduced me to the universe of Tolkien, my brother and I both loved playing it and it still holds up to this day.
this game was one of the first games I played growing up, and my whole family fell in love with it and they still talk about it to this day
my brother and i got this for christmas one year then played it every year in december for like six years in a row. my favorite levels were the laketown level and the gathering of the clouds... i loved the puzzles and exploration!!
I loved this game as a kid and it was one of the few that I finished. Thanks for the trip down nostalgia lane!
Bro no. I literally just started playing this again a few days ago. On hard mode. No save card lol. It's super fun
You could try getting into the sppedrunning community!
You have the most calming voice it is crazy. Love the videos keep up the good work.
This is my favourite lord of the rings game unironically
This game was so OG i remember dying endlessly to the spiders as a kid
Yes. This was my #1 childhood game and taught me who Bilbo was and how he found the one ring. The gameplay and the fighting style was a 10/10 in my book for a game of it’s time and I still have it on my shelf for another play through.
I am so happy than now more people starts talking about this game! It was my first one and still I consider is as one of the best gameplays, level designs and soundtrack💪
This game was the first rpg that I've ever played when I was a kid and it clicked so well I still think about it every day
Finally someone talks about this game
NGL my favorite thought whenever I hear that "I am fire, I am death" line is the idea of there being a Godzilla roar where a subtitle pops up reading, "that's cute," as the Smaug vs Godzilla deathmatch begins.
Wow 🤩 ! This game is part of my childhood! Man nostalgia is hitting me like a truck right now. I played this game like crazy years ago. Actually I still play it on my laptop 💻. It works well and plus I was able to buy a brand new Hobbit PC disk for a low price.
Nice! I absolutely adored this game as a kid. When I played it years ago I had to continuously rent it from my local library of all things cause that's the only way I knew how to get a hold of it. I'd be able to keep it for like a week and I'd do that over and over. Totally worth it. Those were good times haha
@@therealcyanman yup! this game builds up amazing memories. I wish they would remaster it and maybe make a Lord of the rings game with this cartoon style.
I was given a second hand copy of the PS2 version as a Christmas gift one year. While I was a big Tolkein fan I had never heard of this game so I wasn't expecting much from it. However, to my surprise I found it really fun, and I still look back on it quite fondly.
ok. ok. I have never seen your channel before, but this video came up as recommended on my feed and the moment I saw Bilbo's huge play doh face in the thumbnail, I was suddenly 10 years old again. bc holy shit. I forgot ALL ABOUT this game. the hide and seek. the insane platforming. sneaking around the gd trolls. just. dang. thank you for the burst of nostalgic dopamine.
Had this as a kid on Gamecube, loved it
I remember being so excited for this game back in the day. I still have yet to complete it but what I did play of it definitely matched the magical feelings I had from reading the book.
Dude this is hilarious I’m subbing
5:52 My favorite thing about this level, is if you fall off at a certain point in the level, instead of dying, you just glitch through the remainder of the level into Gollum's Lair lol.
I played this so much.
Gosh, I definitely am guilty of forgetting about this game. I remember it now, though. I rented this game from a library in my hometown when I was way young. I don't remember the gameplay at all but I know I rented it from the library - and I remember going to the shelf and finding this game.
Man I remember loving this game as a kid and just hanging around the Hobbiton area living my best life! When you get into the actual game it becomes very difficult, and I could never beat it. Still very fond memories for me though.
Dude, love your videos. Just rewatched your metal gear rising videos. So awesome. You should do the Metal gear Vol 1 pack since they are now out.
One of the most nostalgic games of my childhood, the music is still top tier!
The "skips me memory" riddle was crazy, we were braking our heads over it in our playtheough.
😂 knew that mine cart reference was comin
