Excellent review. I just purchased a off road premium 4runner, in January. I commented about the continual discussion about the poor gas milage on another video. Considering, that those complaining, are mostly, buying trucks and, I see drivers of most trucks, as well as 99% of Americans, all driving at 80 mph, whenerver I'm driving. It's obviously, poor driving habits, that give poor gas mileage. I've been averaging 21 mpg since purchase, I drive at the speed limit, or a little above. I always get to my destination, and I've been driving for 64 years, 23 in England and 41 in America.
Congratulations and I 100% agree. Constantly reading comments on other videos about how inefficient this vehicle is and how poor the gas mileage is. I just don't get it.

Only issues after 200,000 miles were the fuel pump, starter, alternator and of course brakes and shocks. Yes it did see off road action!...lol!

I leave this part out too often but I really think it makes a difference-KDSS- great on washboard rds- thinking of a receiver hitch winch- cheers from Kansas
I love that color but hate how the front valance is silver on all of them. I just bought the same year/package six months ago in silver, so my valance matches. I would still almost trade for your color. I think the stock wheels look great with the silver.
Great video. Just bought the 2023 off road. This video confirms a lot of what I have heard or read myself. I have a lot of confidence in the versatility of the truck. Yes there are other trucks with more specific strengths like towing and off-roading but this truck can kind of do it all if you’re not going to extreme. Great price point too.
You're definitely right about the gas mileage. I have a 24 ORP and it gets around 15-16 city 20-21 hwy. The thing is, everyone has become so accustomed to getting 35mpg in anything they drive now because they all utilize newer tech. If you're coming from a pickup or an oldschool SUV, the MPG the 4runner gets is right where its supposed to be.
What other true truck is getting 35 mpg? Even the new turbo powertrains in Broncos, Tundras, tacomas, get 19-20 mpg. For what it is, the dinosaur 5 speed 4runner holds its own. I get 19.4 combined
@gogators043 No you're right. I mean most car reviewers and anyone complaining about the 4runners gas mileage are coming from CUV's (which are not proper SUV's, they're just lifted cars) and cars.
Id buy one as a second vehicle and use my fuel efficient car as a daily. People who complain about the gas mileage are the ones who use it as a daily. They charge so much for a 4Runner to begin with. Definitely not the vehicle to buy to save money. All of the money that’s being saved in the shop is being spent on the MSRP and the gas pump.
@Jack-pd4ps Agree with you 100 percent. That's what I did. My daily is an old Honda civic. Thing runs like a clock. Yeah for anyone looking for a 4runner, I would not have it as my only vehicle if you drive alot for errands and short trips. It's really best served as a road tripper/hauler or adventure vehicle for longer trips on weekends and such. Don't get me wrong, you can 100 percent daily drive it, but if all you're doing is general around town tasks, there are better vehicles out there to do it. As the commenter mentioned, they are very expensive up front and you will live at gas pump, paying $60-75 everytime to fill it up mind you.
Hey great video man. Have the same tired on my 22 and I really don’t like them on any slick surface lol. Gonna grab some at3w tires if I can. Also, not to be annoying, but it’s very important to the longevity of that beauty, that you do oil changes every 5,000 miles, not ten. Dealers are doing ten now to save money and make more profit, but there is a lot of evidence and a lot of master technician videos out there that document how bad that is becoming for the engines in the used market. Just food for thought, but that thing will go 500,000 if you change that oil every 5,000 and hit that transmission oil every 60,000 and hit the differentials and transfer case fluids every 30,000.
Here’s my problem with my 5th gen 4Runner. The brakes are strangely inconsistent, back up camera, and other cameras grainy as hell, at least in my vehicle crazy that it doesn’t have LED lights in the interior, the other thing is the headlights have strange obstructions / shadows in them, the side mirrors should be larger for a vehicle of that size, and the knobs for the radio should be beefier or at least the same size as the climate control knobs, also there should be more usable space in areas to organize throughout the vehicle, particularly with an off-road vehicle, the other thing and maybe this is an engineering issue that requires it to be this way, but I think that the forerunners a little too long and a little too wide. Outside of that they’re way more things I love about my fifth Gen
I have a 2013 Nissan Titan with 285,000 miles. Runs perfect but I want to get a 4 runner exactly like yours. Beautiful. My fuel economy is pretty bad so I looks like the 4 runner gets better mpgs then my Titan
@@michaelgossman except for they're running all day long while you're driving when you don't need them. Vehicles equipped with auto headlights have a sensor when it gets dark they turn on
@@OdysseyOffroadyeah my last few cars had that feature and I’ve become so dependent on it I decided to just leave them on and pretend they’re DRLs lol😂 pretty amazing ride if that’s our only complaint though 😊. Great video
Also I agree about the tires! I actually don’t mind them because my work commute is about 35 miles one way, but for the price of Duellers I think I’d rather a falken or ridge grappler next after these wear out.
It’s great how it is what would make it perfection is more comfortable seats . A v8 option based on the tundra 2004 model if you tow . That’s it .but I don’t want any new Toyota anymore unless rich and have my 4 runner for backup .
2022 4Runner TRD Pro. My complaint is pretty much the gas mileage and the absolutely atrocious low quality cameras. I had a 2020 4Runner and the backup camera was better on that. Explain that one to me. But otherwise, it’s been flawless. I’m putting on the Westcott lift and 285s, which will give worse fuel economy but it’ll get rid of the nose dive. I accept that it gets poor MPG and doesn’t have anything fancy. I know it’ll run for 300k miles if I want.
@@Cortezuma idk about the poor mpgs. Like i said in the video i think it does great. Got almost 30k on it now and avging almost 19mpgs lifetime. I think that's great for an suv thats a real truck and highly capable. I agree the camera sucks but not the end of the world imo. I hardly use backup cameras. People rely to much on tech these days imo.
@@OdysseyOffroad I’ve had a Gobi rack on mine for 2 years. Switched to Sherpa and got a bit of an increase. I have the Pro so it’s also a little less. But my average is about 15.5. My 2020 Limited was definitely better on the MPGs. With an all terrain tire, lift and roof rack (the stock TRD Pro roof rack zaps mileage too) it’s somewhat expected.
Get a bug shield and it will keep some rocks hitting your hood. I also have a grey metallic grey one and the bug shield really looks cool because its almost the same color. Amazing landscape where you live. Almost looks like a 4runner commercial.
My kids step on the little hump between the seat and rear door when getting in. I got Lasfit mats and they protect the carpet better than stock. They were also about 100 bucks for front and rear mats. Check them out.
Love my 2023 orp. 2000 miles in. I have 3 beefs: 1) turn signal doesn’t blink 3 times when I “half push” 2) no electric tailgate 3) stock stereo (and camera resolution for backup) is absolute garbage. I listen to a lot of music so am conflicted. IfI get aftermarket, some stereo shop is going to take apart that beautiful Taichi factory build quality. Open to advice…
Well the first two there's nothing you can do about. To be honest with you and never even noticed the blinker thing. Electric tailgate is something that i have had on 2 prior vehs both the motor went bad out of warranty. Changing the stereo on the 4 runners is not that invasive as this is where the old school is a good thing. The head unit is not as integrated into the veh as newer cars and trucks have become.
@@Jake-sp7kd wow so weird. We get over 20 on rd trips with family of 4 and all our luggage at speeds between 70 and 80 mph. Very pleased. Is yours stock?
@@OdysseyOffroad Yep mine is stock. 20k miles and sometimes with a rooftop box when road tripping, sometimes not. Without my rooftop box I get maybe 16-17 mpg highway. I'm not interested in the next gen hybrid 4runner they're coming out with (just not my style preference) but I just saw the new Scouts being released in a few years and might have to grab one of those (boxy shape and capable + will be a lot better day to day on my wallet hehe)
I’m in the market for one of these. I have a 2005 with V8 but in 2wd sadly. I would still probably sell if it were 4wd. I’m interested in doing a mild over land build. Do you think the off road premium is worth the money? Thanks for sharing
I could use some real world 4runner advice. My fam is considering nabbing one of these final 5th gens. Narrowed it down to the Offroad Premium, Offroad Premium with KDSS, or the TRDPro. Resale value is meaningful, though we do keep vehicles for the long term. Mostly on-road and light trail performance prioritized. No major offroading or modification intended at this time (perhaps mods in future), but we like to have serious get-out-of-a-jam capability just in case. How would you rate these three options?
Interestingly they are all almost just as capable IMO. They all have rear locker , crawl control and multi terrain select and A-trac. Kdss acts kind of like a sway bar disconnect but not as good, its limited. It will give you slightly better front articulation. If your keeping it long term the 4Runner holds its value well. The Pro will hold its value best but that considering you pay a fair price for it. Msrp DO NOT pay a markup. On top things mentioned already the pro gives you about an inch and a half more ride height up front, better offroad tires and much better dampened fox suspension. I would say if you dont plan to do the suspension get the pro and have a nice setup right out of the box. If you plan to do aftermarket suspension then the pro isnt worth it and get whatever offroad model you can get the best deal on. I don't think kdss is enough benefit to make it worth paying extra either. Also having KDSS limits your options on aftermarket suspension setups available. The stock suspension on a non pro 4Runner is unbelievably soft. Too soft I say.
I was quoted 38.9k for a Used 2022 TRD OFF Prem with an ODM 44,565. I'm really close to pulling the trigger to purchase. Going to wait if I can get it to 36k
How does it handle on the highway and around town without KDSS? I’ve been reading reviews and the KDSS fans make it sound like it rolls too much without it.
As i mentioned in the video. The front shocks are soft so you get some nose dive braking. Other than that it drives terrific. Street driving is no difference. Kdss has no effect on daily drivability. Kdss comes into play when offroading and the suspension articulates better its almost like a sway bar disconnect. It's the opposite of what you are saying. Getting kdss also narrows the options for aftermarket suspension should you want to upgrade in the future.
4.0L V6 Gas ⛽️ LAST of the proven reliability! New electric ⚡️ w/ turbos will NOT go the distance… I personally own a 2005 Toyota Sequoia V8 w/ over 200K+ miles & just breaking it in… only changed timing belt twice 100k each & religiously changed oil every 5k with Mobile 1 5W-30 Full Synthetic… would not trade it for electric ⚡️ until they too prove themselves 500k- 1 Million miles like 2000’s Tundra & Sequoia … proven 💯 % Toyota reliability!
OTT tune! Won't Void your warranty adds drivability improvement, towing improvement, your motor will sound much cleaner after the tune & probably even improve ⛽ mileage! Best 💰 i spend on the truck so far imo
@@OdysseyOffroad I do not yet own a 4runner but I read that the KDSS solves the nose dive problem or at least makes it much less noticeable. Would be interesting to compare with and without.
@@codywy5579 the nose dice issue is due to soft front springs and valving in the shock. The kdss just gives the front end a seay bar disconnect effect when traversing terrain (a little more articulation). Also would affect body roll side to side but not nose dive when braking.
@@OdysseyOffroad th-cam.com/video/6Wavg6av4eE/w-d-xo.html starting at 2:15 into the video he explains KDSS also has on road functions and lessens braking dive and body roll.
@@OdysseyOffroadi have the same truck with kdss. It stiffens up the suspension when going fast and lets it be loose when offroading slowly. No nose dive on mine
I appreciate the video. I’m picky about AC performance and you’re the perfect 4Runner owner to ask (given your location): how does the AC perform in the Arizona heat? Specifically, idling/drive thru. Thank you!
The ac is terrific. That's a great point sorry I didn't mention that in the video. I think the old school functionality of it with the dial and not having it climate control is nice.
Best bang for your buck improvements for squishy brake pedal feel and nose dive in my opinion are off-road tires and stainless, braided brake lines all around. 👍🏼

@@therealmorganfreeman2875 I saw something on this that it may actual be the plastic underneath the passenger seat. Worth checking out seems like a bunch of people had this issue and the fix was some kind of spacer to fill that gap causing "the squeak" may or may not help but worth a shot.

Too expensive IMO currently for what it is. Forget the MPG, yeah sure. But the power is just too little and the 5 speed transmission is just awful. If toyota would just switch that to an 8 speed, it would easily get better fuel economy, but we'll have to wait for the 6th gen. Excited to see the power train which likely will be a hyper reliable toyota hilux turbo (which for the record, the hilux is the most reliable turbo car in the world routinely pushing over 1M miles on the same turbo...so take that "turbos are bad" people because the hilux is a legend) on a way more powerful 4cyl which likely will match the 465 lb.-ft. the tacoma produces at 21/26 MPG! compare that to 278 Lb.-Ft. on the 5th gen 4 runner. And that peak torque is lower in the rpm band (1800rpm) which is a huge annoyance of the 4runner (which peaks at a whopping 5600RMP!!! WTF!) and part of the reason it is so incredibly inefficient. And that's the iforce max option which has an inline electric motor on a NiMH battery (super reliable tech proven by the prius) for power not MPG. If you go for the regular powertrain because you're scared of NiMH, you still get 317 lb.-ft and just under 2000rpm on an 8 speed. That will run circles around the 4runner in every possible conceivable way. It is just insane toyota hasn't updated this vehicle's powertrain or transmission and an SR5 with dealer junk goes for almost 55K! that was TRD pro price just 5 years ago and it is basically the same damn car from 5 years ago with just nicer blinkers and lights.
@013 It is worth the same it was worth pre-pandemic, not what they are charging now. 10-15k more for the same exact thing is 10-15k in pre-paid repairs. Screw that "bullet proof" reliability. That's just pre-paid breakdown repairs then.
Your answer is simple. Simple is better and less expensive to work on. If it isn’t broken then why try to change it. Manufacturers have to keep up with what people want but if you know what you are purchasing in detail then this old technology is just perfect for many people. Not interested in the new 2025 4 Runner for many reasons. Price will be outrageous!!!
"Green vehicles and battery-powered garbage?" Okay dinosaur man. I love my 4runner and I love my Prius. Both serve a purpose and there's room in this world for both. It isn't an either-or proposition. Get your head out of the sand
Haha What exactly is it that I don't know about EV'S? That you're strip mining the earth with slave labor to get the raw materials? You do your road trips in an EV and wait at charging stations for an hour to get your battery up to 100% and I'll gas up in 90 seconds and wave at you while you're still charging. 👋🏻
@OdysseyOffroad Based on Brian's comment the CEO of Ford must not know anything about EV's either, they're completely abandoning their EV division due to billions in losses.
You think everyone who doesn’t share your opinion gets theirs from Fox News? You’re a simpleton. You’re being spoon fed “information” on EVs and climate change from people who profit from it. I love that color but hate how the front valance is silver on all of them. I just bought the same year/package six months ago in silver, so my valance matches. I would still almost trade for your color. I think the stock wheels look great with the silver.
Yea the silver valance in eh.. but we may swap it for black ones from a trd pro
Totally agree. Thanks for commenting!
100%, thanks for the comment 💪🏻

Thanks for the comment! I will absolutely do a follow up when we replace the tires. 🤘🏻
That's awesome that you got such great reliability out of the Nissan. I've heard good things about those trucks as well. The 4Runner has been awesome!
I have the same 4runner! I keep the headlights on 24/7, there is an auto high beam button on the left side.
Yes I never use auto high beams. I never use high beams at all so I don't use that feature. It would be nice to have auto headlights though haha.
Same! Just leave them on. They shut off after a minute. Just like a car with auto headlights.

It’s great how it is what would make it perfection is more comfortable seats . A v8 option based on the tundra 2004 model if you tow . That’s it .but I don’t want any new Toyota anymore unless rich and have my 4 runner for backup .
Yeah I agree we have no plans on getting rid of this thing. It's been Rock solid.
Funny you mentioned it I was actually just looking at those I've heard good things about them.
Love my 2023 orp. 2000 miles in. I have 3 beefs:
1) turn signal doesn’t blink 3 times when I “half push”
2) no electric tailgate
3) stock stereo (and camera resolution for backup) is absolute garbage.

I’m in the market for one of these. I have a 2005 with V8 but in 2wd sadly. I would still probably sell if it were 4wd. I’m interested in doing a mild over land build. Do you think the off road premium is worth the money? Thanks for sharing
I think so. You get all the 4x4 goodies and locker and not as expensive as a trd pro.
Yes. Get a pro if you can though. Worth it.
@@OdysseyOffroad Thank you for the detailed response!

The KDSS makes the ride much better in town. I had a 2016 SR5 Premium but my 2023 TRD ORD Premium handles a lot better.

How much is bullet proof reliability worth?
@013 It is worth the same it was worth pre-pandemic, not what they are charging now. 10-15k more for the same exact thing is 10-15k in pre-paid repairs. Screw that "bullet proof" reliability. That's just pre-paid breakdown repairs then.
