A engineer told me a long time ago the way they keep their job is to figure out how to make something cheaper to last a certain amout of time. After that how to repair to keep it running was not their department, that was another department. As long as they could sell new they worked on making it cheaper. When people stopped buying them they would come out with a new inproved one as they would advertise not talking about just how bad they had made the old one over years by cutting cost. The new improve ones would be tested by the buyers after the company had already gotten paid.

With the toro, I have a 6000 with a 31 kawi and throttling back a little with wet grass helps reduce the build up but it may be tough with the 25 hp.

Johnny...good vid. You may not have meant to, but your in your first frame comparison, you were pointing to the un-sprung portion of the Ferris front castor control arm which is lighter by design. Automotive/racing engineers always seek to make those un-sprung components strong, but as light as possible. This is to allow more responsive front wheel response, up and down over uneven ground, resulting in better, and longer ground contact for better ride, and control. Blessings. PS: I run Ferris my self, and have for seven years now, with good success, and no frame welding or weights needed..

Excellent video. We run Ferris mowers.
The 3200Z 37hp/72” to be specific. Right now we are shopping for next year to see if there’s somebody that has a better mouse trap. Right now nobody compares to the Ferris in ride. Nobody!
We mow large (very rough) commercial properties and the 3200Z is what it takes to do them.
As far as cut quality, a lot of it has to do with the blades. I’ve researched several types and makes of blades and seemingly have came up with a formula that works for us.

I have a a Ferris IS3000 and a Ferris IS5100. I've hit hidden stumps with the deck of both a couple of times. Didn't faze the deck. It is reinforced where it needs to be and that's what they'll tell you in their marketing. Johnny's Ferris is known for having that weakness where he had to weld. I've heard they have improved it to make that area stronger. As far as comfort, I am hoping other manufacturers will improve the ride quality of their machines to the level of the Ferris. You might be fine with the harsh rides when you're young but, it will work on your back and, if you operate a Z turn without a good suspension system, it will damage your back over the years. That's the most important reason why I own my Ferris Mowers and won't consider another until the other manufactures improve the ride.

People just don't say their honest thoughts because their afraid that the company who makes the mower won't let them demo their mower again. Also, In one of Brian's video he demoded a Toro Grand Multi-force and took it to a field to mow 2ft tall grass and then compared it to a one purpose no additional implements mower. Which, is very unfair because your comparing a machine that can do more than just mow grass to a machine that is just designed to mow grass. I don't mean to just pick on Brian here, other youtuber's have done this also. But, great video Johnny. Are you planning on going to the GIE this year?

  • @douglaspost5097

You mentioned that the Ferris deck is "only" 10 gauge but it is reinforced while the other one is 7 gauge. I guess that might make a difference if you're bulldozing stumps or something, but if you're just mowing lawns seems like the reinforced 10 gauge should be plenty strong enough. I have a Ferris Z700 61"cut and a John Deere X394 with a 48" deck lawn tractor that my wife and I use to mow 25 lawns with and the John Deere deck is holding up nicely. It has 1300 Hours on it with no cracks, dents, dings or anything else. I think the deck thickness has become almost a fix to a non existent problem. If you're careful mowing, watch what you're doing, a lighter deck shouldn't be much of a problem. I wonder if the Ferris having more horsepower and torque might explain the non clumping as well as the issues you pointed out. If the engine has more power I would think it should throw the clippings more evenly. Mine throws the clippings more evenly than the Deere. But I'm comparing a 61" deck and 27hp to a 48"deck with 22hp. There's really no comparison in this case. I'd never be without either of them if I could help it. The Deere can get through wet stuff much better than the Ferris, probably because of the huge weight difference, but the Ferris can mow twice as fast because of the speed and deck size. Anyway, I digress. This was about the most unbiased review I've seen in a long time. Great job, thanks.

Excellent content Johnny. It's quality material. I have one complaint and I know you've said before that your not into expencive camera equipment which is understandable. However unless your still using a bag phone, most normal cell phones will record in HD now and this video is so blurry we can hardly see with the 240 resolution. I have to believe that it's just a setting or something that your missing here. Please let me know what your recording with and how your getting it posted, I'd like to help you improve the display quality. Your videos are inspiring and i feel like there is so much more to get out of them if we can just get a clear picture.
I should record before and after shots of my turbo force deck after my monday route. I fill a 5 gal bucket every week with the stuff thats stuck under it. Cut quality goes to shit by the end of the day. It cuts so nice the first half of the day but it sucks how much i have to clean out of the deck daily.

Ferris 3100 are awesome machines...Briggs and Stratton engines are the only thing we have problems with on them. The Commercial Turf engines are not that great. Oil seals, burning oil on hills when laying over on the right side, and we have had a couple of ignition coil fail.

Any sports car enthusiast can tell you about the importance of unsprung weight. Magnesium wheels were not invented as bling. The Ferris has independent front suspension and low unsprung weight. That is good for cut quality and ride comfort. It is not good for pushing around dumpsters. The Ferris is a sports car and the Toro is a tank! A more important question is who is the driver. If the driver owns the mower, then go Ferris. If the driver is a hung over employee, then you need the Toro. In this case, survivability trumps finesse.
