I remember this song well. When I was about 4 years old, my mother taught me this song. I'm so happy to see it's living on. I think I'm going to go thank my mom now.
sorry for the delay in replying. After a little research, I found out Mary's husband owns a publishing company and he is the one who has refused to even copy the tapes. Anne's husband Patrick has requested and has had a refusal. Anne herself has been in poor health for a while now so she is not up to chasing this. Shame. I do have some home videos of Anne singing in her garden in the 80's - I will be happy to post soon.
Hello, I don't know if you will see this post as I noticed your post was 11 years ago. I wanted to ask you if you ever posted any videos of Anne singing in her garden? Being a huge Anne Byrne fan for a very long time, I would love to see them! I know Anne passed away a few years ago now and was very sad to hear about her passing. I believe I have most of her albums all on vinyl but it would be great to see more videos of Anne.
Anne Byrne has an extremely beautiful voice. I have some of her vinyl LPs' and just surprized she was not more well known, outside of Ireland anyway. Has her own style but of the caliber of vocals like Joan Baez. Love Anne's singing!
@folkmusicgirl Her vinyl is so hard to find. Mary Black (a fine singer in her own right) owns the master tapes of all of Anne's albums and refuses to allow them to be used for re-release. Anne unfortunately signed the rights away in the sixties but her request for re-release was rejected by the Blacks. Hard to believe.
Bob Dylan's favorite song (by themselves). A very impressive story, one inescapable fate ...(still i love you Flora...maybe, perhaps, Claudia?... a fate for a life?)
@flooberbloob How did Mary come to own Anne's music - how did that happen and most of all why, why, would Mary refuse to re-release Anne's music? Is there no legal way that Anne could do anything about this? This is a shame - I just cannot understand why Mary would do this. What possible reason could there be for Mary Black to withhold any of Anne's music to be re-released. Thanks.
Thank you so much for your reply regarding this situation. Just cannot imagine why Mary's husband would refuse to copy the tapes. This really really is a shame! I'm sitting here just trying to figure out what reason there could possibly be to refuse this request by Anne's husband? Please post videos of Anne singing in the garden. I just love to hear Anne sing! I am so sorry to hear of Anne's poor health. I enjoy Anne's music so very much! I would appreciate it very much! Thank you!
NeeKoLaj Its Croatian, sang in Croatian language by a Croatian artist. Since Juga doesn't exist anymore he is Croatian whether he likes it or not. I certainly don't like him and dont really care about him , you can take him to your Serbia, but he did a great cover of the song.
He is Yugoslav, he says it himself. The song is in Serbo-Croatian, the official language of that time. The song is from a musical movement that existed only during Yugoslavia. If you want to argue that such a thing as Yugoslavs don't exist, then sod off.
I don't really give a F but the song IS in Croatian language, as almost all of Azra's songs are. On a side note, for all you nationalists fucks Štulić is born in Macedonia and the fact that his father's name is Ivan and not Jovan is enough for me.
1. Listen up you serbian piece of shit. There was, there is and there will always be a Croatian language. First of all not all Croats speak shtokavian dialect, which doesen't mean that shtokavian is purely serbian because of that, there is also kajkavian and chakavian which only shows how rich our language and culture is unlike yours. 2. It is known from the beginning of time that Ivan = Croatian, Jovan = Serbian. 3. Prvo srbi pa amebe? Nabijem te nakurac.
I know this song from Peter, Paul and Mary....the lyrics are a little different....WHO IS THIS ????? Was looking for this for my work collegue....Lilly of the EAST
Richard Harkness - Anne Byrne (singing) and Jesse Owens (guitar). It seems to have been recorded in the Abbey Tavern in Howth near Dublin. Coming back to it myself as Anne has sadly passed away this week.
Lyrics: [Verse 1] When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast And the name she bore was Flora, the lily of the west [Verse 2] I courted lovely Flora some pleasure for to find But she turned unto another man whose sore distressed my mind She robbed me of my liberty, deprived me of my rest Then go, my lovely Flora, the lily of the west [Verse 3] Away down in yonder shady grove, a man of high degree Conversing with my Flora there, it seemed so strange to me And the answer that she gave to him it sore did me oppress I was betrayed by Flora, the lily of the west [Verse 4] I stepped up my rival, dagger in my hand I seized him by the collar, and body made him stand Seeing mad by desperation I pierced him to the breast All this for lovely Flora, the lily of the west [Verse 5] I had to stand my trial, I had to make my plea They placed me in the witness box and then commenced on me Although she swore my life away, deprived me of my rest Still I love my faithless Flora, the Lily of the west
When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast And the name she bore was Flora, the Lily of the West I courted lovely Flora, some pleasure there to find But she turned unto another man which sore distressed my mind She robbed me of my liberty, deprived me of my rest Then go, my lovely Flora, the Lily of the West Way down in yonder shady grove, a man of high degree Conversing with my Flora there, it seemed so strange to me And the answer that she gave to him, it sore did me oppress I was betrayed by Flora, the Lily of the West I stepped up to my rival, my dagger in my hand I seized him by the collar and I boldly bade him stand Being mad to desperation I pierced him in the breast Then go, my lovely Flora, the Lily of the West And I had to stand my trial, I had to make my plea They placed me in the criminal box and then commenced on me Although she swore my life away, deprived me of my rest Still I love my faithless Flora, the Lily of the West
I've heard Irish Folk, American Bluegrass, and even rock-and-roll versions of this song, but Peter Paul & Mary's is still my favorite: th-cam.com/video/WXpFgexxFWs/w-d-xo.html

This is so hauntingly beautiful, but Croatian cover done by Branimir Štulić is also great, check it out.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
When first I came to Louisville, some pleasure there to find
A damsel there from Lexington was pleasing to my mind
Her rosy cheeks, her ruby lips, like arrows pierced my breast
And the name she bore was Flora, the lily of the west
[Verse 2]
I courted lovely Flora some pleasure for to find
But she turned unto another man whose sore distressed my mind
She robbed me of my liberty, deprived me of my rest
Then go, my lovely Flora, the lily of the west
[Verse 3]
Away down in yonder shady grove, a man of high degree
Conversing with my Flora there, it seemed so strange to me
And the answer that she gave to him it sore did me oppress
I was betrayed by Flora, the lily of the west
[Verse 4]
I stepped up my rival, dagger in my hand
I seized him by the collar, and body made him stand
Seeing mad by desperation I pierced him to the breast
All this for lovely Flora, the lily of the west
[Verse 5]
I had to stand my trial, I had to make my plea
They placed me in the witness box and then commenced on me
Although she swore my life away, deprived me of my rest
Still I love my faithless Flora, the Lily of the west
Well done on updating us.Have you posted those videos yet, if so how can I access them. I really hope Anne's health has improved.
My parents song😂
@plesisnjim probably dead because this is recorded in 1967.

Isn't this Joan Baez in her younger years?
you call her Anne Byrne, I have her singing on my channel.
@gagl16 AZRA bro :)
@19RaS93 its not on serbian, its on croatian
I've heard Irish Folk, American Bluegrass, and even rock-and-roll versions of this song, but Peter Paul & Mary's is still my favorite: th-cam.com/video/WXpFgexxFWs/w-d-xo.html

Competent, pleasant, but where's the passion? Joan Baez did it so much better.
