    To the guy asking about the fog lights at 5:45 (who's disabled replies), these are steering responsive fog lights. They turn on in the direction you're turning so you can see better into the corner. Several manufacturers do this.

      Nice feature. I thought the water had shorted something down there so the lights came on depending on which way the steering was turning lmao.

    • @madalexzombie
      @madalexzombie 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Engineering Explained It's strange. Fog lights should definitely be off before entering water. Otherwise they may crack because of fast glass temperature changing.
      P.S. On the video sometimes the left is on, sometimes the right, sometimes both.

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Alexander Konotop These aren't table lamp bulbs haha, they can take a little thermal action. Lights are pretty efficient these days regardless, so they probably don't generate much heat.

    • @madalexzombie
      @madalexzombie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engineering Explained Some of them are quite hot, there are lots of mentions at different forums. And the suffered cars are not always old. Here is an example with photos:
      www.team-bhp.com/forum/technical-stuff/135206-mystery-cracked-fog-lamps.html
      Most of mentions are unfortunately without photos, just forum questions like "omg, my fog lights are cracked, what could it be?". So sometimes it happens though some of lights types maybe aren't really hot and so won't crack.

    I just spent 5 days in one of these in Death Valley. Driving on the
    highway to the park revealed a tall vehicle with a relativity narrow
    track that didn't encourage anything over moderate corning speeds. The
    2.4 engine seemed to designed with NVH (noise,vibration & harshness)
    to encourage people to opt for the V-6 on Jeep's larger offerings. The
    seats are not comfortable on a long trip and NEED a lumbar adjustment
    like the Latitude model has. The automatic transmission occasionally
    left us flat footed for long moments after pressing on the gas pedal.
    However, on the Jeep trails and dirt roads the little guy earned it's
    nick name: MIGHTY MOUSE! Its off-road capabilities at a low price are
    the reasons to purchase one of these. Rather then compare it to other small crossovers,
    think of it as a cheaper and more comfortable alternative to a Wrangler
    for moderate trails.

    You can't expect a lot of real off-road capability with this type of vehicles. But it is short, not bad on fuel, not bad ground clearance good approach/departure angles... I am buying one for my wife as she always scrapes the hell of the front and rear bumpers.

I wouldn't use this as an extreme off road vehicle but use it kind of how they have it here where there is cut trails. for extreme 4x4 of build me a capable vehicle do to that.

    • @Franco96GTA
      @Franco96GTA 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obsidian Viper The Jeep isn't an Italian creation, but the Renegade is, as well as all the Jeep that will come after her, Now the FCA has bought half of America with Chrysler, and also the Viper you have as image is under the control FCA.

    • @GreenJeep1998
      @GreenJeep1998 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obsidian Viper Actually, it's about as close to an Italian Creation as a Jeep can currently get. It's built in Italy at the same plant and on the platform that the Fiat 500X is. It looks the Jeep part, and I'm sure Jeep had plenty of input into the engineering of the vehicle's off road capability too.........but it is very Italian.

    • @freddybell8328
      @freddybell8328 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Franco96Juve both of you are wrong it is an american jeep because jeep is an american brand even with fca. The jeep was designed and engineered by american minds and even if you argue that its an italian jeep because its assembled in Italy you cant weigh were its made over the design and engineering if you think that way then where did the materials come from?

    • @Franco96GTA
      @Franco96GTA 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obsidian Viper The Renegade uses the same plant of 500X, it was engineered by Italian engineers, it mounts italian engine and it use the same materials of 500X and of the FCA group. Resigned, now the Jeep is Italian, also the Cherokee mounts Italian engine and transmission, it use plastic from Fiat and it is designed by Italian engineers. Now the Jeep has only the name and its nature from off-road American. Indeed even the more because the new Jeep will also be 4x2 and SUV for the city, like 500X.

  • @jeepncrowd
    @jeepncrowd 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    She was mistaken. It doesn't have a locking rear diff. The lock feature converts it from an AWD type vehicle that allows power slipping between the front and rear tires to a true 4x4 vehicle that forces power more evenly between the front and back.

    • @snowcat3116

      jeepncrowd True, it only lock the electronic operated clutch between front and rear axle. Same design on a 4wd Nissan Qashkai or my 4wd Dacia Duster. Why it say "lock" ? Because otherwise the mode is "auto" so you can't tell if the car is running on 2 or 4wd

    i plan to purchase one of these. since it isnt really gonna be for offroading, i will get the 'sport' model. same power, but doesnt have skid plates and hooks. but i took it for a test drive today and was very impressed. we took it through 2 feet of snow and had some good fun. i like the ride height and position. very solid vehicle. and in the test, i didnt drop under 25mpg. definitely great for winter driving.

    So, according to a bunch of journalists, if you are looking at buying a small, stylish automatic 4x4 to take off-roading regularly, this is the one to have... uh, something very is wrong with that sentence... I do love the easter eggs though, that's the kind of thing that makes you fall in love with a vehicle long term.

      +Nicola Monti when testing vehicles, they dont let you go off the beaten track... they dont know the people driving the car or their abilities as a driver, so they put them on something a soccer mom can handle. i took one of these in 24 inch deep snow in a test drive just to see when it would loose traction... it didnt. had a little trouble stopping on the ice though. the extra weight is great for getting going, but more mass means more distance in the stopping.

    • @MagnusHedemark
      @MagnusHedemark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's okay that the drivers weren't allowed offroad, but it's dishonest to offer a review where it's stated that the vehicle is really good offroad when it was never actually taken offroad to confirm the suspicion.

    This obviously isn't your fault or anything, but man this off-road course is weak.
    A good off-road course needs to test clearance, approach/departure angles, and traction. This course didn't really do any of those things, besides one section of that hill. Why don't they make this an actual test instead of just having you drive through some puddles? Seriously a sedan could do most of this.

    whats the difference between Trailhawk and longitude? can anyone tell if its only ground clearance?

    • @TheKagedd
      @TheKagedd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trailhawk (abrv as TH) offers a variety of things over the longitude (abrv as LON) (called the latitude in the U.S.).
      The TH has an increased ground clearance, a Rock Mode on the Select Terrain system, 3 red tow hooks in the U.S. / 2 in other markets, a 4x4 Low system, higher placed air intake (for water fording), reinforced electrical system (for water fording also), TH is only available as 4x4, TH is only availble with the 2.4L Tigershark engine & 9-Speed ZF transmission in the U.S. (other markets have an EcoDiesel available).
      The LON/LAT models have 4x4 as an option, lowered ride height, in the U.S. the LAT model has the option for different transmissions and engine combinations all have the option to have 4x4 or FWD, it is basically a sport model with the ability to add on a few goodies, however, standard are body colored door handles, UConnect 5.0, 5in TFT display, my sky is an option, UConnect 6.5 is an option, heated seats are an option, all of these are not options on the Sport model. The TH is based off of the LON/LAT model

      Thank you for a detailed Answer. When looking to buy a compact Off Roader, I did a lot of research and Finally Bought myself a 2017 Suzuki Jimny. Reason for the decision was that we do not have rocks in UAE. we have Desert and Suzuki Jimny is like a Crab on sand. Renegade won't have much luck on Sand. I went to Jeep Dealer many times in Dubai and every time they told me, if I need to goto desert I better get a Wrangler. as Renegade is not designed for that sort of Off Roading.
      Seeing How Suzuki Jimny owners pull circles around Expensive modified Wranglers and expensive Nissan Patrols stuck in Desert, I went for Suzuki Jimny and my First test in Desert with Jimny were surprisingly good. This Vehicle just floats over sand without even deflating tires. I purposely dug it in the sand with 2 wheel drive mode. Switch to 4WD, dug in sand more. then Switch to 4WD Low and it backed off so fine that I was surprised.
      I had Ford Ranger WildTrack, Ford F150 and Later an Expedition. All of those were like rocks digging and getting stuck in sand every time I brought them in. Yes Unfair to say that as I am not an experienced Desert Driver, but again same in experienced Desert Driver as I am, Suzuki Jimny Never got stuck :D
      Only Issue with Jimny is that its slow, not much powerful and outdated tech. Jeep Renegade has new Tech, Great Sound System, comfort of 4 doors and boot space, and 9 speed Auto with 2.4L engine giving almost as good Fuel consumption as Suzuki Jimny 1.3L DOHC Engine. but again I go to Desert Weekly and I would be spending more time digging Renegade out of sand than Enjoying driving :D
      I still love the looks and interior of Renegade. Unfortunately Trailhawk is not released in UAE yet i believe, or else I might have taken it.

      Thanks Buddy. I met the owner of Liwa Suzuki Jimny Team at SkyHub RC Airfield. They all know me due to my videos on TH-cam and when they saw me with New Jimny they were so happy and welcomed me to team. I hope to find time to go off roading with Jimny Team in coming months.
      He told me he will introduce me to a guy who can reprogram the ECU to get more power out of engine. But I am not kinda in mood to do that. I might just add Spacers and Under Plates for protection and go Hit the Desert straight. This Vehicle is way too much fun to drive over sand. it drifts, it climbs without any issues and if deflate the tires, it will climb to the top of Jabel Al Faya Sand Dune too :)
      I shall post regular videos of my Desert adventures in Jimny Soon.

    Jeep's marketing department did a great job of making this sound like it is way more than it is.
    "Active Drive Low" = does NOT have a low gear. Just forces the transmission to stay in 1st gear.
    "4wd Lock" = does NOT lock any differential. It just engages the clutch pack between the front and rear differentials so that it is not switching between 2wd and 4wd. At 8:11 you ask her this question directly and her answer is completely FALSE. The rear differential does NOT lock. The center differential does NOT lock. In reality this does not even have a center differential it has a "transfer power unit" and that does NOT lock either.
    "20:1 crawl ratio" = this statement is true but the way the marketing department uses it is as a relative term. 20:1 is good compared to what? What we are comparing it to is never mentioned. Compared to any actual off road vehicle this ratio would be pathetic. The obvious comparison that they should be sharing is with a non-trailhawk Renegade. Jeep never mentions the crawl ratio of the regular Renegade. But they love to mention that with the trailhawk you get an impressive 20:1. I don't know what the crawl ratio of a regular Renegade is but I am willing to bet it is close to 17:1. So in reality this is barely any different. Not only that but the timing of when they mention it is always right after they mention that it comes with the Active Drive Low 4wd system, implying that this has something to do with the improved crawl ratio. In reality it has nothing to do with it since there is no actual low gear in the 4wd system. The gearing that contributes to the crawl ratio of this vehicle is 1st gear and the final drive ratio. Since the regular Renegade comes with the same transmission the gear ratio of 1st gear is the same. So the only difference is the final drive ratio is slightly higher on the trailhawk.
    Even though this is way less capable than Jeep would like to admit, it is still way more off road ready that any of the competitors in the sub-compact CUV class. I just wish they would call it as it is.

    this is honestly so much like the fiat 500l except with the outdated 2.4l. by the way hp doesnt matter, its torque that does the hard work, however often overlooked by most editors and vehicle testors. perhaps this car wont die on ya due to low oil ( often seen the 2.4l burn oil, which supplies the intake valve actuators) over all i see this thing in 2 aspects, yes its new and its cool, yet as a professional I fully anticipate there to be many problems with it based on little research and development. this vehicle has been rushed to market using many of the same components as the cherokee which has proven to be problematic. the hill descent? yeah ford has perfected that 7 years ago? you may wonder why the less aggressive tires... i am confident that is for ride quality as owners will probably almost never use it offroad due to very limited capability.

    I like the renegade and Ive been debating on either the latitude or the trailhawk. I dont usually buy Americans cars because of reliability reasons, especially from jeep, but i really do like the Renegade and this model is made by fiat so I really dont know if that means better or worse reliability. Between the latitude and the trailhawk what is more comfortable? Im aslo debating on the mazda CX5 I test drove that as well and it was very quiet and nice on the inside. Im going to try the Honda HRV soon as well. Anyone got any recomendations or comments?

      William Su I think if you never plan on taking it off-road the Honda/Mazda make more sense (economical, historically reliable, better fuel economy). If you are going to be using it to have some fun off-road, the Renegade will keep you smiling. :)

      It depends on what you want to do offroad. The most I would go offroad is a trail similar to the one in this video (even if I had a full size truck) or a beach.
      But for anything more technical, I'd rather have a dedicated offroad vehicle -- which likely wouldn't be street legal.

    • @GBR080R
      @GBR080R 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evgeni Sibirkin I doubt it has a lockable rear diff- like say a Rubicon. I think it's a center diff but powering the rear axle. So it "locks in" the rear axle- that's my guess

    • @jeepncrowd
      @jeepncrowd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      She was mistaken. It doesn't have a locking rear diff. The lock feature converts it from an AWD type vehicle that allows power slipping between the front and rear tires to a true 4x4 vehicle that forces power more evenly between the front and back.

    • @GreenJeep1998
      @GreenJeep1998 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought it was a center diff that used the ABS as a form of traction management and that the KL Cherokee Trailhawk had the rear locker while the Rubicons and Power Wagons had lockers on both ends.

      In some parts of the country you need to be able to get to the trail in the first place. ;)
      Where I am to get to places where you need 4x4, you need to travel maybe 300-400 miles. Within 300 miles there are a few trails -- most of which you can handle with fwd if you are smart about it and there is 1 where people take their fancy rubicons to break it on man-made obstacles.

      +Serge Smith the plastic is meant to make the car last longer in winter weather. In the north (Canada , and new England) SALT EATS EVERYTHING STEEL. This is why the expected life of a car is shorter up north, the frame, fenders, brakes, brake line fittings, and just about anything not aluminum or plastic gets rust within 7ish years depending on maintenance. Then the car looks ugly and everything starts to break. The wondrous joy of plastic fenders is that they last WAY longer, and are lighter in some instances. (this is why plastic intake manifolds exist).
