Well written and it looks that the author actually played the game and he did not tried to spent a whole video comparing it to Persona 5 (since they are two completely different type of games) instead of actually reviewing it. @@kiritokazuto2398 it would not surprise me that the first time you tried to search was not there was because IGN deleted it and then re-uploaded it in order to avoid further dislikes. They have done that many times in the past.
They are not completely different though. I'm a fan too and I think the only difference is that you don't equip demons in smt. Also your companions are not humans but that's about it. The battle system is completely identical now that the kaja skills became single targeted

Honestly i wasn't that much into jrpgs, but SMT iv and P4/5 really made me fall in love with this genre again. Currently playing DQ11, can't wait go get my hands on SMT 5, it's so different from other jrpgs.
I personally feel that it makes sense for SMT protagonists to be silent as they often can go down vastly different paths ideologically, giving a cannon personality would, in my opinion work against the concepts SMT is going for.
I usually hate silent protagonists but I actually feel that the SMT series makes sense to have one. Not only you can roleplay as very different ideology usually but also the themes are often very personal and the game really expects you to make the decisions based on what you believe in and not on good Vs bad. Also in SMT 3 and 5 I have an even less hard time to believe in the silent protagonist because of their inhuman appearance.
It sounds like my wallet is going to hate now. I didn't plan on picking the game immediately, but after seeing your review, guys, I will have to dig deep in my wallet. Awesome video!
This game is a must buy on release. Even newcomers to this series are buying it now whereas before it was a niche game before. I've been patiently waiting for this game for over 7 years!
I started my journey years ago as a child with SMT Imagine (the mmorpg) but never owned consoles so I haven't had any interaction with the series. Last year I dabbled a bit with emulation and played half of SMT4A. I've fallen in love with the game so in August I bought a New 2DS XL and played Strange Journey Redux, then SMT4 then Apocalypse. Eventually I bought Nocturne on Switch and last week I pre-ordered SMT5 as well. Can't wait to play it!
There was an MMO? Man I wish I had gotten into the series when that was still around. I only got into it this past year, started with IV, then played the Nocturne remaster, and I have about 4 more on 3DS to get through. I've been sleeping on this series hard.

(cerberus) They have more updates that the previous server led by aeria games and the pay to win element is removed so the experience could be better, I wonder if the game population is enough to enjoy it though. The game had some really good ideas and ambience but was crippled by huge unbalance between classes and pay to win elements. It was developed by cave not atlus.
try devil survivor overclocked when you have the time, the gameplay is great and the story is as good and dark as in mainline smt games. It may be the hardest game in the series with people to protect in many stages so it can be frustrating though.
@@cedricb2344 I did check both of the Devil Survivor games but I promised myself I'm not starting anything that I can't finish before 5 releases :D I'm not very good with tactical RPG's so those will take a while for me. They're definitely on my list, same with Soul Hackers!
I have SMTV on pre-order with free gifts. Back in PS2 I picked up second hand copy of SMT3 I loved but unable to complete due scratched on CD and kept crashing in Angel type NPC battle and area pass the cursed part. SMT4 I do have it is Grindy with high difficulty but has no random encounters. Can't wait to play eith the demons again when game is released next week.
My first was Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 and it made me Try Shin Megami Tensei IV loved the games now I'm big fan of the Series in general!! You gonna love it

Really well done guys! Delighted to see how far this channel has progressed and hopefully will go even farther. I admittedly don't know very much about SMT but it seems intriguing. Reminds a bit of a more sci-fi take on Dragon Quest.
If you’ve never played a Persona or SMT game, you owe it to yourself. It’s heavy themes with manga visuals. They have tones of dialogue and weighty cut scenes. The systems take a while to wrap your head around at first. They require a huge time commitment, though.
I just wanted to mention something about the “grind” : there are ways to defeat bosses even while under leveled. This game provides a wealth of options, aside from just essence fusions. For example you can give your demons the ability to use items to deflect magical attacks, or even inflict damage with a move they don’t have. I’ve beaten bosses who were 5 levels above me, so it is possible to get through this game without too much grind. It’s all about employing the correct strategy, which is the funnest part for me.
Like I said in the first version: I was going to buy it no matter what after enjoying previous SMTs, but it is nice to see it turned out great. Hope to be able to have money to buy it soon!
Sometimes I will rewatch a review if I feel I've missed something because I wasn't paying enough attention. So watching a re-upload when I've already seen the original video is not that much different to me. 😅
First game I played of any Megaten was Persona. But I found out it was a spin-off and tried playing Devil Survivor Overclocked on my 3DS in 2020. At first I hated it because it was hard but then I started leveling up, figuring out weaknesses and using the demon auction in that game and I wiped the boss I was stuck on out. Then I was hooked. Over this year I played Nocturne, 4, 4 Apocalypse and now I have SMT V pre-ordered. 🙌🏾
Didn't notice any issues in the first upload, mainly heard audio since I was playing MH rise while listening to the review. Anyways, great review and I'm definitely looking forward to playing SMT V!

I've been waiting on this game since it was announced. I've been saving up for it for a while. Adulting is trash, but I have to make time for this one. Great review as always. I'm glad it isn't a tiny 20hr game. The longer the better.

I was planning on finishing shin megami tensei 4 before jumping on 5 but seeing how well it turned out it makes me want to jump straight to it (didn’t have time to watch the first upload before it was reuploaded)
Metroid, SMT, No More Heroes, Monster Hunter, Pokemon Snap, and Cruuuuuusin. Definitely a great year a Nintendo fan. With Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon I feel this is a solid year overall!

So Essences are just demon sources from Strange Journey and Miracles are basically Apps from IV. The Magatsuhi skills are just Magatama from nocturne. So basically they combine Nocturne, Strange Journey and IV/A Mechanics all into one? Yooo this will be lit! Just put them all in there! YES

I have tried three other shin Megami games and this is the first one to hook me. I don't know if it's the better graphics or the gameplay but it finally clicked with me and i am loving it!
Wow man I had a Nintendo ds as a child and really enjoyed dragon quest monsters jocker there just because you could fuse monsters there. SMT series brings it to a fully new level because of the level of technical depths and kind of dark, not childish setting. I think this game might end up being one of my favorite games ever created.
This is one of the rare games series that I have played from the beginning. This is an amazing series of game who put emphasis on history and lore. There are no such thing as taboo in these games and it bring some self evaluation at times especially in the persona series. The main SMT game have always been amazing and full of challenge. Overall I am super glad I got to see it on your channel and will save in order to buy it. Thx for all the video you have been posting!!!!
I agree, I genuinely struggled with some of the morality issues presented in games past. The philosophy of both design and choice really show the player how the dev interprets the world, and that is something special. Those neutral paths lead to some strange places:)
Props for accuracy, best of the SMTV reviews so far. Also you explained a few systems/elements I didn't know about which is good, it sells me more on the game (though I was going to get it anyway).
I just love the way how you guys evaluates the games, not only considering people who already know the series, but also people who have never played before, btw, i'm one of these people who never played before any SMT games (just Tokyo Mirage and Persona), but after watching this i will totally gonna buy it today! Ps: You could try put on the videos a punctuation section about the Story of the games too, because a lot of people play jrpgs for the Story, like if is only battle without any story, a weak story, a fun story, a background story, could be nice to see the evaluation from this angle, sorry if i'm being too noise, lol

I've played the last two Persona Games and have enjoyed them immensely (still hoping Persona 4 Golden makes it to switch) but have always felt I guess, intimidated by the Shin Megami Tensei series. This review has gone a long way at alleviating some of that intimidation. Think this is the most intrigued I've ever been in actually picking up a Shin Megami Tensei game. Thanks!
It's not exactly an SMT game but you should check out devil survivor 1 and 2 on the 3DS if you can. They're my favorite SMT spinoffs. I like them even better than the persona games.

I’m one of the opposites here. I played SMT IV before Persona and frankly didn’t enjoy the school/personal time parts. I’d rather be exploring dungeons than deciding if I should do homework,hang with the bros or go on a date.
It’s basically persona without the visual novel style Bloat. It’s darker and harder with stricter punishments for mistakes. Bosses are much harder and I’d say better then persona games. Persona is better for one seeking deep character development, SMT is better for someone seeking a challenging rpg that’s not stuffed with to much text. SMT is more of a monster battler, unlike persona where demons are more or less used for abilities.
Watching this for second time. Glen I love this review. I am playing Nocturne at the moment getting ready for this game. It along with Metroid Dread are my most anticipated games of the year. So glad to learn that this game is so good. I love that your reviews are so thorough. I love your channel so much. Nintendo needs to know that I like many others have bought so many more games this year as a result of this channel.

The only SMT game I've played is SMT Nocturne (known as Lucifers Call over here in the UK) and I remember it being very fun but very hard. Most recently i finished Person 5 Royal and it's probably my favourite rpg of all time. It's gonna be great to play this portable. Great review too my friend
Nice to get into a chunky triple A title on Switch in time for the holidays, first since Monster Hunter I think? (I enjoyed Metroid Dread very much but it definitely feels like a handheld title)

Definitely will be picking this up, this and Pillars of Eternity 2 are games I have been waiting on forever and with the latter being nowhere in sight I am so glad I get SMT just before the Christmas holidays.

I feel this. I have played SMT 3, 4 and 4 Apocalypse over the last year. Definitely hard to find time. But so worth it in the end. Devil Survivor was also great. Played that one in 2020 so I’m pumped for this one
Another Great Review. i feel some of these big channels only compare the game to others in the franchise and don't review on the game itself. you break down the review into easy to understand portions. story, game play mechanics etc.. very well paced. the only nick pick is there is no frame rate performance analysis section. obviously this is me nick picking and doesn't effect the over all great review video you created. but if you wanna add it to your list i can gladly recommend you what i use to analysis dock switch footage.
I've learned that life is am art. Wether you give it your all or you are doing things with emptiness, it is all art. So instead of comparing and judging. I just like what I like. And my friend the way you guys do Reviews here in Switch up is BEAUTIFUL. I may be watching to watch or watching to buy, I leave each one of these reviews very clear on my opinion of the game
Great review. I don't know that I'll be picking this game up despite it sounding like a winner. I've never been able to get into the SMT series. The games are always so hard and I usually limp my way through RPGs when I do play them; spend a crap-ton of time grinding to overcome my lack of strategy with outrageous stats.
That’s kinda how I play RPGs and I love it. Makes me feel like a shonen anime character on a power journey lol. Suffering defeat, grinding away like there’s no tomorrow and coming back like an absolute alpha. wiping the floor with the boss … just feels right.
If it makes any difference, this one has multiple difficulties that you can change at will (except if you start in hard mode) and the games have been steadily getting way better at their difficulty curves.

I skipped to the end of review just to see the bullet points as I want minimal spoilers. Have had this preordered for months now. Very excited to jump in. Sounds right up my alley, im a sucker for good fun turn based combat. love the challenge and visual style of this too. I have a few shin megami games but I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would be Noctourne but I did have issued with that game mind you. I think this has a good chance of being the best of the bunch but time will tell.

Sometimes I will rewatch a review if I feel I've missed something because I wasn't paying enough attention. So watching a re-upload when I've already seen the original video is not that much different to me. 😅

Like I said before, this is definitely going on the wishlist after seeing this review!
First game I played of any Megaten was Persona. But I found out it was a spin-off and tried playing Devil Survivor Overclocked on my 3DS in 2020. At first I hated it because it was hard but then I started leveling up, figuring out weaknesses and using the demon auction in that game and I wiped the boss I was stuck on out. Then I was hooked. Over this year I played Nocturne, 4, 4 Apocalypse and now I have SMT V pre-ordered. 🙌🏾
Didn't notice any issues in the first upload, mainly heard audio since I was playing MH rise while listening to the review. Anyways, great review and I'm definitely looking forward to playing SMT V!

Best review i’ve seen so far. It’s very clear you guys play the game before reviewing it, and know at least a bit of the game’s history as well. Many people are comparing smt with Persona 5 (???). Even if one originated from the other, they’re different games and reviewing smt with Persona in mind makes no sense!

I've been waiting on this game since it was announced. I've been saving up for it for a while. Adulting is trash, but I have to make time for this one. Great review as always. I'm glad it isn't a tiny 20hr game. The longer the better.

Adulting is trash. And dont ever let someone judge you for enjoying a video game. The only reason someone would get mad about you not wanting to play the "game" of adulting is because theyre trapped in it and are upset that you have a way to step out of it when you please. Just be happy and enjoy something in your life. Im picking this game up depite little performance hiccups. Looks cool as fuuuuuh!

I was planning on finishing shin megami tensei 4 before jumping on 5 but seeing how well it turned out it makes me want to jump straight to it (didn’t have time to watch the first upload before it was reuploaded)

Definitely a great year a Nintendo fan. With Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon I feel this is a solid year overall!

So Essences are just demon sources from Strange Journey and Miracles are basically Apps from IV. The Magatsuhi skills are just Magatama from nocturne. So basically they combine Nocturne, Strange Journey and IV/A Mechanics all into one? Yooo this will be lit! Just put them all in there! YES
The review writing here is second to none. Absolutely brilliant. Never bought a game in this series but after watching this SwitchUp review I’m going to pick it up.
I have tried three other shin Megami games and this is the first one to hook me. I don't know if it's the better graphics or the gameplay but it finally clicked with me and i am loving it!
Definitely need this. Playing JRPG since my childhood, but currently on a tight budget right now. 😵

Wow man I had a Nintendo ds as a child and really enjoyed dragon quest monsters jocker there just because you could fuse monsters there. SMT series brings it to a fully new level because of the level of technical depths and kind of dark, not childish setting. I think this game might end up being one of my favorite games ever created.
This is one of the rare games series that I have played from the beginning. This is an amazing series of game who put emphasis on history and lore. There are no such thing as taboo in these games and it bring some self evaluation at times especially in the persona series. The main SMT game have always been amazing and full of challenge. Overall I am super glad I got to see it on your channel and will save in order to buy it. Thx for all the video you have been posting!!!!
I agree, I genuinely struggled with some of the morality issues presented in games past. The philosophy of both design and choice really show the player how the dev interprets the world, and that is something special. Those neutral paths lead to some strange places:)

I just love the way how you guys evaluates the games, not only considering people who already know the series, but also people who have never played before, btw, i'm one of these people who never played before any SMT games (just Tokyo Mirage and Persona), but after watching this i will totally gonna buy it today!
Ps: You could try put on the videos a punctuation section about the Story of the games too, because a lot of people play jrpgs for the Story, like if is only battle without any story, a weak story, a fun story, a background story, could be nice to see the evaluation from this angle, sorry if i'm being too noise, lol

Anyway this game looks great and I'm glad to add it to my library of jrpgs! I pre-ordered the steelbook version. I love all the games! Atlus start porting the other games to switch!

I've played the last two Persona Games and have enjoyed them immensely (still hoping Persona 4 Golden makes it to switch) but have always felt I guess, intimidated by the Shin Megami Tensei series. This review has gone a long way at alleviating some of that intimidation. Think this is the most intrigued I've ever been in actually picking up a Shin Megami Tensei game. Thanks!
It's not exactly an SMT game but you should check out devil survivor 1 and 2 on the 3DS if you can. They're my favorite SMT spinoffs. I like them even better than the persona games.

This looks good, never played a SMT, but I’m a big Persona fan so think I will pick this up. I was on the fence about it, but you guys have swayed me!!
Please understand it isn’t persona and won’t be like persona save for demons.
I’m one of the opposites here. I played SMT IV before Persona and frankly didn’t enjoy the school/personal time parts. I’d rather be exploring dungeons than deciding if I should do homework,hang with the bros or go on a date.
It’s basically persona without the visual novel style Bloat. It’s darker and harder with stricter punishments for mistakes. Bosses are much harder and I’d say better then persona games. Persona is better for one seeking deep character development, SMT is better for someone seeking a challenging rpg that’s not stuffed with to much text. SMT is more of a monster battler, unlike persona where demons are more or less used for abilities.
Watching this for second time. Glen I love this review. I am playing Nocturne at the moment getting ready for this game. It along with Metroid Dread are my most anticipated games of the year.

The only SMT game I've played is SMT Nocturne (known as Lucifers Call over here in the UK) and I remember it being very fun but very hard. Most recently i finished Person 5 Royal and it's probably my favourite rpg of all time. It's gonna be great to play this portable. Great review too my friend

Another Great Review. i feel some of these big channels only compare the game to others in the franchise and don't review on the game itself. you break down the review into easy to understand portions. story, game play mechanics etc.. very well paced. the only nick pick is there is no frame rate performance analysis section. obviously this is me nick picking and doesn't effect the over all great review video you created. but if you wanna add it to your list i can gladly recommend you what i use to analysis dock switch footage.

I've learned that life is am art. Wether you give it your all or you are doing things with emptiness, it is all art. So instead of comparing and judging. I just like what I like. And my friend the way you guys do Reviews here in Switch up is BEAUTIFUL. I may be watching to watch or watching to buy, I leave each one of these reviews very clear on my opinion of the game
Great review. I don't know that I'll be picking this game up despite it sounding like a winner. I've never been able to get into the SMT series. The games are always so hard and I usually limp my way through RPGs when I do play them; spend a crap-ton of time grinding to overcome my lack of strategy with outrageous stats.
That’s kinda how I play RPGs and I love it. Makes me feel like a shonen anime character on a power journey lol.
Suffering defeat, grinding away like there’s no tomorrow and coming back like an absolute alpha.
wiping the floor with the boss … just feels right.
If it makes any difference, this one has multiple difficulties that you can change at will (except if you start in hard mode) and the games have been steadily getting way better at their difficulty curves.

I skipped to the end of review just to see the bullet points as I want minimal spoilers. Have had this preordered for months now. Very excited to jump in. Sounds right up my alley, im a sucker for good fun turn based combat. love the challenge and visual style of this too. I have a few shin megami games but I guess if I had to pick a favorite it would be Noctourne but I did have issued with that game mind you. I think this has a good chance of being the best of the bunch but time will tell.

Nope, the stories in these games are separate, the only thing you'll get from playing other games in the series is the occasional reference.
