Great review. Never did end up getting this game originally. Adding it to my wishlist. Given the sales offered for the original hitting 60% I doubt we’d have to wait too long to see some sort of sale offered.
I played the original and loved it. But, it was a massive grind at the end and I can't see myself going through all that again even with all the enhancements. That said, for those who haven't played it, highly recommended and so glad its now on other platorms
I own all the DLC from first game and enjoyed my time with it. Both 1st game and DLC were just delisted. This Vengence version is supposed to come with original game, all DLC and new story stuff. Like the Persona 5 Royal. I will probably pick it up on sale. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the review. I agree that the additional scenario could have been a DLC and the quality of life features could have been added to the vanilla version via an update, but I'm still getting this one for my Switch, lol. And the ability to import some of your demons from the vanilla's save file to the new game sounds awesome, imo.
Had this game preordered basically since I was able to. SMTV is for me one of the best JRPGs on the Switch, up there with Dragon Quest 11S. I can't wait to finally get my hands on it!
I'm sure they tried to fix the pop in, because they did on every other platform. But the Switch is now 7 years old and it wasn't especially powerful when it came out either. The results on the hardware are impressive nonetheless
I wasn't hooked into the original and I now have other games higher on my priority list but should this appeal in future, I am glad to have the SwitchUp reviews to refer to. Also, I had been wondering if Glen would be the one to do so as he has been the one to love this game the most given how many videos its featured in, awesome to see he did. Cheers SwitchUp, more content is always appreciated 👍 😊
It's so damn strange I had to get Glen to explain it to me multiple times the other night. I literally couldn't believe what I was hearing hahaha! Mark

I played the original game twice and got two different endings, really enjoyed the game, phenomenal gameplay, the story was a bit barren compared with other SMT games, but the whole game experience was awesome, truly one of the best RPGs on the Switch. I bought the game as soon as it came out and was totally worth the price; now with Vengeance I think I will wait for a discount because as a gamer who played the OG twice the fatigue of doing it again for the new content makes me stop and think twice if I should pay full price, I could have benefit from this being DLC. Thanks SwitchUp for the review.
I am completely new to series but you guys make it sound awesome! I'm going to have to pick it up - the fact you can fuse demons just sold it somehow for me lol.
I feel like Atlus does this every time and it's my fault... it's me, sorry, I will bite everytime. I love SMT and I'll jump at any chance to visit or re-visit those worlds.
It’s like they push the release and early adopters are the beta testers then the improve and rerelease. I’m the same ever since I played IV I had to get all the 3DS games. Still working through Strange Journey which will be an instabuy if they ever remaster. 🤞

They said that this should be the last time they do this, emphasis on "they said". This could have happened with Persona 3 Reload's Episode Aigis being accessible only on a re-release, but that's currently a problem on its own.
I actually never played this games, might be the right time to catch up! By the way, the possibility to save at any point in game, and with the press of a button, can be such a nice upgrade for any game!
I wish you could buy the upgrade instead of a whole new copy. I kind of understand if they added more than a patch. The fusion doesn't make sense to me since the demons never look like the ones you fused
I kinda get that it should be dlc but I’m thinking/hoping the new path is a whole new game more like IV Apocalypse. Atlus tends to do dlc then improve and include the whole package with a new version.

Thanks for the review Glen! SMT V is actually among my favourite games, but I really don't know whether I can muster up the will to play through it again. If this was a DLC offering og players to see the changes via a NG+, I'd get it no questions asked...but like this, I'd rather wait for a sale. If I get it at all 😅
I bought and enjoyed SMT V when it first launched, but never finished the story. I think not having the ability to save at any time was one of the reasons for that, so I plan to give it another go with the updated version. I'm not thrilled about having to pay full price when I already own a significant portion of the content, but it is what it is I guess. Appreciate the review.
Returning to the save point is a button press away? I don't see why that was a drag for you. If getting back to where you were was a problem, you had Estoma so you can avoid battles.
Performance is pretty much the bare minimum acceptable for me. The art design carries it through. The game looks and runs phenomenal on more powerful platforms though, so unless you're tied to Switch and play on the big Tele... Get it there
I'm sure the game will be awesome because base SMTV already is a great game. But no way in hell I'm buying it for full price when I already have the deluxe version of the base game. When it's 50% off in a couple of years I'll get it.
I remember really enjoying this. I purchased it as a fan of persona and wasn't disappointed. Paid I think 80 dollars for a deluxe edition. I would have paid 60 for a dlc addition to my new game. I enjoyed it that much. But to re release it and make the original game obsolete a few years after release is insane. I can't support something like that.
Nice one Glen! Not played this one yet, but it IS very much on my list. Glad I never bought the first iteration of the game, now I can get the definitive edition. Coys!
First off nice comparison of the previous and new game! Gave a proper overview of what to expect, many thanks! Hope they include that new save function on the fly for all the customers that bought the original game. Rather than keeping that locked to the new version. Buying the new game should be based the merit of the content.
Regarding what you said at the end, Atlus usually release a game then re-release an updated version at full price. They most likely could do a upgrade path but refuse to. I got the original on sale and was sold on this the moment I saw the reveal, I will play it on another platform for better performance.
I have only ever played Persona 5 Royal and SMT IV on 3DS, but I bought the steelbook version of this, and then Persona 3 and 4 Golden. I watched someone review it and the way they spoke about the game just absolutely sold it to me, and this review just sealed the deal! Everyone’s comments on this video and the other review were filled with so much excitement it got me hype to dive in and play as many Altus games as possible.
I showed my support day-one when the original version came out. This release is downright scummy. Will be picking it up second hand for no more than 20 bucks when I can. F*ck Atlus. Pissing away the good will of fans for a franchise that needs every bit of it.
They've always done this though, and fans still buy every single one. Idk what good will you're talking about, cos fans have been dealing with this since the beginning.
I feel it was worth it to me to play the original three years when it came out. I'm not ready to jump back into another 100 hour-ish SMT game, but I'm glad to see an enhanced version for those who passed on the original.
I've never played a SMT game before but I love P4 and 5 so i thought I'd give this a shot. I have the steelbook coming my way for $35. I think I got a decent deal.
Can't wait to play, but I'll wait for a sale. I already played the original, and I'm not paying full price for what is basically 2 games and only playing 1 of them.
Been watching the channel daily lately im loving the consistency of uploads for you guys much love ❤ that being said IM DEFINITELY PICKING THIS UP, Been super hyped as soon as i found out i can finally grab a physical copy of one of the best RPGS on switch, Granted they couldve made it DLC but Atlus always adds something to make their games worth the extra buy -
Hoping they actually did listen to community feedback, and fixed actual problems the community had (like the story), because seriously, the price is SO not worth it if they didn't even do that. And of course, hopefully the added content is of considerable length (just my thoughts before I watch the video lol)
Is still have no clue why they haven't offered a way to purchase it as a DLC for the original game's owners! I have completed the game on Switch, spent over 100h on it, but now, I have to purchase an entirely new game and lose all my progress in the process? After almost purchasing it, it is going to be a pass for me.
What a great review. Thanks so much for sharing. Glen, you talked about maybe not replaying the whole game. I don't recall if Mark gave it a go or not. Will he dive in with this updated version?
If I understand correctlu we didn't have an opportunity to load save state from vanilla version and continue in vengeance version? I'm a few hours in the first release and don't want to play once again from the start.
SUCH a cool looking game, love the character designs... For whatever reason (money?) I've not picked this up yet, but there's never been a better time!
Just got this game for like $35 after skipping the original. I never tried this series before, but then I saw the reduced price, so why not. On a side note regarding releasing an expanded game, remember when the Monster Hunter games would release the Ultimate versions? 😅
I 100% the last game and enjoyed it in spite of the flaws. Still on the fence about double dipping for this, even if there's an entire new story with it...
I can't justify buying the game on Switch again. I don't regret the purchase of the original full game + DLC as those were some pretty damn fun 100h I put on it but I'd rather finding it on discount on something like Steam for PC now than buying essentially the same game again on Switch.
I havent 100% the original release, and I bought all the DLC to boot. So I will pick this up when it goes on a steep sale instead. I will completely finish the base game before deciding if I want more by buying the rerelease. It does feel bad essentially double dipping for the same game or feeling like you bought an early access copy, but I guess this is standard Atlus practice.
It really sucks when Atlus does this because before the og version released, I was like “ah why not, I’ll fork over the $60” only to find out 3 years later that it’ll be replaced and DELISTED from the Eshop with Vengeance (which Atlus probably intentionally didn’t tell anyone about) priced at 60 effing dollars (70 for deluxe edition) like all “triple AAA games” these days. At that point, I just thought if I’m going to buy and play it, then I’ll just go with the steam version (I don’t have the best memory when it comes to when I stopped and started playing a RPG, especially JRPGs, and achievements/trophies really help in that regard imo) It’s like Atlus doesn’t understand the concept of releasing a dlc expansion by itself instead of doing this with SMT V…smh
there are very few games i really love and replay many many times and smt v is one of those, so a repurchase makes sense for me, as I'll gladly squeeze another 200 hours out of it. but totally understand why many others wouldn't want to drop another $60
I played like 60 to 70 percent and never finished. Is it worth my time starting over with all the new stuff? Haven't watched vid yet. Keep up good work lads your reviews are always a delight
Not really. This has all the original content, plus the new story and new QOL features....it's £5 cheaper I guess, but its worth the extra money for the improvements.
Two reasons why they didn’t offer it as DLC. 1) Atlus is one of the most anti-consumer developers in the industry. 2) They pulled the vanilla version from the eShop, the day before the game released. Which ties back to reason #1.
I finally got a physical copy of the base version about a week ago. Started it, got to the first major boss at Tokyo tower. At that point decided I liked the game and wanted any dlc to have a complete experience. Then, i found this video 🤬....so now ive unnecessarily bought SMTV twice.
M this pirate was never a fan of the hole silent protagonist trop😩 never comprehended how or why such a thing was popular enough to be used as often as it has been in games. Especially in games that had voice acting and only the main protagonist was silent. ( why I never liked or enjoyed the Zelda games as I hated the silent protagonist thing) Played abut 7 hours of the main SMT5 so I never finished it, may look into getting this as the gameplay mechanics and setting seemed interesting and intriguing, just not sure the game is worth full price🤔 As always I appreciate the video and coverage ❤ Dose SMT vengeance included any of the DLC that you had to buy for the original game? Or do you have to buy it again for this new version of the game?
Excluding the Mitama paid DLC the Artemis, Cleopatra, Mephisto, and Demi-fiend paid DLC for the original version are included in this new version. Though two new demons are paid DLC which are Konohana Sakuya and Dagda.
@@LinkSergilBelmont Mm appreciate the response and clarification. Sad the Mitama DLC is not included 👻 guess I’ll just buy it again as I have some credits
This game looks amazing and Im definitely adding it to my wishlist. Great job once again yall! I was just wondering in yalls opinion, what would be the best all around pokemon game to buy for the switch or which one should I start with? I have been dying to buy a pokemon game for it I just want to make sure to get the one Im looking for.
Smt vengeance is by far the best Pokemon game, it might sit at about 130 less Pokemon than shield/sword but the Pokemon are all quality/handpicked and good.
For a replay of mostly the same game I’ll wait for a sale. A DLC would have a been better strategy in terms of customers satisfaction and also instant cash.
Honestly, this game is quite stressful with the map system, especially when in Demon Castle stage. And I'm not gonna let that happen again in my life 😂😂😂
On one hand I hate that it isnt just a dlc On the other, I cant wait to replay this S tier game, and a different playthrough with the new parts as well Lovely
the bigger issue is the original becoming harder to obtain and save anywhere means the game is weakening its own design for broader appeal, the game DIDN'T need that really i would still say play original over it

You can play one story now and the other over a year later. Doesn't need to be back to back :)
Would need at least 2 years in between!
Didn't beat it on switch but going to give the Xbox series X version a go😉
It really sucks when Atlus does this because before the og version released, I was like “ah why not, I’ll fork over the $60” only to find out 3 years later that it’ll be replaced and DELISTED from the Eshop with Vengeance (which Atlus probably intentionally didn’t tell anyone about) priced at 60 effing dollars (70 for deluxe edition) like all “triple AAA games” these days.
I just wish it was dlc for switch, otherwise I'll just buy on ps5 or pc now
I been wanting Sin Megami since like 22, now with this new one I want it twice as bad lmaooooo
there are very few games i really love and replay many many times and smt v is one of those, so a repurchase makes sense for me, as I'll gladly squeeze another 200 hours out of it. but totally understand why many others wouldn't want to drop another $60
How long is the second story? I havent played the original version yet so maybe i'll just get this and sell the other one.
I think 80 hours more or less.
@@LinkSergilBelmont thx
I played like 60 to 70 percent and never finished. Is it worth my time starting over with all the new stuff? Haven't watched vid yet. Keep up good work lads your reviews are always a delight
I loved the original but charging full price for essentially dlc to switch owners feels dirty.
is there an advantage owning the original version on switch??
Not really. This has all the original content, plus the new story and new QOL features....it's £5 cheaper I guess, but its worth the extra money for the improvements.
Honestly I never did get around to playing the first one so I might pick up this one eventually
Two reasons why they didn’t offer it as DLC.
1) Atlus is one of the most anti-consumer developers in the industry.
2) They pulled the vanilla version from the eShop, the day before the game released. Which ties back to reason #1.
Base game is still in my back log. SMT 2 is still in my 3DS backlog.
*So the DLC they told us to download for SMT5 does it transfer to SMT5V or do we have to download again?*
The JP voice free DLC and the demon paid DLC (Artemis, Cleopatra, Mephisto, Demi-fiend) except the Mitama paid DLC are included in SMTV: Vengeance.
@@LinkSergilBelmont thanks, didnt want to make a mistake and buy
I'm still working on the original and I will just complete that for now lol
I picked this game up yesterday and I’m hoping that the “upgrades” are worth the full price
I finally got a physical copy of the base version about a week ago. Started it, got to the first major boss at Tokyo tower. At that point decided I liked the game and wanted any dlc to have a complete experience. Then, i found this video 🤬....so now ive unnecessarily bought SMTV twice.
Amazing game, played through the original release numerous times
I feel sorry for all who already have the base game and have to buy whole package to get it all.
I will consider to buy on other platforms on offer, cause switch i already got SMT5 + DLC
Getting it on my PS5 and Series X
M this pirate was never a fan of the hole silent protagonist trop😩 never comprehended how or why such a thing was popular enough to be used as often as it has been in games. Especially in games that had voice acting and only the main protagonist was silent. ( why I never liked or enjoyed the Zelda games as I hated the silent protagonist thing)
Played abut 7 hours of the main SMT5 so I never finished it, may look into getting this as the gameplay mechanics and setting seemed interesting and intriguing, just not sure the game is worth full price🤔
As always I appreciate the video and coverage ❤
Dose SMT vengeance included any of the DLC that you had to buy for the original game? Or do you have to buy it again for this new version of the game?
Excluding the Mitama paid DLC the Artemis, Cleopatra, Mephisto, and Demi-fiend paid DLC for the original version are included in this new version.
Though two new demons are paid DLC which are Konohana Sakuya and Dagda.

Mm appreciate the response and clarification.
I love the game but I'm not buying it again for full price.
How long is the new story ? The same as the original game ?
3x the length if you include godborn story
The FPS is running better than SMT5?
yess
after this i hope they remake 1&2 , and 4 also but i played a lot of 4 already
For a replay of mostly the same game I’ll wait for a sale. A DLC would have a been better strategy in terms of customers satisfaction and also instant cash.
Not sure there is enough to rebuy it on the switch……but might buy it for my PS5!
so if I didn't play the first one I can ignore it and play directly just this new edition right?
Yes this is the fleshed out version
Honestly, this game is quite stressful with the map system, especially when in Demon Castle stage. And I'm not gonna let that happen again in my life 😂😂😂
On one hand I hate that it isnt just a dlc
On the other, I cant wait to replay this S tier game, and a different playthrough with the new parts as well
Lovely
Does this version include all the dlc from the base game’s release like Demi fiend?
Yes it's supposed to according to their site
some dlc still dlc like magatamas cause gotta nickle and dime Atlus
I definitely think the point of the new release is to make the game multiplatform
Love you guys!
Just wish atlus would remake digital devil sagas 1 and 2 they were awesome shin megami tensai games
the bigger issue is the original becoming harder to obtain and save anywhere means the game is weakening its own design for broader appeal, the game DIDN'T need that
really i would still say play original over it
