@@khendrix1645 being an automotive technician to me would be worth it. It is difficult to learn, but once you do it becomes second nature. It really comes down to the ability to problem solve and being able to afford tools. They’re very expensive, but you can find lots of videos on TH-cam about box set ups and tool carts and entry level tools to high end tools. If being an automotive technician is your dream, you should follow it though. It may be difficult at first, but if you truly love it then you’ll do fine. I pray for your success and wish you the best of luck!
I totally didn’t see your comment until now. There are a lot of pros and cons to being a mechanic and I decided I didn’t want to do it the rest of my life. The Pros are that you don’t really need any education to do so, although your first few years will probably being spent doing very basic maintenance ( Lube tech ) / You don’t really have to ever deal with customers which is a positive ( except occasional test drives with them to confirm issues they’re having ) / Pay can be pretty good, especially for not much schooling required. As for the cons: It is really hard on your body and as you get older, it’ll get tougher. / tools are very expensive but most shops have tool trucks that come by that offer weekly payments / most auto places pay on production like I explained in the video, which can be frustrating. It can lead to very inconsistent paychecks and when it’s slow, you’re kinda screwed / poor benefits and poor treatment from management ( usually ): most dealerships treat their employees like crap but there could be a lot of good ones out there. I personally quit this profession and won’t be going back. I wanted to save my body for when I’m older so I decided to get out. I honestly would consider continuing your education and see where you feel is the best fit for you. I decided to be a tech right off the bat and didn’t do much schooling. So now at 35 years old, I don’t really have an education to fall back on. Wish I would’ve stayed in school when I was younger.

This was refreshing. I ended up injuring my back during college for automotive and sadly had to turn down a job opportunity at Toyota. I sadly can’t work professionally for automotive companies anymore, but that was my passion. Short lived, but was something I had really enjoyed. I’m no expert, and I’m no master technician lol. I didn’t know anything before college, but grateful for the knowledge I gathered when there. It helps knowing these things and having these tools so when my own stuff breaks I can work on it lol. But overall great video and I just subscribed, keep up the great work!

Nice video! I used to work on my back. After getting a small lift put into my garage, it's a night and day difference. Much less fatigue, all repairs are quicker. That lift is one of the best things I've ever spent money on.

I enjoyed Toyota because they are engineered very well and mechanic friendly, but you’re right, we get lifted Tacoma and Tundras all the time. As of July 13th of this year, I am officially out of the tech world. Best change I ever made.

@@pugmasterben No, it isn't. I was a tech for 23 years. Lube techs are offered the same rate today as I was back then. You'll spend the cost of a house on tools, be offered no pension, no decent insurance of any kind, while working the most thankless job there is. Listen to what I'm telling you. A house plumber will make twice as much money as you ever will as an auto mechanic.

I also work a job where I am on my feet and walking all the time, so there are days when I get home and just want to veg on the couch. I may have fallen asleep a time or two as well haha. Thanks Mark! Usually we watch a show or 2 and then just chill on the couch until bed ( on work nights ). But same here, I’ll usually play a game and Bryn will read until bed time. HelloFresh is not bad at all and makes it pretty easy. Portions can be a little small for some meals but they all taste great

HAHAHA! You could add a 3” lift to the XREAS suspension. Maybe some beefier wheels and tires? Even the roof mounted baskets we install look pretty cool and functional too
Interesting, we haven’t had many issues with our millimeter wave sensors on ours. We did have a recall because of possible water intrusion, but no real issues.
Glad you're out of the auto industry, brother. I sell Subarus and my good friend is a factory rep for Toyota out here in Northern California. Flat rate is tough and all the BS you have to put up with at a new car dealership makes me want to leave the industry. Hopefully, sometime this year.
I actually don’t work there anymore! I left about 3 months ago after 5 years. Got out of the technician life and now I do Digital Marketing! I do miss parts of it though and all my co-workers 👍🏻
Thanks Harry! No we have not. Always gotta make sure the battery is disconnected before removing and Toyota supplies us with a “short” to install in the airbag circuit before doing anything on it.

Well, I do know of one. Toyotas have a Yaw rate sensor which basically determines the angle ( side to side ) at which the car is at, and we had a co-worker unbolt the sensor and rotate it in his hand while it was still connected and all the air bags went off because the car thought it was upside down LOL
Damn im a toyota lube tech and i feel like im watching one of our master/expert techs all day - hopefully going to school to get certified sometime in January.
My best advice is to do as many Toyota University Modules as possible. Start getting your ASE's ( your Toyota should cover paying for them ) and keep pushing your team lead / foreman / service manager to send you to the electrical class to get certified. I wish you luck my friend.

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I actually am not a mechanic anymore as of July, 2021. Honestly, I would say no, don’t get into this industry. Technicians are under appreciated, the job can physically beat you up, and the pay system is not very rewarding or consistent. If I were you, if it’s of any interest, I’d take some form of computer science class.

I have an annoying steering wheel nibble between 50-73 MPH, after balance and rotating (OEM tires and wheels also) it still doesn’t seem to go away. Any suggestions , any experiences with this? Of course! All music I use is provided by the TH-cam Audio library. So if you use TH-cam studio on your desktop, at the bottom left, there is a tab called audio library that is all copyright free music that TH-cam provides. There is actually a lot of good stuff there.
Hey Dan what’s up, I got a quick question for you. I’m pretty young (22yrs) old and been thinking about going into automotive. Would you recommend it and does it pay good in the long run ?
The pay can be pretty good but that could take quite awhile to get to that kind of pay. If you’re completely new, dealers will keep you as a low payed lube tech for quite awhile, before you become an apprentice. Very minimal schooling needed to be a tech, so that’s good. The ability to do all your own maintenance on your vehicles will save you quite a bit of money. It is really satisfying to fix a car. You’ll have to buy your own tools which are extremely expensive, and you really never stop collecting. It’s fun to buy but really adds up money wise. Benefits at dealers usually aren’t very good and most dealers treat their employees poorly. Doing this job will really beat up your body too. There are quite a bit of pros and cons to it, as with any job but I honestly would not recommend it. If I had the chance, I would go to school and figure something else out. As of July, I actually got out of the tech side and now I do marketing for a chain of automotive stores. You can hit me up on Discord if you want any more info.
It does get very repetitive and we do the same work a lot but, the way that we get paid, it’s a good thing. The faster I can get work done, the more I get paid. The pay is pretty darn good as well, especially since you don’t need a college education to do it

Automotive shops are incredibly loud, and if you talk to any older mechanics, most will experience some hearing loss. Impact guns (to remove wheels and other components) are incredibly loud. Hearing protection is a must but also hard to use, because you need to listen to a lot of things. If you have sensitive hearing, this job will be very tough. And yes, being a mechanic is pretty stressful because pay is inconsistent, the work is inconsistent, and there are so many variables to repairing a car (things breaking while you’re working on them, parts orders the wrong part, the service advisor makes a mistake). I left Toyota in July of 2021 and it was the best thing I ever did. I now work for an automotive software company. For workouts, I recommend a lot of stretching.

About 10-15 years roughly and I am currently out of the industry as of a year ago. It’s stressful, pay can be good but paychecks can drastically vary when you’re flat rate, injuries are very common, dealerships don’t treat their employees that well usually, tools are ungodly expensive, warranty work can suck badly, benefits and time off aren’t good unless you’ve been there 10+ years, it will beat you up and make you very tired over time, and for some reason, there’s ALWAYS drama at a dealership. BUT there are pros: it requires minimal education, most dealers will send you to manufacture training for free if they see value in you, Toyota schedule is one of the best I ever worked ( 4x10 hour days ), pay can be very good for needing no college degree but you gotta know how to hustle and do good work, don’t have to deal with customers besides occasional test drives to verify complaints from customers, Toyotas are hands down the best cars to work on - best engineering by a long shot for the most part, meet a lot of great people in the shop. My advice would be that depending on experience, try to go in as a line tech, I’ve seen so many people get burnt out on the lube rack, just waiting for their turn to move up. Some wait 5+ years of doing oil / rotates, all day everyday. If you have no experience, I would start somewhere else where you can round your skills out a little more. I started out at a Firestone, where I got to to oil changes, brakes, alignments, tires; all as a new tech. Then a couple years down the road, I moved to a dealer as a line tech and bypassed the awful dealership lube tech job. Hope that helps
BRO, stupidest design in all of history. You gotta lower down the tank a little bit, use 2 pocket screw drivers to pop the clip back, then 2 pry bars to pop it loose. Trying to get the damn thing back on was the hardest part. Need a good amount of sil-glide and have the clips in the perfect spot to get it on. I ended up doing so many of the Tacomas, so annoying.
Most dealerships will supply the techs with gloves and you are at the mercy of the parts department for what brand / kind they are. Usually just some cheap latex gloves.
Hey! It’s a torque stick. When attached to a 1/2” impact gun, it will limit the torque to 80ft lbs so you don’t over-torque the lug nuts. That particular one is for 21mm lug nuts. Here is a kit for a ton of different sizes: amzn.to/3nTCtlt Toyotas only use 21mm and 22mm, so that’s all I used.
That’s not really much information to go off of. It only started happening when you replaced the alternator? Have you tried running the motor without the drive belt for a moment and seeing if the noise stops? What kind of noise?
I have 2012 Toyota Camry LE and my car is shuddering and bogging it bogs around 25 miles per hour shudders at 40 well I think it’s the torque converter and the warranty won’t cover it is this a recurring problem if I get it repaired will it cause trouble again
Yes, the torque converter shudder is very common for the Camry’s and RAV4’s. Did you check with a Toyota dealer to see if it’s covered? It’s under a longer warranty then the factory one so I would check first. The bogging your experiencing isn’t one of the symptoms of the torque converter service campaign. It’s only the shudder on light acceleration from 30-45mph. And yes, the new torque converter we put in is updated and it should not happen again.
It seems like a fun, interactive job. I've seen a ton of people who work in the industry talk about injuries and whatnot; why so? It seems to me the heaviest thing you lifted was the tires, which, yeah, are quite heavy; but aside from that? I don't understand. I don't know if the pay is good or not, but im just getting sadder knowing that this industry is changing and it's not very rewarding in the first place, especially when it's becoming more and more complex by each decade. Also, eating just that for lunch? Seems so little for such a big guy.
Everything is heavy in this industry; suspension components like struts / control arms / leaf springs, also other components like intake manifolds / heads / exhaust components. Everything you work on puts you at a very awkward angles like leaning over a hood is horrible for your back or trying to get under the dash of a car. Standing on concrete for 10 hours a day is brutal on your knees and feet. Injury is extremely common in this industry. Plus you are constantly tightening things which requires quite a lot of different muscles. Not to mention being under a lift when you’re tall, causing you to squat or bend your body to fit. As of a year ago, I left this industry because I wanted to preserve my body as a main reason. The work is stressful, pay can be widely vary because you’re paid by production, even though the base pay is good. Benefits are not good, time off is not good, injuries, stressful work, messy job, tiring, and dealerships generally don’t treat their employees well either. Most techs don’t retire in their 60’s, and their absolutely beat up by then. I did enjoy my time being a tech a learned A LOT, but didn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing it. As for food, I generally worked more with a little less food, just stayed very hydrated. Then grub pretty hard after work. Hope that explains it

I also work a job where I am on my feet and walking all the time, so there are days when I get home and just want to veg on the couch. I may have fallen asleep a time or two as well haha. Hello Fresh is also here in Canada where I live, and depending on price, I may have to try it. Sometimes I need inspiration.
Thanks Mark! Usually we watch a show or 2 and then just chill on the couch until bed ( on work nights ). But same here, I’ll usually play a game and Bryn will read until bed time. HelloFresh is not bad at all and makes it pretty easy. Portions can be a little small for some meals but they all taste great

At Nissan we had huge issue with radar sensor just slamming on breaks randomly all we could do was clean them up and in some cases replace unit
Interesting, we haven’t had many issues with our millimeter wave sensors on ours. We did have a recall because of possible water intrusion, but no real issues.
Glad you're out of the auto industry, brother. I sell Subarus and my good friend is a factory rep for Toyota out here in Northern California. Flat rate is tough and all the BS you have to put up with at a new car dealership makes me want to leave the industry. Hopefully, sometime this year.

Thanks Harry! No we have not. Always gotta make sure the battery is disconnected before removing and Toyota supplies us with a “short” to install in the airbag circuit before doing anything on it.

Well, I do know of one. Toyotas have a Yaw rate sensor which basically determines the angle ( side to side ) at which the car is at, and we had a co-worker unbolt the sensor and rotate it in his hand while it was still connected and all the air bags went off because the car thought it was upside down LOL

Damn im a toyota lube tech and i feel like im watching one of our master/expert techs all day - hopefully going to school to get certified sometime in January.
My best advice is to do as many Toyota University Modules as possible. Start getting your ASE's ( your Toyota should cover paying for them ) and keep pushing your team lead / foreman / service manager to send you to the electrical class to get certified. I wish you luck my friend.

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I actually am not a mechanic anymore as of July, 2021. Honestly, I would say no, don’t get into this industry. Technicians are under appreciated, the job can physically beat you up, and the pay system is not very rewarding or consistent. If I were you, if it’s of any interest, I’d take some form of computer science class.

Awesome content! Ty! I own 21 4Runner rear wheel drive, currently at 54K miles. I have owned since 44K miles. I have an annoying steering wheel nibble between 50-73 MPH, after balance and rotating (OEM tires and wheels also) it still doesn’t seem to go away. Any suggestions , any experiences with this? Of course! All music I use is provided by the TH-cam Audio library. So if you use TH-cam studio on your desktop, at the bottom left, there is a tab called audio library that is all copyright free music that TH-cam provides. There is actually a lot of good stuff there.

Hey Dan what’s up, I got a quick question for you. I’m pretty young (22yrs) old and been thinking about going into automotive. Would you recommend it and does it pay good in the long run ?
The pay can be pretty good but that could take quite awhile to get to that kind of pay. If you’re completely new, dealers will keep you as a low payed lube tech for quite awhile, before you become an apprentice. Very minimal schooling needed to be a tech, so that’s good. The ability to do all your own maintenance on your vehicles will save you quite a bit of money. It is really satisfying to fix a car.
You’ll have to buy your own tools which are extremely expensive, and you really never stop collecting. It’s fun to buy but really adds up money wise. Benefits at dealers usually aren’t very good and most dealers treat their employees poorly. Doing this job will really beat up your body too.
There are quite a bit of pros and cons to it, as with any job but I honestly would not recommend it. If I had the chance, I would go to school and figure something else out.
As of July, I actually got out of the tech side and now I do marketing for a chain of automotive stores.

Do you get bored while working on cars? I just wanted to know because if you aren't bored then thats one hell of a job XD depending on pay of course.
It does get very repetitive and we do the same work a lot but, the way that we get paid, it’s a good thing. The faster I can get work done, the more I get paid. The pay is pretty darn good as well, especially since you don’t need a college education to do it

Can you tell if the work place is loud or often super stressful? What type of atmosphere different workshops usually have? Automotive shops are incredibly loud, and if you talk to any older mechanics, most will experience some hearing loss. Impact guns (to remove wheels and other components) are incredibly loud. Hearing protection is a must but also hard to use, because you need to listen to a lot of things. If you have sensitive hearing, this job will be very tough.
And yes, being a mechanic is pretty stressful because pay is inconsistent, the work is inconsistent, and there are so many variables to repairing a car (things breaking while you’re working on them, parts orders the wrong part, the service advisor makes a mistake).
I left Toyota in July of 2021 and it was the best thing I ever did. I now work for an automotive software company.
For workouts, I recommend a lot of stretching.

Hey Dan quick question how long were you the mechanic trade and do you have any advice for some one who is new to the trade and have the possibility of working a Toyota dealer thanks.
About 10-15 years roughly and I am currently out of the industry as of a year ago. It’s stressful, pay can be good but paychecks can drastically vary when you’re flat rate, injuries are very common, dealerships don’t treat their employees that well usually, tools are ungodly expensive, warranty work can suck badly, benefits and time off aren’t good unless you’ve been there 10+ years, it will beat you up and make you very tired over time, and for some reason, there’s ALWAYS drama at a dealership.
BUT there are pros: it requires minimal education, most dealers will send you to manufacture training for free if they see value in you, Toyota schedule is one of the best I ever worked ( 4x10 hour days ), pay can be very good for needing no college degree but you gotta know how to hustle and do good work, don’t have to deal with customers besides occasional test drives to verify complaints from customers, Toyotas are hands down the best cars to work on - best engineering by a long shot for the most part, meet a lot of great people in the shop.
My advice would be that depending on experience, try to go in as a line tech, I’ve seen so many people get burnt out on the lube rack, just waiting for their turn to move up. Some wait 5+ years of doing oil / rotates, all day everyday. If you have no experience, I would start somewhere else where you can round your skills out a little more. I started out at a Firestone, where I got to to oil changes, brakes, alignments, tires; all as a new tech. Then a couple years down the road, I moved to a dealer as a line tech and bypassed the awful dealership lube tech job.

BRO, stupidest design in all of history. You gotta lower down the tank a little bit, use 2 pocket screw drivers to pop the clip back, then 2 pry bars to pop it loose. Trying to get the damn thing back on was the hardest part. Need a good amount of sil-glide and have the clips in the perfect spot to get it on. I ended up doing so many of the Tacomas, so annoying.

Most dealerships will supply the techs with gloves and you are at the mercy of the parts department for what brand / kind they are. Usually just some cheap latex gloves.

What is that tool (orange looking) next to your hammers on your tool cart? Is it for lug nuts? If it's for lugs, where do you find them?
Hey! It’s a torque stick. When attached to a 1/2” impact gun, it will limit the torque to 80ft lbs so you don’t over-torque the lug nuts. That particular one is for 21mm lug nuts. Here is a kit for a ton of different sizes:

That’s not really much information to go off of. It only started happening when you replaced the alternator? Have you tried running the motor without the drive belt for a moment and seeing if the noise stops? What kind of noise?

I have 2012 Toyota Camry LE and my car is shuddering and bogging it bogs around 25 miles per hour shudders at 40 well I think it’s the torque converter and the warranty won’t cover it is this a recurring problem if I get it repaired will it cause trouble again
Yes, the torque converter shudder is very common for the Camry’s and RAV4’s. Did you check with a Toyota dealer to see if it’s covered? It’s under a longer warranty then the factory one so I would check first.
The bogging your experiencing isn’t one of the symptoms of the torque converter service campaign. It’s only the shudder on light acceleration from 30-45mph. And yes, the new torque converter we put in is updated and it should not happen again.

It seems like a fun, interactive job.
I've seen a ton of people who work in the industry talk about injuries and whatnot; why so?
It seems to me the heaviest thing you lifted was the tires, which, yeah, are quite heavy; but aside from that? I don't understand.
I don't know if the pay is good or not, but im just getting sadder knowing that this industry is changing and it's not very rewarding in the first place, especially when it's becoming more and more complex by each decade.
Also, eating just that for lunch? Seems so little for such a big guy.
Everything is heavy in this industry; suspension components like struts / control arms / leaf springs, also other components like intake manifolds / heads / exhaust components. Everything you work on puts you at a very awkward angles like leaning over a hood is horrible for your back or trying to get under the dash of a car. Standing on concrete for 10 hours a day is brutal on your knees and feet. Injury is extremely common in this industry. Plus you are constantly tightening things which requires quite a lot of different muscles. Not to mention being under a lift when you’re tall, causing you to squat or bend your body to fit.
As of a year ago, I left this industry because I wanted to preserve my body as a main reason. The work is stressful, pay can be widely vary because you’re paid by production, even though the base pay is good. Benefits are not good, time off is not good, injuries, stressful work, messy job, tiring, and dealerships generally don’t treat their employees well either. Most techs don’t retire in their 60’s, and their absolutely beat up by then.
I did enjoy my time being a tech a learned A LOT, but didn’t want to spend the rest of my life doing it.
As for food, I generally worked more with a little less food, just stayed very hydrated. Then grub pretty hard after work.
