Sam Rockwell should have received an Oscar. He was the best and most versirtile actor in the cast. Look at his filmography.
It's based off sole performance, not versatility in multiple. Unfortunate in some cases, Rockwell is amazing...but Duncan has had varied roles, too.
No matter how many times I see this movie, I still cry like a baby every single time. Such an extraordinary story though🧡

On the way to his execution John is comforting the guards with a sweet story of his dream. This movie breaks me every time. Thanks for your reaction.
John wanted to die. He was emotionally and psychologically tired, in pain, and not afraid to die. It might feel wrong, and in that setting it was, but not for Coffey. His comment about Del told how he felt from early on, "He out of it now, though. He the lucky one. No matter how it happened, Del the lucky one."

Brutal (David Morse) is an underrated actor.
Everyone loves Paul Edgecomb and John Coffey, and they are awesome...but, tbh, my favorite GM character is Brutal - he's a gem! Everyone needs a best friend like him. Morse is a helluva actor. So is the guy who played Del.
I wonder if anyone had ever hugged John with the love and empathy that Melinda had for him when she hugged him.
Michael Clarke Duncan was 6’5” the same height as David Morse (Brutal) but with risers and camera angles he appeared much taller.
I love that Melinda gave John the medallion after he healed her. St. Christopher is a patron saint... he offered protection to travelers against death on a journey. Many churches placed images or statues of him, usually opposite the south door, so he could be easily seen. He is usually depicted as a giant, with a child on his shoulder and a sheperd's staff in one hand, leading the lambs to the light... fits John Coffey.
Yep, The Green Mile is a movie that is a must watch and then you will never want to relive that sorrow again. It was a brilliant idea to NOT tell what the prisoners were on death row for so the audience could sympathize with them more.
Why did you watch that if it was going to be hard for you?
Although in the book they did tell.
The interesting thing is that except for "Wild Bill," and of course Coffey who was entirely innocent (not just of the crime he was convicted for), everyone who was there was there for a one-off offense that on a different day, in a different mood, they might never have committed. Del's crime was the worst, but the way he's described in the written story it's like he had only that one awful thing in him and then he lost all capacity for that sort of behavior afterwards.
I think it's mostly fantasy on King's part particularly with Del's sort of crime. When it involves mistreating women and children, men are happy to repeat-offend and frequently they will escalate it, too. Look at any mass shooter's background and you will find a laundry list of examples. He hurt animals... he was defiant to teachers... he beat up his little brother... he flashed girls on the playground... Every time he does something it's dismissed with "boys will be boys" or "you know how he is," until he finally gets so bad no one can ignore it anymore.
Although King wasn't totally dishonest. A whole lot of people have wound up on death row for a homicide in a situation that just got out of hand, no obvious premeditation. The logic is well, they had a gun so clearly they were OK with the idea of murder when really, the perp might have only intended to scare someone into submission or to protect himself from possible retaliation in the moment and didn't really think he'd actually use that gun on someone. I don't think politicians put a lot of thought into why they write laws. They just want to be popular and powerful.

It's not that we want to see you cry, it's just that it is such an amazing movie - 10/10.
You’re the only reactor I’ve seen that’s included the scene where the Native American man is talking to Tom Hanks about what Heaven might look like, just before his execution. I always thought that was one of the most emotional scenes (although this movie has multiple emotional scenes 😂)
Michael Clarke Duncan did such an incredible job with this role. Having read the Stephen King book(s) first, I was curious as to how he would do in this role, and quite honestly no one else could have pulled it off. I personally felt he should have won the Oscar for this performance among all the nominees that year ~ this was basically the year I quit watching the Academy Awards. I miss his acting performances.
Even though he was 6'5" tall, they elevated him even further via raised platforms whenever he was standing or walking next to the other actors to make him appear even larger than he was. Add in his outstanding emotional performance, and well, we get this movie as a result. As I said, I know of no one else who could have pulled it off.
It's not that we enjoy seeing you cry. We just enjoy truly great movies with depth that's above and beyond action, special effects, and jump scares. Give me a great drama any day of the week, and twice on Saturdays & Sundays.
Tough to watch you hurt, India, but I guess you know that's the intent. Stephen King is not a capital punishment fan and he sure knows how to make people have to think about it.
Most people miss this dimension of criticism of our prison system (and justice system in general) in both this film and "The Shawshank Redemption".
It's hard for me to watch and I'm a hardline proponent of capital punishment
1). Arlen Bitterbuck the Cherokee chief beat another man to death with a chunk of concrete block. It was over a pair of shoes; Bitterbuck was DRUNK. . . .he's earned his spot on "the Mile".
2) Eduard Delacroix, the adorable little mouse-loving Cajun, caused the death of several people when their dwelling caught fire, because Delacroix started the fire trying to dispose of the body of a woman he had raped and murdered. "Cute" l
little fellow, yes?
3) John Coffey was ready to go; his existence was agony for him. Considering who He probably was, though, He probably resurrected and walks among us today.
4) William Wharton, along with the murders WE find out about, also murdered a pregnant woman. Is anyone shedding one tear for HIM??? He died rather quickly, and possibly with relatively less pain, too.
5) Any sniveling about Percy Wetmore, the unconvicted criminal on the Mile? No? NO?
Save some tears for the victims, why don't you?

It's not like we want to see you cry, but we wish we could watch this movies for the first time again to reexperience this emotions, but we can't, however, by watching your emotions we can reexperence it through empathy.
It always makes me smile when people see Mr. Jingles the first time and just assume it's an irrelevant part of the movie...😊😊❤❤
what's interesting is even though we all hated percy, paul listened to his advice about the cigar box...and kept the same box all those years later.
this is the kind of movie that leaves a lasting impact on you. its a movie you remember. You remember scenes and quotes.
For me, its when Del says his final goodbye to the assembled guards. "You a good man boss Howell. You too boss Stanton... I sure wish I could have met you guys somewhere else.."
There is so much being left unsaid. His forgiveness for them having to do what they are about to do, his understanding that they do not wish to do it, but have it, his acceptance that this is his fate, his desire to have had friends like them in his youth so he maybe could have avoided the things he did to land him where he was, and so much more. When you see it, you understand it, but puttin it into words is a daunting task.
One of my top 10 movies ever made and idc how many times I've seen it...which has been alot. I still cry 😢😢 such an amazing movie!!
I've watched this movie over a dozen times and it never gets easier.
Michael Caine won that year . Michael Clark Duncan deserved it no disrespect to Mr . Caine.
@@moon-moth1 Actually it was originally serialized in several parts in paperback then put out in a single book. At the time they did it was quite unusual for a serious writer like King. Paul wasn't as likeable in the book as I recall. Tom Hanks brought a real humanity to that role. He's really one of our finest.
I always lose it when Paul asks John what he should tell God upon his own judgement and again when he says "May God have mercy on your soul" but you KNOW he was thinking "May God have mercy on MY soul"... and when his voice quivers when he says "Roll on 2"... just gimme the whole damn box of kleenex already.
one of if not the best movie of all time from the writing to the set direction and the acting from everyone involved is truly amazing it is a film that everyone should watch at least once. Michael Clarke Duncan gave a legendary performance R.I.P Mr. Duncan.
On of my top ten of movies and it is number one. This is a masterpiece that cannot be beat. It takes your emotions to all points on the map! I will watch this movie many more times in my life. Incredible acting that is like none other. I give it a 15 out of 10 and the same number of stars.
We have a theater that plays old movies. I hope this will be one of them soon.

Don't worry about being speechless at the end of The Green Mile. Most folks are. But after seeing it several times, and having read the book, it finally dawned on me that John is always obeyed. And once he decides to take action anyone who tries to intervene soon just sort of backs off. He's so soft spoken and patient it's easy to miss. If John had wanted a different outcome he could have made it happen.
How can a film be this long, and yet not waste a single minute... the only one I've ever watched that was BETTER than its book.
Robbed of at least three Oscars, IMO (best picture, best supporting actor, and best original score).
John Coffey was an angel sent to earth in a time when a man was judged more harshly by the color of his skin. He was child in a man's enormous body and he suffered the earth until he finally came home, wiser. A Stephen King masterpiece of emotion and imagination. The book made me cry and so does the movie every time I watch it (at least 20x).

John Coffey is Jesus, to confirm it: The initials of John Coffey stand for Jesus Christ. The movie is Jesus's life till the day of crucifixion

Stephen King wanted to try writing a novel in sections, like Dickens did.
There were six in total (and you're right, each individual section was quite short).
I could hardly wait for each month to read the next one. I still have my six copies. 😊
This great movie isn't easy, but it's worthwhile and important. It's worth seeing again, as needed, to remember what it is to be human.

This is my wife's and mine favorite film for the power of the spiritual messages it held.
We had been together 42 years, married 35 of those years before her passing (about 2 years ago). It felt good to watch this again since this was a film we talked about often.
Michael Clarke Duncan who played John Coffey had passed away a day before my birthday - which is a strange kind of feeling for me. This was several years after this film was made. I am fine and have found my balance and my peace, Often I feel my wife's spirit guiding me.

I was just sitting here crying along with you. I have seen this movie many times and always cry. I think its the mark of a good movie, the fact that it can play on your emotions time after time. And that makes it worth watching again. A movie I disliked the first time was Cold Mountain but now it's one of my favorites. You should react to it.
John Coffey. His initials are synonymous with someone else who gave his life for the betterment of humanity. Nothing is coincidence. And, this used to be one of my favorite movies of all time. Script wise is still is. But I learned in the last couple years, Tom Hanks is not a nice man. Stephen King has been tormented for decades, and writing was his only release... Stephen King still doesn't get it ... or maybe he does but can't speak it. at any rate, this movie is beautiful and I so enjoyed your reaction to it. It is definitely a movie that you only watch one time and it sticks with you. You don't need or want to watch it a second time
I love this movie. I think John was an Angel in human form and Wild Bill was a demon in human form.
Think about this: An ordinary man named Paul is telling the story of a miracle man with the initials JC. JC is an empath, a seer, a healer and a teacher, who gave so many on Earth the gift of love and LIFE and then suffers his own death for the sins of others, that he may live in Heaven for eternity. Sound familiar?
This is a heavy, heavy movie, but it's soooooooo good and well acted. I fully get that you will never watch it again, but yeah, sometimes you just need to experience that empathy and cry a little. When I need that, I watch people react to this movie and it gets me EVERY TIME.

Killing John Coffee was an act of mercy. He could feel everyone's pain and fears and insanity.
Great reaction like always, This movie is a masterpiece, there are very few movies that don't try to reinvent the wheel and this is one of them. It is a feel good story grounded in reality that sends a simple, but efficient message. And its another adaptation of Stephen King's novel. Keep up the amazing work.
The interesting thing is, it wasn't a normal novel. I remember when this story first came out and it was published as a serial novel. They later put all the pieces together and so now you can get it as one book, and I wonder if they are even printing the serial parts anymore.
But as a general rule, the shorter the King story is, the better the movie it makes. Shawshank Redemption is another King tale, made into a movie by the same director (Frank Darabont of Walking Dead fame), and it is also absolutely amazing. I don't get it, because unlike most TWD fans I am not a huge fan of seasons 1 and 2, which were also done by Darabont. Why'd he do so well with King? We may never know.

2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie".
3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.)
4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row.
5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD)😇 and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭
6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist,
Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part.
7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene.
8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but
was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill.
9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy.👌EVERYONE hates him.
10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge.
11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography/angles to make John look taller.
12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off.
13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for.
14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced.

I've seen people get pissed at the Parents of the 2 dead girls and I am like "Why? Why are you mad at them? They don't KNOW any different. As far as they know, he killed their kids and they are reacting to their feelings based off that. They don't know what we do so don't blame the parents for their feelings for what they believe is right". As a Father, I would have said far worse to the guy I felt killed me kids.
This was the story of Longinus, the soldier who speared Christ. The first Christian, cursed to walk the earth till JC returned. The writer and director knew what a great story this was. Love this story/film, big and bad.

I think that this movie is up there with the best, and me too are crying to this rollercoaster of a story... so dont´see that as something bad, its good on thge contrary.
It's a bit to see you cry, but also to relive it vicariously.

My friend James wanted me to watch The Green Mile with him. He was having some health problems. Never got the chance. He passed away. For years I wouldn't watch it. When I finally did, I think I understood. Though it adds an extra layer of pain for me when I watch it. I don't do it often.
According to the book. The first guy killed a guy in a bar fight. Edward killed a girl, the building they were in caught fire, 2 other people couldn't escape it and passed away.

I said I'd never watch this again as well...but it is hard to escape this movie because it is so good. The good news is that I can watch it now without any tears. It gets better.
Funny how King's best book to film conversions have been prison stories, and his horror to film have mostly been lacking.
But Michael Clarke Duncan.....damn.
I cried reading this book. It was initially a series. Chapters given monthly. I cried like a baby when I saw the film. Very well written and acted!

This movie came out 1999 . We had the 🌑 box . . I was like 10 years old . I was supposed to go to school the next day . Thought i was going to see porn and all. But I came across this movie it caught my attention and all when John Coffeys death came on I cried so much my dad came into my room and all. Saw what I was watching and just sat down next to me. . I still cry the same way nowadays . May the actor for John Coffey rest in peace . . Mr Michael Clarke Duncan.......... Not a lot of people hear him say. When being strapped in. I'm in heaven I'm in heavin.
It's no coincidence that John Coffey's initials are JC.
There's a whole theory in Stephen King fandom that the readon why so much bad happens in the books after this: We killed Jesus twice. Some think that everything that happens after this is the end times; it's a battle of good and evil with all of the people who were left behind just struggling to get by, but they don't recognize it for what it is. (The author describes what comes out of John's mouth as being flies; watch Doctor Sleep and listen to Dan's description of where he sees flies.) Paul Edgecomb is Longinus,the one who pierced Jesus's side and gave the fatal wound, doomed to live an exceptionally long life, imploring people to hear the word and to believe despite having no real proof aside from the ramblings of an old man.
John Coffey looks like an angel while watching the movie and mentions that the actors look "just like angels," he has no traceable past, he understands the nature and depth of pain and it hurts him to know the pain of others. Why isn't he smart? He is the true embodiment of innocence. He is smart, but only concerning emotions.
Stephen King is the all time greatest.. just LOVE his stories.. so good. MDC should have been recognized for this.. fricking oscars.

You should watch the shawshank redemption - another Stephen king prison film but another epic story and often placed in the top ten films of all time. It’s another tough watch but redemption is there too.

I have watched it once, quite a number of years ago.
Much like you I have decided to never watch it again.
It's great, a masterpiece. I don't think there is any question about it.
And as a matter of fact it never made me cry.
However it does make me feel bad. And for a long time.
