    I use End All extensively on my anthuriums, without damage. Not as good as systemic stuff for thrips (though it works), but it's the best I found against spider mites.

    Glad you're back! Do you always keep your reservoir full, or do you let it go dry for awhile between each refill? I always keep mine wet despite Lechuza's instructions for a dry period, but am interested to know how other folks are handling their anthuriums in semi-hydro.

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Hart! I typically water on a loose schedule, so I don't pay a ton of attention to reservoirs unless they're bone dry. I'd say that the majority of the time, there's still a little left in the tank when I go to re-water, except for stuff at the _very_ top of my tent that happens to dry out first due to proximity to both light and ventilation. If stuff goes bone dry it's a bit of a race to beat dry-rot because depending on the plant you typically don't have a lot of wiggle room to make sure it gets watered again before it starts to suffer. Once bottom leaves start yellowing or you start seeing damage then you've definitely waited too long.
      Stuff with really thick roots (like, clarinervium-esque) likely will handle the drought period a little better, but I wouldn't go totally dry for longer than a day or two. And I'm *definitely* not on top of my watering well enough to be able to risk that, so I just do a biweekly-triweekly schedule for stuff in #semihydro, and usually around weekly for stuff that's in transitional media (moss, tree fern) if it's in open-air and not in an enclosed container.

      Hey Jazzy! Glad you enjoyed! 💚 I think I need to build up a little intestinal fortitude before I show off the whole collection... still a lot of stuff that needs rearranging, repotting, cleaning up and moving around before I feel like I can do that and not embarrass myself. 😉 Appreciate the motivation, though!

    @OrdinaryPlantGirl 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I'm glad I'm not the only one that has KOS issues. It's surviving on two leaves and has aborted two new ones. That and my Besseae aff are the slowest growing ones in my collection!

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha - I'm pretty sure I got the stink-eye from my buddy @rifaldinugroho8226 for telling people not to buy one if they're impatient, but hey, it's true! I don't know if it's the genetics of the specific plant I own, but I've seen others complain about it (while still loving the foliage!), and it's absolutely one of my slowest-growing Anthuriums, by a long shot. I will say that after finally moving it out of moss and into semi-hydro with proper nutrients (still on a heat mat, in open air, with slightly-improved lighting), it has performed quite a bit better. The left I showed you guys in this video finally popped, with a slight bit of mechanical damage, but it was larger than the other two leaves. So now we're a 3-leader. I'll keep you guys posted. 😉
      Oh... and besseae aff. is a BEAST to keep happy. I killed my first one from Ecuagenera a couple of years back within 30 days of picking it up. This was before my grow tent, though. I just finally got another one from Amazonian Plants (📸 @amazonianplants.ec) and it came in with pretty weak roots and one half-orange (bacterial? 😂) leaf. Moving it to tree fern/perlite, tent warmth, and medium-high humidity. Still looks great and I hope I can rehab it, but I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed. 🤞

    Maybe it’s not Pterodactyl, but Leuconeurum? I have one and your plant gives me strong leuconeurum vibes

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Dan - yeah, I'm still not 100% sure myself. I've seen the leuconeurum around online (never in person) as well, but the juvenile shape doesn't jive quite right with this plant, seems a little more narrow with longer, more well-defined lobes, but it's hard to tell at this stage. I've also had it suggested to me (just today, thanks Aida! 👋) that it might be what's being referred to as "Delta Faux" these days.
      At this point I think I'll have to see what it looks like when it starts hitting cataphyll stage and giving me some more mature leaves, then I'll show you guys and we can figure it out together. 😉

  • @lukki7ster

    So you can confirm Safers will kill thrips? Good to know, as a fellow Canadian, i know all too well we cant get the heavy duty stuff lol

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes! It does, but it's a real pain in the ass to use with a large collection. Spraying individual plants 1-3x to get rid of an outbreak is no fun at all. Get the concentrate, it's about $15 CAD and it's 50ml/1L of water so you get 20 uses out of it if you have a 1L spray bottle. In ~3.5 years of using it I'm only on my 2nd bottle of concentrate and I use it pretty liberally. However... it burns new leaves. Don't use it on anything not hardened off.
      TBH I'd much prefer to use a systemic with semi-hydro, where I can just water it in once a month, but it's not easy to get your hands on (although I found a way... just waiting to pick some up from my "dealer" 😈) . For now, I alternate the Safer's and my beneficials from Growliv (www.growliv.com) in between every 6 weeks or so. Systemics would be way cheaper, but this is how us Canadians roll. 🤷‍♂️

    Do you have any experience of or views about A. nigrolaminum? I ask as I’m waiting for a Gigi delivery. I don’t see many people talking about it. Just in case you’ve any wisdom to share there 😊

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Thanks for watching - I do have an A. nigrolaminum "Gigi" that I got from Ecuagenera about a 1.5-2 years back. I've never shown it on the channel because I honestly haven't paid it too much attention... it's still in moss and sitting waaay on the bottom shelf of my grow tent in pretty low light, in the coolest part of the tent. It's put new growth, but it's also dropped a couple of leaves, so that's about break-even.
      I've seen several nigrolaminum hybrids floating around lately, so anecdotally it seems to be a pretty decent hybridizer. The plants you get from Ecuagenera (assuming you got yours there, or from Tropicals/Amazonian) are generally pretty large, so I'd say the toughest challenge will just be acclimating it. And compared to other imports it should be pretty easy-going. Mine didn't give too much trouble even with all the neglect and the tiny container - it's a pretty thick, leathery and shiny leaf, so it should stand up to quite a bit before it starts freaking out.
      You've inspired me to pull it out of there and give it a glow-up, though. I think it's probably ultra rootbound in there and it would be a good idea to move it into pon and give it a better life. 😉

    Thank you for not being afraid to call JV the gatekeeper and cult figure he is. Yes he's very accomplished, but his ego and cult following are more than I can tolerate.

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Jake! Yeah, I have my reservations with JV and his "following" but I think we have to admit he's contributed a lot of knowledge to the masses with some of his publicly-available research and (prolific) writings. Personally I don't really like the cult of personality that's risen up around him over the last few years (and I can't imagine it was quite this dramatic before the pandemic...), but he has some undeniably sexy plants.
      I wish they weren't crazy expensive or hard to get, but it is what it is... there are plenty of other gate-kept plants out there (Delta Force, anyone? and a lot of the fancy Aussie hybrids are nearly impossible to import here), and - taking a step back - I think he tends to get more of a laser focus due to his name recognition. I can understand not being able to tolerate it, though. 🤷‍♂️
      I really want an Anthurium Hobgoblin and I feel kind of dirty about it. 😢 Does this make me a bad person? And if so... can I get one and still live with myself? Probably. 😂

      @@theproppist full disclosure I have a Quechua queen made and named by jv (bought it locally from someone) and it’s one of my favorite anthuriums so you’re not a bad person for liking someone’s creation or appreciating their work. Unfortunately he and I had an altercation via email. I used to ask him what he had to sell and his prices were always out of my budget so I never bought from him, so naturally he saw my emails as a waste of time and ghosted me. Fast forward over a year later(hadn’t sent him any emails in that time), I ask for permission to use some of his photographs for my educational anthurium videos, thinking he might appreciate what I’m doing as a plant enthusiast. He didn’t respond so I used another name and when he found out it was me, he flipped out on me and told me off. Apparently I REALLY offended him by never buying from him. He took it as deception when all I did was ask if I could have permission to use his photos in a video. Maybe he was having a bad day. But that altercation aside, he has very specific wording on his website that suggests a lot of pomposity…over leaves. Dang leaves! It’s people like him and those he attracts that ruins the fun of plant collecting. I much prefer people like Tom Croat, who comes off as a genuine plant nerd who is eager to talk your ear off about something he’s passion about.
