    This video has renewed my brain cells 😂😂😂. The way you used wicking and leca in your moss pole. Oh boy so simple. I want to throw out at least seven large soil planters and convert to leca. Wow I was browsing and you popped up. Im so excited. Thank you so much Teacher Proppist

    Interesting to see you have success with the wick up the pole with leca, a lot of people say it doesn't work, even when they put wicks up the moss poles

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there - thanks for the comment!
      It definitely works, and I have the mouldy streaks up my wicks to prove it. My P. Glorious has especially liked the leca pole, but I have my Burle Marx Flame and my albo on there as well. I don't think I have more than 5 or 6 plants using leca poles, FWIW, but I hate poles in general, lol. 😂
      However, couple of caveats:
      1. Filling the leca can be a bit of a pain as the plant grows. It's less effort and less messy than using soil or tree fern (moss isn't too bad, depending if you're just stuffing it in there or doing something more complicated), but depending on how your pole is structured, you may have to pour a few times to get things to settle and not move around.
      2. Moving plants with leca poles usually results in having to redo a portion of your pole unless you're (a) really careful or (b) your plant is already well-rooted into the pole.
      3. Make sure to add quite a bit of give/slack to the wicking when you put the pole in originally, because it's a real pain in the ass to try and extend it inside the pole if you find it's crumping down or you don't have enough wicking as you continue filling the pole up over time. I ended up adding a good 50% extra wicking to save myself the hassle later.
      I don't have all that many climbers going these days, so it's not a huge time-consuming issue for me, but if you have a ton of climbers I could see some of these things aiding your decision one way or another. Either way, it's less work and less messy than trying to do Lechuza pon poles, so if you're trying to stick to full semi-hydro (haha), then you're pretty limited in your options.
      Hope that helps, and appreciate the feedback! 🤘

      Glad you found it helpful! To be fair, I "borrowed" the initial technique from Kevin @ HakunaLaPlanta (his channel is awesome) and made some modifications for my own use case. Getting those poles to sit happily in semi-hydro can require some intense fiddling...

      Thanks for the suggestion - I have a couple of LECA videos up now (be sure to check out my latest Alocasia video!) but I think I'll probably do a pon video when I do my next big Anthurium repot. Well, pon and tree fern/perlite/pumice depending on the state of the roots I'm dealing with. 😉

    We recently purchased some tiny monstera thai constellations and was wondering how soon we could put them in leca? One is maybe two inches max from base to tip of leaf and the other is maybe 5 inches.

      Hey there! Thanks for stopping by. 😀
      To answer your question with a question -- it really depends on your environment. How long have you had the plants, and what are you keeping them in currently? Are they in enclosed containers or out in open-air? And what substrate are they currently both in?
      Just to give you an example -- I have a TC (tissue culture) Monstera Thai constellation "Mint" that I've had in perlite in a sealed container for at least a couple of months now. It hasn't grown much in that self-contained, closed environment, but it's happy and I'm not going to rush it out into the open. Since it's only about 4 inches tall right now with maybe 2 leaves, I'm not going to mess with it The roots are too fine to move to LECA currently.
      I'm assuming since the ones you purchased are tiny (like, 2-5" tall) that they likely came from TC (if not, this still kind of applies but a little less so), in which case you're going to want to acclimate your plant to your environment _first_ before you switch it to another medium. Once the plant has put on at least one leaf in your environment (not in a jar or sealed container), and the roots aren't super fine, you're probably safe to try LECA. In that case I'd probably suggest a reservoir and wicking so you don't run the risk of losing a lot of roots to rot while switching mediums.
      Finally, if I were taking a propagation of a Monstera deliciosa that's been living and growing in open air (room conditions, or a grow tent, doesn't really matter) -- my M. deliciosa aurea for instance -- I would take the top cut and decide on a rooting substrate based on the existing root conditions. If it had huge aerial roots and was ready to rock, I'd probably put it straight into LECA and semi-hydro nutrients, after letting the chop cut callous a bit. If it was a bare node with no aerial roots, then I'd probably root it up in something else (e.g. perlite or tree fern, or even perlite + LECA 50/50) before I migrated to 100% LECA.
      Hope this helps! You may want to check out @prettyingreen here on YT as well. Chris over there has posted a ton of videos specifically about Monstera deliciosa and LECA and I'm a big fan of his growing and propagation methods, too. 😉

    You look and sound like the jail boss from bound by blood
    Nice plants whats plants to do you think will retain value in the next three years ?

    • @theproppist
      @theproppist  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Haha - never seen Bound by Blood but I'll take your word for it (game? movie? I'm curious now.)
      Good question on retaining value. Probably a video on its own, but I'm just a collector, not an expert on long-term plant values and market trends. However, I'll give it a shot...
      Out of the ones I talked about in this video specifically,:
      - I think Monstera borsigiana albo is a classic and it's probably a good bet that it will stay that way. Getting a good quality cutting or plantlet is really paramount and the stuff that floods the markets is really sketchy. Good variegation on these guys is really the key to their value and so far people seem to hoard the better quality ones and basically propagate the stuff that's reverting, so the stuff that's in circulation for the most part sucks. This is my second albo and the first one I had was basically one step up from a wet stick and went almost full white on me very early on. I bought the one in the video as a backup but now I think it's actually going to be my main plant because it's got really nice subtle (25-40%) variegation and the candy-cane striping on the stem. Also, the stuff that's available in tissue culture for this plant specifically (recent example.: bit.ly/454ncC2 ) hasn't really (a) come down in price and (b) had any kind of mass distribution yet. So yeah, it may not be a huge moneymaker but I think it will retain value well.
      - The Monstera lechleriana var. is a fantastic looking plant and sizes up really easily. They were pretty expensive ($500-1000) last year but I got this one for sub-$200 CAD in a 2" or 3" pot as a rooted cutting. The lechleriana isn't really a super popular plant in general and TBH it's a bit of a pest magnet, but it looks great if you can keep it in good shape. It vines and sizes up fast, but that also means propagating it is a lot easier than say, the albo I was just talking about. Anything that propagates easily and sizes up pretty quick is probably not going to be great for retaining value -- you could make a case though that since it's not super popular, most folks aren't propagating it, so you could gatekeep a little and sell cuttings sparingly and keep the prices higher (if you're a cynic like me. 😉)
      - The BMF is in TC already and people are buying it. It's also not variegated so that makes things a little simpler to manage for resale. I think this one is probably going to drop like a rock within the next 12-18 months. Prices are still pretty high, but nowhere near the heights of last year. I really just want to get my money out of it and keep it because the plant looks awesome, but I don't have high hopes of it being a cash cow longer than maybe the rest of 2023 at most. I'll be surprised if I'm wrong on this one...
      As to the other stuff I showed... Anthuriums are all the rage these days and the propagation process is pretty slow. Cool Anthurium hybrids specifically are super hot and there's a ton of awesome ones coming out of Indonesia right now. I've brought a few in through the local groups here and I'll show you guys a few of the larger ones in a future video. Hybrids are probably a great moneymaker long term just because the effort and time involved in getting good quality is always going to drive the prices up. For instance... my Anthurium HU (King of Spades) seedling just popped a new leaf that looks amazing and is 100% nicer than any of the original leaves on the plant when I bought it, so I'm really pumped about that one.
      In general though - @kayleeellenofficial has a few good guides on this if you're curious, but I'd say outside of pure popularity and whether the thing is in heavy tissue culture already or not, you'll want to look at (1) ease of propagation, (2) growth rate / speed, and (3) how hard it is to obtain good variegation from a cutting/node as the primary barometers of whether the plant will retain value or not.
      Hope that helps! 🤘
