I'd love to see INXS in the Cleveland, OHIO, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Apparently the reason why they aren't is that they were only big in America for a brief period of time. They are however in the Australia Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame, inducted in 2001. I would actually give this a lot more credibility, as ARIA, is an Official Body or Organisation. Unfortunately though not as well known outside Australia as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which really is just a Foundation & Museum that was setup in Cleveland, by the Founder of Atlantic Records. Then suddenly this Museum in Cleveland, OHIO, becomes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, for the entire World. There are other Music Industry Hall of Fame's around the World. Even the Grammy's {which id give more credibility} has their own Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. So why should a Museum & Foundation in Cleveland, with an American Committee become the World's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Quite simply you need to be big in America to make it, so at the very most this Cleveland Hall Of Fame, Is the North American Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, at the very most. Basically if the Vote was held in Australian, New Zealand, Europe, &/or the UK - Bands like Iron Maiden & INXS, would 100% be in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Even though for most of my life INXS, was my favourite Band, i can accept & understand INXS, not being in the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Simply they wernt big enough in North America for long enough. However that said, i cannot take seriously this so called "Hall of Fame", that has yet to induct Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden has been one of the World's biggest Bands for a very long period of time, ironically longer than this "Hall of Fame", has existed. Also Iron Maiden's influence in Music, is massive & well known. They redefined a genre, they helped define Heavy Metal, & they inspired many great Bands that came after them.
In its entirety, "Kick" is one of my all-time favorite albums. Track after track are absolute bangers, and each leading magically into the next. RIP, Michael.
I loved their song “Original Sin”. When their song “Never Tear Us Apart” came out I caught the video on tv at my godparents cottage and my godparents were telling me the history of where it was filmed in Prague. My godparents were Czech and had lived in Prague. They thought the video was beautiful and pulled out a book they had about Prague that was filled with photos for me to look at. It was nice that these seniors loved the music I listened to back then. When I am missing them I go watch the videos INXS filmed in Prague and remember them.
The untimely death of Michael Hutchens was barely a blip on the screen of major media. It was an immense loss for the world because suddenly this wonderful, dynamic group was suddenly finished, snuffed out like a candle. Their musical history should be celebrated and enjoyed for years to come.
It was a bigger deal in Australia and the UK than it was in America. Everything I learned about the circumstances surrounding it came from the UK press. Go back and examine those stories. Holy shit, it's crazy!
Actually, it was a really big deal in Canada. It was all over the media. I was busy having babies at the time and hardly into any news or music but I remember it very well. I'm 73 years old and I remember it being on the news, especially on the radio.
@@jo-annemuchan8348 I should have said in America. After the early 90s, I suppose they were considered old news. I have many friends who are also fans, who felt the same way. The media spent a couple of days, at best, then nothing. E! and VH-1 had their documentaries on him and that was it. Oh yeah, one story from People Magazine. I got the majority of the story from a UK magazine. I hate how the US media works. They push what they think people want to see and hear but they're usually way out of touch.
INXS had back to back albums (Kick and X) that you not only could, but should, listen to from start to finish. Amazing song-writing and outstanding chemistry in INXS. Still one of my favorite bands. Great video!
Mystify is my all time favorite song. And, I have to admit I'm embarrassed for not realizing that Listen Like Thieves was the previous album, another front-to-back album!
I was thinking the same thing! In absolutely every interview, he was always in awe of Michael and his pure talent, and INXS’ s success, and still so very humble. Saw them 8 times in concert , met them once, and just about died a little inside when michel passed away❤

INXS continue to resonate with me. A couple years back I dug deeper and found their first couple of albums (1980 - self titled & 1981 - Underneath the Colours) and also reconnected with 1982's Shabooh Shoobah. Yes Kick had them at #1, arguably the biggest band in the world at that time... but it is so fantastic to go back and discover where it all came from. It's bright, original and fantastic... you can hear the beginings of the INXS way. On The Bus and Learn To Smile... so unique. Man, the world needs more INXS right now.
Andrew Farriss is so humble. I find it very interesting that the most innovative artists are/were humble. You can tell by how he is talking about music how much he really enjoys it... creating it, producing it, & playing it. How wonderful; we get to experience his & other artists genius every day.
INXS are my favourite Australian band, "Never Tear Us Apart" would be my all time favourite of theirs, but I like "Need You Tonight", for how sultry it is. Rest in peace, Michael Hutchence.

I just love the affection and admiration that Andrew has for Michael after all these years. He really brings him to life and speaks to his genius. Such a tragic loss to the band and all of us.
"The Swing" and "Listen Like Thieves" are my favorite INXS albums. The rest are very, very good, but those two are my go to listen all the way through, sing every song albums. The first time I saw them in person, they were opening for The GoGos, and there might have been six of us there who came for INXS. That sure changed after a while...lol.
INXS are one of the few bands who had 4 great albums in a row, Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing, Listen Like Thieves and Kick. However the middle two are far and away the best!
I saw INXS during this tour at Radio City Music Hall. I had a friend who worked there and got me really good seats (5th row center, on an aisle). The energy was unbelievable. Best part of the show was the girls running up on stage to do whatever it was they thought they could do to Michael. Security guards were grabbing them on both sides of the stage. At one point, this big girl got up there. The first security guard signaled for back up to get her off the stage. I remember it well. Saw about 6-8 shows that year. This one was top 3.
I’m one of the lucky people who got to see them 2 times in concert. What a great front man Michael Hutchence was. Stage presence with all the right moves and a mesmerizing voice to back it up.
He was a hugely charismatic and mesmerising frontman...even back in his younger days...I saw INXS countless times from their early pub gigs to their arena shows. It was amazing watching their early talent and experimental style gradually develop into the Band that they became.
Michael always reminded me of Jim Morrison. I would have loved to have heard him cover a Doors tune. Riders on the Storm or People Are Strange. So talented, INXS was an amazing band. So talented. His beautiful daughter looks so much like him. RIP Thank you professor!
Shabooh Shoobah was an amazing album and I was a huge fan even before most people had caught on to INXS. To Look At You was simply the ultimate track of my high school years.
First time I ever heard To Look at You was when I first went to college and a local band did a cover of it. Didn't even realize it was INXS until someone mentioned it. The song has such a unique and different sound from the rest of their work. Great memories.
I was very fortunate enough to see INXS before Michael passed here in Chicago. His stage presence was unbelievable. I'm standing there watching him thinking.... this person could NEVER do anything else other than what I'm watching him do now.
I was fortunate to see this song live 3 times. Great every time. I've been INXS fan since 1982. Michael was one of those people that come along once in a lifetime. He was so mesmerizing. Michael and Andrew were like kismet song writers and band members. I will forever miss him. Andrew's album is pretty good too. "Need You Tonight" and "Never Tear Us Apart" belong to the 80's, like peanut butter belongs with jelly, or ice cream belongs at Dairy Queen, or a plug belongs in an outlet! They were pieces of the puzzle that made the 80's the greatest decade. 😎👍
Being an Aussie, INXS were a fave since they first started, they were and are still my fave Aussie band. Shabooh Shoobah was one of the first albums I ever bought. Saw them in concert at Festival Hall in Brisbane in 1984. My two big memories of that concert, standing next a speaker that was twice as tall as me and nearly getting my head blown off, thought I was going to be deaf forever, and Michael Hutchence prowling around the stage, charisma pouring off him. Whenever I hear the word charisma I always think of Hutchence, he had such power on stage, I finally understood that word when I saw him. He's the rock star I always feel the saddest about dying early, so talented, distinctive and charismatic. I always wonder whether that punch to the head contributed to his personality change and how he died. My fave year of music was 1984, but the whole of the 80s was my favourite musical era.
My favorite 80's band. I remember "The One Thing" being played on MTV in the early days and loving it. I still think that is their best song despite the massive success of Need You Tonight. Listen like Thieves was the first album of theirs I was able to buy and wore the cassette out. I even liked their comeback song "Pretty Vegas" in the early 2000's. I feel like this band has been forgotten as time moves on. I don't hear them on 80's radio stations. It is a shame as they have such a fun and infectious sound.
I agree totally! I saw that video and Michael Hutchence jumped thru the screen. I then saw INXS live at the US Festival. It confirmed my first impression of Michael, he somehow was the fusion of himself, Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger roled into one being! Incredible. Following that the film "Reckless" came out. It starred Daryl Hannah, Aiden Quinn, and Adam Baldwin. Even Jennifer Grey was in it. Great film if you haven't seen it. Anyway the "Shabooh Shabaah" album by INXS was basically the soundtrack. INXS, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, and many others from the Canada, UK or Australia were the areas cranking out the best artists outside of US. Those were the best of times! We definitely have to thank MTV because radio wasn't initially receptive and playing it until they had no choice.
@@seanswinton6242 I seen Reckless. I don't remember much about it but I know I seen it. Aiden Quinn, there is a name I haven't heard in a long time. You're right about MTV. Those early years where MTV was struggling for videos were great because they played just about anything and you were introduced to so many different groups and sounds. I also agree about UK and Australia cranking out the best artists but I have always tended to like the rock and pop music from those countries over the US.
Thank God we had INXS back in the 80s. For me they were definitely part of the atmosphere and a compliment to the culture of the time. I saw them at Castle Farms in 1983 and it was one of my first concerts. To me they just kept getting better and better. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

INXS to me will always be the greatest Australian band of all time. “Shabooh Shoobah”was a great album, “the Swing” will always be one of my favourites, I love “Listen Like Thieves”. I was working as a teenager at my brother's restaurant.MTV was on and i heard Never Tear Us Apart for the very first time.I was mesmerized by that song and instantly knew it was going to be a hit.I was fortunate enough to see them perform live twice and are one of my all time favorite bands.
Kick is one of those rare albums that doesn't have a bad track and so many are simply amazing. To hear how relatively effortless the writing was for Need You Tonight, speaks to the genius and skill of the people involved. You can bet there were years of blood sweat and tears that served as the foundation first though.
My wife discovered INXS on a jazz radio channel in the DC area on her commute, and told me about them. When I heard them, that was it. LISTEN LIKE THEIVES was the album out then, and when KICK came out I remember driving my brother down a mountain so we could listen to it a few times. Boy I loved that album, still do.
I had just moved to Melbourne when 'Need you tonight' was released in Australia in 1987. I would drive over to a friend's house each Thursday and at the time I was in my car, I would listen to the top 10 on the radio. The first time I heard it, it was obvious that this was going to be a big hit. For the first few months, I knew I would hear the song on the drive to my friend's place. I remember one week the DJ saying that when they released the album in the US, they should rename it 'Kick-ass' because that's what they were going to do. And he was right. Whenever I hear the song, my mind goes straight to that time.
First of all…such an amazing band. I played the crap out of Kick when I was younger. Second, I loved Andrew Farris’ reaction to Adam’s compliment. He was genuinely worried that people wouldn’t like the music he’s putting out. It goes to show that the basic human emotions don’t change with fortune or fame. If I write something, I am scared to death of sharing it. And while I don’t have grand expectations of fortune or fame from my writing, it’s refreshing to see that we share that same worry with sharing something so personal and sitting and waiting while others judge it.
Anytime a friend on social media asks “what are your go to songs for……” my response is always the same INXS. Great for the gym, for jamming to, background, almost any occasion.
Kick is and was a great album in the 80's. I still listen to those songs today. Michael being the quintessential front man with amazing talent and mystique and sex appeal and Andrew has extraordinary composing talent. The two together made beautiful music that withstands the tests of time.
Thank you thank you thank you! INXS is far and away the greatest and most underappreciated big bands of all time. Imagine that they're not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame. I never stopped listening to them all these years and have only come to appreciate them more. Michael hutchence is perhaps one of the Great lead singers of all time and yet no one pays him the homage he is due May he rest in peace. Andrew Farris seems like a really down to earth person and I wish him nothing but the best. Long live the music of INXS
What a brilliant band INXS were & remain historically. Rock with ska, funk, 70's/80's/90's new wave, ballads & just about anything else you can imagine thrown into the mix to create an amazing stew of musical magic. Some outstanding sounds from the world at large that remains memorable. One of Australia's gifts to the world. Always missed & not forgotten Michael Hutchence.

I ❤ the Kick album. I was listening to it yesterday. My favorite song is Mystify on the Kick album. Andrew Ferriss is a sweet guy. He is my favorite member of INXS. I have been enjoying listening to his solo work. The song My Brother is a touching tribute to Michael Hutchence.

As a young teenager in the late 60's and early 70's, I was a rocker from the early days. Then, the 80's came around and the "new wave" of music started coming on. I couldn't understand it, because it was so different. It was this song and this band that opened me up to start appreciating that "new wave" of music. It took a long time to really embrace and enjoy that style, but this song was the start. However, in 1988, for me, it was all about Van Halen and Def Leppard. Okay, technically, Hysteria was released in 1987, but the music from that album filled the air waves through 1988. BTW, I've been binge watching your channel for 4 days now since I discovered your channel, and I'm exhausted from crying so much when you speak so eloquently about the music that is so personal to me. I love you, man! You put into words how I feel but could never express it like you do. You touch the very core of my soul. We are a kindred spirit and I salute you!
💯. I grew up on classic hard rock. My dad couldn't understand 80's New Wave and Pop. But over time, he began to appreciate bands like Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, and Billy Idol
So few people remember them it seems, even though they were pretty big at the time. It is a shame that there are only a few songs from each artist from within the top 40 that remain in anyone's library and so most of what we actually were hearing is now lost unless someone has a copy to share with friends. So much great music that I grew up on we will never hear played anywhere because people have forgotten about it and there's nothing around to remind us since the radio stations didn't keep the other 8-13 songs off a given album that they didn't overplay for 3 months straight. Most of what remains are the songs I got so burned out on that I never wanted to hear them again. In some cases time and distance from them has made it all more palatable for me again. Though I have never felt that way about anything from INXS or The Fix for that matter.
My love for Michael and INX runs deep. So to listen to this wonderful and candid interview with Andrew was so amazing. A humble sweet man who played such an important role in the creation of those incredible "Kick" tracks! Michael's stage presence was so visually mesmorizing and his sultry vocals so tantalizing!! What a truly sad and tragic loss of an artist at the prime of his life! Thank you so very much Professor. Really loved this episode...❤️
I LOVE INXS… since I heard Don’t Change I just loved them. I wish I had all their vinyl but that was a band my buddy got the records of, we’d swap cassette tapes of different bands. RIP Michael, thanks for the great musical memories.
My favorite band ever. I know every song, every album...love love love. MH so tragic, how can a band recover from that. Andrew is a musical genius! There were two times that I went to the theatres before the pandemic, and will never regret...going to see the remastered 'Live Baby Live' and watching Mystify...both left me in tears at the end.
“The one thing” to me is the breakthrough song at the peak of new wave music where INXS said “ I dare you to try and label us whatever genre people were referring them as. Square Pegs was on tv, Adam Ant was a superstar if you can believe that now that it’s 40 years later and INXS was charting their future. Another grand slam Professor. ❤️🔥⭐️

INXS was and still is a very special band to me and listen like thieves was my first ever cassette at 8 years old and in 1988 my late uncle bought me kick for my 10th birthday there's something that Michael hutchence and INXS brought to music that's so timeless and wonderful there will never be another Michael hutchence he was a one of a kind

The realisation of just how good INXS was back in the 80's & 90's is now a growing phenomenon , their legend will continue to grow as a new generation of people discover this mighty Aussie band .
My wife and her siblings all went to school with those blokes. Great guys.They even went back to “Davidson High” and did a mini concert after they made it big. Says a lot about them. Very grounded guys
I’ve just read all the comments. I can’t believe that no one has mentioned WELCOME TO WHEREVER YOU ARE. To me easily their best album and ALL AROUND and NOT ENOUGH TIME are killer songs.

INXS are timeless. Kiss the dirt, great song. It’s a shame in Australia that we have a bit of a tall poppy syndrome. When inxs made it huge overseas we forgot about them a bit. Welcome to Wherever you are, I think, is their masterpiece. Start to finish it just flows. Baby don’t cry is amazing. And elegantly wasted deserved much better chart success. Great album too. Who knows what was to be next. It’s sad it had to end. They were a great group.

I am one of the fortunate ones to have had the pleasure of running into Michael Hutchence several times and quite unexpectedly at the American Music Awards back in '89 and he was a humble, gentle, kind and a bit shy gentleman who I will never forget nor his kiss.
Great interview with one of my favorite bands. Too bad Michael Hutchence died. In 1986, my friend and I camped out overnight too get tickets for INXS in the front row. I still recall that concert today maybe that is why I love this band so much. It was the Listen Like Thieves Tour, great album another underrated album was The Swing album. Knowing that they probably will not tour anymore makes me sad.

On Sept 9th, 1997, I sat front row with 10' in front of me to jam out. It was at Sunrise Musical Theater, Sunrise, FL (Fort Lauderdale) . Michael Hutchence was such an amazing singer that I told my wife to be, "He is better then Mick Jagger" I witnessed one of his last performances, I believe his last in the USA. Then we know he died on Nov 9th, 1997. Drugs SUCK. If he would have lived, they would have changed music as we know it.
He didn’t die from drugs or any $ado-auto erotic perversity as portrayed by the media. He was taken out in the same manner as at least 20 celebs before him who were about to spill the beans on the establishment’s perverse crimes. Minutes before his assassination, the people in the next hotel room heard a loud, angry, violent argument between Hutchence and another man…evidence which never saw the light of day. It was a warning to other celebs to tow the line or else.
@@JPMonstie micheal was a heavy drug user from the beginning by the early 90’s he was known to take 5 ecstasy tablets before taking stage,some people just don’t make it nothing more nothing less☝🏻
Uh, no on three counts. Not their last show in the States. There was at least a handful more here in the States, at least. And no he did not die on Nov 9th. It was November 22nd. (The same day as JFK, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley) And lastly he did not die from drugs.

I was able to see INXS a couple of times. I saw this tour, it was Sept. 19th in Boston, MA. The show was fantastic, and Michael was fantastic. He came out in a dark 3 piece suit and as the night progressed he slowly stripped out of his suit. He finished his clothing take down with the song "Building Bridges" which had the perfect lyrics to match it. Please don't forget the impact of Michaels TBI on everything. It changes the perspective of his legacy and he deserves to have that! RIP.

Given INXS is my favorite band. Kick is perfection but their albums "INXS", and "Shabooh Shoobah", show why they had so much and only one way to go, the stars. 🤘🎸 . Been listening to Shabooh Shoobah repeatedly right now and the arrangement of "Black and White", "Golden Playpen", and "Jan's Song" is unbelievable!

How INXS are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is just ignorant. Huge album sales and singles, incredible live band, unique sound and an influential band around the world.
There should be a Hall of Fame for great artists that have been snubbed by the Hall of Fame. It would be better than the original!

I'd love to see INXS in the Cleveland, OHIO, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Apparently the reason why they aren't is that they were only big in America for a brief period of time.
They are however in the Australia Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame, inducted in 2001.
I would actually give this a lot more credibility, as ARIA, is an Official Body or Organisation. Unfortunately though not as well known outside Australia as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which really is just a Foundation & Museum that was setup in Cleveland, by the Founder of Atlantic Records.
Then suddenly this Museum in Cleveland, OHIO, becomes the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, for the entire World.
There are other Music Industry Hall of Fame's around the World. Even the Grammy's {which id give more credibility} has their own Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
So why should a Museum & Foundation in Cleveland, with an American Committee become the World's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Quite simply you need to be big in America to make it, so at the very most this Cleveland Hall Of Fame,
Is the North American Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, at the very most.
Basically if the Vote was held in Australian, New Zealand, Europe, &/or the UK - Bands like Iron Maiden & INXS, would 100% be in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Even though for most of my life INXS, was my favourite Band, i can accept & understand INXS, not being in the Cleveland Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Simply they wernt big enough in North America for long enough.
However that said, i cannot take seriously this so called "Hall of Fame", that has yet to induct Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden has been one of the World's biggest Bands for a very long period of time, ironically longer than this "Hall of Fame", has existed. Also Iron Maiden's influence in Music, is massive & well known. They redefined a genre, they helped define Heavy Metal, & they inspired many great Bands that came after them.
In its entirety, "Kick" is one of my all-time favorite albums. Track after track are absolute bangers, and each leading magically into the next. RIP, Michael.

I loved their song “Original Sin”. When their song “Never Tear Us Apart” came out I caught the video on tv at my godparents cottage and my godparents were telling me the history of where it was filmed in Prague. My godparents were Czech and had lived in Prague. They thought the video was beautiful and pulled out a book they had about Prague that was filled with photos for me to look at. It was nice that these seniors loved the music I listened to back then. When I am missing them I go watch the videos INXS filmed in Prague and remember them.

The untimely death of Michael Hutchens was barely a blip on the screen of major media. It was an immense loss for the world because suddenly this wonderful, dynamic group was suddenly finished, snuffed out like a candle. Their musical history should be celebrated and enjoyed for years to come.
It was a bigger deal in Australia and the UK than it was in America. Everything I learned about the circumstances surrounding it came from the UK press. Go back and examine those stories. Holy shit, it's crazy!
Actually, it was a really big deal in Canada. It was all over the media. I was busy having babies at the time and hardly into any news or music but I remember it very well. I'm 73 years old and I remember it being on the news, especially on the radio.
@@jo-annemuchan8348 I should have said in America. After the early 90s, I suppose they were considered old news. I have many friends who are also fans, who felt the same way. The media spent a couple of days, at best, then nothing. E! and VH-1 had their documentaries on him and that was it. Oh yeah, one story from People Magazine. I got the majority of the story from a UK magazine. I hate how the US media works. They push what they think people want to see and hear but they're usually way out of touch.
INXS had back to back albums (Kick and X) that you not only could, but should, listen to from start to finish. Amazing song-writing and outstanding chemistry in INXS. Still one of my favorite bands. Great video!

I was thinking the same thing! In absolutely every interview, he was always in awe of Michael and his pure talent, and INXS’ s success, and still so very humble. Saw them 8 times in concert , met them once, and just about died a little inside when michel passed away❤

INXS continue to resonate with me. A couple years back I dug deeper and found their first couple of albums (1980 - self titled & 1981 - Underneath the Colours) and also reconnected with 1982's Shabooh Shoobah. Yes Kick had them at #1, arguably the biggest band in the world at that time... but it is so fantastic to go back and discover where it all came from. It's bright, original and fantastic... you can hear the beginings of the INXS way. On The Bus and Learn To Smile... so unique. Man, the world needs more INXS right now.
Andrew Farriss is so humble. I find it very interesting that the most innovative artists are/were humble. You can tell by how he is talking about music how much he really enjoys it... creating it, producing it, & playing it. How wonderful; we get to experience his & other artists genius every day.
I enjoy him for the same reasons you listed too, Dee Dee. I think being humble is a key personality trait of a musician.
Michael was a great front man but I always felt that Andrew was the true brains behind the group’s success.
INXS are my favourite Australian band, "Never Tear Us Apart" would be my all time favourite of theirs, but I like "Need You Tonight", for how sultry it is. Rest in peace, Michael Hutchence.

I just love the affection and admiration that Andrew has for Michael after all these years. He really brings him to life and speaks to his genius. Such a tragic loss to the band and all of us.
"The Swing" and "Listen Like Thieves" are my favorite INXS albums. The rest are very, very good, but those two are my go to listen all the way through, sing every song albums. The first time I saw them in person, they were opening for The GoGos, and there might have been six of us there who came for INXS. That sure changed after a while...lol.
INXS are one of the few bands who had 4 great albums in a row, Shabooh Shoobah, The Swing, Listen Like Thieves and Kick. However the middle two are far and away the best!
I would make that five great albums in a Row.

I saw INXS during this tour at Radio City Music Hall. I had a friend who worked there and got me really good seats (5th row center, on an aisle). The energy was unbelievable.
Best part of the show was the girls running up on stage to do whatever it was they thought they could do to Michael. Security guards were grabbing them on both sides of the stage. At one point, this big girl got up there. The first security guard signaled for back up to get her off the stage. I remember it well.
Saw about 6-8 shows that year. This one was top 3.
Many younger people don’t realize INXS was the biggest band in the world for years.
They blew up the same time as U2 essentially but didn't have the same staying power pivoting into the 90s
I’m one of the lucky people who got to see them 2 times in concert. What a great front man Michael Hutchence was. Stage presence with all the right moves and a mesmerizing voice to back it up.
I must be really lucky, I saw them 4 times with MH, then once with JD! Always awesome!
He was a hugely charismatic and mesmerising frontman...even back in his younger days...I saw INXS countless times from their early pub gigs to their arena shows. It was amazing watching their early talent and experimental style gradually develop into the Band that they became.
Have still got photos of their early pub gigs...Great to look back on all of these years later...
I saw them in 93 in the refectory at Sydney uni. Only 1000 people there. Great night.

Michael always reminded me of Jim Morrison. I would have loved to have heard him cover a Doors tune. Riders on the Storm or People Are Strange. So talented, INXS was an amazing band. So talented. His beautiful daughter looks so much like him. RIP Thank you professor!

Shabooh Shoobah was an amazing album and I was a huge fan even before most people had caught on to INXS. To Look At You was simply the ultimate track of my high school years.

First time I ever heard To Look at You was when I first went to college and a local band did a cover of it. Didn't even realize it was INXS until someone mentioned it. The song has such a unique and different sound from the rest of their work. Great memories.
'Kick' was icing on the cake. Lots of sugar, some other ingredients. 'Shabooh Shoobah' has a lot more depth and flavor. Oops. Flavour.
I was very fortunate enough to see INXS before Michael passed here in Chicago. His stage presence was unbelievable. I'm standing there watching him thinking.... this person could NEVER do anything else other than what I'm watching him do now.
I was fortunate to see this song live 3 times. Great every time. I've been INXS fan since 1982. Michael was one of those people that come along once in a lifetime. He was so mesmerizing. Michael and Andrew were like kismet song writers and band members. I will forever miss him.

Being an Aussie, INXS were a fave since they first started, they were and are still my fave Aussie band. Shabooh Shoobah was one of the first albums I ever bought. Saw them in concert at Festival Hall in Brisbane in 1984. My two big memories of that concert, standing next a speaker that was twice as tall as me and nearly getting my head blown off, thought I was going to be deaf forever, and Michael Hutchence prowling around the stage, charisma pouring off him. Whenever I hear the word charisma I always think of Hutchence, he had such power on stage, I finally understood that word when I saw him. He's the rock star I always feel the saddest about dying early, so talented, distinctive and charismatic. I always wonder whether that punch to the head contributed to his personality change and how he died. My fave year of music was 1984, but the whole of the 80s was my favourite musical era.
My favorite 80's band. I remember "The One Thing" being played on MTV in the early days and loving it. I still think that is their best song despite the massive success of Need You Tonight. Listen like Thieves was the first album of theirs I was able to buy and wore the cassette out. I even liked their comeback song "Pretty Vegas" in the early 2000's. I feel like this band has been forgotten as time moves on. I don't hear them on 80's radio stations. It is a shame as they have such a fun and infectious sound.
I agree totally! I saw that video and Michael Hutchence jumped thru the screen. I then saw INXS live at the US Festival. It confirmed my first impression of Michael, he somehow was the fusion of himself, Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger roled into one being! Incredible. Following that the film "Reckless" came out. It starred Daryl Hannah, Aiden Quinn, and Adam Baldwin. Even Jennifer Grey was in it. Great film if you haven't seen it. Anyway the "Shabooh Shabaah" album by INXS was basically the soundtrack. INXS, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, and many others from the Canada, UK or Australia were the areas cranking out the best artists outside of US. Those were the best of times! We definitely have to thank MTV because radio wasn't initially receptive and playing it until they had no choice.
@@seanswinton6242 I seen Reckless. I don't remember much about it but I know I seen it. Aiden Quinn, there is a name I haven't heard in a long time. You're right about MTV. Those early years where MTV was struggling for videos were great because they played just about anything and you were introduced to so many different groups and sounds. I also agree about UK and Australia cranking out the best artists but I have always tended to like the rock and pop music from those countries over the US.
Thank God we had INXS back in the 80s. For me they were definitely part of the atmosphere and a compliment to the culture of the time. I saw them at Castle Farms in 1983 and it was one of my first concerts. To me they just kept getting better and better.

I was working as a teenager at my brother's restaurant.MTV was on and i heard Never Tear Us Apart for the very first time.I was mesmerized by that song and instantly knew it was going to be a hit.I was fortunate enough to see them perform live twice and are one of my all time favorite bands.
Kick is one of those rare albums that doesn't have a bad track and so many are simply amazing. To hear how relatively effortless the writing was for Need You Tonight, speaks to the genius and skill of the people involved. You can bet there were years of blood sweat and tears that served as the foundation first though.
My wife discovered INXS on a jazz radio channel in the DC area on her commute, and told me about them. When I heard them, that was it. LISTEN LIKE THEIVES was the album out then, and when KICK came out I remember driving my brother down a mountain so we could listen to it a few times. Boy I loved that album, still do.
I had just moved to Melbourne when 'Need you tonight' was released in Australia in 1987. I would drive over to a friend's house each Thursday and at the time I was in my car, I would listen to the top 10 on the radio. The first time I heard it, it was obvious that this was going to be a big hit. For the first few months, I knew I would hear the song on the drive to my friend's place. I remember one week the DJ saying that when they released the album in the US, they should rename it 'Kick-ass' because that's what they were going to do. And he was right. Whenever I hear the song, my mind goes straight to that time.
First of all…such an amazing band. I played the crap out of Kick when I was younger. Second, I loved Andrew Farris’ reaction to Adam’s compliment. He was genuinely worried that people wouldn’t like the music he’s putting out. It goes to show that the basic human emotions don’t change with fortune or fame. If I write something, I am scared to death of sharing it. And while I don’t have grand expectations of fortune or fame from my writing, it’s refreshing to see that we share that same worry with sharing something so personal and sitting and waiting while others judge it.
INXS my favorite band of all time. KICK is just a fantastic album, I cannot think of another album with so many hits. Michael will be always missed.
Anytime a friend on social media asks “what are your go to songs for……” my response is always the same INXS. Great for the gym, for jamming to, background, almost any occasion.
Kick is and was a great album in the 80's. I still listen to those songs today. Michael being the quintessential front man with amazing talent and mystique and sex appeal and Andrew has extraordinary composing talent. The two together made beautiful music that withstands the tests of time.
My favourite is “Beautiful Girl”. I listen to it on repeat often driving home in the early morning after a gig. 🙏❤️
Thank you thank you thank you! INXS is far and away the greatest and most underappreciated big bands of all time. Imagine that they're not in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame. I never stopped listening to them all these years and have only come to appreciate them more. Michael hutchence is perhaps one of the Great lead singers of all time and yet no one pays him the homage he is due May he rest in peace. What a brilliant band INXS were & remain historically. Rock with ska, funk, 70's/80's/90's new wave, ballads & just about anything else you can imagine thrown into the mix to create an amazing stew of musical magic. Some outstanding sounds from the world at large that remains memorable. One of Australia's gifts to the world. Always missed & not forgotten Michael Hutchence.

As a young teenager in the late 60's and early 70's, I was a rocker from the early days. Then, the 80's came around and the "new wave" of music started coming on. I couldn't understand it, because it was so different. It was this song and this band that opened me up to start appreciating that "new wave" of music. It took a long time to really embrace and enjoy that style, but this song was the start. However, in 1988, for me, it was all about Van Halen and Def Leppard. Okay, technically, Hysteria was released in 1987, but the music from that album filled the air waves through 1988. BTW, I've been binge watching your channel for 4 days now since I discovered your channel, and I'm exhausted from crying so much when you speak so eloquently about the music that is so personal to me. I love you, man! You put into words how I feel but could never express it like you do. You touch the very core of my soul. We are a kindred spirit and I salute you!
💯. I grew up on classic hard rock. My dad couldn't understand 80's New Wave and Pop. But over time, he began to appreciate bands like Depeche Mode, Talking Heads, and Billy Idol

So few people remember them it seems, even though they were pretty big at the time. It is a shame that there are only a few songs from each artist from within the top 40 that remain in anyone's library and so most of what we actually were hearing is now lost unless someone has a copy to share with friends. So much great music that I grew up on we will never hear played anywhere because people have forgotten about it and there's nothing around to remind us since the radio stations didn't keep the other 8-13 songs off a given album that they didn't overplay for 3 months straight. Most of what remains are the songs I got so burned out on that I never wanted to hear them again. In some cases time and distance from them has made it all more palatable for me again. Though I have never felt that way about anything from INXS or The Fix for that matter.

I LOVE INXS… since I heard Don’t Change I just loved them. I wish I had all their vinyl but that was a band my buddy got the records of, we’d swap cassette tapes of different bands.

There were two times that I went to the theatres before the pandemic, and will never regret...going to see the remastered 'Live Baby Live' and watching Mystify...both left me in tears at the end.
“The one thing” to me is the breakthrough song at the peak of new wave music where INXS said “ I dare you to try and label us whatever genre people were referring them as. Square Pegs was on tv, Adam Ant was a superstar if you can believe that now that it’s 40 years later and INXS was charting their future. Another grand slam Professor. ❤️🔥⭐️

One thing about INXS that always stood out to me was how many cool intros they had to songs. It's something that is surprisingly hard to come up with.

my favorite song from the 80's is Don't Change by INXS. I didnt think i could narrow it down b/c i love so many, but that one just rings true in my ears every time.
The realisation of just how good INXS was back in the 80's & 90's is now a growing phenomenon , their legend will continue to grow as a new generation of people discover this mighty Aussie band .
My wife and her siblings all went to school with those blokes. Great guys.They even went back to “Davidson High” and did a mini concert after they made it big. Says a lot about them. Very grounded guys
I’ve just read all the comments. I can’t believe that no one has mentioned WELCOME TO WHEREVER YOU ARE. To me easily their best album and ALL AROUND and NOT ENOUGH TIME are killer songs.
INXS is one of my favorite bands. I played the heck out of Kick and it still holds up to this day. Thank you for this episode and PLEASE do more on them!

INXS are timeless. Kiss the dirt, great song. It’s a shame in Australia that we have a bit of a tall poppy syndrome. When inxs made it huge overseas we forgot about them a bit. Welcome to Wherever you are, I think, is their masterpiece. Start to finish it just flows. Baby don’t cry is amazing. And elegantly wasted deserved much better chart success. Great album too. Who knows what was to be next. It’s sad it had to end. They were a great group.

Great interview , so much music history that I didn’t know about regarding Kick and his observation about where early country stars were coming from as far as their points of view is spectacular.
I am one of the fortunate ones to have had the pleasure of running into Michael Hutchence several times and quite unexpectedly at the American Music Awards back in '89 and he was a humble, gentle, kind and a bit shy gentleman who I will never forget nor his kiss.
Great interview with one of my favorite bands. Too bad Michael Hutchence died. In 1986, my friend and I camped out overnight too get tickets for INXS in the front row. I still recall that concert today maybe that is why I love this band so much. It was the Listen Like Thieves Tour, great album another underrated album was The Swing album. Knowing that they probably will not tour anymore makes me sad.
This whole album is gold. Mystify in particular is still one of my favorite songs ever.
Saw INXS in Seattle for the Kick tour. One of my favorite concerts of all time from beginning to end!

On Sept 9th, 1997, I sat front row with 10' in front of me to jam out. It was at Sunrise Musical Theater, Sunrise, FL (Fort Lauderdale) . Michael Hutchence was such an amazing singer that I told my wife to be, "He is better then Mick Jagger" I witnessed one of his last performances, I believe his last in the USA. Then we know he died on Nov 9th, 1997. Drugs SUCK. If he would have lived, they would have changed music as we know it.
He didn’t die from drugs or any $ado-auto erotic perversity as portrayed by the media. He was taken out in the same manner as at least 20 celebs before him who were about to spill the beans on the establishment’s perverse crimes. Minutes before his assassination, the people in the next hotel room heard a loud, angry, violent argument between Hutchence and another man…evidence which never saw the light of day. It was a warning to other celebs to tow the line or else.

Uh, no on three counts. Not their last show in the States. There was at least a handful more here in the States, at least. And no he did not die on Nov 9th. It was November 22nd. (The same day as JFK, C.S. Lewis and Aldous Huxley) And lastly he did not die from drugs.

I was able to see INXS a couple of times. I saw this tour, it was Sept. 19th in Boston, MA. The show was fantastic, and Michael was fantastic. He came out in a dark 3 piece suit and as the night progressed he slowly stripped out of his suit. He finished his clothing take down with the song "Building Bridges" which had the perfect lyrics to match it. Please don't forget the impact of Michaels TBI on everything. It changes the perspective of his legacy and he deserves to have that! RIP.

Given INXS is my favorite band. Kick is perfection but their albums "INXS", and "Shabooh Shoobah", show why they had so much and only one way to go, the stars. 🤘🎸
