Koalas Train To Cuddle World Leaders At G20

- With less than two weeks to the G20 Summit in Brisbane, some of the city's most famous locals are in training for the chance to meet, greet - and cuddle - the world's most powerful leaders.
A number of koalas from Brisbane's Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary are in training for a once in a lifetime opportunity - to potentially be cuddled by leaders such as Barack Obama, Angela Merkel, and perhaps even Vladimir Putin.
There are over 100 koalas at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, many of which are no strangers to cozying up to celebrities and have had their pictures snapped with A-listers such as Roger Federer, John Travolta, Mariah Carey, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj - to name a few.

When I went to Lone Pine in the 1980's I was far more impressed with the range and size of their Dingo Collection.
Dingoes from everywhere man! Dingoes that look exactly like wild dingoes, and dingoes that look exactly like cattle-dogs.

Its too bad we can't hold them at the San Francisco Zoo...or at least ive never heard nor seen any videos with zoo-goers petting them.

While I was over there in Australia at the animal parks I could talk to the animals and get them to do what I wanted them to do even to get an eagle to fly down off its perch and lay flat on its tummy on the ground with its wings spread out looking at me like it was acknowledging me and the people around were just watching with amazed in what was happening so they just stood back taking photos even with the koalas and the only white peacock I've ever seen was there in Australia ferndale park in NSW Australia so what I'm getting at is I should get a job in Australia working with the animals is my next adventure hahaha

The Koalas don't look happy in that zoo.
Unknown They look..like sleepy koalas. And since koalas sleep up to 22 hrs a day, that seems about right.
The Real Deal seriously 22hours a day. And I thought teen boys took the record.
That's just how koalas usually look, for 2 very important reasons: first, as the other comment said, koalas sleep almost all the time. Literally. They get all of their food and the majority of their water from eucalyptus leaves, which have next to no nutritional value and take a tremendous amount of time and energy to digest because they're extremely poisonous. Koalas spend a few hours a day cramming their faces with every eucalyptus leaf they can find, and when they physically cannot fit one more leaf inside their bellies the koalas ACTUALLY stuff their faces - they fill pouches in both cheeks with even more leaves to be eaten later. Then it's time to sleep while their bodies get down to the extremely difficult task of turning all that poison into juuuuuust enough fuel to get through another day. They sleep almost all day and then snooze on and off while foraging. Maybe take a nice long nap before bed to round out the day.
Oh. And they're also nocturnal. And this was filmed in broad daylight. So.... these koalas are not depressed. They're just, ya know, koalas.

It's hard to tell if a Koala is depressed, sleepy or high on eucalyptus!
Sanctuaries mostly rescue animals and work very hard to recreate the natural environment for them🙂.
Ok so I had already typed up a fairly lengthy reply to this comment, which is good because it gave me time to calm down. I've done you the favor of deleting that angry and disgusted rant in favor of posting this comment instead. Its a good opportunity to learn something and I sincerely hope you take advantage of it. The only angry sentence I'm going to leave in is this one, which I've actually toned down considerably: perhaps you should do even 3 minutes of research into a subject before you decide to post an uninformed comment like this and leave yourself open to criticism.
These are neither poor creatures nor enslaved nor depressed. I'll spare you the lecture about koala lifestyles (although I did teach a bit of a lesson on the subject in response to another under-informed post a few comments ago if you're interested) and just say that:
*koalas sleep up to 22 hours a day and
*koalas are nocturnal
So what you see here are perfectly healthy and well adjusted koalas going about the exact same routines they would in the wild. A koala that is actually depressed would be curled up in a ball on the ground, face down. Certainly not eating and allowing people to handle it.
Which brings me to my next and most important point: the majority of these koalas are actually rescues who lost their mothers so young that they had to be hand-raised by human volunteers. That is an EXTREMELY hands-on long-term job that includes carring the tiny joey around in a makeshift pouch strapped to your belly EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY DAY. And they have to be fed EVERY TWO HOURS. EVERY DAY. FOR AS MUCH AS NINE MONTHS.
Now what kind of koala do you think that creates? I'll tell you: the kind that trusts humans implicitly and hasn't learned to fight its own kind or escape from predators. The kind that is completely unsuited to fending for itself in the wild and who will likely spend most of its time returning to populated areas looking for all the love and care they know humans can provide. This makes them extremely vulnerable to being hit by cars or attacked by dogs or drowning in pools or being electrocuted or....! The horrible possibilities are endless.
But there is something that these koalas CAN do that wild ones would never dream of: they can be little ambassadors who enchant every person they meet and help spread awareness about the plight of their wild cousins. I think they excel at it.
