This game always manages to bring a tear or two to my eyes. You just don't see games like this any more - well maybe you do, but this crowd is going nuts! Hysterical classic game from two classic teams - not mention great commentating from Rex. I truly miss & cherish the ole Lidcombe Oval. Go Wests!
Remember this game like it was yesterday. Although I was born and bred around Lidcombe and a Magpie fanatic moved to northern beaches in my early 20's and Rex was a regular customer in the shop I worked at. Many years on he reckoned this was one of the best games he had seen. Thanks for posting this classic footage.
Western Suburbs 17 (Geoff Foster 2, Graeme O'Grady tries; Ron Giteau 4 goals) defeated South Sydney 13 (Bernie Lowther, George Piggins, Terry Fahey tries; Greg Purcell 2 goals) That try by George Piggins was absolutely inspirational. George Piggins is inspirational himself.
And the first thing you did was try to grab one of the black and white corner post made from cardboard, and by the time you grabbed it it was in 10 pieces
I was on the bike track with a couple of friends. We were up the northern end ( left as the game was shown) I recall Wests had problems after the game from the sponsors, as all of us blocked the advertising on the inside of the fence. Great game and great memories -- shame we lost.
Great memories, I was at Lidcombe Oval that day, as a 8-year-old kid. I can still vividly remember George Piggins' bullocking run, which resulted in his try.
That classic soundbyte of Rex calling the Piggins try used to be on channel 7's Sportsworld's rugby league segment back in the early 90's. I was born in 76 so a bit young to remember this match, but my first NSWR(F)L match was also a Maggies vs Souths match of the day at Lidcombe in 1982.
WOW I remember this game I was 14 years old somewhere near halfway there were so many people at the game that security let all the kids over the fence and I remember sitting about 2 meters from the side line, was disappointed about souths being defeated but it was a very good game and I wist I could get a copy of the hole game.
Was this the game Mullins caught a short kickoff in to keep possession for the Maggies? I recall he did that in a game with a spill over crowd back then.
Slow reply, but yes, fellow traveller! This was the game and it felt like it turned the match when Souths didn’t regain possession. I was about 10 yards away right in line with him. It was a freakish catch under incredible pressure.
Yes this seems like it was a very good game. But I'm going to put my hand up now as a very PROUD🏈 South Sydney Rabbitoh Supporter🏈. That I do have to give this a thumbs down👎👎👎 as we did lose the game and since i cannot blame the referee for our loss I'll just blame the western suburbs magpies players who were very, very, very, very, did I say VERY DIRTY at the TIME
Not really. Wests didn't start to live and die by the biff until 78. South pack in this era was fearsome, John O'Neil (didn't play) Piggins and Readon, you could not slow them down with a sledgehammer.
Very ironic a Souths supporter calling Wests players dirty. The Rabbitohs forward thug pack led by John O'Neil were the dirty team no one bangs on about because they won premierships
I would love to see the full game.
Thanks for posting this legendary game.
Go the Magpies.!

A bit like the old Hull FC v Hull KR games

Some big names there for the Magpies, South’s too. Rex you were a wonder

Rex mossop is always the master. Ray Warren was a distant 2nd to Rex.
Awesome highlights: fantastic crowd. Just brilliant to watch - I was 8 at the time & never forgotten George Piggans try.
Rex would not cope with today's world lol
Anyone who told Rex to wear a mask would have been told in no uncertain terms to @#$& off.
Imagine Rex and the Manly "pride" jumpers.
Actually, it was Rd 7 not Rd 13. Great game back when footy was footy.
Exciting Game.
Both Wests and Souths played well.
Those were the days.
I loved the days when the crowd swarmed onto the field at the final whistle. Added to the atmosphere and always felt great seeing everyone so happy .
And the first thing you did was try to grab one of the black and white corner post made from cardboard, and by the time you grabbed it it was in 10 pieces
The Western Suburbs Magpies home crowd invaded the ground like a flock of Magpies after the match. Hahaha!🦅🦅
Today's crowd don't show passion like this crowd. Why.??.
Rex Mossop is at his mighty best as a commentator during this famous match and after the match!!

This was Rex Mossop's all time favourite match!

I noticed that when the referee blew the whistle for the penalty they're was know arguing back with the referee like it goes on today unfortunately

Was this lidcome oval?
I have been trying to find videos of the old Redfern oval but cannot anywhere.

oh well’76 finish was far better than the spoon they collected in ‘75☝🏻
i havnt noticed any of your souths players becoming saints or winning humanitarian awards ??
@@simonainscough619 i agree magies didn’t hide anything anyway, it was all there to see
