I would love to see Balmain & wests at Leichhardt in 1978 I was there my dad was involved in the biggest brawl on the hill ever & they showed a bit of it because it was the big league Sunday t.v. Game 👍 thanks for the 1979 we v Balmain at Leichhardt 👍
This game feels weird, the players look goofy, the game is slow and souths look terrible in those shorts. A place kick used by souths to find touch? I know that's how they used to don it, but it just looks like a waste of time.
@@retrorugbyleague234 Oh yeah i could see the Gibson influence at every ruck players spinning in one direction and passing it in another. I reckon a lot of innovations that Gibson tried were just terrible but looked good because no one else was smart enough to actually evolve the game we see nowadays tactically back then, so crap like this stood out. I follow AFL and this rubbish, like kicking across the field for a penalty is considered low % rubbish, that it works once every 100 times tried. I reckon Gibson was overrated, even though he coached my side to 3 in a row. By the time he coached the Sharks and NSW in the late 80s he was shown up for the avg coach he was. It's a weird one for sure, gibbo.
Things to keep in mind. Only had a 5 meter rule back then so the game was not as open. You could only have 15 in your squad and the two replacements had to have played at least half a game in reserve grade to be eligible, and training was nothing like it is today so fatigue took a much bigger toll after about the first 20 minutes. You pretty much had to pace yourself, to try and have something in the tank in the last quarter of the game
Best games ..legend caller

Awesome game
I would love to see that other Magpies v South’s at Lidcombe. Sell out crowd. Bicycle track full. Piggins scored the try of the year

The place kick for touch was a tactic used by Jack Gibson who was coaching souths at the time.Imo i thought it was a waste of time.
