    This is a quick "how to" style breakdown on how I bullet journal for increased clarity and productivity.
    I recognize that this is a bit unconventional, and different that what most bullet journals look like. Just wanted to share my methods and maybe get some feedback from some of you!
    Here's the journal that I recommended in the video on Amazon (affiliate link). Just love the feel and their simplicity: geni.us/lFhBu0

    I absolutely can't get over how well this is produced, on a visual, design and cinematic level. Neutral harmonic colors, balance in contrast and subjects and objects in the frame, use of the rule of thirds, natural plus artifical lighting, even down to your clothes and your face. Thank you for putting in that extra effort dude. Love it.

    This was absolutely fantastic. The “why” is revolutionary for someone like me, who has a laundry list of things that I *should* do, but lose sight of the things that I *need* to do. Also, the weekly review is brilliant! I’ve owned by own business for over seven years now and, since I work nights and weekends and holidays, I find myself sometimes afloat, clueless of what day it is or when the week or even month began. This is fantastic for feeling more contained and accomplished, since it’ll help keep my days from blending seamlessly into each other until it feels like I accomplish nothing... thank you so so so very much!!!

    Short and medium term goals are very good, and should be the focus, but my experience is that people who don't also have long term goals, one year, five year, and ten year seem to be the best three, almost never get to where they want to be in life.
    Success rarely happens by accident. If you want to be living a certain lifestyle in five years, or be living in a certain place in foive years, or ten years, then you need to have that goal written down, and you need to work toward it. Things don't have to happen exactly as you plan. In fact, long term planning and long term goals often cancel each other out. It's what you do TODAY that allows you to achieve long term goals, not what you plan to do next month. But unless you have a long term goal that pretty specific, what you do today isn't going to get you there.

    • @nathanieldrew
      @nathanieldrew  5 ปีที่แล้ว +126

      I really appreciate that feedback. I am complete agreement with you. I just personally find that my focus right now is best placed on little wins, on building things a little more each day. For me, a lofty goal or long-term challenge can seem overwhelming if not broken down in smaller pieces. In that sense, my long term goals live in the back of my mind while I focus on what I need to do this week or this month. Anyway, I really appreciate you watching this video and leaving such a thoughtful response.

    • @vincentizghra6144
      @vincentizghra6144 5 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      For me, long term goals break my stride and splits my focus from what I can do now to get better. It often turns into a constant comparison between where I am now and where I want to be. This takes my energy away from my medium term goals(which can be something like "finish a music project" or "finish learning the most common words in arabic" or whatever it may be). When my goal NEEDS to be specific it tends to turn my anxiety dial to 11 and I end up losing good habits while gaining bad ones.
      I need to stay grounded, with a vague direction. I know approximately what I want to do and take the steps I think will eventually lead me there. But the condition is that I must enjoy the process, which I simply can't do when I worry about where I will be in 5-10 years. It seems possible that people work differently in this regard because I've heard(and tried it) so many times.

    • @rightyboywilson4911
      @rightyboywilson4911 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think a good idea is to briefly check in on long term goals every few months but mostly break it down into much smaller tasks that work towards that big goal without having it be all big and scary

      According to the Myers-Briggs "personality test"/type indicator, "people experience the world using four principal psychological functions - sensation, intuition, feeling, and thinking - and one of these four functions is dominant for a person most of the time. The four categories are Introversion/Extraversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perception." Without going into detail, the last category makes the distinction between people who (between other traits) tend to prefer plans- Judging, and people who prefer staying open to the options and keeping plans to a minimum- Perception.
      In my experience, I'm the last one, meaning that although i do like one year plans (sort of) for some stability, and planning throughout my days/weeks to not get lost, plans longer than that make more harm than good, as they stress me and make me feel constrained. What actually keeps me motivated, rather than plans, is precisely not knowing and there for everything is possible, enjoying my life on a day to day basis, but in a way that will increase instead of limit my future options, and I'll only choose when i actually have to.
      I understand your point, and know it is true for a lot of people, there are also a lot of us who not only dont necessarily know where they want to be, in a way that they can "write it down and work towards it" (at least i sort of know but in a more holistic/general way), but also we dont want to know, as it stresses us, and its the possibilities that motivate us.

  • @BarteNERDS

    So, I've legitimately *started* SO MANY of these kinds of processes in the last two years. I've even recorded myself starting them planning on making videos like this later on down the road to show my progress. Like, a hundred things. Painting, Mandarin, music, sketching, video editing, and a bunch of other stuff.
    And for the last two years I've gone in and out of dabbling with all of them, and been basically useless. The last few weeks I've finally started buckling down and actually getting somewhere in all of my goals but still not committing nearly the amount of attention I've needed to.
    I JUST came across this channel last night on the way to the bar I've worked at for 7 years and have gotten into such a rut that it's what caused this sudden drive to GTFO of this life I'm in. My goal has ALWAYS been exactly what you call being a "digital nomad".
    I can't even lie, all night during my shift I've been half jealous/half angry at myself for not committing and doing what you're doing years ago. But I'm halfway through this video and all I can think about is what a huge influence you've been in just the last 12 hours.
    Your videos are so real that they just hit me in all the places where I've needed the motivation to actually follow through on all these promises I made to myself years ago.
    You were just the right channel I needed in my life at this junction. Keep up the fantastic work. You inspire us all.

    I love having a daily habit tracker of some kind. I often get so busy that the days blur together, so keeping track of how on top of a certain task I have been (i.e. making my bed, working out, studying a language, etc.) is really helpful. The simplicity of yours is amazing. If it's too complicated, no one will use it!

    I am all about lists and daily to-dos, but I've never thought to write down the "why" behind each task; even though it's there in my head, putting it to paper will really solidify it. I also love, love the idea of summarizing each day, week, and month. I think it will allow me to really identify places for improvement and growth and help me to be more mindful of how I'm spending my time. I've gotten so much value from this video; thanks for sharing it!

    Setting year goals drastically changed my life. I think even though a year out can be hard to visualize, it helps to have annual quantitative deliverables so that even if you don’t hit them you at least trend in the right direction. I did this for one year before I even had a journal. This year I not only set year goals but started writing down my days which turned into planning days,weeks, months, and even setting quarter goals. Again that’s just what worked for me but as long as you’re writing down anything you’ll see a dramatic improvement in your life and where you want to be. Great video man.

    I love to change the color of my journal papers every once a month (not just the design). Sometimes I'll have light blue, sometimes a fluorescent yellow. I feel like it helps my brain take in the info written down in a more new and refreshed way!
    As always, beautiful vids😊

      The art, calligraphy, washi tape bullet journals, for me, would become an end, instead of a means to an end. One can spend many hours making a hobby out of a bullet journal. To each his/her own. With some tweaking to maximize the BuJo to what *works* best for me, I still just gravitate back to Ryder Carroll's original intention and demonstrated when he created, and began to market, his bullet journal system. It's great for me.

    I've done to-do lists but what worked for me is time-blocking. Helped me keep from listing too many or too few things for my day. I also go the opposite direction, I go from general or long-term goals to specific daily tasks that contribute to achieving those goals.
    What I still can't do is self-reflection. I tend to just look forward all the time, what I need to do now and tomorrow and next year etc. But I never really look back on myself - my success and failures, what I could have done better, what I should have stopped doing... Gotta get into that habit! I saw a good spread on doing a quarterly review and preview. Quarterly is great because it's not too high-res that I feel like I'm micro-managing myself, nor is it too long a period for me to forget milestones and failures. Might work for me :)
    It always impresses me how different things work for different people.

    Other sections I try using daily for my journal are 'optimize' for the following day (specific improvements like: 30 min of watching netflix instead of 1 h) and 'grateful' ( a couple of things I felt grateful for throughout the day).
    Also, I really like the idea of adding a why to every task, thank you for sharing that!

    Love this approach. It's not only simplistic and straightforward but I really like the fact that it encourages you to audit yourself...which we don't do enough. We think we do....but most of the time we are just procrastinating and then we judge ourselves for not being productive...which isn't as effective as really auditing yourself by analyzing your habits. I will try your method for myself and I'm going to try to incorporate a section at the end of the week where I write a short list of how I can make next week better or something to that effect. Thank you so much for this video 👍👍👍

    I’ve been bullet journalling for 3 years now, and I love seeing how everyone customises their journals to suit them. My partner’s is very different to mine, as we have different concerns.
    Mine has evolved to bare bones as has yours, only I don’t split the page. I create square boxes for a thing to do, colour it in when completed, and on the next line I just creat a bullet point for a discussion point or reflection or a jot down note. It works for me, because if I don’t write things down as they come, I forget. I might get 3 days to a page; however one day may run over 3 pages, depending on notes taken from a meeting or a very full day. I use the back of my journal for list making.
    True about Goals, but it is good to reflect and write a new list every time you start a new book, because Life interrupts. Just by acknowledging your dreams, you may notice small changes moving towards them. Don’t just write your end goal, you have to list how to realistically arrive at that goal - and one day you just might...

    The "why" next to the to do list is a very good idea. I am currently in my bottom mood (no energy, difficulties to remotivate) and am rethinking the direction I want to take in life.
    My weekly set-up is currently 2 pages: 1 page = 3 days up and 3 days down in long rectangles. The last 3 lines of every days are B, L, D (breakfast, lunch, dinner).
    My second side is:
    Up: the last day of the week with the same layout + a box with 5x5 rectangles (3,3,1 and one long) that's where I track my sleeping (time+ thoughts on it+ a symbol to express my mood/clarity when I wake up), the longer rectangle is for my thoughts on the week was I productive with that sleepschedule? What is on my mind etc.
    Down: I have a task list: the main things I should focus on that week.
    Also I have a color code (4 colors) one for each category: leasure, have to do, studying, courses. So I can view quickly if my days are balanced. It's the only touch of color on my weekly as I have a minimalistic Bujo.

    I plan projects every 5 years. I also declutter every 5 years. Five years is long enough to explore and expand on a certain topic and long enough for it to become second nature. It's just the right amount of time, but not too lengthy. Of course, no matter what I'm doing, I'm always thinking of what I want or need to do next. Planning is expedient and efficient.

    I have a side journal in which I write three principles I want to integrate/embody in my life, every morning (as soon as I wake up). Usually I do that using empowering phrases, simple and direct, speaking as if that principle was already in me (ex. "I'm full of energy and discipline" or "I'm getting closer to the life I want for me" - stuff like that.)
    It keeps me light and reminds me always of the bright side that can always come into play whatever challenge you face.

    I've moved from a classic fixed page journal a loose leaf note book with binder and divider. It was a game changer for me. In my job and in my hobbies I learn things at different rates so the ability re arrange pages and categorise them makes things so much easier.
    I'm still huge fan of BuJo syntax and habit tracker logging style but I don't miss farming about with spread out topics resulting in complicated indexes.
