Richard was a grandfather who meant well, even if it backfired. He wanted lorelai and Rory to be happy and safe and he was a little warped on his idea of how that could happened, but overall understanding. He bonded with Rory over literature and lorelai over work, and they eventually became close again. He was strong-willed, stern at times, but he loved his girls and wife. Edward herrmann was the best choice to play him.

if you notice that Logan was the only one of Rory's boyfriends where Marriage was ever mentioned.. Not Dean, Not Jess, Not the forgettable guy in the remake.. It was just logan, the subject of marriage came up several times before he proposed. His family, her family, etc..

It's a great line but I enjoyed more Richard's and Lorelai's Line. They had a really complex line. Many feelings being hold for years, and they said a lot many taimes without saying even one word... Great actor, great performance!!

Come on, watch a little more attentively! The Gilmores and the Huntzbergers had been friends for years. Logan knows the man privately and was instructed by Richard himself to call him that. Otherwise, a well-mannered young man like Logan would have never just taken the liberty to call a respectable older man like Mr. Gilmore by his first name, don't you think?!
I believe the show writers did that on purpose to show that logan is familiar with and grew up in the world Emily and Richard live in. I believe they did it to foreshadow what happens later in the series when rory chooses to live in that world with logan as well however only temporarily (thank Dumbledore).
I loved Rory's relationship with Richard. R.I.P. Edward Herrmann, you are sorely missed.
I love this scene, and Logan's expressions while Richard is talking are hilarious. Plus, after the prank he pulled, it was well deserved.
