  • BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A TOYOTA YARIS FROM OSV: bit.ly/2H1Sog6
In MK4 model form, the Toyota Yaris has been further Europeanised with sharper styling, a better quality interior, improved media connectivity and significant changes to its segment-leading hybrid engine. What was already a class act has just become genuinely hard to overlook.
    Background
If you were asked to name the cars vying for the title of best supermini, it would be a reasonable wager that the Toyota Yaris wouldn't be amongst your top three. If, on the other hand, you had to name a small car that would be trouble-free, cheap to run and easy to use, it would be right up there. The thing is, those criteria are exactly what many supermini buyers are looking for. They don't care if the car can't take the Esses at Donington flat without lapsing into understeer. It's an irrelevance for most but car magazines still put a huge priority on handling and award their 'best of' titles predominantly on which cars are most fun to drive at the limit.
The Yaris has always been a supermini that works well in the real world and this fourth generation car is no exception. It has long lacked a bit of flair though, and Toyota has belatedly realised this, endowing the latest model with a lot more styling input, as well as engineering improvements. It's now exclusively a self-charging hybrid.
    Driving Experience
Here, Yaris buyers won't get the conventional 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre petrol engines offered with the car in other markets. That's because the brand thinks customers will want the self-charging hybrid version. This electrified variant features a new 1.5-litre petrol powertrain mated to a CVT auto transmission that's claimed to be more linear in response than the old Yaris Hybrid 'rubber band'-like set-up. The electrified petrol engine is 1490cc in size but has the same bore, stroke and piston size as the 2.0-litre hybrid unit that Toyota uses in the Corolla. Maximum engine power is 90hp, the combined system output is 114hp and there's 120Nm of torque. This car makes 62mph in 10.5s en route to 109mph.
The brand reckons that the new lithium-ion battery will be able to drain and recharge more quickly than the previous unit, which means that it will be able to provide more of an electric surge through the 79hp electric motor. As a result, the company expects that over 80% of urban journeys in this car will be able to be completed under electric power alone. On all models, ride quality should be better thanks to suspension tweaks and a considerably more rigid body.
    Design and Build
The Yaris takes its styling influence from the current Corolla family hatch, the panel work adopting various creases to give it some extra flair. Pronounced blister feature over the wheel arches, plus there's complex surfacing over the rear doors - and the car is both lower and wider than its predecessor. Unusually and against the current trend, this MK4 design is actually slightly smaller than the one it replaces, measuring in at 3,940mm - most supermini rivals are over 4 metres long. As usual, of more importance is the stuff you can't see - namely the new generation 'GA-B' platform this car sits upon.
Inside, you'll notice features more commonly seen in larger cars, including a large 10-inch centre-dash infotainment touchscreen. 'Apple CarPlay'/'Android Auto' smartphone-mirroring is standard. There's also a further TFT information display between the two instrument binnacle gauges. The driver's seat positions you a little lower than before (36mm lower to be exact) and there are plenty of soft-touch materials around the cabin. The dashboard has been made slimmer and is set lower, with a wider and higher centre console. The driver's instrument binnacle has twin digital meters flanking the TFT multi-information display, and is presented with a shallow hood. Last, but not least, the steering wheel size has been reduced. The rear part of the cabin isn't especially spacious, but the boot area is of a versatile size and is enhanced by a variable-height boot floor.

6:51 It's a CVT, but with a different construction than a regular CVT. There are no belts, only a planetary gear set that combines the engine and the electric motors. It doesn't have any clutches either. Therefore, the transmission doesn't suffer from problems often associated with CVTs, like drive belts breaking or slipping. In fact, the Toyota eCVT is one of the most reliable transmissions ever made, proven by its popularity in taxicabs.

It is by far the best presentation of the Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid than any other channel.
This presentation helped me a lot so that I finally decided to buy this car.
Although the video was a bit long, it solved all my questions, but all the questions I had down to the last detail.
    Great job, awesome presentation. *****

Just ordered one. I have to say that Toyota has taken a big step forward with this model. How it drives and how the drivetrain works is much better than in previous model. The hybrid is much better than normal 1.5. The engine doesn't have so high rpm while you accelerate and mpg is better. It also seems to have more useable power than normal 1.5. In my country the price is only 1500€ higher. That you can easily save having lower running costs. What comes to reliability, nothing beats Toyota. You can be sure that this car will do just fine after the warranty expires. I wouldn't be so sure if that's the case with it's many rivals.

Very informative review as usual. One observation on the CVT gearbox. There is no belt in this system. It’s a planetary gear set and because it works similarly to a conventional CVT they called it e-CVT. I agree that the 17 inch models have firmer ride therefore it’s crucial to make sure that the tyre pressure is set correctly. It’s a brilliant car by the way.

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, ride comfort for my next car is important as the roads round town are dreadful. Far too many potholes, broken sections of tarmac, poorly filled trenches across the road, you bang over so much its really 4x4 territory but I haven’t the room to park or the money for a Land Cruiser. Smaller wheels are the key with any car for ride comfort. A BMW 1 series for example, most have larger wheels, the ride is too hard and sometimes with some makes and models, bigger wheels look worse anyway than the standard smaller alloys. Looks much better on the 1 series with smaller wheels, the body shape looks more balanced. Rides far nicer.

Hi, My name is Camillo Leighio. I am from the uk. I have always liked the Toyota Yaris, I have been driving the Yaris since 2005 and I have never had any problems with it. I often see cars like the Ford Fiesta, vw polo and Renault Clio and they do look nice but the stories I hear about them breaking down and people have problems with them. Regards of the new Yaris, you can have both now, it looks great but it still maintains the excellent reliability from the previous generation. I know it starts at a high price but the amount of standard equipment you get and the efficient engine results in cheap ownership. Despite it not being the biggest in class, it still is big enough.

A good and very detailed review, but it's worth pointing out that the Android Auto - at least in UK models up to Design spec (not sure about the higher specs) - doesn't do wireless. You need a cable to use it. It's a bit of a pain having to plug in to navigate, but at least it keeps the phone charged...

You see what I wrote almost a year ago... but:
Eleven months ago we were very enthusiastic about the new Yaris Hybrid and planned to replace our then four and a half year old Yaris Hybrid with this new one in the summer. This choice seemed like a no-brainer!
Until we had a proper look in the showroom at our dealer and found out that the new Yaris is not exactly a practical car. Really a pity because we really were satisfied with our Yaris and liked what the new one looked like.
Shown here (from 23:47), is that the rear doors only open very limited. I would say a crack... With the driver seat arranged for me (1.83 m.) and when I squeezed myself in through that crack, I'm poking in the front seat with my knees....
Don't even think about installing a child seat through those doors and let's better not talk about getting a kid in that chair... 😠
We also had already thought of the new Honda Jazz Hybrid in the back of our minds and also watched the video, in which OSV tested the Jazz.
Among other things, we compared the space in the back of the Yaris in this video with what it looks like in the Jazz in this video: th-cam.com/video/Z8GL1tLXv48/w-d-xo.html (from 23: 18) Maybe watch from beginning till the end...😉
Than we decided to take both for an extensive test drive. Anyone who is faced with that choice should do so! And discover that good looks don't mean "the best".
Here the winner was clearly the Jazz: quieter, more comfortable, much better visibility, more space and "sense of space" because of the light interior and the big windows. Next to this the materials in the interior of the Jazz also gave a better "quality impression".
And let's better not talk about how practical the Jazz is compared to the Yaris....
If you compare the reviews, it is 100% clear that they confirm what we discovered during the test drives. And next to what I wrote here we concluded that of these two small hybrids, only the Jazz is suitable as a family car, the Yaris (unfortunately) not.
You can probably guess which car now is the successor of our Yaris...
Correct!!! For more than 5 months we have been driving with great pleasure and satisfaction in that spacious, comfortable and economical Jazz!

To be fair, very few pay for built navigation in this segment, why would they when you can take it with you and use it to navigate out of the car, too? No problem pre-downloading maps, I've been asking Toyoya sales members about Android Auto for years, finally, Toyota has got the message! Even my local Toyota dealership says that they sell virtually no built-in navigation.
It's just a bit odd having the button there, but the unit will be generic.
I've had a drive of the Design Hybrid, nice, but I think I'll miss "driving" over letting the CVT do it for me!

    • @oddities-whatnot
      @oddities-whatnot 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thats where we are in a dilemma. Diesel cars are falling out of favour, petrol engines with any sort of decent power are typically poorer on MPG round town, it leaves hybrids as the only option apart from full EV status if you need decent economy out of a new car. Its sometimes wise to keep hold of an older car if it still works and does decent MPG, plus no monthly payments on one either if you owned it for years. Im scratching my head as to what car next for me. One I can keep for many years and do everything I need.

Great review! I am about to go for this Yaris hybrid or the new Renault Clio hybrid but sure if getting any of these is a wise decision, considering that the car will only be driven at weekends. That means about 3000 miles a year max. Do I stick with the petrol model for the next 8 years before the ban? I've been warned that hybrid cars are best for regular users due to battery issues. I have always been a fan of Toyota and like the look of the new Yaris. However the Yaris along with other car brands of this size are way too expensive @ 20k plus. I know there is a lot of new technology gone in to the Yaris, but I believe a price range starting at 17k topping out at 20k (UK pounds) for the top model is what these small cars are worth. Also I have seen other videos of the Yaris that have commented on its poor build quality for example very thin bendy steel on the bodywork, the trim edge falling off the screen on the dash and the doors closing with a tinny clang. Surely the aforementioned are not worthy of a 20k plus Toyota. As usual a very informative review thankyou.

You get more standard equipment with the yaris and there may be more space in the back and boot of the polo, that wont really bother me.
In terms of engines, the yaris is miles ahead from the polo. In the yaris, you get a 1.5 engine and in the polo, you get a 1.0. The yaris is not just more fuel efficient but it is cleaner too. The vw polo has 115 bhp with 107 c02 and the yaris has 114 bhp with 92 c02.

Great video but just one observation: B mode in Toyota's ecvt has to be used for driving in downhill.. it uses the engine brake and dissipates the energy in order not to overload the battery. • @johnkeepin7527

@@davidbesant When going down long downhill stretches without B mode in use, when the battery is fully charged (doesn’t take long on the 2017 model with a 0.9 kWh one), one is back into friction braking, with the wear and tear and potential overheating, so it’s often wise to use B. I’m used to that on the previous one built in 2017. Incidentally, when using B, one can’t use cruise control in tandem - but it’s useful to maintain a steady speed downhill if it’s not steep enough to require B mode to be used.

I'm looking for a small, affordable car like this which would be a hybrid. However, I do not need recharge based hybrid. I need gas based car which can also be plugged to an electrical socket to be recharged in in order to get that 15% price compensation from the government. All the other plug in gas hybrids tend to be universal cars which are bigger and more roomy, but they are also more expensive. Since this car will be just for myself for foreseeable future, I do not need extra space, because I have to pay for it extra.
This car even with its new hybrid engine doesn't seem to meet this criteria which is a shame. The closest cars are in 30,000 euro range and mostly still not available in Lithuania. I'm talking about cars like Toyota Prius Prime.

It does use GPS for positioning, but your map app doesn't have the entire map downloaded. The map is pulled using the phone data. You can save area's of the map, or routes. But if you went into the middle of no where without planning, when your phone loses network signal, you can use a GPS app to see your co-ordinates sure, but the map app will not be able to download the roads. Other wise map aps would be huge. It's all cached.

According to Gov website, the reg number doesnt exist now. Probably been written off.
