  • The only writing utensils (pens, markers and highlighters) you are allowed to use with Rocketbook Everlast (Core) and Fusion erasable notebooks are the FriXion series by Pilot. So in this video, I take a look at all that the FriXion has to offer and comment on my experiences with the pens, markers and highlighters from the perspective of use in Rocketbook notebooks.

    People who make mistakes and feel the need to turn the pen around to use the eraser on the RocketBook might opt to have a couple disposable eye shadow brushes that are dedicated to the RocketBook, it allows for more precise erasing and they can be washed fairly easily with a paper towel and water.

    When I searched for this I was taking a shot in the dark 😂 I’m sooo grateful for this video! The testing on the actual product is gonna save me TONS of money when I start to look for writing tools to pair with my new planner. I have ADHD and my counselor (who also has ADHD and is certified for treating adults with ADHD) was the one to recommend RocketBook to me! He showed me the Panda Planner that he owns and all the useful prompts, and it made me really excited to try it out. but I’m glad i have this resource for choosing the right tools to go with it ❤

    So here were some things I learned. Even though the highlighters might get picked up weird from the scan you can still use them. Go to the settings of the scan in the app and choose "none" for Enhancement and the colors should remain the same. However the QR Code will still be visible as well as the dots on the paper, so it's more like a compromise. I placed some photos on the paper and after changing this the colors remained the same.

    Super helpful video! Thanks!
    If anyone is looking for a more elegant solution for their pens for use with Rocket notebooks, you could consider just buying the Pilot Frixion refills and installing them into some of the small batch pen maker designs that would accommodate them. The Pilot Frixion refills are the same size as their G2 refills, so any pen that works with a Pilot G2 refill will also work with a Frixion refill.
    As a couple of examples, the Machine Era Original pen and the Machine Era Markup both use a G2 sized refill. All of the pens (except the Mini) made by Big Idea Design will work with Pilot G2 sized refills as well. The standard sized pens made by Tactile Turn are also G2 compatible. As are Urban Survival Gear's Ti-Scribe Bolt pens. Selecting any one of these pens and loading it up with a Frixion refill is a really nice option. So even though you're stuck with Frixion ink refills, you don't have to be stuck with a cheap looking, plastic pen.

    When I ran into the problem of not being able to properly erase my Rocketbook, as a chemistry student I decided to look for a solution. I came up with a solution that works, and shared some samples at uni. However, when I offered them for sale on eBay, absolutely no one was interested! Perhaps I was too early that not many people had run into the problem. So much for great ideas! Sometimes. But thanks for advising viewers about the best use and type of pens. Many more pens there than I have seen, so I will have to investigate one or two types that sound quite interesting.

    I’m here in 2023 and just got my first m3 Rocketbooks. The Core, fusion and flip on the way.
    I really
    Love it and find the core addicting to draw and just scribble thoughts down. Before I saw your video, I went ahead from Amazon and ordered the 10 pack of multicolored clickers, which was on sale. I really like though my favorite is the capped frictions that come with the Rocketbook. Wide enough body and as a lefty it works as I don’t hook my hand. It just fits me perfect. This is a new experience for me as I love to write journal and regular paper journals but the core I can keep next to my bed at night and write thoughts down listen to sermons and it’s there. Shoot a picture or erase it it’s a lot of fun and it’s definitely in betweenmy iPad paper and still smart. Using multicolor pens to fill out my calendar for special occasions in the fusion was great. Well I’m gonna go now and watch the rest of your video but this is a really good video. Thank you.

    This was very helpful - I got the Frixion Markers recently and was glad to see they will work in my RocketBook! This might be because I'm in the UK or because it's three years since this video - the "colorsticks" I got were Frixion ballpoints and are also theoretically refillable (again, if refills are available). They look exactly like the "colorsticks" shown here

    I can't wait to try the rocketbook notebooks out in my clinical practice to efficiently store brief patient paper charting digitally, which is much more secure when utilized with HIPAA compliant cloud/server storage, instead of sitting in a locked drawer. I'll never be needing a shredder again with this either! The additional meticulous organization and verbal-cognitive structuring, along with rigid, yet flexibly refined visual sensory metamorphosis which this video has impressed upon me is certainly no less exact than a series of dotted eighth-sixteenth notes in attenuating accelerando 12/8 time, scurrying along horizontally, on top of, yet simultaneously inside of the pages of a recycled and good-smelling Dvörak manuscript for $4.99, and not one cent more on eBay! Thank you so much.

    Thank you so much for doing this video. 😆 I was on the fence about getting a Rocketbook and I was afraid the frixion pens would be scratchy on the pages and hard to read. I thought that the markers would provide for smoother writing. The markers aren't locally available, but every local store has frixion ballpoint pens. But I can tell from your video that the pens write just fine on the paper and show up really good in the app. So now I'm going to go to order an Everlast and a Fusion 😊

    I have an important pen-related question that I cannot found answered anywhere : How long does a pen last with the everlast ? More or less of course. Given that a strong argument in favor of rocketbooks is ecological, I wouldn't want to switch from throwing tons of papers to throwing tons of plastic pens.

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's a good question. I haven't been able to find the volume of the pens ink anywhere, but based on my experience, I get a few months out of a pen, using it primarily for agendas and little notes. I have seen some people say they run out a little faster than some other pens, but if so, it is likely not by much... And you can do what I do, and buy the replacement cartridges rather than throw out the whole pen - especially since the pen itself shouldn't really run out, since you won't be using the eraser much.
      I hope this helped 👍

    On the rocketbook wave, the marker residue resists the ink from the pens once "erased", since the ink stays on the page. It's quite a major problem w mine, so i'm considering the wet erase ones next

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, that's one of the main benefits of the synthetic Rocketbooks - wet-erasing make the page fresh again. It won't last forever, but I would could on a year at least, depending on your use and how good you are at caring for it 👍

    Unfortunately, I experienced the highlighters to be pretty bad. As you said, it is very easy to smudge with them.
    Another problem I have is that they take forever to dry. Green is ok but yellow and especially pink still weren't completely dry after 4 hours.
    I don't use a Rocketbook though. I use a Newyes book but they shouldn't differ much from each other. The material of the pages should be quite the same. Normal pens dry pretty fast on the Newyes so I don't see why the highlighters dry so extremely slow.

    Personally I used the pastel highlighters on my Rocketbook Panda Planner and they came out very nicely once I scanned the pages. All of the colors came out well, even the pink. Have you used the thinkboard yet? If so:
    Can you use frixion markers on the thinkboard? How does using the thinkboard differ from using a whiteboard (besides all the places you can stick it and the ability to save it to the cloud)?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a thinkboard v2, but haven't had the chance to try it out yet. My understanding is you should be using dry erase markers with it, not FriXion markers. The main benefits would be the Rocketbook App comparability and the adhesive back that allows you to stick it wherever you need it. Though, if you already have a whiteboard, you can get the same App integration using Rocketbook Beacons.
      Thanks for watching and good luck 👍✌️

    Thank you, Jake, a great video. As always, I use the friction pins and fine liners for drawing in my rocketbook and coloring, however, I have found that even the next day the ink still smudges and is slightly wet, how can I prevent that?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm… that’s unusual. To prevent smudging, the best thing you can do is try not to overlap pen strokes or allow too much ink to pool in one place. I suspect if you’re using them to colour, it may be challenging to prevent this though. Otherwise, you may consider using a small desk fan to blow air over the page while you write to expedite the drying process. Good luck 🤞

    Thanks for this great video series. One thing I find most useful about bullet journaling are the index pages...I imagine replicating this has to do with how you set up and track your scans on the back end. (I don't have a Rocket Book yet) How have you addressed indexing/tracking your notes and files?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lisa, I'm glad you like my video series. I don't make a formal index page in my bullet journal because I can't really keep it updated over the months as I go through my work days because you don't want to leave ink on the Rocketbook pages that long. So, all I do is place all my bullet journal pages into one Google drive folder with the title '2020 - Week ##' so that each week's scans are chronological. Then I can use the search options from Rocketbook's OCR to perform a text search if I really need to look something up in more detail. Again, thanks for watching! ✌️👍

    Did you make any longevity tests between the different pens? Do click pens dry out faster than capped pens in the drawer? Do fineliners write fewer pages than a 0.5mm ballpoint?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't look at that kind of stuff. What I'll say though is that the ball points all seem to have the same volume of liquid, so I would expect finer tips to last a little longer. I don't know it's worth comparing the fineliner to the ball points because they are markers, so I wouldn't want to substitute one for a pen in the same circumstance. As far as drawer longevity goes, I haven't tested that either, but I have ball points that have been capped for a year and they still work.

      No, if you use a normal pen you will not be able to erase the ink. Even some erasable pens will stain the pages. That is why they only recommend using FriXion pens. You may be able to try some water soluble thermosensitive erasable inks, but I would be very careful. Every single pen has been subpar except the fine liner. Is there a way I can avoid the regular Frixion pens from skipping? This happens on the initial part of writing, and also at the top of the page. Idk 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m getting frustrated since I bought so many - all 0.7. I like the thicker line look however, it skips & it’s inconsistent. I have to be doing something wrong here.

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you writing over an area where you had used the eraser before? Using the FriXion eraser deposits a thin film on the page which can cause the pen ink to skip. Otherwise, that seems like an unusual issue. Perhaps try writing a little on a regular page to clean the tip of the pen. Something may have become caught in the ball tip.

    Quick question, I'm new to the Rocketbook and frixion pens.
    I've been surprised at how quickly the ink runs out. I've gone through 2 clickable 0.7 pens in less than 2 months. Not slow to write but ink almost out in the cartridge.
    Have you found any of the frixion pens where the ink lasts longer than others? Maybe stick vs clickable or different point sizes? Thanks for any tips on the pens where the ink lasts longest. Or do they just run out quicker than regular pens?

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reloadable click and stick pens have the same amount of ink because they use the same cartridges - So your best bet may be trying a smaller tip, like moving to the 0.5mm instead of the 0.7mm one if you aren't already. They will dispense the ink slower and should last a little longer. Having said that, I think this is a common complaint with the FriXion pens in general... My solution is to always keep a few refill cartridges on hand. It's cheaper to refill than to buy new pens. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    • @JakeReevesVideo
      @JakeReevesVideo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tomislav, that's a trade-off for sure. Unfortunately there isn't a quick-fix. I really don't like the look of the colour-option because the dots/lines come through inconsistently. Because of this, I don't use a lot of colour pens and try to stick to black ink in most of my notes. The colour option works better in the Matrix because it's pattern always shows up - but then the transcription files get a lot of errors

    Would you recommend this as a drawing book?

      Though call. It comes down to how much you like gel-like pens, if you would smudge things and the quality of the scanned output. I use it for technical drawings, but not artistic ones. The contrast enhancement would likely make the drawing look different than in person - particularly colours. And smudging will always be a factor if you aren't willing to wait. For sketching, I prefer classic pencil and paper. I hope this helps 👍

    the friction colors works on rocketbook everlast?

      FriXion color markers and pens should work on Everlast, as I demonstrate in this video. But look at the writing samples I show because not all colours show up the same after scanning.

    In 10 years LGR's gonna do an Oddware video about this LOL There's something 1990's and counter-intuitive about this idea: digital/analog hybrid, adding intermediate steps to a simple task that are app-dependent, and proprietary materials that are useless for anything else. Definitely not for me.
