- Not only has Aston Martin leapfrogged Mercedes (and many other F1 teams) over the off-season, but as Lewis Hamilton pointed out, 2023's standout performer has done it using several Mercedes parts, and even the former champion team's windtunnel! The AMR23 is basically a love child of the Mercedes and the Red Bull. It has the body of a Red Bull with the Merc engine.
It's concept is actually more Ferrari-esque

The other half is Fernando. Give Alo a half decent car and he makes it pretty decent just like the 2012 Ferrari. They also have a driver that can extract the max potential of a car.
To be fair hamilton and russel are both considered to be some of the best drivers in the field too. I like alonso think he's a strong driver, but I don't think he'd squeeze much more pace outta the merc

I think the Brazilian gp last year tricked Mercedes into thinking they were onto a winner with the zero sidepod concept. without that race they probably admit over the off-season that it was a bad concept

The zeropod design was flawed when it debuted, it's a concept from 2021 in a car from 2023
they gotta have learnt that the zero sidepod design didnt do them justice in 2022 and in bahrain this year, merc needs to let go of that concept
What most don't see is that the sidepods work as an inverted wing. Mercedes no sidepod no extra downforce.
Zero pod concept might work when you rely on wings to generate downforce instead of floors

The Aston Martin may use certain parts from Mercedes but the body work on their car is absolute stunning aerodynamically. I've looked at the comparisons and it's easy to see the downforce differences that definitely helped at Bahrain and will keep them ahead of Mercedes unless Merc makes some major changes soon.

Depend on how much they spend on current W14. Last year Aston Martin basically develop 2 car design at the start of the season but with pretty little upgrade later on the season

And those engineers and designers worked for other outfits before Mercedes & RB. That's how it works, you scout and hire talented people. Applies everywhere.
The Aston Martin is faster because the floor is better than on the Mercedes. While Mercedes is still trying to deal with tire wake, AM already solved that problem last year and can focus on getting more out of the floor.
Finally someone realises the things you can't see are where the main gains can be found
@@Luke-en2tk While we can't see what they're doing with the floor fences and sculpting around the tunnels. You can look at the regulations and see the insane design freedom you have there, and put 2 and 2 together and get 4.1.
You can angle the fences up to 50 degrees in the y direction and up to 25 degrees in the z direction, and you can add 50mm fillet radius. Spacing is pretty unrestricted, as is stagger, camber and cant. In a heavily restricted formula, the places with the most potential are the places with the fewest restrictions. The places with the fewest restrictions are also the places hidden from general view.
Even when you have crystal clear shots of the fences, because the average pundit or photographer, or forum troll doesn't understand how they function, they simply gloss over them.
Look at F1technical, all the car posts which they claim are about technical details on cars, just talk about Mercedes as a team. Anyone that tries to even discuss something novel pertaining to the regulations or aerodynamics gets banned because it makes Mercedes or the low tier software operators, masquerading aerodynamicists moderating the site look bad.

The problem is, is that almost all good people that made Mercedes a champion, left the team in one way or an other. Many moved to other teams and AM got some good people from Mercedes, but also Redbull. Mercedes sits with the left overs and has no good driver that can help to improve the car. Schumacher helped to build the platform, but without a driver like that and the right people that Design the car, it doesn't matter if AM uses their parts and their windtunnel. Even without it, they will deliver a better car. AM is in fact hold back by some parts, instead of helped with it.
100%, enough credit isn’t given to the work Schumi did with Brawn and the team to develop the car for the new regs. Toto just swooped in, pushed Brawn out and gets all the credit.
Oh please, outside of him saying how the car feels, due to testing restrictions no one driver these days is able to do anywhere as much in-season development as schu at Ferrari, it is all on the engineers now
This isn't fair to Lewis, Lewis as undeniably had a hand in the development and design of the cars he's driven with Mercedes. Whether or not they listen to him is up to Mercedes. Your suggesting that Lewis just shows up and gives no input, ideas, or opinions on the car is just not accurate. If you don't like the man that's fine but don't distort reality to fit your bias. "No good driver" is unreasonably harsh.
Ted Kravitz made the same point on Sky: it means Merc can’t blame the engine, E10, or anything “shared” with another team, which was something that was suggested in 2022.

Considering that Aston Martin hired the former Red Bull's chief engineer for aerodynamics last year, we can say their cars are Mercedes/Red Bull Hybrids.

Difficult one to call, but if the AM/RB concepts are showing this pace of development and the Mercedes concept isn't keeping pace then it does point to the Mercedes concept as being flawed.

It’s very simple and confirmed by checo in the post race conference, they’ve built a Redbull using merc parts.
It’s really concerning that Aston as a customer team went from 7th in constructors to having the 2nd fastest car. While Mercedes, the engine supplier, went from having the second fastest car at the end of 2022 to being 4th now.

Everyone is so caught up on this new term “coping”. In all of F1 history you make the move that works best and with the regulations and the importance of the floor and Venturi tunnels it is becoming clear to all the teams that there is one clear and obvious design choice. Incase everyone forgot F1 cars had the engine in the front until one team (I believe it was cooper) put it in the back and no one could beat them until they did the same thing. Same for monocoque, carbon fibre, front and rear wings, flappy paddle gear boxes. It’s the nature of the beast.
