That sounds like a format variation of Commander. WOTC will most likely capitalize on that idea beyond 2026. Their main market would most likely be new players who are fans of these other properties. On the one hand, I have no problems about this so we can grow the fan base, but my concern for the longest time is the inflation of prices with the issue of card quality (I.e. warped cards in PREMIUM SET?)

Many ppl can be sad or mad about what's going on and are doing but its whatever, Ill be happy with a product or two here and there and ignore the bulk I dont care about and not dwell on it. Its incredible that MTG has been around for 30 years and more coming, that is something to be happy about whether or not we dont like alot that they poop out. The signal to noise ratio with Magic is just ridiculous. I've been playing since 1994 and I gave up on the game a few years ago because I just didn't care to continue trying to keep up with it. It just isn't worth it for, at most, a weekly commander game or three.
As you mentioned, engage with what you like is BS, because you can't just have blind spots as to the card pool available and if I can't even know the cards I don't want to play. Meanwhile my video game backlog is getting some much needed attention and, gasp, I've been able to read more books.

He told me they had the story written all the way to the defeat of Bolas, and the plan was to begin incorporating outside IPs after that. This was Magic's fate from the beginning. I've totally avoided LOTR and the Commander Masters sets this summer. They've got to get back to their roots. Hopefully Wilds of Eldraine and Caverns of Ixalan will help. Like you said, though, it's all about the quality of the cards. I think they also misstepped with the 3 year rotation experiment. No one wants to see Sheoldred and a bunch of sweeper control decks for another year.

Good points, I bought a few flesh and blood decks and displays instead of magic this year.
I LOVE magic and I have to say that the amount of product is absolutely sick and no one can keep up with it, except the players who don't have to worry about money.
I started with proxies the last year and I have to say that was a game changer for me. I started with Just proxiing what I have but that changed this year, because it is way too much and not affordable any more. So we (my playgroup) play very strong decks for nearly no money (in comparison). That's our way to solve the problem and we are not supporting wizards any more. We are sick to pump such crazy amount of money into cardboard. And they milk the community like crazy, we have to change that

Richard from the MTG podcast made a good point regarding the universes beyond thing; If the focus of MTG becomes adopting other IPs to attract players at the expense of other aspects of the game, then it runs the risk of having the only thing that makes Magic attractive something that can be easily duplicated and undercut by any other TCG. He made the example of Lorecanna, if tomorrow Disney decides they want to start incorporating other IPs into their TCG they will easily cannibalize all magic potential universes beyond options. Disney has way more connections, influence and money thus would easily be able to leverage their status to attract everyone to make crossover products with them instead of Hasbro.

I wasted many hours, dollars, and energy with the hopes of winning at least one or two games a night with nothing. Mark, you are a very astute and intelligent person and your comments are a realistic reflection of what me and the other close MTG players I know feel. We have families, and other financial obligations that occupy our time and money and we are increasing the gap between our time and playing MTG. If WOTC reduced production output, then the MTG lifestyle would be rewarding and more appealing. Cards that held a high value based on market price, have dropped in value as well, so where is the appeal now?

Even though they know DAMN WELL that's every product with the way they print staples and powerhouses. You don't have to participate in every product...meanwhile every product *haymaker* *haymaker* *haymaker* Like ya ok guy, every color keeps getting commander and modern bombs I need to keep up with, skip my ass!

Can I ask what harm does this actually do to MtG as a whole?
You mentioned that you were interested in some of the actual MtG sets that were announced. Harping on the Universes Beyond stuff just kinda feels super entitled. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot of product coming this next year but it doesn’t mean there aren’t actual magic sets being released. This isn’t the year of solely “universe beyond, reprint re/masters sets”.
WotC is just broadening their reach which, to me atleast, seems good for their IP as a whole. More players, more eyes, more intrigue. Thing is that I feel people who share a similar sentiment as you are tackling this from a “Magic should just be Magic” but lets face it.
With the massive success that was LotR and the publicity it had generated. WotC would be shooting themselves in the foot if they choose not to mimic that sort of success. I for one do not really care for these cross overs because at no point did I ever feel “this is pandering” or “this doesn’t feel like magic”. Maybe it is just me but I genuinely do not understand the criticism.

I like continuity and immersion, block constructed games ensured everything in a game let me immerse myself in the fantasy of the game. While standard and modern are fine formats and I did play them, they weren’t formats that would keep me in the hobby. I’ve lingered on since block constructed died as a draft player….but they killed draft too. It makes no sense to play other pods with your draft deck….it kills half the strategy of picking. Modern: The Ultimate Horizons, damn now that sounds way like Star Trek's slogan of Space, the final frontier. It feels like you said, also a reason I quit playing on Arena. I don't want to spend hours to grind games for wildcards or buy digital packs there to constantly upgrade my decks. There were times I had a win rate of about 55-60% with several decks, two releases further it went down to 30%. Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous if you don't have the latest cards you keep losing. No fun there.

The big issue is that it feels like Commander has been broken with the massive glut of cards that have hit the market. Their are just wonky game mechanics enabled that completely deconstruct the typical running and tempo of Commander games. I don't mean fast mana infinite either. Casual deck play is getting broken by random cards that are enabled by the power creep seemingly gross design violation of the cards themselves.

Very well summed up the matter. I've already sold my collection and now even probably going to piece out /sell my remaining decks. I was already mostly done by the point of TWD issues, but it's just kept getting worse to the point that the game I fell in love with is no longer itself and the company doesn't give a shit. Flesh and blood is pretty fun, I'll see y'all there.

  • @ullrich

I saw a bunch of LotR people that were really into the MTG release, including some of the biggest LotR TH-camrs. Of course that's anecdotal, but is there any data to support the idea that Tales of Middle Earth wasn't successful at bringing in new players from the LotR fandom? I think there is a big difference between putting LotR IP on a game platform like MTG and putting it on a Hot Pocket. There's a ton of art and flavor involved, the gameplay works really well to help bring the story to an interactive tabletop format, and the collectible nature is spot on.
Not sure how much of the announcements you watched, but the Murder at Karlov Manor is set in Ravnica and will have a sort of Clue/murder mystery vibe, which is at least something new. And I don't think Duskmourn is going to be anything like Phyrexia - it's a 1970s/80s horror theme set in a signle giant haunted mansion. Not saying that wont' be cool, just that it's not going to be Phyrexia.
I think BloomBurrow looks awesome. I don't know why, definitely not anything to do with furries? I just love the idea - reminds me of Redwall and some of those fantasy books I used to read as a kid. I like the idea of expanding support for animal tribe decks, like squirrels, rats, etc. Not going to have anything to do with Duskmourn, though I don't think.
Lastly, you're totally on point about the "only engage with the products you like" concept with a TCG. That's a really good point - the product we want to engage with is MTG, don't tell us we should pick and choose which parts. It's all connected, and it's supposed to be collectible.

I just got back into the game, thanks to my brother and some friends that like Commander, and I feel like this is the worst possible time to do that. Everything is ridiculously expensive in comparison to when I last paid attention to prices. A pack was like 4 bucks? And there was only one kind of them as well.
As for crossovers, I actually liked the LotR Set (as a fan of both) and I feel like it fits well enough. As for some of the ones I heard about, and the upcoming Fallout one: I agree with your opinion there.
I can just hope the deluge of cards and packs eventually results in prices dropping... Or else I might fall off the bandwagon as fast as I climbed on it again.
