You're right. Jane Austin's writing did not portray such characters. But Since it was an unfinished novel, they are creating/adding to the story and the characters.
Sanditon is a great series. One of the best I have seen. Richly made, excellent cast, director, costumes, everything. I often watch episodes before bedtime, especially when the day has been rough, cannot get enough of Sydney and Charlotte. I do hope we shall be given a second and third and fourth season.
Why so many people hate Sidney is beyond me... he's a man broken by life (kinda like Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre) and he's encountered with the naive young girl (which I don't blame her for and make no mistake I absolutely love her), thus he gets a bit irritated (rightfully so from his perspective), but inside he's a very good man IMO. He loves his family dearly and brings the ultimate sacrifice for them at the end of S1... though it's really unfair towards Charlotte. In the end I have to say the character that really vexes me the most is Tom, his brother. I mean that man is reckless, irresponsible and ultimately, it's his fault the main couple coudn't be together. And he always gets away with his mistakes so easily. Urgh. His wife is golden AND the character I pity the most...
Tom is a goodhearted villain, a bit weak and selfish. Like Knightley said in Emma about Frank Churchill :" I do envy him, Emma." Austen has these same basic characters in different novels.

He lets it out in a yell of frustration and then carries on explaining why he's angry and tries to be reasonable as far as his emotional state allows...unless he goes away to cool off... both are quite reasonable reactions to anger and given the fact that he lives in a society whit no psychologist to tell him how to handle anger issues he's doing exceptionally well... But hey, we are all different, preferring things. Some people want their spouse to be calm and never angry. I prefer people who I saw angry at least once because then I know what to expect... with those I've never seen angry, one can never know and there's close to no chance that a person can go through life without getting angry at all.
Yes. Exactly my thoughts. Sidney was never to blame. He intended to marry Charlotte. And he made it clear he would rather be with her when Eliza left for London and he stayed. What Tom did from lying to his workers, to his wife and then conveniently just takes whatever his siblings offered. I’m torn at the scene where he was in the church and his wife was consoling him. A man just died and his brother is to marry a woman he does not love. Ugh. I hope they address the hurt he’s caused to Charlotte and Sidney in the next seasons.
It's a or rather THE last and unfinished story that Jane Austen wrote. Sorry to say there is no more. A fact that has always made me sad for I would've loved to know the conclusion to this story. Damnit Jane why did you die so young.

Loved every second of the show, but the ending ruined it 🙈 I don't think Sidney was evil or bad, just a man of his time trying to save his brother by sacrificing him self (and hurt Charlotte too). But this is not a Jane Austen ending, and the writers did a terrible job with the ending...think I need to watch my P&P 1995 to set my world straight again 🙈

Though Jane Eyre was more mature, more decided. The characters remind me so much of the characters from Me Before You. She also reminds me of Daenerys from Game of Thrones.
Elizabeth would make him regret talking with her wittiness and smart come backs. This girl is okay but she CAN’T play Elizabeth. I guess also Theo can’t play Darcy. Darcy was in fact rude and full of pride but he was also very shy and not fond of talking which i can’t imagine Theo doing very well. Still my own opinion tho idk
Yeah, Darcy was rude, but it was more blunt rude. He had no filter. This guy is a jerk. He's an actual asshole with venom behind his words. With mr Darcy there's like an innocence of not meaning malice with his words. In the way a child is just honest, but they don't intend harm. They just say it like it is. They just say what they feel and think out loud without taking people's feelings into consideration. This guy knows what he is saying and the affect he wants it to have.
I watched Season 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it, and was so disappointed 😔 when I read that there might not be a Season 2. How sad a specially how Season 1 ended. Won’t there be a happy ending for Charlotte and Sidney? Please and yes I am a fan of Jane Austen and similar authors. 😥

He lost hope in life once that biotch of an ex ditched him for someone richer and older. Which causes him to be suspicious of women and love etc and criticises Charlotte harshly for jumping to conclusions and forming hasty opinions about his famjly whom he loves. Charlotte helped him see that not everyone is a superficial boot-licker like that, with her blunt nature. And she sees under that tough act, he's a man of honor and good values. He repays the debts of Otis who he could've chosen to punish severely for trying to buy time using his ward's name and causing her to get kidnapped. He also greatly helps his family(even moreso because of Charlotte) even sacrificing his own happiness for his reckless brother's mistakes.
Jane Austen would spin in her grave to know that this was a terrible ending. And to kill off the romantic interest too. She liked a happy endings. This was not.
In a way I respect Sydney’s decision in the end (even though it was heartbreaking) he gave up his own happiness in order to help his family. This is my favourite show and I need a season 2.🥰

I was all excited to watch it. Then, I read spoilers....Now, I want to watch it but THE HEARTBREAK! I don't know if I can take another heartache like Outlander Season 2. At the very least, there is always fanfiction.
We just finished Season 1 and Episodes up to 8. My husband and I enjoyed it all. It's my first time to hear about Jane Austin's unfinished novel. I am fond of her books and to me this story is unique. I think this is the best period drama so far at least for me. It's because of the story, the actors, beautiful settings, beautiful costumes...The actress Charlotte is very interesting and I love the story which was started from the beginning of the season with Sidney, is exciting that you can't help to want to follow the story arc. The ending in Season 1 was not great. I think it's not what would Jane Austin wanted to happen in her book... but I just wish to see a beautiful and happy ending for Charlotte and Sidney or at least for the heroine. To me Theo James is the best actor for this role. At this point I couldn't think of the best love for Charlotte. I think for Charlotte, that is the best ending of the story and seeing her what she becomes and growth. Hopefully in Season 3, we’ll see. It is a definitely a keeper for me.
Hell no to this couple! Just finished the season and Charlotte deserves wayyy better. Mr. Springer was a good person and they should of ended up together. I like these Sidney and Charlotte videos until I saw the ending of the show

@nnkkla90 It doesn't matter what century one is from or reading about, this woman falling for a man who's disrespectful to her is the exact cycles that leads to abusive relationships. How we treat others and are treated makes all the difference.
Somehow I have sympathy for Sidney. He had to sacrifice his own love for his own family, but he never failed letting the girl he loves the reason why he made that choice - a very difficult choice. Although it's painful for Charlotte, she understood because she's got a kind heart and she loves the Parker family as well as Sanditon . She wants Tom’s vision to come true. She’s been part of that encouragement from the very beginning of Season 1. She cares for Sidney and his family. She learned to let go. For Theo, no hard feelings when he decided at that time to leave Sanditon for another project, but that actually gives opportunity for more creative and beautiful storytelling with the new characters and we see that in Charlotte's new adventure. I find this exciting! There is a part of me though hoping that Sidney will come back, but I love the other characters in the story too. Overall, adapting Jane Austin’s style of writing, the arc has to come to a full stop picking up bits from the beginning until the end, and love conquers all which is central to the main story. By the way one of my many favourite scenes in Season 1 was when Sidney together with Charlotte rescued Ms Lambe and chasing carriages :)

I suggest you to watch the TV show so you'll be able to see and understand who Mr. Parker is and how/why he might seem this way. It's a very intriguing and romantic story....and I won't add anything more. I loved it and cannot wait for a season 2. This is just a clip don't be confused :-)
He's like this throughout the whole show. He's only nicer towards the end. There's a second male love interest that's a lot warmer, but also just nice and respectful overall.

I watched Season 1 and thoroughly enjoyed it, and was so disappointed 😔 when I read that there might not be a Season 2. How sad a specially how Season 1 ended. Won’t there be a happy ending for Charlotte and Sidney? Please and yes I am a fan of Jane Austen and similar authors. 😥

Yes, there is none of Austen's social satire and ironic humour here. This is a televised romance novel.
They clearly said he had a good heart and his change in personality was due to a failed relationship. Tom talks to Charlotte about how he was a completely different man before that. He lost hope in life once that biotch of an ex ditched him for someone richer and older. Which causes him to be suspicious of women and love etc and criticises Charlotte harshly for jumping to conclusions and forming hasty opinions about his famjly whom he loves. Charlotte helped him see that not everyone is a superficial boot-licker like that, with her blunt nature. And she sees under that tough act, he's a man of honor and good values. He repays the debts of Otis who he could've chosen to punish severely for trying to buy time using his ward's name and causing her to get kidnapped. He also greatly helps his family(even moreso because of Charlotte) even sacrificing his own happiness for his reckless brother's mistakes.

In a way I respect Sydney’s decision in the end (even though it was heartbreaking) he gave up his own happiness in order to help his family.

We just finished Season 1 and Episodes up to 8. My husband and I enjoyed it all. It's my first time to hear about Jane Austin's unfinished novel. I am fond of her books and to me this story is unique. I think this is the best period drama so far at least for me. It's because of the story, the actors, beautiful settings, beautiful costumes...The actress Charlotte is very interesting and I love the story which was started from the beginning of the season with Sidney, is exciting that you can't help to want to follow the story arc. The ending in Season 1 was not great. I think it's not what would Jane Austin wanted to happen in her book... but I just wish to see a beautiful and happy ending for Charlotte and Sidney or at least for the heroine. To me Theo James is the best actor for this role. At this point I couldn't think of the best love for Charlotte. I think for Charlotte, that is the best ending of the story and seeing her what she becomes and growth. Hopefully in Season 3, we’ll see. It is a definitely a keeper for me.
Hell no to this couple! Just finished the season and Charlotte deserves wayyy better. Mr. Springer was a good person and they should of ended up together. I like these Sidney and Charlotte videos until I saw the ending of the show

Sidney is a big boy and he prove many times that he can say no to his brother's caprice. But married a woman who already left him before for a richer man?Like really? They warn Charlotte before, "Sidney is instable", "don't trust him"... Even her father tell her don't trust people... Sidney was messing with Charlotte mind, playing hot and cold with her, even if he had feelings and still, and i really hope, if there is a season 2, that she will grow from it, and make him regret that silly decision.
He didn't marry her because he loved her. He did that to save his brother's project as he said he was obliged to. But yes hopefully there will be a second season

Somehow I have sympathy for Sidney. He had to sacrifice his own love for his own family, but he never failed letting the girl he loves the reason why he made that choice - a very difficult choice. Although it's painful for Charlotte, she understood because she's got a kind heart and she loves the Parker family as well as Sanditon . She wants Tom’s vision to come true. She’s been part of that encouragement from the very beginning of Season 1. She cares for Sidney and his family. She learned to let go.
For Theo, no hard feelings when he decided at that time to leave Sanditon for another project, but that actually gives opportunity for more creative and beautiful storytelling with the new characters and we see that in Charlotte's new adventure. I find this exciting! There is a part of me though hoping that Sidney will come back, but I love the other characters in the story too. Overall, adapting Jane Austin’s style of writing, the arc has to come to a full stop picking up bits from the beginning until the end, and love conquers all which is central to the main story.
By the way one of my many favourite scenes in Season 1 was when Sidney together with Charlotte rescued Ms Lambe and chasing carriages :)

I suggest you to watch the TV show so you'll be able to see and understand who Mr. Parker is and how/why he might seem this way. It's a very intriguing and romantic story....and I won't add anything more. I loved it and cannot wait for a season 2. This is just a clip don't be confused :-)

He's like this throughout the whole show. He's only nicer towards the end. There's a second male love interest that's a lot warmer, but also just nice and respectful overall.
