The music was written in1922-1923 by Paul Whiteman and Ferde Grofé, the lyrics by Theodora Morse
(also known as Dorothy Terris) Translated into German it was entitled
"Im Rausch einer Nacht, according to my WWII German War Bride's
recollection. She remembers, as a young girl, listening to this song on
the radio.

Interesting story to this song. The music was written by the great, but ill-fated, silent film director Marshall "Mickey" Neilan. Paul Whiteman happened to hear him play it at a party and asked Neilan for permission to add it to his repertoire and record it. With lyrics added, it became an even greater hit. In flush times, Neilan signed away the rights, the royalties which might have helped him later when he was reduced to penury.
