When i started i took a single aspect of my rl personality blew it up. Halforc who focused his rage into a passion for justice. Over the next 21 years and many games I have run the gambit. So some food for thought for new players that are stumped think about something about yourself expand it. It makes it a bit easier to flow in to that persona. Good luck everyone.
David Nicholson I really agree. I just finished my first year of theatre arts as a freshman in high school. I don't have stage fright, but for some reason, I always get the symptoms of it when I'm talking in front of lots of others. Wobbly speech, voice cracking, even shaking legs which can get really annoying when you want to NOT fall over in the middle of a performance. So I often play vulnerable or awkward characters. Panicked criminals about to be caught, shocked girl seeing her childhood sweetheart for the first time since being a kid. My natural physical ticks often end up aiding my performance.
Also you can focus on a part of you that is small (basically playing with opposites) if you feel very weak play a strong warrior, if you are very anxious or worried play a brave wizard or fighter, if you are calm most of the time, play a bloodthirsty barbarian
my character is a deep one, hes basically a mix of robbie rotten in a sense that his always thinking of schemes that go horribly wrong and an elven king in a sense that he decorates himself with jewlery and lavish clothing, he is a megalo maniacal quirky fish man super villan esentially,except hes normally on the "good" side
My character is similar... sort of. My character also wears really fancy, almost royal clothing, but it doesnt really hit him, as he's just some average healer. I based his backstory and personality off of Steven Universe
I've currently got a small concept going for my first character :) it is subject to change. Vamora Raldov is an Elf, she is a young, bubbly Elf who is very enthusiastic about creating potions and alchemy, however she has little to no magic so her potions often end up... Exploding. In her youth she travelled a lot which explains her strange accent, she was raised in a military family so her father taught her how to duel wield. Unfortunately, due to her passion for potions and alchemy, as well as her cowardly nature, she didn't further her fighting skills much to her father's annoyance. Not too long ago her parents were deemed KIA, in her grief Vamora continued to travel and used her thirst for knowledge to distract her until she found a place to call home, named The Vale. At some point in her travels she ended up becoming cursed, (or so she thinks) when travelling her grief became too much so she was able to find a magic user who, upon her request, made her forget who her parents were (save a few details which is the information that you know) and created a pendant for her to prevent the effects of "the curse". Outsiders who have seen the effect of her curse say she almost completely changes. Her personality, voice, mannerisms, and even her race change, she also becomes very useful in battle. The only parts of her that stay the same are her eyes, her ears, and her ability to know friend from foe, although she forgets who they are. When cursed she stays up all night which explains why a very tired elven Vamora leaves her tent in the morning. If she loses the pendant during the day, she can find it before nightfall, if she does find it then she will not be subjected to the curse. So basically Strength - good at making explosive although they are accidental, she is also fiercely protective of her friends, when cursed she is good in battle. Weakness - cowardly, bad at making potions, kinda forgetful, too cute to function. Interests - potions, alchemy, plants, making friends, likes all creatures but especially ugly creatures. (because they don't get enough love) Character inspo - Moka Akashiya from Rosario Vampire, Radagast the brown from The Hobbit, Neville Longbottom/Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter, and possibly Ned from Pushing Daisies.

I think it is always cool to build around a centerpiece. That is really nice if you have chaotic or no ideas. So building around a very specific part of character or history, or even a piece of clothing.
I don't LARP but my most loved and complex character is literally myself, a few years older, in a DND setting. My other is a class/race combo I wanted to try, so I did.
My first and favorite character to play is John Haelig Le'Snoc, a scavenger/looter with a heart of gold hidden beneath greedy ambitions. My whole outfit is a combination of Samurai, gothic German, French, and Viking armors, gambesons, and mails stitched and bolted together to make a cobbled together sort of look. Basically, John is one of the guys that waits until a battle is finished, and loots the bodies strewn about the battlefield. Hell, even the name I gave him is made up of stolen Viking and French names.

My main is a barbarian and he was just born and bred barbar with motivation to be great. His weird stuff has happened in game that makes him special and instead of a tragic back story his IG story is sad. He has hung up his shield and axe as he slowly lost grip on his sanity due to one tragedy after another and started delving into being a witch doctor as a result.

So, I'm pinning down my character as a Norrhat(Vampire)/human or one of two races that I kinda created on my own but doubt people would want to do. All this did come from a novel I'm writing
this is really helpful! i’m planning to create a mute and cautious elf (since that’s as close as my personality as i can get without being me 100%), so having these tips can be necessary to make a good first character!

I personally like outcast, and very quiet secretive characters so these examples of ways to develope a character are great! I always find that listening to Power Metal a really good way to find concepts for characters. I suggest artists like Gloryhammer, Powerwolf, Turisas, and definitely Alestorm (for the pirates). There are sooooo many artists like that all with good music and concepts/backstories for character creation!
Music is great for inspiration! And even when it doesn't inspire a character, I make playlists for all my existing characters to help me get in the zone haha
I decided to do a plague doctor. Instead of being a hero, i'm just a doctor, with my tent acting as a plague house/doctor's office. Best part is, I have a latex doctor cane with the hourglass and wings for the handle as my weapon.
I thought up this druid girl who serves a lady who saved her life. She’s basically an extremely well treated slave. She wears cuffs but they aren’t attached to anything and she’s gifted things as a way to show off her lady’s wealth and kindness. She’s free to do what she wishes most times but still needs to serve her lady when she’s called.
My character, Luna (a moon fairy/ guardian) was inspired by: Agent May (Agents of SHIELD) Alita (Alita: Battle Angel) Hermione (Harry Potter) Belle (Beauty and the Beast)

My main character lost her family to a fire when she was five and was then raised by a lich. This caused her to become emotionally reserved and more of the bookworm type. If it is written then she can understand it but human emotion gives her trouble. She also died once and scared the crud out of her king by yelling at him (my fave larp moment tbh)

The character I'm creating is an Elf named Tura. Her past begins when she is abandoned at birth by her parents, because they notice that one of her pupils is bigger than the other. (I actually have this; it's called anisocoria) Believing her to be a witch, they abandon her in the depths of the woods and tattoo a mark on her forehead that deems her a reject from society. A Cervitaur hunter, wrongfully exiled from civilization finds her starving and dying; and adopts her out of pity. He raises Tura to be a ruthess warrior and assassin; teaching her from a young age to detest the Elves who had wronged them. One night, a group of Elves comes across her camp. They take Tura's father as prisoner, and cut off her left hand. Tormented by the loss of her father, the only thing she had known and loved, Tura wanders the wilds, desperate to find him. She is a storyteller as well, writing tales and sharing them with anyone who is willing to lend an ear.
In first time as a DM for a d&d group i ran for with family and friends. I played a Half-Elven Paladin named Eli Terarius. Son of General Than Terarius of Kalmore. Years ago there was a war between Humans and magical beings because a horrifying creature called Mulgorwrath brainwashed all of the magical beings into attacking humans. But when all seemed lost angel came down form the heavens with weapons immeasurable power. The sword of chaos and the shield of Faith. And he used them to help the humans distort Mulgorwrath but in doing so the Angel sacrificed his celestial immortality and in the risk lost his life. Bringing tthe magical beings back to sanity. The weapons being left to Kalmore. The angel's name was Purgos in his honor when anyone turns 23 years old they are to go to the tower where Purgos' weapons are held to see if they are worthy of them and defending Kalmore if Mulgorwrath or any evil returns. And that's where Eli's story starts.

do you have tips on making up a cool name for characters- i find it hard to make a backstory but even more finding a fitting name i like, not only know mbut for a longer time. also does anyone known a youtuber , site enz. with good examples from grime making youself older- in tiny steps not big ones, do realistic beards, and making al kinds of wounds/scars especially around the eyes? i am looking for info but can't seem to find what i am looking for does somebody have any tips for me , i already checked google and pinteres- but so far i havent found exactly what i am looking for, any tips guys? thanx alot. ;)

I'm currently writing a story about my character who is a human woodsman who was orphaned at a young age and has no memory of his past, the first memory he has is waking up covered in blood with who he came to assume were his parents laying dead beside him at which point he ran into the forest and remained there until adulthood raised by the creatures of the forest mostly a likewise orphaned female wolf who lost her pack including newly born cubs to a forest fire started by a raiding party of Drow. He does not know his name but in the book I'm writing he meets Drizzt Do'Urden whom decides to name him Abban ( Drow for not-enemy) then eventually changes it to Abbil (Drow for trusted or friend). After I save his greatest friend gwenhwyvar the magical panther.
Well- I now realize I made my first LARP character an ADHD stalker kid who's also an insomniac and sometimes gets sudden bouts of paranoia. h U H PFfttt I'm sure I'll be finee- I think ... Probably
Does anyone ever do a Transgendered characater, or is this a too hot a button issue for most LARPERS? The charcter would be a warrior who just changed from male to female, no sexual issues, just a change over from their clan that has had this problem for hundreds of years....
Cameron Garcia I myself have played a character who chose to live as male for centuries, many people play characters who live as another gender for logistical reasons like that though- that is more cross-dressing than actual transgender. There are many trans players in the community. I've seen players play characters of a different gender than their own, but I'm not sure I've seen a character played who truly transitioned and deeply identified as a gender different from the one assigned them at birth- and certainly not for reasons other than necessity or practicality. I don't think it's too hot button for Larp, though I would strongly -strongly- recommend research, at least one aspect being in the form of consultation with a transgendered person in order to make sure you play respectfully if you are not trans yourself. But from what you've said it sounds like your character is more of a cross-dressed than a person who is actually a female who looks or at one point looked male, am I correct?
i being trans myself(FtM) love to make trans characters to play, because its a struggle i can understand and portray as an "unusual" thing in characters, so it is quite interesting to play around with things of possibly the opposite of me and play mtf, or even play out different backstories and reactions i never got personally. its also great to teach people as i go about the whole thing and enlighten those who want to know more :)

do you have tips on making up a cool name for characters- i find it hard to make a backstory but even more finding a fitting name i like, not only know mbut for a longer time. also does anyone known a youtuber , site enz. with good examples from grime making youself older- in tiny steps not big ones, do realistic beards, and making al kinds of wounds/scars especially around the eyes? i am looking for info but can't seem to find what i am looking for does somebody have any tips for me , i already checked google and pinteres- but so far i havent found exactly what i am looking for, any tips guys? thanx alot. ;)

I'm currently writing a story about my character who is a human woodsman who was orphaned at a young age and has no memory of his past, the first memory he has is waking up covered in blood with who he came to assume were his parents laying dead beside him at which point he ran into the forest and remained there until adulthood raised by the creatures of the forest mostly a likewise orphaned female wolf who lost her pack including newly born cubs to a forest fire started by a raiding party of Drow. He does not know his name but in the book I'm writing he meets Drizzt Do'Urden whom decides to name him Abban ( Drow for not-enemy) then eventually changes it to Abbil (Drow for trusted or friend). After I save his greatest friend gwenhwyvar the magical panther.

You certainly can, though it's important to be respectful and to not play a parody of the gender. Research is always recommended :)

Does anyone ever do a Transgendered characater, or is this a too hot a button issue for most LARPERS? The charcter would be a warrior who just changed from male to female, no sexual issues, just a change over from their clan that has had this problem for hundreds of years....
Cameron Garcia I myself have played a character who chose to live as male for centuries, many people play characters who live as another gender for logistical reasons like that though- that is more cross-dressing than actual transgender. There are many trans players in the community. I've seen players play characters of a different gender than their own, but I'm not sure I've seen a character played who truly transitioned and deeply identified as a gender different from the one assigned them at birth- and certainly not for reasons other than necessity or practicality. I don't think it's too hot button for Larp, though I would strongly -strongly- recommend research, at least one aspect being in the form of consultation with a transgendered person in order to make sure you play respectfully if you are not trans yourself. But from what you've said it sounds like your character is more of a cross-dressed than a person who is actually a female who looks or at one point looked male, am I correct?
i being trans myself(FtM) love to make trans characters to play, because its a struggle i can understand and portray as an "unusual" thing in characters, so it is quite interesting to play around with things of possibly the opposite of me and play mtf, or even play out different backstories and reactions i never got personally. its also great to teach people as i go about the whole thing and enlighten those who want to know more :)
