      I can only imagine how stressful it must be. It's bad enough driving in London anyway and then you get the two wheeled suicide squad to watch out for too. I can only imagine they don't drive and have no clue about blind spots.

    Lorry probably shouldn't be in the ASL (unless he was already in when the light went red).
    But, that's no excuse for the cyclists. (1) lights may change while you're filtering and (2) you can see the ASL is blocked.
    A similar issue arises when there are many cyclists trying to get into the ASL but they won't all fit. Half end up on the left.
    Unless you're sure you've got time and space, don't even think about it. And IMO even if there's room - it's still not worth the risk.

  • @DasArab

    Clearly an on the ball lorry driver. I doff my cap fella. The point for me is that the other cyclists cant even pick up on the fact that you have stopped where you have stopped because the lorry is turning left. Its all about observation and they had none.

    • @diliff
      @diliff 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The lorry driver did well, but so should he. With great power comes great responsibility. You can't drive a lorry the way you would cycle on a bike. That doesn't mean I'm saying the cyclists can do what they want. Of course they should still maximise their safety if possible, but if he did collide with a cyclist, I would not accept the excuse that the lorry driver 'just didn't see them'. If he has a big blind spot and a wide load, he should take a very slow and wide turn. That's just as much common sense, if not more so, than the idea that cyclists should never pass on the inside. I actually don't really see the problem with what the cyclists did. The lorry was stationary at a set of lights. If it were moving, it would have been foolish to pass it, but at the lights, it was fairly safe. If the lights suddenly changed and the lorry started to turn, it would be trivially easy for the cyclists to stop and step onto the curb.

    • @Soulrollsdeep
      @Soulrollsdeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      David Iliff You're asking the impossible on congested, narrow London roads. It's up to you to save yourself, not rely on others to ASSUME you're there. See a blind spot? Gonna cycle into it? Going to ride straight on when sat to the left on an indicating vehicle? You're fair game to be turned into Pizza. Simple as that. Use your fucking brains, people.

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hypercatjohn The road this clip is shot on could hardly be described as "narrow" it's 3 lanes at the lights, it goes to 2 lanes across the junction and Vauxhall Bridge where I turn left onto is 2 lanes for general traffic + 1 bus lane in each direction. The vast majority of major routes through town are plenty wide enough. Notable exceptions would be where the stupid traffic planners have intentionally reduced the width of the carriageway by expanding the pavements such as Cheapside to "force" cyclists and those in motor vehicles to share the same space. The genuinely narrow roads tend to be on backstreets which are already low enough use to not really warrant specific cycle infrastructure.
      I do however agree on the fact that we need to look out for ourselves and exercise some common sense on where to place ourselves however we are still trying to make the best of poor quality, inadequate or more often then not non-existent cycle infrastructure at conflict points.

    • @Soulrollsdeep
      @Soulrollsdeep 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Still shouldn't expect others to go out there way for you, that's how you end up dead. Cyclists should spend more time campaigning the government to build full off road cycle lanes and less time complaining on youtube about how hard done by they are. Just sayin'

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hypercatjohn There are plenty of campaigns and organizations (LCC for example) asking for just that but guess what? Pretty much any of them always get met with opposition from the motoring lobby as they don't want to take any space taken away from them and assume it'll automatically lead to traffic chaos! The idea that safer conditions to cycle *may* just lead to a reduction in private motor use and therefore actually ease traffic is beyond them. It's taken 5 or 6 years to get to the point where TfL are actually starting to provide plans that are remotely safe for their "Super"highways with the proposed East/West route however I'm reserving judgement until it's actually built as I've seen them make a hash with the various CS routes so far.

    On this occasion the problem is created by the driver who'd taken up most of the cyclist safe zone at the front of the junction exit. The safe zone is there so that drivers can see the cyclists and so we can get a safe head start. Also what is the point of having safe cycle super highways that are full of cars, is that not just a normal road. The road should not be painted blue at this junction so I think the main culprits are the Town Planners who design the death traps that are London's road. The cyclists that got safely to the front of the traffic are far from silly but the few in the trucks blind spot clearly have a death wish.

    At the company where I work our lorries have just been fitted with an "urban driving" kit. It consists of sensors down the left side with a warning buzzer that sounds in the cab, a wide angle camera mounted under the wing mirror with a monitor in the cab that turns on when you indicate left as well as a audible warning that shouts: "caution, vehicle turning left" again when the left indicator is on!! Obviously not infallible but a great aid for sure.

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Simon Causer You get law breakers in/on any mode of transport. Go stand at a busy junction and you'll see loads of drivers on phones or not wearing seatbelts and if you can find an open stretch of road I'll pretty much guarantee those exceeding the speed limit will outnumber those under it. Law breaking generally comes about due to poor road design, in this instance the blue cycle Superhighway and ASL entice riders into a potentially lethal position at the junction when the correct way to do things is like they have done with the new CS5 section that runs over the bridge and around Vauxhall which is to segregate the motor and bicycle movements into different areas and give each their own light phases, pretty much entirely removes the conflicts.

    • @YodaOnDMT
      @YodaOnDMT 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being a HGV driver AND a cyclist, I see more drivers disobeying LAWS than cyclists ignoring RULES.
      And when drivers do it, it's usually one of the most dangerous things you can do in the situation...
      Blatantly and inexcusably jumping red lights, sweeping across multiple lanes of traffic and literally just driving into your lane without any regard to indicating or whether you can see them let alone stop tonnes of vehicle carrying £millions of cargo strapped to the back.

    • @SkrzypczykBass

      +Ady Blake I'd have thought as a "full time all weather commuter" you *may* have noticed that the vast majority of cyclists DO obey the law and ride with the due care and attention that our roads demand. Admittedly as my commute is to/from Central London I tend to encounter an awful lot of riders (although ONLY during the commute times, they are remarkably absent outside of those times but that's another matter entirely). Yes I see the idiots (as highlighted on this channel) but much like those poor drivers who show no regard for OTHERS safety the riders who seem to lack a sense of self preservation are quite a small group.

    Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked.

    • @kirstenfarr5071
      @kirstenfarr5071 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. We have them in Edinburgh. However, the issue is cyclists make their way to the front alongside a truck waiting to turn left and the lights change before they get to the front. It's still better to stay clear of a hgv turning left.

    • @acceleratedsloth
      @acceleratedsloth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kirstenfarr5071 that is an unrealistic scenario, this can never happen if the lorry follows the law.
      If the lorry is stopped behind the line and the cyclist is just passing it, there is more than enough time for a cyclist to pass it before it starts moving. Of course, if the lorry driver starts moving on red and yellow light or is stopped inside the box for cyclists, this will fail to work

      Paco Jones Rule 178 or 182 are not law. There are exceptions where cyclists should not pass on inside of vehicles turning left.
      Highway Code Rule 72
      On the left. When approaching a junction on the left, watch out for vehicles turning in front of you, out of or into the side road. Just before you turn, check for undertaking cyclists or motorcyclists. *Do not ride on the inside of vehicles signalling or slowing down to turn left.*

    This is a terribly bad junction for conflicts, considering the CSH continues straight on and that is a left turn lane onto the bridge painting the blue up that side is just inviting trouble. Consider that the CSH are designed to encourage NEW cyclists, who may not necessarily have the roadcraft of more seasoned riders, they are possibly more likely to just blindly go up the inside thinking the "magic paint" will protect them.

      Thanks for the comments Jamie, given the recent spate of deaths I think clips like this serve to better educate riders on correct riding technique. I'm getting a bit more vocal with my criticism to riders now - especially those who jump lights. Had an amusing one last Friday when I spotted a pavement abusing RLJer as I joined CS7 :-) First time he did it just ahead of me I yelled out "Red!" and got his attention as he looked back. I think got called "Mr Policeman" by Clapham South before once again leaving him behind. By Clapham North he eventually caught up again, this time by bypassing the stacked traffic at lights by riding on the pavement and hopped back into the bus lane. I went passed again and got called a "little bitch". IMHO if your RLJ, pavement using arse can't stay ahead then it's not me who's the little bitch ;) Shame I was heading up South Lambeth Road as I'd have taken great pleasure in repeatedly scalping the little twat further down CS7!

    Firstly, given the width of the junction the amber is going to on for quite some time and to assume the driver didn't have time to stop before the first solid white line is generous at best, certainly to drive right up to the second white line says to me they ignored the first completely.
    Second, the last three cyclists to arrive (especially green shirt cunt and noddy hat/hi-vis woman) are part of the problem. Attitudes like that get you killed ffs, hang back given the motor is there before you, don't be a selfish prick and undercut into a fairly obvious blind spot on larger vehicle turning left!!
    A separate left turn lane with a solid white line is needed at points like this (which would allow safe left turns whilst red for motors) which in turn should force motorvehicles to turn wider and not encroach. That doesn't though take into account cyclists going straight on coming late to the junction but does give a little more 'safety' room because of the wider turn. At no point does that remove the responsibility of cyclists to use their eyes obey the rules of the road and not be selfish to the point of death.

      @SkrzypczykBass  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      s4ndwichMakeR No compulsory training, just some optional "Bikeability" training that teaches riders the basics and what pretty much amounts to coping techniques for our often hostile roads. Problem is that most parents (myself included) still aren't happy with having their children use main roads despite having this training and when you put the learning into practice (the courses are open to all ages) drivers get all passed off and aggressive as they think you "riding in the middle of the road" is something you do to piss them off rather than for your own safety.
      I'd much rather see a cycling element to driving lessons so those who are learning to control a few tons of metal have at least a basic grasp or how vulnerable riders are and why they ride as they do. That training could also include advice on blindspots to avoid this kind of behaviour but as with most training how you behave afterwards isn't as easy to regulate (just look at speeding.....)

  • @acceleratedsloth
    @acceleratedsloth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nobody mentioning the fact that the lorry driver is there illegally in the box dedicated to cyclists?
    I keep observing this behaviour every day. It is mainly the taxi drivers who do this that whenever they see cyclists behind them, they cross the line on red and drive into the box for cyclists and block it so that cyclists cannot use it.

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A valid point but given that we can't tell if the lorry driver ended up in the ASL/cycle box due to creeping in after the red or due to a light changed when junction was blocked, so they couldn't proceed - as they aren't treated like yellow boxes (don't enter unless you can exit) this can happen at busy places.
      Besides in the intervening decade since this was recorded this junction has now bee re-designed, providing a permanent left-turn lane for cyclists onto the segregated cycle lane on Vauxhall Bridge.

    Notice to cyclists, the sticker on the back of the truck warning about coming up on the inside when we are turning left is not there for decoration! If that lorry was any bigger then the cyclists that are just forward of the front left side would be in a massive blind spot that is capable of hiding a car! So cyclists please, do what the cyclist who filmed this did, stay at the back where we can see you and if it is turning left, let it! We have to keep over to the right so we have enough room to negotiate the corner without mounting the pavements. If you get on the inside of a large lorry turning left the gap between it and the pavement will decrease rapidly and if you are in that danger zone then you could end up dead. Remember, lorries and cyclists are like petrol and fire. You do not let them get too close to each other.

      Yes, however without actually being there when the light went red it's impossible to know if the lorry encroached after or it was "stranded" there during a light sequence change where it couldn't proceed. Personally I'd like ASL such as this to be treated like yellow box junctions - don't enter it unless you can get out.

    What is the correct thing to do here if you are making your way to the bike box (assuming there's no lorry) and the lights change to green and you're going straight ahead? This is scary as a cyclist. Some cars are indicating left. I always pull into the side before the junction and wait for a gap as I don't trust cars will check before turning. Do we wait at the side? Is this the correct thing to do? It says cars are supposed to wait till we're out the way in the Highway code but I don't think people realise this. I'm not an entitled cyclist by the way just genuinely want to know the correct action. It's confusing.

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally at that point my approach would be to yield to anyone turning that is ahead of me, at this point you should be able to tell from their actions if they have actually seen you. Normally this would involve them actually stopping and can see them checking mirrors etc. which is a positive sign :) Can then either wave them through to turn and then go straight on or proceed to go straight on but remember to give them a thank you thumbs up or wave :)

    If the lorry didn't ignore the advance stop line, the cyclists would have been able to get around the front of the lorry to a safer position. How are cyclists supposed to get around traffic to the cycle safe zone - designed to allow cyclists to pull away segregated from traffic, without going up the left hand side when cycle lanes are on the left?

    • @SkrzypczykBass
      @SkrzypczykBass  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is where a little common sense comes into play. As we don't see the lights change when the lorry is stopping it's unfair on the lorry driver to suggest they have ignored the first stop line, the light sequence here is incredibly short at times so it is quite possible they changed at a point where he wouldn't have been able to stop before the first line. Secondly getting into the ASL isn't mandatory, if you look at the blindspots on a HGV they pretty much fit in with a cycle lane+ASL box so why take a risk putting yourself somewhere the driver won't see you? I'd also add the lanes here are by no means "segregated" - that would imply a physical separation between the road space used by each mode of transport and unfortunately, despite TFL's best efforts, a bit of blue and white paint doesn't cut it.

    It's somewhat now a responsibility of the truck companies to take some measure in order to ensure that cyclists are made aware of a vehicle that is turning, by the use of an audible device. So the truck companies are doing something, however, it's just an unfair way of shifting the responsibility onto the truck companies instead of the government agencies and highways departments taking any burden themselves.
    If the truck companies can share the responsibility then why can the cyclists not take responsibility. Basic road awareness courses, such as CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). What use is an audible device to a cyclist who is deaf.
