With a 1984 F150 300, T18 granny 4 speed and 3.08 axle ratio I once towed a two axle trailer with a 1986 E250 van on it with a bunch of sheet rock inside. Everything together was 11,000 pounds and it definitely felt like it. Another time I towed a 1983 F350 chassis cab dually that weighed 7,000 pounds. I used a huge home made tow bar that is around 8’ long and between 100 and 150 pounds itself. I don’t remember which 300 powered F150 I used to tow that F350. I owned around a dozen mostly 1981-1986 F150’s. All but one had the 300-6.

I gotta say dude, it's been a dream to build an old truck with a turbo straight six like yours, and you're the only guy on this whole platform actually doing it, and doing it right. On top of it, you're keeping in with the traditional styling/function. I have a question, have you had any lean issues on cylinders 1 and 6 when changing spark plugs? Or a rich looking plug on the closer cylinders to the sniper EFI? I'm looking to do something like that but I have heard and read a lot of mixed things on them.
I actually just changed the plugs a few weeks ago (went to a colder plug), and all 6 looked near perfect and identical to each other. The only issue I found was the heat line being all the way at the base of the grounding strap, hence the reason for going to a colder plug.
Did you ever have it dyno'd? If so, what are numbers? What's mpgs? I want to buy a F-250 with a 300 and turbo it also. May put it a higher gear ratio(3.08) to fix mpg problem.
Nope, I’m hoping to get it dyno’d and professionally tuned early this summer, it’s parked up for the winter now. I’m getting about 10mpg, but I just bought a ZF5 to swap in to hopefully help that number out

Im thinking of getting one of these but just building a naturally aspirated version for towing. Easy enough to get 300+ foot pounds. Good enough to tow 8000lbs all over the Americas including mountains?
It’s your lucky day brother, I’ve got a full detailed 5 speed swap on my channel followed by a towing video with it. Not much changed though, the gearing on the 5 speed is virtually the same as a 4 speed just with an overdriven 5th gear on top. The synchro setup sure makes it nicer to drive though

Question here, would there be any glaring issues with what I have in mind for my project vehicle? I ask cuz I'm inspired to do some out-of-the-box thinking like you and make something awesome. :) I do plan on getting an old f100 and upgrading it with a shortened f350 frame with 4 wheel drive from a 2008 donor ford pickup, the biggest upgrades for me are running an air system for the semi airbags and the crown piece of it all will be the eaton rto-610 (or rto-6610) (10 speed manual transmission), weight wise it'll be no different than running an np203/205 doubler with the stock 4 speed tranny... except it will be only adding an extra 245 pounds (effectively). I would have the air system not only operate the transmission but also the air bag suspension for the front and rear, and to unlock the trailer brakes (as well as operate the trailer brakes in tandem with my project truck's existing brakes) with an air-to-hydraulic system. I do have a Class A license (not going to do hot-shotting but i will keep my license because I worked my arse off for it and I'm proud of it.) so legally speaking I'm in the clear. The airbrakes for the trailer as a security measure thing isn't my original idea because I am crediting Deboss Garage with his Ftreekitty (F350 CAT-powered truck with a converted Allison 1000 transmission with four wheel drive.) when he mentioned that he plans to run air to his trailer so that nobody can steal it. The way I see it, if a moron REALLY wants to steal my own custom gooseneck trailer, they better bring a frickin' air pump and an Airbrake endorsement on their license cuz it won't take 'em long to get pulled over by DOT lol. XD
Rare to see a turbo 300, especially one being used like this. Think it woulda pulled it without the turbo though? My old OBS with the stock 300 can barely pull itself up to the speed limit, much less 12k pounds. Not that I've tried yet...
It had a 4 barrel setup when I got it, but it was a dog. It probably would’ve pulled it but most likely not at the speed limit, I can get up to speed with a load behind me pretty quickly with the turbo setup
These 300 CID inline 6 engines that Ford made, are real work-horse's... Coupled to a manual trans and a 4x4 chasis, this truck is probably going to fetch every-penny that was put into it, and then some when the time for selling it takes place, if that time should ever arise... One question, was that a diesel fuel pump to put fuel into it, or was that a gasoline nozzle , with a green shield instead of a red or black shield?
@@WastedPaycheckGarage , Gotcha... That threw me off for a second, but Your truck sure didn't sound like a diesel... Keep that truck Amigo... Love 'em. My 85 F150 has a 300 in it. I'm not boosting it, I'm not fuel injecting it, but I'm also not V8 swapping it either. Gonna keep it in there.
best engine ever made... I stand by it. I always thought of it as an unbreakable work horse. I just found out they were getting 600 HP of them in the 70's N/A no forced induction. that is 2 HP per SQ. inch. the 454 cant do that... not sure the LS can
Are those stock towing mirrors dang I like them puppies
Very nice 👍👍 thanks for sharing
Need steel crankshaft from the medium duty 300 truck . Yes the 60's and 70'were available with 4.9 300 6 with steel crankshaft
Where did you find a camper special late 70s truck in that good of condition?
That turbo'd 300 sounds good.
OMG that sounds choice!
Hey man I’m curious on where you got the digital gage from
I have a question, have you had any lean issues on cylinders 1 and 6 when changing spark plugs? Or a rich looking plug on the closer cylinders to the sniper EFI? I'm looking to do something like that but I have heard and read a lot of mixed things on them.
I actually just changed the plugs a few weeks ago (went to a colder plug), and all 6 looked near perfect and identical to each other. The only issue I found was the heat line being all the way at the base of the grounding strap, hence the reason for going to a colder plug.
What kinda power is it putting out
No clue! Probably double stock, so 240hp and close to 500ft-lbs? Hard to say
@@WastedPaycheckGarage def be neat to dyno
Did you ever have it dyno'd? If so, what are numbers?
What's mpgs? I want to buy a F-250 with a 300 and turbo it also. May put it a higher gear ratio(3.08) to fix mpg problem.
Nope, I’m hoping to get it dyno’d and professionally tuned early this summer, it’s parked up for the winter now. I’m getting about 10mpg, but I just bought a ZF5 to swap in to hopefully help that number out
Nice rig
This past summer I bought a 73 ford 3/4 ton form the arugula owner my uncle it has 90 thousand orange million it hadn’t run in 25 years it was parked do to a leaking gas tank I replaced the gas tank rebuilt the carburetor new plugs and wieners chock coil engine oil all new filters rubber fuel lines radiator lines that arugula 390 engine runs great the truck hasn’t sen much salt it manly was used to hall a camper
Im thinking of getting one of these but just building a naturally aspirated version for towing. Easy enough to get 300+ foot pounds. Good enough to tow 8000lbs all over the Americas including mountains?
I’m curious what a 5 speed would do for pulling.
It’s your lucky day brother, I’ve got a full detailed 5 speed swap on my channel followed by a towing video with it. Not much changed though, the gearing on the 5 speed is virtually the same as a 4 speed just with an overdriven 5th gear on top. The synchro setup sure makes it nicer to drive though
stock internals?
I just bought an '85 F250 with a 300 and want to follow the turbo route.
Is this 300 a diesel? I saw the gas pump was green, it peeked my curiosity
I have the same question
BP uses green handles for everything
Looked for your install on the Turbo for details and didn't see it? Do you have details you could share on turbo specs, pipe supplier etc? I have a 69 F100 with a 240 that is going to get swapped out for a 300.
The turbo is a VS racing 7875 billet wheel, most of the exhaust piping came from TruBendz.
Check out this video is you haven’t, I go into a little more detail about the truck there, I built it a little over 2 years ago before I started this channel so I don’t have much footage of it
th-cam.com/video/eNYPgm45W4w/w-d-xo.html
What tires you running? are they 32 inch tires? I need to know because im gonna be driving 2500 miles total starting in washington state, to oregon, california, then texas. Picking up two trucks, both are old fords from the mid 70s. One of them is like your truck, 4 speed with an i6 300.
Man i love old trucks, what gears she got in her?
Yep got to get out the pressure washer now and rinse out the salt now.
Did you see the guy who welded up some LS heads and bolted to a 4.9 and a big ole turbskie
Err green gas nozzle? I thought the 4.9L was gas not diesel. Confused.
BP. All nozzles are green
@@WastedPaycheckGarage ah gotcha
I thought the same thing 😂
She pulls nice and easy, even on the grades...good set up..
Just perfect, considering stock parts and all that.
Can,t complain indeed.very respectable.
That is just wicked
in PNW?
What part of Michigan? Looks like northwest Lower Peninsula. Kalskaska maybe?
I’m just about as far southwest as you can go in Michigan, right along the lake
Brother in law lives in Galien, close to you?. He has a 65 F100 with a marine 427 FE in it, 5 speed, and disc brakes. He is fixing to sell it, too many toys. I had an 88 or 89 F150 300 and 4 speed granny gear.
Yep, pretty close to galien!
Question here, would there be any glaring issues with what I have in mind for my project vehicle? I ask cuz I'm inspired to do some out-of-the-box thinking like you and make something awesome. :)
I do plan on getting an old f100 and upgrading it with a shortened f350 frame with 4 wheel drive from a 2008 donor ford pickup, the biggest upgrades for me are running an air system for the semi airbags and the crown piece of it all will be the eaton rto-610 (or rto-6610) (10 speed manual transmission), weight wise it'll be no different than running an np203/205 doubler with the stock 4 speed tranny... except it will be only adding an extra 245 pounds (effectively).
XD
Anybody know what a decent turbo setup will do for tq and hp in these engines?
Good for what they are , diesel standards nope , cool factor yup all of it
I wanna turbo my 94. What tune am I gonna need?
Rare to see a turbo 300, especially one being used like this. Think it woulda pulled it without the turbo though? My old OBS with the stock 300 can barely pull itself up to the speed limit, much less 12k pounds. Not that I've tried yet...
It had a 4 barrel setup when I got it, but it was a dog. It probably would’ve pulled it but most likely not at the speed limit, I can get up to speed with a load behind me pretty quickly with the turbo setup
Love it!
Anyone else notice the green nozzle when he filled her up?
4.9 ain't no diesel.
Some places have green for gas. It's confusing
It runs off of diesel
?
BP uses green handles on everything
12k counting the truck right?
No, the trailer is 4500 empty and the tractor is 7500 with loaded tires and ballasted up.
ITS NOT LEAKING OIL, its sweating power 💪😅
I wonder what a twin charged boss 300/6 would sound like in this truck or my truck when the va starts issuing trucks for mental health lol
Green handled gas pump, BP station
@@WastedPaycheckGarage , Gotcha... That threw me off for a second, but Your truck sure didn't sound like a diesel... Keep that truck Amigo... The current trucks have become very expensive and ridiculously complicated... I have a '77 GMC 3/4 ton p/U daily driver with a 350 gas V8 and a TH-350 trans.... One rebuild on the trans about 350k. miles ago, still works fine... And the original 350 engine that has not been overhauled.... 470k. on that truck, still works fine... Definitely KEEP Your F-250...
@@michaelmartinez1345 yeah. I have to be careful with green fuel handles when I fill up my diesel. I think it's red at BP gas stations.
Gdamn thats a bad ass truck.... 💪👍
Where are you located, Wisconsin?
Michigan
I fuckin love that thing
What are you running for ignition.....distributer, etc? Are you using the sniper to control the timing? Thanks for any details. Sweet rig!!
Running a locked out HEI distributor with MSD 6AL-2 box. Timing is independent of the sniper as of right now. It’s working fine so I’ll probably leave it that way
What brand turbo is that. and is it a 10 blade?
It’s a VS racing 78/75 billet wheel. I believe it’s a 12 blade
Sweet build and it sounds amazing! Would love to slap a turbo on my ‘66 300
Which tranny does your truck have? My 1994 F250HD had the ZF heavy duty 5 speed, 1993 F150 had the Mazda 5 speed, my other dozen plus 80’s 300-6 F150’s had probably every different tranny available. A good around town truck would be a 1992 to 1995 F150 300-6, ZF HD 5 speed and a 3.55 rear axle with a cable locker.
My F150 96 model 4.9 short bed had 2.73-1 differential. I put a Detroit True track in and Yukon 3.31-1 ring n pinion. Tows my 5000lb camper excellent. Put 24000 miles on it from Alabama to Oregon and Washington. Back n forth over 4 months. Mazda M5od Love this set up
289,000 miles and purrs
Amazing!
I’d be a serious buyer if you ever sell it
Over time I have owned 8 different inline 6 cylinders. never had one I didn't like. Ford Chevy or Mopar
