    Okay, I'll admit the title was a bit click baitey. In my defense, I didn't think it would actually work, at least not to this extent. For those curious, at the time of writing there are 90 dislikes on this video. Of course you wouldn't know this if I didn't tell you since TH-cam decided to hide the dislike bar. They claim it was to prevent smaller channels from being harassed, but speaking as a smaller channel if the dislikes and negative comments hurt me so much I could easily just disable both. No, clearly their main reason for getting rid of the dislike bar was to allow big corporations to save face when they fuck up. Spineless cowards.

    JRPGs suck but not because of the turn based mechanic. They suck because after 30 years of JRPGs you're still,basically playing the same game with the same story arc and the same tropes and stereotypical bad guys.

      @j4dedm4llard47 he's not, many RPGs have outstanding turn-based combat, in fact I would say the majority of them have great turn-based combat since there are so many different variations of turn-based combat. Also I feel the opposite way, if people who don't normally like turn-based combat like a turn-based battle system, that is a red flag and usually indicates that the battle system in question is very shallow, simplistic, and lacking in depth in order to appeal to a wider audience. The worst turn-based battle systems often ARE the ones that appeal to people who don't normally like turn-based combat like Pokemon while some of the best ones are ones that only appeal to people who already like turn-based combat like Final Fantasy V, Chrono Cross, and Xenogears. Hot take but turn-based RPGs should be made for people who already like turn-based combat, trying to make a niche genre appeal to wider audiences is exactly what ruins genres and series, because then they get dumbed down, casualised, and streamlined.

    The Mother/Earthbound series is always one that I’ll love. It was a series that easily got better and better with each installment, peaking at 3. They’re games that take their stories seriously while also having fun with them and making them weird as hell along the way with dark endings and undertones. The endings for 2 and 3 are some of my favorite game endings ever. All the characters are so memorable even if it’s just an npc with a one off line. Not to mention the settings, music, enemies are all so unique and wild compared to what you usually expect from jrpgs. For the combat I loooooved how your hp slowly ticks down when getting hit instead of just instantly dropping; allowing you to heal your member before their HP reaches 0 and they’re out of the fight . In the boss fights that mechanic makes you strategize over which party member would hold certain items, and who would heal and who would deal damage each turn; and you have to make these decisions fast enough to not let a party members HP tick down to 0. In a way it pretty organically mixes turn based with real time combat in my opinion. It also made the attacks from enemies that deal massive damage across the whole party never feel unfair. Sorry I’m rambling I don’t talk about these games often haha. I’d highly recommend 2 and 3 and maybe skip out on 1 since it’s easily the most frustrating and barebones. It’s a series where you don’t have to play the earlier games to understand and enjoy the plot. They’re not perfect, they can be a bit grindy and I wish encounters were generally easier to avoid, but I still love them and always will. There’s a reason why there are so many indie “quirky jrpgs with underlying themes of depression, anxiety, death and destruction” like Undertale, OMORI, LISA etc. Mother is what started it all. Would recommend 👍

    I like them but they need more innovation. I really love the mother series because it has fast gameplay, has a rolling health bar mechanic that allows you to heal your teammates before they die, and in mother 3, it has a mechanic that let's you attack but if you press a to the beat you can rack up damage and do 16 hit combos. Speaking as someone who likes jrpgs, you raise some good points. Menu-based combat by itself can be boring - and random encounters frequently end up feeling like a waste of time.
    Personally, my favorite jrpg combat engine was in XenoSaga 2. Between boosts and guard breaks, it always has you planning multiple turns ahead, and it's extremely satisfying to max out your boost gauge, then break an enemy's guard and boost in the right party members in the right order to toss them around like a rag doll

      Some jrpgs aren’t even trying with graphics. It’s already 2023 and I’m still seeing graphics like we are still in 2006.
      People always reason with “it’s the art direction they went with, it’s not ugly it’s just its style.”
      art style is different from graphical fidelity of a game. You can still have a good looking graphics with heavily stylized art direction. Some JRPGS are just bad, the way they texture, create polygons in 3D characters, add lights, looks exactly like games they had for the past 16 years. Bayonetta 3 for example.

    A lot of what made RPGs "classics" back in the day was that when it came to plot, they didn't really have a lot of competition. Excuse plots or at best cutscenes between levels were the norm for most games, so if you wanted to really be drawn into a story while playing a video game, your only options were WRPGs and JRPGs. Both genres tended to be mechanically simple because people who liked them mostly cared about the plot.
    It wasn't until gen-6 systems that you started to get non-RPGs that rival RPGs for plot, and as games started to develop even more sophisticated stories RPGs (especially older ones) start to look a little bland.

    Yknow how 95% of horror movies range from terrible to mediocre? I feel like thats the case for jrpgs.
    Every once in awhile youll find an octopath traveler or xenoblade chronicles. But mostly the genre is made up of games that don't have a deep enough turned based system to intrigue the player or like the video said they try to do a sort of turn based/real time combat mix where the menuing is rough and the combat is the least fluid thing you've ever experienced.
    The reason I searched for this video is because my friend got me started playing tales of xillia today and the tutorials were neverending despite all you need to know being...
    1. X to attack
    2. O to use arts
    3. □ to block
    4. Hold ZL to move
    5. ZR uses a special
    Yet the amount of text I read in tutorials probably couldve filled a novella. And after all that? The combat is extremely unimpressive. Yet its his favorite game of all time? I dont get it. Literally the only thing to like is the witty writing.

  • @TheCyclicGamer
    @TheCyclicGamer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    My main issue with JRPGs is that they focus more on telling you a story rather than letting you just simply exist in the world in and of itself, like how WRPGs like Outer Worlds, Fallout, and Skyrim usually do. You're not in those worlds to be spoon-fed a plot, not necessarily, you're simply there to exist in those settings, to adventure out and discover things on your own and piece your own conclusion of how things happened and why.
    JRPGs are the exact opposite. Everything is pre-defined, the characters, the sequence of events, everything. WRPGs allow you to forge your own story on top of the stories that already exist within the games where JRPGs don't, the personalities of the characters, the decisions they make, most of it is already decided for you and what little control you do have is as impactful to the overall plot and story as a fly landing on a wall, so it feels like you're less like playing a game and more like watching a movie that you occasionally interact with, especially with how too frequent cutscenes can be.
    The funny thing is, FF1, one of the pioneers of the genre, wasn't like this. While it did have a main story that you had no control over either, the story was incredibly simple and wasn't really the main focus, your journey in the world was. On top of that, FF1 is the only game in the series where you create and name your own characters, almost like they're an extension of you, and all cutscenes and dialogue only ever happened when you willingly interacted with NPCS.

    Some people are just born liking turn-based combat, and some are not. I don't know what I like about them and random encounters, maybe it comes down to wanting to optimize your decisions or not wanting to bother. Because when you try and look deeper, you can find many ways to optimize your resources, usually HP and MP. Also, I love the idea of putting in "work" for a greater reward, when I stumble into a high level area with really tough enemies, I still can leave fulfilled knowing that in my brief time there I gained a stack of money and xp. And what I adore in so many classic jrpgs, like the final fantasies and dragon quests on the nes is the freedom you have in progression, so many times you have to just go and explore the overworld for a way forward. Slowly piecing together what you have to do and then doing it is something many like myself feel is very satisfying.
    But yeah, they're not for everyone, I can respect those who simply say they don't enjoy jrpgs and state why respectfully, like you, but not those who just start ranting about stupid reasons why they think liking jrpgs is objectively wrong. See some people in this comment section.

    I'd also like to add that traditional for JRPG invisible enemy quirk is stupidly annoying and needed to be dealt with by the end of NES era. It was understandable back in 80s due to hardware constraints, it even looks appropriate to not have visible enemies on the screen when you looking at almost a diagram level of graphics, but for some reason Japanese game developers enjoyed this gimmick so much they continued to implement for three ddecades now. I just don't get it, even in 16-bit FF games it looks weird to walk around empty dungeons while being attacked by hoards of enemies, and in modern titles with high-polygon, hughly textured graphics it looks like a bizzare fever dream.

      16-bit FF games didn't have sprites for enemies on the field, usually. So you're stuck with monsters being only in-combat artwork. Starting with FF7 it was just a force of habit. YOU CAN TURN THEM OFF IN MODERN RELEASES.
      By PS1 era you got games that had enemies always on screen like Grandia, Chrono Trigger & Cross, Tales of Symphonia and later, but Final Fantasy was REALLY late to catch up, what was the first to remove invisible enemies, 12? That's mid PS2 era.

    You might want to try out a few more action-based JRPGs.
    The Ys series is always one of my go-to recommendations. Ys VIII is a good starting point. Its focus is on fast-paced combat more like a hack and slash type of game.
    You might also try Nier: Automata. It's a JRPG with a battle system by Platinum games, which makes it a lot of fun.
    For turn-based JRPGs, it sounds like your big issue is that you can play a lot of the games basically on autopilot. You might want to give a try to something like Octopath Traveler, where every battle requires you to think strategically without the strategic aspects feeling overwhelming. Alternately, you might enjoy something where position plays a role in turn-based combat, sort of like how certain techs in Chrono Trigger depended on character and enemy positioning in terms of how many enemies you'd hit. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel uses a pretty interesting position-based system, where you can also strategically exploit the game's mechanics to do things like delay enemy turns.

    Problem with jrpgs is this. They are stuck in the NES zone too much. Thexy figured a way to present rpgs on that simple console - the famicom/NES. They had to simplify the gameplay to get it done. But theyy have been stuck in this simplified state ever since. Except Fromsoft, a company that totally revamped the console rpgs idea that plaqued japanese developers ever since. Fromsoft took the classic western pen and paper rpg idea and refined them back into modern video game format. It's not as if western developers didn't realise that idea already years ago too. But Fromsoft is a good turning point where japanese developers wake up and start to get things right. Getting rig of outdated ideas and realising how things should be done.

      I don't think all of the credit should go to FromSoft. That is unfair to games like Dragon's Dogma and Final Fantasy. I would even say Xenoblade Chronicles 1 had a hybrid Japanese and Western style. Even now, a bunch of fans can't accept that FFXVI is going more action oriented. It boggles my mind since there are so many other modern turn-based Square Enix JRPGs. I hope developers aren't afraid to lose parts of their audience. I think they are holding back the potential of the genre.

    Anime and jrpgs both come from the same place and are rapidly declining in quality. The problem is people are so pathologically loyal to a franchise they won't criticize any wrong moves made by the company. The corporations in no way reciprocates this sentiment. They know they can make an easy dollar off of blind fan worship and will exploit this until it begins to affect their bottom line. Nostalgia goggles have become more masochistic than ever with fans having full blown stockholm syndrome and actually conditioning themselves to like what ever the machine pumps out. Japan has cutthroat business tactics that make the mafia look like a charity organization. If they can get away with selling bile at full retail price they will. The simple answer to the problem is to find a better way to spend your time. Be it through different games or different forms of entertainment all together. Life is too short. I Agree. random encounters, grinding, story not hooking me from the beginning (first hour or two) or losing its hook, and bland turn based combat (dragon quest)are each deal breakers for me. I Might be willing to deal with the last if the other issues aren't there, like persona 4 on lower difficulty. persona 5 has the most fun turn based combat I experienced. Worth noting that some jrpgs have a twist on the traditional turn based combat, like radiant historia and fire emblem, which might make them fun enough. my problem chrono trigger is the lack of direction that leads me to get stuck and look for a walkthrough or just I only wanna focus on progressing the main story and don't care about interacting with everything just to do that.

  • @thegamerfe8751
    @thegamerfe8751 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The only actual criticism I agree with is how most stories are generic "save the world" ones which drag quite a lot and that's why I love Persona. The series is filled with mystery about what's going on in the world and 99% of questions are answered at the end so the game keeps you interested in the story and you get a "save the world" thing but again it's only at the end so it doesn't feel generic and it perfectly fits with everything that happened before (and even has many plot twists).
    However I feel that you just don't want to put too much time I to these sort of games cause at the beginning you said you didn't finish Persona 3 and 4 (though story wise and music wise for the last few unique fights you're definitely missing out, in that case go watch the animes if you can) cause they were too slow paced when the pace is in reality pretty normal. This just says that you can't be bothered to put 10s of hours into these types of games (cause that's how long they are) but this isn't a criticism, this is totally fine and 100% understandable and logical, I'm just pointing it out.

    I can understand you, jrpgs, especially older ones, are really hard to dive into. Random encounters are really irritating even for a lot of genuine jrpg fans. However I would say that recent titles fixed a lot of problems that older jrpgs had and are easier to jump into. For example, I really enjoyed recent titles on my switch but can’t really jump into snes, ps, ps2 jrpgs because they are hard, repetitive or just simply boring. Like in one of the most known jrpgs on snes called breath of fire you just have your regular sword and no other skills after literally an hour into the game. It’s just bullshit. The only game of snes era that really managed to fight this ideas is chrono trigger. It is really an awesome project, enjoyable even now in 2022.

    • @Solus749
      @Solus749 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that is because older jrpgs they don't expect alot action combat just 1 hour in. They are still setting up character, world lore and basic controlls. Ofc this include basic combat controlls but they don't expand upon it until the training wheels go off. The reason for this is that jrpg combat is alot more tactical under the surface than new people give it credit for. Add to it that jrpgs in general are 40+ hours long. Only real exeption is crono trigger who is 20 ish hours but with newgame+ and 13 endings.
      Long story short, jrpgs have a story they tell and rather than throw you into full combat right away they set things up first. Final fantasy 7 have the first reactor attack but that is part of the cloud story setup and then they dive into midgar lore for a while until the second reactor attack. Instant reactivity works for shorter attention setups but cutjumping from action to action constantly removes the slow detailbuilding part of it. Basicly put to appreachiate the fast parts you must also have slow parts.
      And this is comming from someone who have full ADHD and I can handle jrpgs just fine. I just don't expect them to throw "do this, this is fun" at me constantly and appreachiate the slow parts.

    Interesting point of view :)
    I grew up on western RPG games. The first I really really liked was ... Ishar Series on Amiga. Then it was some kind of a gap (of course i tried eye of beholder and other) and then ... Fallout appeared. Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment etc. It was huge. I played every such game. Elder Scrolls Morrowind etc.
    Now I'm almost 40, some time ago i started collecting retro handhelds (because i never had one). Well, I started with ... Chinese retro console - Anbernig RG351p. The good thing is that it gives an access to: jRPG for PSX, PSP, SNES, NES, GBA, GBC etc. Then I bought, Nintendo DSi XL and 3DS XL - this gives an access to huge games library.
    The problem is that ... there are literally tons of jRPG and to be fair, majority seems a bit generic. I mean, I'm sure there are 5-10 titles that have great story, characters but still i have a feeling that many jRPG as generic ones. In western world it was kind of easier - all of the titles are well known, it's rather easy to distinguish good rpg from bad. jRPGs on the other hand look very similar, with very similar game mechanic. Long time ago jRPG = rpg maker for me, because most of them had pretty same, top down graphic.
    I hope that i can still find some 2-3 great jRPGs :)

    A few years ago, I would have defended JRPG's with my life. I'm still looking forward to a few coming up, but overall, I think JRPGs need to evolve and innovate. They rarely break tradition and when they do, there is usually an uproar from diehard fans like with FFXVI.
    I love the party systems and the less drab, serious tone of JRPGs but the story beats and themes are so played out. There are some games that break that mold like with Yakuza Like a Dragon, but it is normally a young swordsman in a medieval fantasy world or sci-fi setting defeating a world ending event or being.
    I also hate the never-ending exposition and dialogue. It ruins the pace of gameplay. I love story in games but JRPGs, like anime, do more talking than showing. A lot of it is just empty fluff. I also love more linear games but sometimes JRPGs have a habit of giving you an excessive number of tutorials and railroading you for stretches of time. Just let me play! Instead, it bombards you with excessive systems on top of systems and menus to navigate.
    I think I could actually stomach some recent JRPG's if they didn't look straight from the PS2 era still. Like another comment said, some charge full price for something that looks 20 years old with mechanics less polished. It feels like a scam. I at least want JRPGs to be somewhere on par with Tales of Arise or Dragon Quest XI in terms of production value. I'm also excited for DecaPolice but it looks fairly unique with a more unique style. I just can't stand the typical anime style with PS2 graphics.

If you don't like either of those, then classic style JRPGs probably just aren't for you. Especially modern ones which usually don't even try to have interesting stories.

    I do disagree a lot with the video, but alright, is how you feel playing them. In any case, let me recommend a JRPG saga that you may like given the points of the video: Tails of. They are action rpgs with AI control at any time on the combat with the other party members, the music is involving and the stories and characters are really good, even if at first sight they may seem cliche and generic they really develop as characters through the journey.

    I don't think that a player who tries to play, for the first time, an old JRPG like Chrono Trigger or even Persona 3, will enjoy it nowadays. I love JRPGs, but I grew with them, and even I know that some games like these ones that you mentioned would be a disaster for the taste of newer player (or someone who isn't used to it) on the genre. The static combate of JRPG, that managed to survived, like shin megami series, is a really niche mechanic. I don't think that in this day and age you will find any JRPG's with static combat that will please you, you could try Perona 5 or Shin Megami Tensei V, and if they don't work for you, them i belive none will. Now with the JRPGs with a more dinamic battle, like the Tales series, I agree with you that they used to be clunky, but I think the modern ones are getting better, and are close to the hack n' slash, you could try Final Fantasy VII remake, to see for yourself. Now, of course you could still play a Chrono Cross, or Xenoblade, and change your heart and love it, but I think that it would be hard to happen. In my humble opinion the JRPGs are more about the message than the action, and of course that exists lots of JRPGs with tedious combat, the ones with a nicer and more tactical ones are just big pluses.

    I'm surprised this guy only liked Chrono Trigger from SNES and PS1 & 2 and talking how bad JRPG is boring.
    I do agree in some points he made about battle and story. There are lot of gems from 90s and 2000s you only get it if you were in younger generation at the time to fully appreciate its value.
    Of course if you go back and play RPGs and trying to get it why some of games are still considered the best(F.I. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6), you won't get full experience like earlier generations.
    Our eyes and mind just opened up to more dynamic and exhilarating experiance from games now.
    Anyway, don't forget what's not was because of what was before.

I can't stand the cheesy dialog and characters and lifeless story or over complicated plot. And absolutely no difficutly. So defeats the purpose of thinking and using strategy. Games like the Xcom series and Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 make turn based combat work because careful positioning and choice of which character does what, which weapon, equipment, or ability you use, and which enemy you prioritize actually matter, and can make the difference between life and death for characters you've come to love. On top of that, a lot of games of this type allow you to fully customize one or even all of the characters you're fielding, from appearance all the way down to exact builds. It turns a basic "I go, you go" system into an intricate web of options, builds, and synergies which challenge the player to find new and creative solutions to overcome the increasing challenge of the game.
    JRPGs just, as an aggregate, lack that kind of anal-retentive complexity and customizability I've come to love about the RPG genre. I'd even say it's a stretch to call them RPGs when compared to games like Fallout 1, 2, and New Vegas, the Baldur's Gate series, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, Icewind Dale, Daggerfall and Morrowind, and the tabletop granddaddy of them all, Dungeons & Dragons. When I play a JRPG, I just feel constrained. I feel railroaded. I feel like the game is telling me a story rather than placing me in a world and making me a part of the story. My character isn't mine. He's just generic JRPG protagonist #47,918,211. His motivation for answering the call to adventure is "I'm the protagonist, therefore away I go". I hated it in Skyrim, and I hate it here.
    Not every JRPG has every one of these problems, but most of them have enough of these issues to turn me off to the genre. Maybe they're great games, but calling them RPGs is an insult to RPGs. We ought to just call them what they are: narrative-driven turn-based adventure games. There. I fixed the genre.

    • @Drstrange3000
      @Drstrange3000 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These would be called "Tactical RPGs, which I agree offer a lot more depth and engaging combat than just standard turn-base gameplay. I also like when games do something with the standard turn base formula like in Mario and Luigi RPGs and Undertale/Earthbound where you have to have control over your dodges and attacks. I think Final Fantasy 7 Remake is one of the best implementations of combining action and turn based combat.
      I also feel too constrained and railroaded in JRPGs as well. I love story and love linearity, but JRPGs spend too much time stopping the game with either a lengthy tutorial, dialogue and exposition, or repetitive mobs of enemies and menu navigation. Despite having some of these issues, I really loved Yakuza Like a Dragon. It didn't fall into the same tired tropes and when it did, it was very tongue and cheek 4th wall stuff and the main characters imagination.

    As someone who's first RPG addiction was the original Fallout I hate JRPGs by and large. Coming from Fallout a role playing game to me meant you could create a character and decide what kind of person they would be, there has to be some degree of freedom.
    JRPGS are largely linear in most cases with maybe a couple branches in the main story if you are lucky and some optional side quests.
    If I want something linear I'll pick up an action game FPS or the occasional platformer.
