  • On March 6th 2022 at approximately 4:30PM, deputies responded to a report of two men physically fighting at the Dunedin Cove Motel. Upon arrival, they learned that 27-year old Kenneth Lunford, Jr. got in a fight with another man following a drug deal. Lunford then stole the man’s car and fled the scene.
The Eagle was requested and a BOLO was issued for surrounding agencies. After attempted traffic stops by the Clearwater Police Department, Flight Unit deputies spotted Lunford, due to his high rate of speed, southbound on North Fort Harrison Avenue. They watched as he continued to drive in an extremely dangerous manner with no regard for others. After driving through areas of Clearwater, Largo, Belleair Bluffs, and Belleair Beach, Lunford unsuccessfully attempted to carjack another victim at a stoplight in Indian Rocks Beach and continued to flee southbound on Gulf Boulevard. He crashed into two vehicles in front of The Original Crabby Bills before exiting the stolen vehicle and carjacking a vehicle involved in the crash.
He continued to drive recklessly before crashing into another vehicle in Indian Shores, driving through a fence, and driving off a seawall into the mangroves. Lunford waded into the Intracoastal Waterway where he was eventually apprehended by deputies from the Marine & Environmental Lands Unit. Between the PCSO and the Clearwater Police Department, Lunford amassed 31 total charges: Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Property Damage (12), DUI with Property Damage (11), Fleeing and Eluding (3), Carjacking (2), Attempted Carjacking (1), Resisting an Officer with Violence (1) and Robbery by Sudden Snatching (1).
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.

It is ludicrous to suggest we should be quick to kill, just in case someone does something later, which so far has not happened. Where would it end? I think you shouldn't exist because you must hate to not like Santa? lol.
How do you keep anyone away from civilians? I guess if we just shot everyone, then there's no civilians left to save, right? The stupidest thing possible is to impose a death penalty without a trial. Just wait, someone will make an excuse that they think you are just about to do something horrible and they MUST STOP YOU.
The thing to do is back off the pursuit, WAY WAY off, and let the helicopter follow. This kind of thing has been followed for a while now, is why more and more departments are implementing no-pursuit policies except in extreme cases.
It's just STOOOOOPID to suggest deadly force when to get that close, you could just take a tire out or ram, etc. Breaking a law does not automatically make it acceptable to kill someone. Good job however I believe at times the officers asking permission to engage when the danger to the public is so extreme shows how micro-management and political rules impede on law enforcement being able to make skilled decisions in situations. The lack of enforcement ahead of the suspect to block of intersections in the path of the chase increased danger to citizens. Also once law enforcement allowed the suspect to crash and enough time to proceed to car jack another vehicle shows they are giving the criminal to much space and time to continue. Use of deadly force would have used once the man attempted to car jack another person IF crossfire was clear of any people IF given the chance to end this danger to the public. Many pedestrians nearly lost their lives and the child in the stroller. Respect to the law enforcement however learn from this situation how to end this much sooner and safer if possible.

Agree they should have gave the order shoot to kill stop him I don't give a shit how you do it. Blm and the democraps have law enforcement handcuffed unable to do their jobs for fear of being arrested or fired/ sued

This piece of crap's father Lunford Sr. passed away January 12, 2022...RIP...but he and the rest of the family sure raised someone that is a danger to the general public and communities. No regard for innocent people going about their daily lives. I am sure his family will be looking to place blame on anyone else including the police [ie: why did they have to chase my son...he is a loving person and the cops scared him...etc...] and will try and file lawsuits if they can.

I live in California I've seen many many of me please chases and this has to be the worst I've ever seen. You guys need more training on how to chase a pursuit you guys need more training on how to Chase down the the pursuant. So disappointing in every direction. I give this a two out of 10
