Rainbow Six Siege Was Almost The #1 FPS Game...

  • Rainbow Six Siege. A game that was nearly written off in 2016, would just two short years later, become a premier FPS title. Bolstering hundreds of thousands of monthly players and a healthy esports ecosystem. Nowadays, the player counts are a fraction of what they were, and the once-healthy esports scene is barely alive. So what happened to Rainbow Six Siege, and why did it fail to become the #1 FPS game?

    Well researched and brilliantly written!
As someone who joined the Siege team later on in its story (at the tail end of year 5), it's always fascinating to hear the stories of how it got to where it is today.
You hear some of it from within of course, but every source brings with it a new nuance, and the way it's presented here gives me a perspective I don't always get from inside.
I may not know what the future holds for Siege (well, not everything at least), but I do know that there is still a dedicated team that will do everything in its power to see the game eventually reach that #1 spot. I hope I get to see that happen. That would be neat.

@@choharrry Definitely. For me the game started to feel worse in grim sky due to lighting and recoil changes. Then in Phantom sight no more new weapons each season. Thats the exact moment in which Rainbow six was Rainbow six no more. To be fair the last two operators have great designs reminding me of the old good days (RAM brings the tacti-cool looks that the game used to embrace) but the they fucked Up casual in this last season, bringing quick match. I love ubisoft games, but I Will never forgive the company for what they did to my favourite Game ever. Rainbow six pre-grim sky is the best shooter we as gamers ever had

    • @corndoge3992
      @corndoge3992 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

@@Alex_Munoz5yeah I mirror this sentiment, as a casual player who never escaped platinum rank in grim sky, I feel like the recoil changes single handedly brought the game into controversy. Problematic operators (at the time, and shortly thereafter grim sky recoil changes) such as Ash and Jager used to have high recoil guns, but the removing of "the sight wobble" made recoil easier to anticipate and control.
I agree that the sight misalignment issue causing the change needed fixing. However, once they made those recoil changes, the cat was out of the bag. The SMG 11, Bearing 9, and SMG 12 were nerfed into the toilet with recoil changes. The game changed fundamentally, and Ubi saw that the way to balance things was just to nerf whatever item each update crossed a boundary in a spreadsheet. In addition, I mentioned Ash and Jager because their weapons after the recoil changes became zero recoil lasers in Grim Sky.
I will also concede that predictable recoil patterns raise the skill ceiling of a shooter game, because it allows for a learning and training of how the guns operate. However, recoil patterns that can be perfectly anticipated (with tons of practice) contribute to the prevalence of high fire rate headshots being king. People get frustrated getting defeated by the same tactic used by various people, and in their perspective, their opponent is spraying wildly at head level to score an instant kill, rather than being caught by someone who exercised patience to nail a headshot in one go.

    • @Alex_Munoz5
      @Alex_Munoz5 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

@@corndoge3992 I agree with you in everything, but one minor detail. I think the recoil before wasnt "unpredictable", but "bumpi-er" if thats a Word. Might seem like something stupid to puntualize, but its important for me because unpredictable most of the time equals unfair or rng based. Im Happy to see more people realize that the changes mades in grim sky fundamentaly changed the Game forever. I played Siege quite late in its cycle but still enjoyed it. But when I went to get my rank and got placed with Bronze teammates against a full Gold enemy team I quit. You can calculate your rank even before you get it and by that point I qualified for Platinum. Instead of giving me teammates that could hold their own against the enemy team, they gave me the lowest of the lowest skilled players against a full Gold enemy team, lmao. No fun in struggling because they artificially make the game way more hard.

The game became soulless in design. Back at release and good few years after that it had the perfect feeling to it - cold, gritty, tactical, realism-leaning military shooter, something that was missing on the market. Somewhere starting 2020 the game started creating hero-esque characters, it was no longer about top special forces operators that worked as a collective, it was about how we can make an 'unique' mary jane character that represents some party running around in a stadium arena instead of you know, shooting terrorists? And obviously the terrible balance changes proposed over the years, some just not making plain sense or removing a feature that was there since day one.
I think people tend to forget that devs team were switched at some point so it's easy to tell when the game fell off specifically, the people that developed this game from the scratch are long gone, the people currently working on it have joined the team some time ago.

Rainbow six is the greatest example why you shouldn’t listen to competitive players

    • @ryanretrogamer7
      @ryanretrogamer7 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +81

Ubisoft did not listen to competitive players. If you were on twitter following esports players, you would see that all of those nerfs were almost universally hated by pro players and streamers most of the time.
The video talks about the changes to Jäger. Pro league players said to nerf his gadget, not Jägers gun. It took years of many many many many nerfs to his gun before Ubisoft decided to yield to pro league players and actually nerf his gadget. By that time, with a balanced gadget, his gun being hardly usable killed him. And that’s just Jäger. They did the same to Twitch, Ash, Thatcher, Glaz, mute, frost, buck, Valkyrie, caveira, echo, Mira, lesion, ela, zofia, vigil, maestro, maverick, nomad, mozzie, nøkk, and thunderbird. Everyone one of those operators after getting nerfed, pro league players made their voices heard on why they should not be nerfed in the way that they were.
(i left out operators that the community did not want nerfed that pro league did.)

    • @ryanretrogamer7

      @@BaggerFood101 comp players were mixed.
Some said to nerf his gadget, others said that having such a high pick rate was a necessity evil and needed to remain as is.
When the ACOG nerf came, pro league players were mostly found it to be favorable because they made it where only 3 armors had them. The playerbase was divided on if 1 speeds should be the only ones with ACOGs.
When Ubisoft continued to nerf Jäger though, pros complained that Jäger’s gun was what made him strong in casual and lower ranks in ranked, but not pro league and high ranks. They almost all said that nerfing the gadget was needed, not gun nerfs.
I can’t even remember any pros praising Jäger recoil nerfs.
They just kept coming, and coming, and coming, and coming, then grim sky, all recoil for all guns was reworked. Jäger got hit hard! And yet they still nerfed his recoil after that. Eventually, it was such high recoil that they nerfed his magazine capacity and damage.
Then they released Wamai which back then, as a much worse version of Jäger who had to wait most of the round to even put a good amount of utility down. They buffed Wamai a few times along with some more Jäger recoil nerfs.
Eventually they finally listened and made it where the ADSs instead of getting two projectiles each, they only got 1 per 10 seconds. That brought Jäger down. However, despite the gadget being balanced now, all of those gun nerfs stacked up and remained. They were never undone.
And with an extremely low rate a fire, above average damage per second and insane recoil, few wanted to play him anymore. Pro league most of the time switched to Wamai except in strats where they actually needed Jäger.
And that is just Jäger! It happened to a bunch of other operators! Especially Ash, Twitch, and thatcher.

They nerf off pick and win rates I'm pretty sure. Let's say Ace got picked all the time, and won more often than not. That means he's powerful and needs to get the bat. Same thing recently happened to Iana despite her only being picked for nades before they took away cooking.
The problem is they nerf more often than buff which eventually catches up to the game and all the ops are much weaker than they originally were. Plus they seemingly treat the 1.5x as the make or break balancing tool. Thats just an opinion though. I'm not a ubi employee

I was a Siege player for 6 years. Started playing it back in Velvet Shell after watching some videos by TheRussianBadger of playing it. Before then, I played a bit of the PC beta on a shitty gaming PC I had (AMD FX 8320 + Nvidia GTX 460) and rented the game on Redbox for PS4 during launch. I thought it was ok, nothing special. Least until I saw Badger play it. Got into the game since then and was enjoying it. I wasn't all that good at Siege but slowly overtime I kept playing it alongside others. From Velvet Shell until Operation Crimson Heist it was my main FPS title to play (only stopping a bit when Modern Warfare 2019 launched and then I dropped that game soon after). Slowly overtime I got better and honestly I peaked around Y3 or so in terms of player skill.
One of the things I always enjoyed about Siege is that it blended the military themes with the hero shooter elements of games like OW, and I kept trying to get my OW stack to get the game to no success. Even after the toxicity fiasco with Overwatch. Sadly after Crimson Heist I lost interest, the past few seasons were making me angry during the grind of the battlepass (as I wasn't into grinding ranked) on top of my interest for other games gaining at the time such as Forza and going back to MW2019 for a brief period of time. Ultimately I dropped R6 for good after Crimson Heist, but I had kept on being subbed to your main channel because your videos were always good despite me not playing Siege anymore. But the characters will always be a fav of mine, I can't put into words how happy I was when Goyo was announced (as a Mexican myself), and I gained new favs in both personality and gameplay overtime like Ace and Oryx.
Nowadays, I'm struggling to find an FPS title to grind that is up my alley. BF 2042 struggles to run on my Ryzen 5 3600x (yes I've tried the .ini fix), I'm hesitant to buy COD again unless things change for the better (I don't want AI designed cosmetics in the next game, nor another short campaign), Finals isn't my cup of tea and I will forever suck at Counter Strike. But my brain craves a new FPS title, especially an arcade experience that reminds my brain of the golden age of COD without buying those old titles as their PC community sadly died after C&D's from Activision.
Anywho, great video once more G.

Tiny holes in the wall and enemies getting better angles on me was something i wasn't used to playing against or around. I uninstalled it. Then around a year or so later, i remember a few of my friends own the game, and that i did too. So i reinstall, actually try learning the game, and i've been hooked ever since. I left Siege for a few of many reason, I was an OG Player since Alpha and A Diamond Player every season until I left in season Chimera or whatever season was before Master existed.
Coming as a console Player the Insane amount of players using 3rd party hardware Xim, Cronus to use MnK vs Controller in a 0 Aim assist environment. Is insane and discouraging, call it the base form of cheating. DDoS attacks were also a very bad thing back then when it came to ranked games
The operators slowly became one trick ponies and Helped the whole team with the one click of a button.. Finka, Lion... The game slowly turned from tactical Realism shooter into a Sci Fi arcade shooter, in other words the need for strategy was fading away.
The servers were also always an issue, from Hit Reg to Lag - Operations Health showed the worst of it.
Overall after they removed Pro league from console i had my End goal stripped away from me, I was never a PC player. The game took the direction of leaning towards a more casual player base & that wasn't me
I truly miss the game, it was my Main game for years. But nothing is forever.

I can sum up me quitting R6 with a few patches:
-A LONG time ago, they gave Montagne and Blitz some buffs. Notably Blitz could now sprint at an enemy and then melee them, while flashing them. Montagne was a walking super-reinforced wall.
-They made Blitz slower. They brought down his ability to decminate an entire team.
-They made montagne's deploy speed slower, and gave his shield flinch when melee'd so he couldn't sit in a corner.
-They made shields, the thing that we have used for centuries to counter melee attacks, get coutner'd by melees.
-My point: They made something fun, and realized that it was strong, which made it fun: and instead of elevating everything to a fun level, they bring anything that stands out down.
-Screw modern gaming. If you get clapped, get good. I've went against hackers and won. You adapt your strategy against strong things using your strong things to make crazy plays. An ace clip in modern R6 looks so bland to someone who doesn't play R6. It's like watching John Wick trying to play purely defensively if he was in a wheelchair and paraplegic. A lot of modern Esports game suffer from this problem.

Tbh they dropped the ball committing this to a mostly-strict tactical shooter. Having only one life modes is really holding the game back from what it could actually be. They are designing characters that, in order to be fun, need to be frustrating to die against if you're caught off guard. But that's just something inherent to satisfying game design because once the enemy can react, it messes with the psychology of the game a LOT and even the knowledge can become a crutch.
IMO tactical and hero shooter is a horrible combination but what do I know I'm not the one with a dying game.
Dying to an instantly exploding Ash grenade isn't so bad if you can just go back into the fight a moment later. Lion wouldn't be so frustrating to play against if you DIDN'T have to stop because the enemy knowing where you're at would throw the round. Making you have to account for 200 different possible variables and having the whole round hinge on if you prepared for the correct 5 variables is just an inherently frustrating experience.

I think the "hero" aspect of hero shooters sours any game with them after a while. Balance is near impossible since you have to account for dozens of already existing heroes and maps along with future ones in development. The only way you can avoid this is by not making any new heroes at all and focus on what you have, but then people will complain about a content drought or that there's not enough diversity. It's a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario every time.

Obviously this didnt break the game, and the fact i did not know tub was trans until this video, nor anyone caring at all about flores, makes me think people were actually worried about siege making a political statement and that diversity in itself was never the controversy

Great video and analysis. I enjoyed watching this while smoking my shisha)) I began playing Siege in early 2017, needless to say I remember why I liked playing this game from 2017 - (late) 2019: the operators weren't overly exaggerated with their gadgets, the gunplay still heavly relied on the use of these gadgets, and the UI was very simple. I remember the wall papers from each season which portrayed realistic operators. It had a nice atmosphere to it, I totally forgot about this hadn't you showed this in your video. I took a break from Siege for about 4 years, but I played one match in late 2021, and it was a totally different game. I dont remember which operator I saw during this match but I geninuely told myself "wtf." This Siege had a different atmosphere it - the new operatora felt out of place and were too technological. The original theme of R6 (elite police/counter terrorist units) disappeared, so yes, I would say the change of them changed this game (the constant new technological/futuristic operators). Gameplay wise, the eSports community continues to drive the course of this game. I returned to Siege 1 month ago from my 4 year hiatus, and I notice how heavily this game is catered to the eSports players.... One last note: I wish the profiles of the operators were dossiers like before, not some biography written by a developer who has a gender problem. I disagree with one thing you said: this video IS a call-to-action. But the calls (shots) are not up to us.... they are determined the eSports players.

Harry was a narrative tool to show what Rainbow Six is all about, diversity, from all walks of life, united under one common goal, no matter the sacrifices, no matter the differences
At least to me, the duality of Deimos and Harry is a mirror that Ubisoft Montreal is pointing right at us, and maybe they're hoping we'll realize that.

Siege could of been my favorite tactical fps PvP game but, then Ubisoft wanted to push for super heavy futuristic gadget gameplay, awful anti cheat and constant focus on more operators instead of fixing actual problems that been existing since launch. It’s honestly a shame cause gunplay is great and destructive maps is awesome but, everything else is bad.

This is a really good take on the game in its state and how most people view Siege and it’s back story. Very well done. The game was more fun/nostalgic prior to all the controversies

I played it from 2017-2020 it was really fun, but they started to nerf everything and change everything that remotely meant fun. They only cared about pro league after that and it shows

Been playing since operation health and reached plat during white noise so idk if my opinion is valid,
but what the Dev team needs to do is revert every balance change and revert every character to They're released form for a whole year and patch out/in every buff and nerf to each character based on what ever new data presented itself during that year.
For map design the Dev team needs to start giving attackers power position and expand on the deduction. I've been brainstorming but they need to add structural weaknesses that only attackers can open because the defence is way too strong. This would be buff for sledge because he can now open up a brick wall or floor by using the majority of his hammer usage.

That was really well made video. I'm playing Siege since Skull Rain opreation and this is still my fav game, i hate it sometimes, and i love it too. And that's why i don"t want it to die

Siege's greatest pitfall was not being Patriots.
    Edit
Hopefully, somewhere in an alternate universe, the Tom Clancy series kept its Tom Clancy roots. I owned the game informer and it was the last issue I got.

I don't really care if we get siege 2 or another rainbow game that's only single player as long as it has some of the operators pressent either to choose from in a planning phase, or giving us mission briefings. I really like a lot of the characters in siege, as opposed to the original Rainbow games where I only ever really liked Bishop
