What I think happened is when they met Spurs prob had already rejected their deal and no deal on the table but during this time Kawhi made it clear he wants out and thats when Spurs decided to go back on Masai's deal. If he knew, he wouldve told him based on how he tried to keep getting in touch with him to tell him he's traded before he hears it from anywhere else.

It makes sense when you hear him talk about how scared he was to leave Compton when he could've gone anywhere in the country for college basketball. He seems like a guy who gets really attached to his surroundings and people around him. He left his comfort zone and learned how to survive and grow up in Toronto so that's probably why that area means so much to him. Having to move again after making that his new home probably brought upon a lot of anxiety.
