Oct 31, Colombo: The construction of the Neluwa-Lankagama road, which was started to meet a long standing public need, is now in its final stages.
President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who visited Lankagama on August 29, inspected the condition of the road and instructed it to be completed in 90 days without harming the environment.
The Army Corps of Engineers commenced construction of the road on September 2 with the approval of the National Building Research Organization.
A 6.5 km section from Neluwa - Warukandeniya to Lankagama will be developed under the first phase. Construction of 5.5 kilometers of the road has been completed and the remaining one kilometer of it is yet to be concreted.
The number of newly constructed bridges and culverts on the road is 34.
The Road Development Authority has commenced carpeting of the road and 4 km of it has been carpeted.
The Army Corps of Engineers said that the road was expected to be completed within 90 days and that it will be completed within the first week of November.
The construction of Lankagama - Dombagoda road to Deniyaya under the second phase has also now begun.
The total distance of Lankagama - Dombagoda road is 5.4 km. Construction of 1.8 km has now been completed and 14 of the 52 bridges and culverts have been constructed.
Eco-friendly methods are followed in the construction of the road and no rocks will be blasted
After the completion of the first and second phases, a SLTB bus will be run from Neluwa to Deniyaya via Lankagama. The journey time from Neluwa to Deniyaya will be reduced from 4 hours to 45 minutes.
According to the Road Development Authority, the building of the road from Neluwa to Deniyaya running through the Sinharaja forest was started on a request made by the residents in the area.
During his visit, the President also promised to build a concrete bridge to replace the flood-damaged vine bridge in Lankagama village and its construction is in the final stages.
The 120 feet long and 06 feet wide bridge constructed to replace the vine bridge is expected to eliminate the existing barrier to school attendance for children in Wathugala, Lankagama, Nilwella, Kolonthotuwa and Pitadeniya villages.
Sri Lanka Telecom and Mobitel have launched a service project to provide communication facilities to the residents of the area.
