    I'm surprised that you wouldn't even mention CE ratings like A,AA, AAA.
    We live in an era where these pants are actually tested for durability, not just judged by their materials.
    Also, you could have talked about material durability like polyester vs nylon in textile clothing.

    Saying of old bikers who know: "Dress for the slide, not for the ride.". Textile mesh "over pant" over jeans and take the textile off at the destination. Just look for long side leg zippers for easy on/off. I saw a squid last week take a left turn on the street at an intersection "throw out a knee" and "hang off" in shorts.

      If you walked into a coffee shop wearing jandals shorts and a t shirt carrying a motorbike helmet, ppl would definately look. But in gear you'd look quite normal. Well here in NZ its normal. I dunno, first time I went down I gave myself a great case of road rash on my left forearm which I wore for long enough to be able to tell my kids about it, damn near ripped off my right pointer fingernail and ripped open my King Gee trousers over the right rear pocket. That brand is advertised as serious work wear and I took a kind of serious slide and suffered no abrasions to either my legs or buttocks (as Gump would say). Squidzoning in my office shirt led to the forearm scar that still hasn't entirely faded away almost two decades later.

    Since about 2015 I've upgraded to four jackets and four pairs of pants. All for different applications.
    The most important for me and most used is a hybrid leather/mesh textile Jacket/Pants combo from Revit.
    Best protection for hot temp street riding and day trips. Then an Alpinstars vented mesh jacket/pants combo for very hot temp urban riding. Next was a two piece track combo. Finally, Revit riding jeans paired with a vented leather jacket.
    Boots: two pairs of bootlets, a pair of warmer/ waterproof touring style boots and a pair of track boots.

    Yam and Crew - I've been a subscriber for a long time and enjoy your videos, but for the love of God, when you discuss safety gear, please educate your viewers as to the different levels of CE-rated gear. You gave it a passing mention in this video when you were holding the knee armor, but viewers need to be taught the differences between CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 armor. As for single layer v. dual layer riding jeans/pants, that's all well and good, too, but again, with your channel's reach, please teach viewers the important distinctions between A, AA, and AAA.
    I'm sure people will throw shade at me, but I don't care because it must be said and it's true: the European vendors do a far better job at educating consumers with regard to safety ratings and I wish our vendors did, as well.

    It's funny you made this video when you did, because I had my bike on PNO for a couple years. I just started getting it back on the road and first thing I did was all new gear and different gear from my first set, which oddly enough wasn't suitable for my riding style, other than maybe the helmet... Literally bought a bunch of cheap riding gear which in total cost me like $300; shoes, pants, jacket, gloves and helmet... Last month I dropped something like $1,500 on gear; boots, leather pants, 2 pairs of leather gloves, 2 different color helmets, chest/back protector and some under clothes pads for elbows, knees and my hips & tailbone. Glad I spent the money, just waiting for a jacket in my size now! Great video, thanks guys!

      Another option for occasional riding around town is a pair of 501 style jeans in 1.2mm cowhide leather. They do not give the protection of armour, but they give good low speed slide protection and do not rip. They also do not soak up water like denim.

      The problem with the cheap Chinese made gear is they aren't certified and have no been safety tested. They are made to be "mostly" protective. They don't do what the better stuff are designed to. Like on a better jacket when you slide the sleeves won't slide up your arm exposing your wrists. The cheap Chinese ones will slide up on you. It's a lot of little things you won't think about the better brands do as standard to pass protection tests.

    I have never crashed on a bike, but I did get ejected from my 1980 Chevy LUV pick-up truck onto pavement at about 50mph. Suffered some pretty bad road rash but somehow not bad enough to require skin grafts.
    Younger than that, I got my foot stuck under my 4-wheeler's rear tire on pavement. My sneaker popped off instantly and my foot dragged along the pavement under the tire for about 40 feet before I finally managed to reach the hand brake and stop the quad. That did require skin graft. I lost a lot of skin, meat and nerves on that one. 30+ years later, I still have a large cavity in my foot with zero nerves/ feelings.
    Sacraficing protection for looking cool is for shallow twats. Period.

    I've never thought riders look goofy in riding gear. Riding gear tends to catch attention because it's different. But I've always envied people dressed for riding as a nonrider (for now.)

    I love the 4SR gear, I got the club sport jeans you were showing and the hoodie jacket, both fit perfectly and seem to provide a decent amount of protection for what they are. Riding a bit harder I would still never go without "race leather"

  • @theTenthlife
    @theTenthlife 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I exclusively wear textile mesh personally. I'm a sissy about my legs being hot, and while they aren't as protective as possible I'm willing to take the risk. Still impact and abrasion resistant and they feel like riding without pants on. I'm also not a very fast rider so I don't worry too much about extended sliding.

    • @xeridea
      @xeridea 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I wear textile mesh with impact protection over shorts. Heat and humidity in the south are horrible. I had a lowside at about 60, walked away barely a scratch.

    • @trsskater
      @trsskater 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your mesh pants are protective as possible. Yeah they are no reusable leather after a slide. But they will do their job for the 1 slide they are rated for. People act like leather is the only good option when textile now can be as good as leather on the street just it can't be used for more than 1 slide.

    I recently came down in very highly rated dual layer, dynema reinforced jeans at about 10mph into a roll as I watched the bike fly away. Everywhere the jeans touched the asphalt the fabric exploded. Luckily I was rolling so no real sliding occurred, but my jeans went from business casual to hipster central in that short time.

    Leathers, road or track. Back in the 90s everyone wore 1-piece race suits down to the pub, now its jeans and tshirts. I could care less what the current fashion is, the only reason I still have fully functional legs is by wearing leathers with armour so that works for me

    Wish you would of reviewed under Armor pants. I saw some this last time I went to my local cycle gear store, and I'm thinking im gonna go that route instead. The cheapest riding jeans i saw were around $120 and felt super cumbersome. At $120 for a pair of jeans, I thought the under armor would be a better option considering that if you go down, the riding jeans are probably gonna be kinda fucked anyways

      Underarmor is underrated but for good reason. They're cheap and versatile, but my god the discomfort is incredible. I remember sliding once and my entire clothes shredded, leaving me in protective undersuit similar to Gantz and it was somewhat hilarious but embarassing. I like them, but it's not for everyone.

    Fun story, the only accident on a bike *I* had, shattered my upper shin, right where the armor would have ended in a pair of riding pants with knee guards, and no one would have been wearing a full suit for the ride I was on, so basically, FML, right?

    Riding a cruiser I feel pretty safe with a pair of motorcycle jeans. If I somehow get into a slide, I'm not going very far, and It has armor at the knees and hips. I have no interest in leather and the only time I look into a textile alternative is when the temperature drops, and I wish for something warmer.

    They look like normal jeans but they have all the protection I need from knee pads to kevlar woven in to them and some other protective fabrics all around the important parts
    For my jacket I use a dririder jacket
    Same with my gloves
    I use alpinestar boots
    Topped off by a bell helmet
    All up it cost me just on a 1000 Australian dollar
