I know right?!?!?! I guess it was because we had just sat through 2 hours of rising action. Quite a thrilling movie. I was moved, and the first time he was knocked into I like...felt it. Feels weird to say, but I think my mouth literally opened in the theatre. The whole movie is stunning and deserves all the awards. Sad to see neither of these two actors nominated.

It was such a stunning and overwhelming scene, especially after having gone through everything leading up to that moment. The intensity and beauty of that scene was so moving.
I really appreciate how Sam says our new movie rather than my new movie. Really speaks about the kind of director he is.

There were just much better performances in my opinion. There were a lot of snubs, but George MacKay for best actor definitely wasn’t one of them in my opinion
Because the Academy prefers to reward showboating over nuance (although they did nominate Banderas who was very subtle too). He was robbed indeed.
Because Oscars has been a joke for many years now. Also because George MacKay is a young actor of an immense talent with many many spectacular roles in the future, he will get his chance yet

Everyone talks about George’s performance, which no doubt was absolutely phenomenal, but Dean’s performance absolutely shattered my heart in a way no other performance has been able to do. This movie was more tragic than all the tragedies I’ve ever seen, and that couldn’t have been achieved without Dean’s performance. I think the two actors were both absolutely amazing

Both done such a wonderful job at attaching us to the characters, and both deserve the recognition of having a great future in acting

When I came out of the cinema after seeing this i couldn't stop crying - this movie was a true experience, and it made me feel a whole new set of emotions. It was ART.

Pretty clever when he says that editing is the gimmick, not the one-shot continuous take. I do hope that this blended style of cinematography and storytelling becomes the new norm.
Michael Coletti there’s a movie called Victoria (2015) which is actually a true one shot movie.
It’s definitely an amazing style of film making and editing. Would love to see more like this. Russian Ark is another amazing one take movie to check out.
Ummm... I don't think the continuous style works in everything and it shouldn't be a norm. There's something in the traditional montage editing that the immersive one take can't achieve. Especially in action and suspense. If all films would be shot like 1917, it would get boring.

this style of film making has been around for quite while... it shouldnt be forced into the mainstream as that would cheapen the style. chill on all that
Thought Joaquin Phoenix would win the Academy Award for 2019 but after seeing "1917" George McKay rips and tears it apart- All involved were terrific. Great clip, thank you.

Phoenix obviously was better. I saw 1917 last night. It was a beautiful and powerful film. Joker was much more memorable though, and it’s still my favorite film of the year. Both are masterpieces. Joker was more impactful. And you can’t really compare the acting roles.These guys are good actors, but the film doesn’t go deep into the characters.
And Hollywood ripped and teared him apart by robbing him of an Oscar he'd earned.
George McKay was amazing in 1917 but no, Joaquin Pheonix is still much much better.
I must say that I love the idea of them doing 'sequels' of this from each different soldier's point of view! I didn't want this film to end, it was an absolute masterpiece!

its amazing how the film already gave us clues that scho already have daughters - from the picture of two little girls scho took time to look at in one of the beds in the german bunkers, the ragged doll in the floor of the abandoned house, then the interaction he had with the baby girl which showed his fatherhood... finally leading us to the moment where he looked at his own photograph of his 2 daughters. JUST BRILLIANT!
All 5 of them can be very proud of what they achieved making that film. It was phenomenal.
George MacKay's hindsight is truely remarkable. To be able to retrospectively examine and exhaust every minute detail around which the character he plays was constructed is a breath of fresh air. Acting is, in essence, a talent. Meta-acting is breaching the boundary between the role and the idea of the role played. From what I've seen, MacKay constantly engages in meta-acting. In simpler terms, he pays a whole lot of attention to the intricacies of filming, having in mind the inextricable relation between cinematography and the plot. His often engagement in filming details is not only a sign of a promising future in which directing and producing is possible for the young man, but is also a proof of his unequivocal understanding of the importance of the process of building a character, which should definitely come before undertaking and performing the role. Hats off to him. Would love to have a conversation with him one day.
I keep listening the 1917 soundtrack...over and over. I walked out of that film with tears in my eyes. I'm going a second time.
1917: Part Two - Starring the extra who collided with George MacKay during the final run scene and played dead!

@@weasley2o13 they weren´t suppose to collide. But they did. So instead of standing up and run further, he just played dead to not stop the continueity of this scene. It was said in the making of, that this whole colliding was a mistake.
@@warrior100girl Yeah I get the whole wanting to not stop the continuity, but it's stupid when you look at it because he plays dead after running into someone, NOT getting shot or blown up lol. The telegram must have read "I regret to inform you that your son was killed in action after colliding with a fellow soldier."
An extra collides with the main actor in a scene of the movie, and it makes it all the more memorable by accident.
Roger Deakins looks like the proud grandpa of the family and Sam Mendes is the proud father
and george and dean is like the sons who just came from a adventurous vacation and Krysty is like that cousin who just visited for dinner lol

This movie is by far my favorite flim. I can't stop watching it. I lost count how many times I've played 1917.
The scene where Schofield is running from gunshots and the only light we get is in intervals from flares is a cinematic masterpiece. The whole movie was a cinematic masterpiece.
George Mackay has been the biggest Oscar snub for the entire decade!
Yes! When George talks about them never talking about how they felt... I felt that when Blake died and Schofield had to get on the back of the mog, and the lads were spinning yarns, and there was that one guy who was the storytell/joker, just like Blake.
Could feel his grief, pain, yet the need to "soldier on", literally, because of the mission.

great round table. sam mendes comes across almost like a teacher, with the way he prompts george and dean to discuss the technical sides of the film and smiles approvingly. looking forward to great things from these two. the script krysty wrote is so eloquent i almost wish i had a bound book version. it really reads like a novel.

George MacKay is such a thoughtful and considered guy. His observations are just far deeper than what most actors say about their role. Dean-Charles Chapman reallyyyy tries to lean into how difficult and challenging the shoot was, but George doesn't seem all that interested in indulging in that kind of typical actor-speak.
MacKay has spoken about how difficult and challenging it was in LOTS of other interviews.

I’m constantly impressed by their focused commitment to their craft. Actors like Timothée Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Viggo Mortensen, etc.

I also love how George shared how he resonated with his character because of the previous job he had just done.
When he explains that Schofield had a mindset that was focused on the here and now, not being able to be in two places at once.
Made me think about the end when the mission had been accomplished and he was finally able to sit down under a tree and look at his family pictures.

I like how they have a conversation about and see the film from the different view points and learning about the different roles. They also seem to really get along with each other.
George MacKay is lovely. Have watched a couple of his old films; will wait for 1917 on Prime or hopefully Netflix.

Fantastic film. We just watched it and came home yearning to find out more. Thanks for providing the context in this roundtable. Last year I retraced my father’s WWII trek from Canada to England for training and then crossing to Normandy, through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. It is so important to share these stories lest we forget. Also as the mother of a DP, the one shot concept blew me away.

my favorite little part of the film was when schofeild and the german soldier made eye contact and he ran to cover his mouth so he wouldn’t be seen by the other soldier. that gave me chills and reminded me a little of mad mx fury road (one of my fave movies ever)

What a movie. The eye for detail which transported the audience back to 1917. It is like they put in infinite amount of time and effort to develop a movie which make us want to watch it many times. Not a complicated plot, but yet they dealt the structural and technical complication with ingenuity and unwavering teamwork.

Mackay has some really good insights. I saw Mendes reacting as if to say that was a good point. Like George said that he could start a scene and he want from pretending to existing. That is what the really soon actors do, is to exist as their character. Like Bobby Duval “become” “Gus.” I think of Spencer Tracy as “Manuel”

Thank you for this amazing movie. I did not want to see this movie because of my war experience, but my brother made me go to the theater to see 1917. I was so happy to be proven wrong. This was such a different experience from any other movie that I have ever been to. so many breathtaking moments, literally breathtaking. The cinematography, the casting, the lights, and the settings; everything was perfect.
I'd be digging into that free food throughout.
