    As to charging options : solar is great for mobile ops, but if the tent is going to be a HQ, you have the flowing stream available to build a mini-hydroelectric plant, that could charge a conventional battery bank, perhaps at the house or shop? That has the ability to be sized up, as well.... just spit-ballin' the possibilities you have there....

    • @vovin8132
      @vovin8132 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      First problem is that engineering a hydroelectric system is very complex, especially compared to just buying some solar panels for a few hundred bucks. Second problem is that there are almost certainly regulatory barriers to modifying any stream, especially fish-bearing streams, and this is basically begging the government to coming in and ruin you.

    In Scappoose (OR), they wanted 70k to bring power from the public street to where our house will be (about 500ft). We said no thanks and went 100% solar. We spent more than the 70k (including a dedicated battery/inverter building), but we will not have to pay for electricity for the rest of our lives, not have to deal with blackout/brownouts due to lack of new power plants (or downed power lines in the winter), and won't be having anyone tell us what we can/cannot use it for and when we can/cannot use it and won't have to deal with future rate increases, which are getting crazier and crazier. We have 14kw of solar on 3 dual axis mounts, 120kwh of battery storage and 240v/275a worth of inverters for our small 3 acre farm. It's pretty damn cool we have this capability and was fun to build.

    • @-Kreger-
      @-Kreger- 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      That’s awesome, what is the lifetime you expect on the solar and batteries?

    • @steveanimatrix3887
      @steveanimatrix3887 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      @@-Kreger- In about 20 years, the batteries will hold ~80% of original capacity and same with the solar cells. That rating is based on if you completely charge and discharge them once a day (one "cycle"). They're rated for about 8,000 cycles. If you keep the batteries between 20%-80% full, they will last even longer, which is why it's good to have a large battery bank so you don't need to run it down to 0. So in 20+ years, we might need to add a few more batteries and panels to make up for the ~20% degradation of the system. You don't have to start from scratch with new batteries/panels. The market is flooded with 2nd hand panels (usually after they replace a large array) that still have plenty of life in them for 1/2 the cost. We went with new Boviet 450w bifacial panels (collect light from the front and rear of the panel, not just front). We made it through our first Oregon winter with 18" of snow, a week of 12F temps and didn't need to start a generator to recharge the batteries. We just ran the clothes dryer less often in winter and let the woodstove and an oscillating fan dry them. We heat with woodstove and have a well along with a couple thousand gallons of stored rain water, which we mostly use for crops. Instead of running electricity all over the 3 acres, we just use smaller ecoflow units with solar panels to drive pumps out in the gardens.

    I live off grid in the UK on a canal boat. We now run 400W solar to 6x130ah AGM. I have an additional 395W panel that will be added this week. Not because we need it in summer (we do not) we run 240ac fan and a couple of USB ones for cooling but we will have fully charged batteries in winter too. I chose AGM rather than one of these or Li-ion simply due to cost.
    Next replacement is 5 years away (IF I look after them) so by then it might have come down.
    I replaced 3 18mth old AGM's (Always replace all your batteries together or a bad one can cripple your bank) so gave two to our daughter for her and her partners camper. I kept one for myself as a mobile 12v supply. I have just bought a van. Am doing a REALLY basic fit out (that comes out) so it is still usable as a van and the battery will go in there.
    I appreciate Cody his knowledge and sharing it with us. But, we are seeing the results of a LIFETIME of preparing, working and striving to get to the point and place where he is and I begrudge him NONE of it! (OK, I confess...I am a teensy bit Jealous, Just a teensy...! 😋)
    Remember, you prep according to YOUR pocket and YOUR situation. I do not have a "bug out bag" but I do have a "Get me home bag". Nothing crazy (or illegal - I WISH we had a second amendment here!) but, on the basis that we are so small the places to "bug out" TOO are limited and I am too dammed old to basha in the woods by choice! 😁Also, if it comes to it I can WALK home in 3 days from most places and week from Lands End or John O' Groats!
    As it is, within limits, I can move the boat or failing that use the van. But, otherwise we would rock up in one of a couple of places I think we could find like minded people to team up with and BUG IN! Pretty much what I did for the Pandemic. I moved from one place where they were NOT like minded to where they were (ish) then once I knew how it was going to go popped off on my own.

    I work extensively in the IT field, but I must express my concerns about the pervasive presence of modern technology, including battery power. Using a high-quality RF (radio frequency) and EM (electromagnetic) meter, you can detect the potentially harmful fields emitted by these devices. When out camping, you may notice significant electromagnetic fields even from battery-powered equipment. These fields can be detrimental to your health, and simply grounding yourself won't mitigate the impact on your cells. It is highly advisable to keep batteries at least 100 feet away from your sleeping area to minimize exposure.
    For anyone who is interested… Building Biology Guidelines - The Building Biology Institute provides guidelines specifically for living spaces, including sleeping areas. They recommend:
    • Magnetic fields: less than 0.2 µT (2 milligauss)
    • Electric fields: less than 10 V/m
    • RF radiation: less than 0.1 microwatts per square meter (µW/m²)

    Straight up commercial or genuine opinion on Ecoflow, for most it doesn’t matter. Technology like this is actually really, really important and useful in case of an emergency, catastrophic event, global conflict or similar situations when you might be put off grid.
    Look at what is happening in Ukraine, how many people are using it right now, from soldiers on the frontlines, field hospitals to private businesses and civilians far in the western Ukraine are using exact same system and technology as wranglerstar is showing and talking about in his video. Those things were in a big deficit when invasion happened, and are still in use, demand on them is not going down as attacks on power grid and energy infrastructure are still happening almost daily.
    To have access to such technology is very fortunate and important in case of unfortunate events, and people definitely should be informed on it. Great and useful information here.

    The problem is not charging up stuff... run a washing machine / dryer or a cabinet saw (not a weak job site one) and you will see the power vanishing... so it is ok and it gives a lot of flexibility but it is still very expensive and very limited when one needs to run heavy powered machinery where a strong gas gen will have these systems licked...

      a modern washing machine will use 1.3kWh roughly, so you can do 3 loads before it runs out, take off the 6 hours of ~250W sun input and you've got another load right there. A tumble dryer is gonna fry it for sure, but that other stuff is no worries. I think it's mad to think it would replace home power, but it sure would supplement it nicely, especially with solar. With 1 or 2 of these and a normal sized solar array (~4kW) on your roof, you could easily go off grid in the summer, even with AC running

      If your running off grid use the washer that's fine, but hang your clothes out in the sun to dry(free solar powered dryer) and keep batteries charged and have a good track saw or guide for your straight cuts that need a table saw and they can be done with batteries.

    8:58 can you link that iPad case/ keyboard?
    I picked up an Ecoflow Delta pro 2, the old model you’re showing, last year and have been using it in my 1997 Lance truck camper with about 800w of solar on the roof, from which I yield approx 550w as wired.
    I left the “ house battery” and separate solar panel intact for all the original 12v electrical. Plug and Play was the solution for me. To be able to accurately monitor your battery, power usage, power input is everything.
